An integral part of the Survey 's mission is to conduct investigations of the Nation 's land, mineral, and water resources, and to publish and disseminate the information needed to understand, to plan the use of, and to manage these resources. The activities fall into eight broad categories: collection of hydrologic data; water resources investigations and assessments; basic and problem-oriented hydrologic and water related research; acquisition of information useful in predicting and delineating water related natural hazards; coordination of the activities of all Federal agencies in the acquisition of water data, and operation of water information centers; dissemination of data and the results of investigations; provision of scientific and technical assistance in hydrologic studies; and the administration of the State Water Resources Research Institute Program and the National Water Resources Research Grant Program. Basic hydrologic and water-quality principles are discussed in the formulation of a rational approach to developing a statewide monitoring program. A review of ground-water monitoring efforts in Nevada through 1977 indicates that few requirements for an effective statewide program are being met. A suggested program has been developed that consists of five major elements: (1) A Background-Quality Network to assess the existing water quality in Nevada aquifers, (2) a Contamination Source Inventory of known or potential threats to ground-water quality, (3) Surveillance Networks to monitor ground-water quality in selected hydrographic areas, (4) Intensive Surveys of individual instances of known or potential ground-water contamination, and (5) Ground-Water Data File to manage data generated by the other monitoring elements. Two indices have been developed to help assign rational priorities for monitoring ground water in the 255 hydrographic areas of Nevada: (1) A Hydrographic-Area Priority Index for surveillance monitoring, and (2) A Development-Potential Index for background monitoring of areas with little or no current development. Requirements for efficient management of data from ground-water monitoring are discussed and the three major systems containing Nevada ground-water data are reviewed. More than 11,000 chemical analyses of ground water have been acquired from existing systems and incorporated into a prototype data base.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Plant species were identified and dry weight determined for selected sites. Information on competition between Hydrilla verticillata and other species was measured. Water-quality characteristics measured include temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, and transparency as indicated by Secchi depth. A map was made of the distribution of submersed aquatic vegetation based on transect samples and a complete shoreline survey. The NWIS will replace and integrate the existing data systems of the National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System, National Water Data Exchange, National Water-Use Information Program, and Water Resources Scientific Information Center. The NWIS has been designed as an interactive, distributed data system. The software system has been designed in a modular manner which integrates existing software functions and allows multiple use of software modules. The data base has been designed as a relational data model that allows integrated storage of the existing water data, water-use data, and water-data indexing information by using a common relational data base management system. The NWIS will be operated on microcomputers located in each of the Water Resources Division's District offices and many of its State, subdistrict, and field offices. The microcomputers will be linked together through a national telecommunication network maintained by the U. S. Geological Survey. Water samples were collected from 56 wells on the site from 1958 through 1985. Of these wells, 50 are screened in stratified drift aquifers and 6 are in bedrock. Samples were collected and analyzed by a total of four agencies: one State, one Federal, and two private. Of the 1,129 samples, 51 were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey. The data on inorganic constituents exhibit much variability. Specific conductance ranges from 40 to 2,150 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees C, pH ranges from 2.9 units to 10 units, and dissolved solids ranges from 51 to 1,210 milligrams per liter. Trace elements that display wide variations in concentration ranges are iron (<2 to 540,000 micrograms/L), manganese (<1 to 55,000 micrograms/L), and zinc (<3 to 1,900 micrograms/L). The organic compounds with the widest variations in concentration are: 1 ,2-transdichloroethylene (<1 to 542 micrograms/L), tetrachloroethylene (<1 to 386 micrograms/L), 1,1 ,1-trichloroethane (<1 to 1,780 micrograms/L), and trichloroethylene (<1 to 25,000 micrograms/L).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8658","usgsCitation":"Sargent, B., Green, J.W., Harte, P., and Vowinkel, E., 1986, Ground-water-quality data for Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, 1958-85: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 86-58, Report: iv, 66 p.; 1 Plate: 21.15 × 13.39 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8658.