Leachate, indicated by the conservative ion thiocyanate, has been observed 1/2 mi downgradient from the retort. The contaminated aquifer is part of the Green River Formation and consists of thin, permeable layers of tuff and sandstone interbedded with oil shale. Most solute migration has occurred in an 8-ft sandstone at the top of the aquifer. Groundwater flow in the study area is complexly 3-D and is characterized by large vertical variations in hydraulic head. The solute transport model was used to predict the concentration of thiocyanate at a point where groundwater discharges to the land surface. Leachates with peak concentrations of thiocyanate--45 mg/L or approximately one-half the initial concentration of retort water--were estimated to reach the discharge area during January 1985. Advantages as well as the problems of site specific studies are described. Data such as the distribution of thin permeable beds or fractures may introduce an unmanageable degree of complexity to basin-wide studies but can be incorporated readily in site specific models. Solute migration in the study area primarily occurs in thin permeable beds rather than in oil shale strata. Because of this behavior, leachate traveled far greater distances than might otherwise have been expected. The detail possible in site specific models permits more accurate prediction of solute transport than is possible with basin-wide models. A major problem in site specific studies is identifying model boundaries that permit the accurate estimation of aquifer properties. If the quantity of water flowing through a study area cannot be determined prior to modeling, the hydraulic conductivity and groundwater velocity will be estimated poorly. These programs are described for public water supply; supplies for domestic, irrigation, agricultural, commercial, industrial, and mining uses; and supplies for powerplants. Frequency of collection, trigger levels, storage methods, and legislative framework are described. A regional water use data base was designed to store withdrawal, diversion, and consumptive use data on a drainage basin basis. The data base will be used to decide the advisability of proposed water diversion and consumptive use projects as part of a water management strategy. Data base formats, requirements, and methods of data transmittal from each area are described. Methods for acquiring missing data are suggested. The data base will be housed by the Great Lakes Commission, Ann Arbor, Michigan. At the request of the Environmental Improvement Division of the New Mexico Health and Environment Department, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a study to determine groundwater levels and flow direction. Water levels were measured in 44 wells in a 64 sq mi area along the Rio Grande and adjacent areas during a period of near maximum municipal pumpage. Based on the altitude of screened interval, wells were grouped into shallow (screened internal above an altitude of 4,800 ft) or deep (screened internal below an altitude of 4,800 ft) zones. Groundwater in the shallow zone generally moves from north to south parallel to flow in the Rio Grande. Groundwater in the deep zone generally moves from the northwest to the east and southeast. A poorly developed cone of depression within the deep zone was present in the northeast. Water levels in wells were as much as 18 feet higher in the shallow zone than in the deep zone in the vicinity of the San Jose well field, indicating a downward gradient. Uranium series dating of the calcitic veins permits calculation of rates of apparent water table decline; rates of 0.02 to 0.08 m/1000 yr are indicated for Ash meadows and 0.2 to 0.6 m/1000 yr for Furnace Creek Wash. The rates for Furnace Creek Wash closely match a published estimate of vertical crustal offset for this area, suggesting that tectonism is a major cause for the displacement observed. In general, displacements of the paleo-water table probably reflect a combination of: (a) tectonic uplift of vein calcite and tufa, unaccompanied by a change in water table altitude; (b) decline in water table altitude in response to tectonic depression of areas adjacent to dated veins and associated tufa; (c) decline in water table altitude in response to increasing aridity caused by major uplift of the Sierra Nevada and Transverse Ranges during the Quaternary; and (d) decline in water altitude in response to erosion triggered by increasing aridity and/or tectonism. A synthesis of geohydrologic, neotectonic, and paleoclimatologic information with the vein-calcite data permits the inference that the water table in the south-central Great Basin progressively lowered throughout the Quaternary. This inference is pertinent to an evaluation of the utility of thick (200-600 m) unsaturated zones of the region for isolating solidified radioactive wastes from the hydrosphere for hundreds of millenia. Wastes buried a few tens to perhaps 100 m above the modern water table--that is above possible water level rises due to future pluvial climates--are unlikely to be inundated by a rising water table in the foreseeable geologic future. A basic requirement for such analysis is information about the volumes and distributions of snow and ice on other volcanoes.\r\n\r\nA radar unit contained in a backpack was used to make point measurements of ice thickness on major glaciers of Mount Rainier, Wash.; Mount Hood, Oreg.; the Three Sisters, Oreg.; and Mount Shasta, Calif. The measurements were corrected for slope and were used to develop subglacial contour maps from which glacier volumes were measured.\r\n\r\nThese values were used to develop estimation methods for finding volumes of unmeasured glaciers. These methods require a knowledge of glacier slope, altitude, and area and require an estimation of basal shear stress, each estimate derived by using topographic maps updated by aerial photographs. The estimation methods were found to be accurate within ?20 percent on measured glaciers and to be within ?25 percent when applied to unmeasured glaciers on the Cascade volcanoes. These measurements are made on a continuous, monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. Water level measurements have been made in observation wells since 1937 as part of a cooperative program among the Kansas Geological Survey , the Kansas State Board of Agriculture, the city of Wichita, and the U.S. Geological Survey. The objectives of the observation-well cooperative program are: (1) to provide long-term records of water level fluctuations in representative wells, (2) to facilitate the determination of possible water level trends that may indicate future availability of groundwater supplies, (3) to aid in the determination of possible changes in the base flow of streams, and (4) to provide information for use in water-resources research. This report lists for each well in the network the location, the first year of recorded water level measurement, the frequency and number of measurements, the land-surface altitude, hexagon-grid identifiers for wells in the High Plains aquifer, and the principal geologic unit(s) in which the well is completed. Regression analysis was used to develop equations relating basin characteristics and low-flow characteristics at 82 gaging stations. Significant basin characteristics in the equations are contributing drainage area and flow-duration ratio, which is the 20-percent flow duration divided by the 90-percent flow duration. Flow-duration ratio has been regionalized for Indiana on a plate in this report. Ratios for use in the equations are obtained from this plate. Drainage areas are determined from maps or are obtained from reports.