An essential element of this investigation is the design and construction of a monitor well network in the lower saline water-bearing zone which occurs at about 2,000 ft below land surface. During 1985, a well near Ponte Vedra in northeast St. Johns County was completed into the lower saline water-bearing zone at a depth of 1,980 to 2,035 ft below land surface. This well and other wells drilled under this or other programs will be used to monitor water levels and water chemistry of the lower saline zone. Chloride concentrations in water above the lower saline zone ranged from 14 to 270 mg/L and specific conductance ranged from 450 to 1,440 micromhos/cm c. In the lower zone, chloride concentrations were as much as 16,210 mg/L and specific conductance as much as 46,000 micromhos per centimeter. Aquifer head and artesian flow from the well generally increased with depth. Water temperatures also increased from 23 C in the upper part of the aquifer to more than 28 C in the lower saline zone. The Upper Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water level measurements were made on approximately 1,000 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown mostly by 5-foot contour intervals. In the Fernandina Beach area of Nassau County, a 30-ft. interval is used to show a deep cone of depression. The potentiometric surface ranged from 125 feet above sea level in Polk County to 75 feet below sea level in Nassau County. Water levels in most key wells ranged from 1 to 9 feet below the May average in response to the lack of recharge from rainfall and an attendant increase in pumpage. Many levels in the district were equal to or lower than the below average levels of May 1985. Declines of about a foot from May 1985 levels were common in the eastern half of the district. However, the largest declines from May 1985 levels, as much as 7 to 9 feet, were mostly in well fields along the coastline. Levels in many wells approached, and in a few wells exceeded, record lows. Runoff to the lake, mainly runoff from melting snow and glacier ice, filled the lake to an elevation of 83 feet above sea level by October 8, when the ice dam failed. The lake level rose at an average rate of 0.6 ft/day, and average daily inflow to the lake was calculated to be 16,500 cu ft/sec. After failure of the ice dam, the water level fell to the former high tide level of Russell Fiord within 24 hours. Average discharge through the breach in the ice dam during a 4-hr period of maximum water level decline is estimated to have been 3.8 million cu ft/sec. The formation and breakout of the lake is expected to be repeated as the Hubbard Glacier continues to advance, though the timing of the phenomenon cannot be predicted with certainty. A component of the Water Resources Division of the US Geological Survey, the Center maintains a searchable computerized bibliographic data base, and publishers a monthly journal of abstracts. Through its services, the Center is able to provide reliable scientific and technical information about the most recent water resources developments, as well as long-term trends and changes. WRSIC was established in 1966 by the Secretary of the Interior to further the objectives of the Water Resources Research Act of 1964--legislation that encouraged research in water resources and the prevention of needless duplication of research efforts. It was determined the WRSIC should be the national center for information on water resources, covering research reports, scientific journals, and other water resources literature of the world. WRSIC would evaluate all water resources literature, catalog selected articles, and make the information available in publications or by computer access. In this way WRSIC would increase the availability and awareness of water related scientific and technical information. The geology of the area is well understood, and this geochronologic and isotopic study confirms that the Afif terrane was a continental microplate in the late Proterozoic. The study also provides a time frame for the crustal evolution of this part of the Shield. U-Pb zircon age data from a pelitic garnet-sillimanite gneiss of the Kabid formation shows that this part of the continental basement in the Afif terrane may be as old as 1830 Ma. Isotope data indicate that lead from the Kabid gneiss resided in the upper continental crust for a long period before 1830 Ma, and require that Archean rocks exist at depth beneath the Afif terrane.
\n
Lead isotope data reveal a change in the nature of the underlying crust, from continental basement in the northeast, to less radiogenic, marginal arc rocks in the southwest. This change is coincident with both aeromagnetic data, and a fades change within a pre-collision marginal basin. Miogeosynclinal continental shelf fades of the Siham group lie unconcormably over the Kabid formation, and are in the area of continental lead signatures. Eugeosynclinal deep water sediments and volcanics, in association with ultramafic rocks, occur in the area of marginal arc signatures.