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 66 p.; 1 Plate: 21.15 × 13.39 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407644,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_16922.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":40130,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0058/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":40131,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0058/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144742,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0058/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","otherGeospatial":"Picatinny Arsenal","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -74.542,\n 40.917\n ],\n [\n -74.592,\n 40.917\n ],\n [\n -74.592,\n 40.956\n ],\n [\n -74.542,\n 40.956\n ],\n [\n -74.542,\n 40.917\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a91e4b07f02db656db6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sargent, B. The measurements were made by district Soil Conservation Service personnel during 1985. The purpose of this report is to provide these data to other State and Federal agencies as well as to private landowners. The shallowest pre-pumping water levels occurred in Clay, Independence, and Mississippi County where most water levels were within 20 feet of land surface. Counties where water levels of 100 feet below land surface or greater were measured included: Arkansas, Lonoke, Poinsett, and Prairie. Water-level measurements made during the post-pumping (recovery) season averaged 3.65 feet less than those made during the pre-pumping season. A comparison of pre-pumping water-level measurements made in 1984 to those made in 1985 shows an average rise of 1.0 foot within the area (Edds and Spencer, 1985). This is the first in a series of biennial progress reports on Survey activities in the state. Activities such as gathering, interpreting and publishing hydrologic data and scientific information in support of state and local water resources planning, management, and regulatory programs are presented. The water resources programs described are funded through cooperative agreements with state and local agencies and through special agreements with other federal agencies. Cooperative programs are reviewed annually to insure that state, local and national priorities are being met. Groundwater withdrawals are estimated to have produced water level declines of 150 ft and more for large areas of the northeast and central Coastal Plain. Future demands for water quality and quantity are discussed.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr86226","usgsCitation":"Turner, J.F., and Deckard, R., 1986, This report was prepared to summarize well records and water levels for the network and to show the location and density of the wells. Data for 299 wells are tabulated in this report, generally within the interval 1947-85. The well records include altitude of land surface, date drilled, well depth, use of site, use of water, casing type, casing size, casing depth, top and bottom of perforations, principal aquifer, year water-level measurements began and measurement frequency, year chemical analysis began, type of analysis, analyzing agency, and type of logs available. The water-level data include date of measurement and depth to water below land surface. Well location and density are shown on a map at a scale of 1:1,000,000. The hierarchy of terms that is used for water- yielding rocks from largest to smallest is aquifer system, aquifer, and zone. If aquifers are named, the names should be derived from lithologic terms, rock-stratigraphic units, or geographic names. The following items are not recommended as sources of aquifer names: time-stratigraphic names, relative position, alphanumeric designations, depositional environment, depth of occurrence, acronyms, and hydrologic conditions. Confining units should not be named unless doing so clearly promotes understanding of a particular aquifer system. Sources of names for confining units are similar to those for aquifer names, i.e. lithologic terms, rock-stratigraphic units or geographic names. Examples of comparison charts and tables that are used to define the geohydrologic framework are included. Aquifers are defined in 11 hypothetical examples that characterize geohydrologic settings throughout the country. During August 1985, hydrologic data were collected at a total of 15 stream sites in Benton, Lafayette, Marshall, and Union Counties. Main channel widths ranged from approximately 30 feet to 115 feet. Stream depths during low-flow periods were shallow, generally less than 1.0 foot at most sites. Discharges ranged from 0.04 to 74.8 cubic feet per second. The specific conductance of stream water ranged from 28 to 78 microsiemens and dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 24 to 59 milligrams per liter. Turbidity values were 20 units or less. Chromium and copper concentrations in bottom material samples ranged from below detection limits (1 microgram per gram) to 5 microgram per gram and mercury concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 0.08 microgram per gram. The main objective of this cruise was to study the distribution and composition of ferromanganese oxide crusts. Preliminary results of managanese crust composition are reported by Schwab et al. (1985) and detailed studies are in preparation (Schwab et al., 1986).

