Each basin has distinct geologic, hydrologic, and land-use characteristics. Bear Creek basin (15.03 square miles) is undisturbed, is underlain almost entirely by consolidated coal-bearing rocks of Pennsylvanian age (Pottsville Formation), and is drained by an intermittent stream. Turkey Creek basin (6.08 square miles) contains a surface coal mine and is underlain by both the Pottsville Formation and unconsolidated clay, sand, and gravel deposits of Cretaceous age (Coker Formation). Aquifers in the Coker Formation sustain flow through extended rainless periods. \r\n\r\nPreliminary daily and storm calibrations were developed for each basin. Initial parameter and variable values were determined according to techniques recommended in the user's manual for the modeling system and through field reconnaissance. Parameters with meaningful sensitivity were identified and adjusted to match hydrograph shapes and to compute realistic water year budgets. When the developed calibrations were applied to data exclusive of the calibration period as a verification exercise, results were comparable to those for the calibration period. \r\n\r\nThe model calibrations included preliminary parameter values for the various categories of geology and land use in each basin. The parameter values for areas underlain by the Pottsville Formation in the Bear Creek basin were transferred directly to similar areas in the Turkey Creek basin, and these parameter values were held constant throughout the model calibration. Parameter values for all geologic and land-use categories addressed in the two calibrations can probably be used in ungaged basins where similar conditions exist. Annual precipitation on Long Island averages 45 inches per year, but less than 23 inches , or 50%, recharges the ground-water system. (Recharge is precipitation that percolates to the ground-water system naturally; it does not include water from stormwater basins or injection wells.) The rate of recharge varies locally and ranges from 29% to 57% of precipitation, depending on land use, season, and amount of storm sewering in the area. Recharge was calculated by subtracting evapotranspiration and direct runoff values from known precipitation values. Evapotranspiration was calculated by the Thornwaite and Mather method, and direct runoff rates to streams were calculated from streamflow records and size of known storm-sewer service areas. This report includes maps that depict precipitation, evapotranspiration, and rates of natural recharge in Nassau and Suffolk Counties for use in future hydrologic studies on Long Island. To meet this need for information, streamflow, specific conductance, pH, and concentrations of total alkalinity, sulfate, dissolved solids, suspended solids, total iron, and total manganese at 37 stations were analyzed to determine the spatial and seasonal variations in water quality and to develop equations for predicting water quality. The season of lowest median streamflow was related to the size of the drainage area. Median streamflow was least during fall at 15 of 16 stations having drainage areas greater than 1,000 square miles but was least during summer at 17 of 21 stations having drainage areas less than 1,000 square miles. In general, the season of lowest median specific conductance occurred during the season of highest streamflow except at stations on the Wabash River. Median specific conductance was least during summer at 9 of 9 stations on the Wabash River, but was least during winter or spring (the seasons of highest streamflow) at 27 of the remaining 28 stations. Linear, inverse, semilog, log-log, and hyperbolic regression models were used to investigate the functional relations between water-quality characteristics and streamflow. Of 186 relations investigated, 143 were statistically significant. Specific conductance and concentrations of total alkalinity and sulfate were negatively related to streamflow at all stations except for a positive relation between total alkalinity concentration and streamflow at Patoka River near Princeton. Concentrations of total alkalinity and sulfate were positively related to specific conductance at all stations except for a negative relation at Patoka River near Princeton and for a positive and negative relation at Patoka River at Jasper. Most of these relations are good, have small confidence intervals, and will give reliable predictions of the water-quality variables listed above. The poorest relations are typically at stations in the Patoka River watershed. Suspended-solids concentration was positively related to streamflow at all but two stations on the Patoka River. These relations are poor, have large confidence intervals, and will give less reliable predictions of suspended-solids concentration. Predictive equations for the regional relations between dissolved-solids concentration and specific conductance and between sulfate concentration and specific conductance, and the seasonal patterns of water quality, are probably valid for the coal-mining regions of Illinois and western Kentucky.