</p><p>The predictive capability of the method was determined by tests of the equations and of the flow-duration ratios on the plate. The accuracy of the equations alone was tested by estimating the low-flow characteristics at 82 gaging stations where flow-duration ratio is already known. In this case, the standard errors of estimate for 7-day, 2-year and 7-day, 10-year low flows are 19 and 28 percent. When flow-duration ratios for the 82 gaging stations are obtained from the map, the standard errors are 46 and 61 percent. However, when stations with drainage areas less than 10 square miles are excluded from the test, the standard errors reduce to 38 and 49 percent. Standard errors increase when stations with small basins are included, probably because some of the flow-duration ratios obtained for these small basins are incorrect. Local geology and its effect on the ratio are not adequately reflected on the plate, which shows the regional variation in flow-duration ratio. In all the tests, no bias is apparent areally, with increasing drainage area or with increasing ratio.</p><p>Guidelines and limitations should be considered when using the method. The method can he applied only at sites in the northern and the central physiographic zones of the State. Low-flow characteristics cannot be estimated for regulated streams unless the amount of regulation is known so that the estimated low-flow characteristic can be adjusted. The method is most accurate for sites with drainage areas ranging from 10 to 1,000 square miles and for predictions of 7-day, 10-year low flows ranging from 0.5 to 340 cubic feet per Groundwater data include water level elevations from three mass measurements of wells and water quality information from 68 water quality sampling sites. Surface water data include average annual stream flows and average October through December streamflows at U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations, canal diversions, and seepage from canals and reservoirs. Climatic data include monthly precipitation records for eight weather stations and evaporation data from four reservoirs. Land use data were compiled for agricultural land uses, by county, from 1940 through 1981. Water use site data include water levels at each of 18 sites, soil information for those sites with complete precipitation and pumpage records, and precipitation and groundwater pumpage information for each site. Each data set includes sediment-concentration, streamflow, and precipitation data collected at 5- or 15-minute intervals. One reason for collecting the data was to test the sediment component of a watershed model. However, adequate testing requires reliable calibration data collected at several points during the rise and fall of hydrographs of several storms. Therefore, the quantity and quality of the data sets needed to be described to determine which sets could be used to test a model adequately. The data sets are described in a table that presents information about watershed characteristics, period of record, and amount of useful sediment data. A pilot study was made at four bridge sites in Colorado to develop and test guidelines for collecting scour data onsite during high flows. These guidelines potentially could be used to conduct bridge-scour studies or to establish a nationwide bridge-scour data collection program in conjunction with normal high-flow measurements. The methods tested are intended to be compatible with equipment and procedures commonly used in the U.S. Geological Survey streamflow-gaging program. Thirteen scour-prediction equations were evaluated using data collected during this study. Two alternative approaches for future, proposed scour studies are indicated. The type of approach selected would depend on the objectives of the scour study and the flow conditions in the study area. Eighteen governmental agencies were queried and a literature search was conducted to identify the source and availability of information on precipitation, major storms, streamflow, water quality and sediment, major floods, water-surface profiles, bridges and other structures, stream geometry, aerial photography, flood damages, Illinois River access facilities, Federal lands, and data ratings. The measurements were made by district Soil Conservation Service personnel during 1985. The purpose of this report is to provide these data to other State and Federal agencies as well as to private landowners. The shallowest pre-pumping water levels occurred in Clay, Independence, and Mississippi County where most water levels were within 20 feet of land surface. Counties where water levels of 100 feet below land surface or greater were measured included: Arkansas, Lonoke, Poinsett, and Prairie. Water-level measurements made during the post-pumping (recovery) season averaged 3.65 feet less than those made during the pre-pumping season. A comparison of pre-pumping water-level measurements made in 1984 to those made in 1985 shows an average rise of 1.0 foot within the area (Edds and Spencer, 1985). Most of the 30 irrigation wells in the valley are capable of producing more than 200 gallons per minute. Approximately 2,700 acre-feet of groundwater for irrigation were pumped from the shallow aquifer during 1980 and 4,200 acre-feet during 1981. The shallow aquifer , the subject of this study, consists of the North Park Formation and a lower sandstone unit of late Tertiary (Miocene) age and deposits of Quaternary age along the North Platte River. During 1980, water levels were measured in about 140 wells, 41 of which had been measured prior to 1969. The 1980 water levels were within 5 feet of the pre-1969 water levels. During 1980-81, 21 of the wells were used as observation wells. A water-level contour map of the study area was prepared by the Kriging statistical procedure water surface altitudes for 235 groundwater and stream locations. The map indicates that the direction of groundwater flow is from the borders of the study area toward the North Platte River and north-westerly (downstream) parallel to the river.