\n
U-Pb zircon age determinations show that this \"Andean\" continental margin developed before about 720 Ma, and emplacement of calc-alkaline plutonic rocks continued until about 690 Ma. During the period 690-640 Ma, the continental Afif microplate collided with the Asir terrane as part of the Nabitah orogeny. At approximately 640 Ma ago, the Najd strike-slip orogen commenced with a dextral phase that controlled the emplacement of granitic plutons as well as the development of a series of large pull-apart grabens. Some of these grabens were floored by new oceanic crust and were filled with volcano-sedimentary rocks of the Bani Ghayy group. The Decree authorizes diversions of water from the Delaware River basin and requires compensating releases from certain reservoirs of the City of New York to be made under the supervision and direction of the River Master. Reports to the Court, not less frequently than annually, were stipulated. During the 1985 report year, December 1, 1984, to November 30, 1985, precipitation and runoff varied from below average to above average in the Delaware River basin. For the year as a whole, precipitation was near average. Runoff was below average. Operations were under a status of drought warning or drought from January 23, 1984, through the end of the report year. Below-normal precipitation the first half of the year resulted in decreased storage in the reservoirs to record low levels by March 1, 1985. Storage remained at record low levels from March through September. Above-normal precipitation in September and November served to break the drought and increase storage into the normal zone of the operating curves for the reservoirs. Diversions from the Delaware River basin by New York City did not exceed those authorized by the terms of the Amended Decree or those invoked by the several emergency conservation measures throughout the year. There were no diversions from the Delaware River basin by New Jersey during the year. Releases were made as directed by the River Master at rates designed to meet the Montague flow objective on 82 days between June 14 and September 28. Releases were made at conservation rates or at rates designed to relieve thermal stress in the streams downstream from the reservoirs at other times. These programs are described for public water supply; supplies for domestic, irrigation, agricultural, commercial, industrial, and mining uses; and supplies for powerplants. Frequency of collection, trigger levels, storage methods, and legislative framework are described. A regional water use data base was designed to store withdrawal, diversion, and consumptive use data on a drainage basin basis. The data base will be used to decide the advisability of proposed water diversion and consumptive use projects as part of a water management strategy. Data base formats, requirements, and methods of data transmittal from each area are described. Methods for acquiring missing data are suggested. Uranium series dating of the calcitic veins permits calculation of rates of apparent water table decline; rates of 0.02 to 0.08 m/1000 yr are indicated for Ash meadows and 0.2 to 0.6 m/1000 yr for Furnace Creek Wash. The rates for Furnace Creek Wash closely match a published estimate of vertical crustal offset for this area, suggesting that tectonism is a major cause for the displacement observed. In general, displacements of the paleo-water table probably reflect a combination of: (a) tectonic uplift of vein calcite and tufa, unaccompanied by a change in water table altitude; (b) decline in water table altitude in response to tectonic depression of areas adjacent to dated veins and associated tufa; (c) decline in water table altitude in response to increasing aridity caused by major uplift of the Sierra Nevada and Transverse Ranges during the Quaternary; and (d) decline in water altitude in response to erosion triggered by increasing aridity and/or tectonism. A synthesis of geohydrologic, neotectonic, and paleoclimatologic information with the vein-calcite data permits the inference that the water table in the south-central Great Basin progressively lowered throughout the Quaternary. This inference is pertinent to an evaluation of the utility of thick (200-600 m) unsaturated zones of the region for isolating solidified radioactive wastes from the hydrosphere for hundreds of millenia. Wastes buried a few tens to perhaps 100 m above the modern water table--that is above possible water level rises due to future pluvial climates--are unlikely to be inundated by a rising water table in the foreseeable geologic future. One of the objectives of the Northeastern Glacial RASA is to provide information on the occurrence and quality of ground water in glacial deposits in ten States: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. To help meet the objectives of the RASA program, an automated bibliographic data base was developed. The data base contains references to ground-water resources of glacial-aquifer systems in the ten States listed above. This bibliography contains more than 700 ground-water related references that date from 1839 through 1984. The bibliography lists books, journal articles, conference proceedings, government and other technical reports, theses, and maps. Unpublished manuscripts, publications in press, newspaper articles, and book reviews are omitted from the bibliography.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir972","usgsCitation":"Wiltshire, D.A., Lyford, F.P., and Cohen, A., 1986, Bibliography on ground water in glacial-aquifer systems in the Northeastern United States: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 972, iii, 26 p. :map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir972.","productDescription":"iii, 26 p. :map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124823,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1986/0972/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30238,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1986/0972/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ce4b07f02db6260b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wiltshire, Denise A.","contributorId":78717,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiltshire","given":"Denise","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146497,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lyford, Forest P.","contributorId":43334,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lyford","given":"Forest","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146496,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cohen, A.J.","contributorId":95042,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cohen","given":"A.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146498,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