A total of seven seafloor edifices were studied using 12 khz, 3.5 khz and air gun seismic reflection, chain dredge and box corer. Bathymetry and ship track lines are presented by Schwab and Bailey (1985). Of the seven edifices surveyed two support atolls (Majuro and Taongi) and one is a tiny island (Jemo). Dredge locations and water depths are given in Table 1 and dredge locations are shown in Figure 1. Due to equipment failures depths of dredge hauls were limited to shallow depth for all except the first two sites occupied. Recovery consisted mostly of young, poorly-consolidated limestone of fore-reef slope deposit and minor volcanogenic breccia and loose talus. The breccia and pieces of talus are thickly encrusted with ferromanganese oxide, whereas the young limestone is only coated by a thin layer. Four of the seven sites surveyed yielded volcanic rock. The volcanic rock, volumetrically a minor part of each dredge haul, consists mostly of lapilli and cobble-size clasts in a calcareous matrix or as loose talus. Most clasts show evidence of reworking, being sub- to well rounded, sometimes with a thin ferromanganese crust of their own.

This paper reports preliminary findings on the petrology and geochemistry of volcanic rock recovered.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr86273","usgsCitation":"Davis, A.S., Schwab, W.C., and Haggerty, J.A., 1986, Geochemistry and petrology of basaltic rocks from the Marshall Islands: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 86-273, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr86273.","productDescription":"24 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":41647,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0273/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"424.13 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":147254,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0273/report-thumb.jpg"}],"geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              166,\n              4\n            ],\n            [\n              166,\n              16\n            ],\n            [\n              173,\n              16\n            ],\n            [\n              173,\n              4\n            ],\n            [\n              166,\n              4\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6ab719","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Davis, Alice S.","contributorId":25904,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Davis","given":"Alice","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167495,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schwab, William C. 0000-0001-9274-5154 bschwab@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9274-5154","contributorId":417,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schwab","given":"William","email":"bschwab@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":167497,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Haggerty, Janet A.","contributorId":203314,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Haggerty","given":"Janet","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":13326,"text":"The University of Tulsa","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":167496,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

In 1976, as part of a national program, the U.S. Geological Survey began a study of the geohydrology of the waste burial site to provide a basis for estimating the potential for radionuclide migration in the unsaturated zone beneath the waste burial trenches. Data collected include meteorological information for calibration of a long-term water budget analysis, soil moisture profiles, soil water potentials, and hydraulic properties of representative unsaturated sediment samples to a depth of about 10 m. The waste burial facility is in the northern Amargosa Desert about 170 km northwest of Las Vegas, NV. The region is arid; mean annual precipitation at Lathrop Wells, 30 km south of the site, is only 7.4 cm. The mean daily maximum temperature at Lathrop Wells in July, the hottest month, is 37 C. The site is underlain by poorly stratified deposits of gravelly or silty sand and sandy gravel, and thick beds of clayey sediments. The total thickness of valley fill deposits beneath the site is about 175 m; the unsaturated zone is about 85 m thick. Volumetric soil moisture to depths of 4 m ranges from 4% to 10%, but commonly is in the range from 6% to 8%. Soil water potential, measured to depths of 3 to 10 m, ranged from -10 to -70 bars. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity computed from laboratory analyses of representative samples ranges from 10 to the -13th power to 10 to the -4th power cm/day. Evaporation studies over a 2-yr period were used to calibrate a numerical procedure for analyzing long-term precipitation data and estimating annual water budgets during the 15-yr period 1962-76. This analysis (1) demonstrated that a potential exists for deep percolation (> 2 m), despite high annual evaporation demands, and (2) provided predictions of the time of yr and the antecedent conditions which enhance the probability of deep percolation. Soil moisture profiles obtained monthly over an 18-mo period demonstrate that deep percolation does occur. Soil moisture conditions antecedent to an observed deep-percolation event, and the time of yr when the percolation occurred, support the interpretations based on long-term meteorological records. The Upper Floridan aquifer consists predominantly of light-gray, poorly consolidated, fossiliferous limestone. In the Port Royal Sound area, the Upper Floridan is overlain by olive-gray, medium to course sand and silty sand. Falling-head permeability tests on these overlying clastic sediments indicate permeabilities of 1,100 to 4.3 x 10 to the 7th power centimeters/sec. Other geologic and hydrologic data, including geophysical logs, sieve analyses, and detailed core descriptions were obtained, along with continuous water level records of the wells, tidal records, and barometric pressure records. Water collected from the Upper Floridan aquifer beneath Port Royal Sound and the ocean ranged in concentration of chloride from 54 to 12,000 mg/l. Measured pH ranged from 6.8 to 8.4, and alkalinity ranged from 122 to 368 mg/l as CaC03. Because the aquifer occurs at depths of more than 5 ,500 feet below land surface, and is overlain by about 1,000 feet of low permeability Paleozoic carbonates and shales. Consequently vertical recharge to the aquifer is probably very small per unit area. Data from two sampling sites indicate that the basal sandstone aquifer has low porosity and permeability. The concentrations of dissolved solids in water from the basal sandstone aquifer range from less than 10,000 mg/L to more than 200,000 mg/L. It is believed that some of the values above 50 ,000 mg/L are due to contaminants from nearby disposal wells. This aquifer is not being used as a source of drinking water because of its great depth, the presence of shallower sources, suspected low yields, and possible concentrations of more than 10,000 mg/L dissolved solids. Materials in the landfill include household and industrial waste materials, and various hazardous wastes. In 1983 the landfill was designated by the U.S. EPA as a ' Superfund ' site. The purposes of this investigation were to gather, describe, and interpret all the existing data concerning the hydrology and groundwater quality of the area surrounding the landfill, and to identify any additional data needed to describe the hydrology of the area. The quantity of water flow through the landfill as a result of precipitation on the landfill and in the drainage basin above the landfill probably ranges from 21,000 to 85,000 gal/day. This water movement may be creating a leachate and transporting some of the wastes out of the landfill. The plume would encompass an area where groundwater provides most of the water used for municipal, industrial, irrigation, and domestic purposes. Water quality analyses of water from numerous wells in the area which are open to the Spokane aquifer are available, but well 25/45-16K1 is the only well where groundwater contamination was consistently apparent. This well is only 500 ft from the landfill. Contamination of water in this well was indicated by high concentrations of dissolved mineral constituents and several organic compounds, including trans-dichloroethene (115 to 392 micrograms/L). Available data are insufficient to completely interpret the groundwater flow system near this well and the source of the contamination cannot be determined conclusively. While the existing data are adequate to provide background information, more data are needed to: (1) determine the source of contamination in well 25/45-16K1; (2) determine groundwater flow in the Spokane aquifer near well 25/45-16K1; and (3) determine the extent of contamination in the Spokane aquifer. The degree of the influence of the landfill on the Spokane aquifer cannot be determined with existing data. The Black Mesa monitoring program is designed to monitor long-term effects on the groundwater resources of the mesa as part of withdrawals from the aquifer by the strip-mining operation of Peabody Coal Co. Withdrawals from the N aquifer by the mine increased from 95 acre-feet in 1968 to more than 4,000 acre-feet in 1984. In 1985, withdrawals from the mine wells were temporarily reduced to about 2,500 acre-feet. Water levels in the confined area of the aquifer declined as much as 87 feet from 1965 to 1985 in some municipal and observation wells within about a 15-mile radius of the mine well field. In 1986, measurements indicated some recovery in water levels in most of these wells because of an approximate 90-percent reduction in pumpage from Peabody Coal Co. wells during the last half of 1985. Part of the drawdown in municipal wells is due to local pumpage. Water levels have not declined in wells tapping the unconfined area of the aquifer. Chemical analyses indicate no significant changes in the quality of water from wells that tap the N aquifer or from springs that discharge from several stratigraphic units, including the N aquifer, since pumping began at the mine.