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, The data, collected from April 1983 to July 1966, consist mainly of streamflow and nutrient concentrations at the river sites and nutrient concentrations, alkalinity, Secchi-disk transparency, phytoplankton counts, chlorophyll concentrations, and profiles of specific conductance, temperature, pU, and dissolved oxygen at the reservoir sites. The Black Mesa monitoring program is designed to monitor long-term effects on the groundwater resources of the mesa as a result of withdrawals from the aquifer by the strip-mining operation of Peabody Coal Company. Withdrawals from the N aquifer by the mine increased from 95 acre-ft in 1968 to more than 4,480 acre-ft in 1986. Water levels in the confined area of the aquifer declined as much as 90 ft from 1965 to 1987 in some municipal and observation wells within about a 15-mi radius of the mine well field. Part of the drawdown in municipal wells is due to local pumpage. Water levels have not declined in wells tapping the unconfined area of the aquifer. Chemical analyses indicate no significant changes in the quality of water from wells that tap the N aquifer or from springs that discharge from several stratigraphic units, including the N aquifer, since pumping began at the mine. Water samples were taken from November 1983 through February 1986 from the abandoned mines, from points of mine-water discharge, and from surface-water locations upstream and downstream from mine discharge area. The pH, temperature, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, and specific conductance were measured in the field. Laboratory analyses routinely included the major ions plus aluminum, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, and zinc. Non-routine analyses of dissolved gases and tritium are presented. Stable carbon-isotope ratios for 11 mine-water samples and three carbonate-rock samples are reported. Pelagic bacterial heterotrophy and biomass","docAbstract":"<p><span>Bacterial activities and abundance were measured seasonally in the water column of meromictic Big Soda Lake which is divided into three chemically distinct zones: aerobic mixolimnion, anaerobic mixolimnion, and anaerobic monimolimnion. Bacterial abundance ranged between 5 and 52 x 10</span><span>6</span><span>&nbsp;cells ml</span><span>&minus;1</span><span>, with highest biomass at the interfaces between these zones: 2&ndash;4 mg C liter</span><span>&minus;1</span><span>&nbsp;in the photosynthetic bacterial layer (oxycline) and 0.8&ndash;2.0 mg C liter</span><span>&minus;1</span><span>&nbsp;in the chemocline. Bacterial cell size and morphology also varied with depth: small coccoid cells were dominant in the aerobic mixolimnion, whereas the monimolimnion had a more diverse population that included cocci, rods, and large filaments. Heterotrophic activity was measured by [methyl-</span><span>3</span><span>H]thymidine incorporation and [</span><span>14</span><span>C]glutamate uptake. Highest uptake rates were at or just below the photosynthetic bacterial layer and were attributable to small (&lt;1&nbsp;</span><i>&micro;</i><span>m) heterotrophs rather than the larger photosynthetic bacteria. These high rates of heterotrophic uptake were apparently linked with fermentation; rates of other mineralization processes (e.g. sulfate reduction, methanogenesis, denitrification) in the anoxic mixolimnion were insignificant. Heterotrophic activity in the highly reduced monimolimnion was generally much lower than elsewhere in the water column. Frequently, the information desired of a gridded surface is directly related to the topologic peaks and pits of the surface. A method for isolating these peaks and pits has been developed, and two examples of its application are presented. </p><p>The perimeter of a pit feature is the highest-valued closed contour surrounding a minimum level. The method devised for finding all such contours is designed to operate on large raster surfaces. If the data are first inversely mapped, this algorithm will find surface peaks rather than pits. </p><p>In one example the depressions, or pits, expressed in Digital Elevation Model data, are hydrologically significant potholes. Measurement of their storage capacity is the objective. Andrews and P. Rivera, has been identified in Chilean coastal waters. This taxon shows obvious affinities to the genera<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Rhaphoneis</i><span>&nbsp;</span>and<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Delphineis</i>, but cannot be classified in either, as they are currently construed.<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Adoneis pacifica</i><span>&nbsp;</span>resembles<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Rhaphoneis</i><span>&nbsp;</span>in outline and to some degree in the pseudocelli, whereas it resembles<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Delphineis</i><span>&nbsp;</span>in the structure of the vela and the positioning of the apical rimoportulae. However, distinctive characters of this new monotypic genus are: (1) the usual positioning of a single rimoportula near the centre of each lateral margin of the valve, and (2) the occurrence of well organized apical pore fields (pseudocelli), in which the pores are much smaller than elsewhere on the valve.
