The former distribution of late Quaternary glacial lakes and of glaciers as mapped from field work and photo interpretation is provided as background for interpretation of the radiocarbon dates and are the basic data needed for construction of the late Quaternary chronology. The glacial boundaries, formed and expressed by moraines, ice-contact margins, marginal channels, deltas, and other features, are obscured by a drape of glaciolacustrine deposits in a series of glacial lakes. The highest lake, represented by bottom sediments as high as 914 m to 975 m above sea level, extends from Fog Lakes lowland on Susitna River upstream into the northwestern part of the Copper River Basin (the part now draining to Susitna River) where it apparently was held in by an ice border. It was apparently dammed by ice from the Mt. McKinley area, by Talkeetna G1acier, and may have had a temporary drainage threshold at the headwaters of Chunilna Creek. No shorelines have been noted within the map area, although Nichols and Yehle (1961) reported shorelines within the 914-975 m range in the Denali area to the north of that mapped. Recent work by geologic consultants for the Susitna Hydroelectric Project has confirmed the early inferences (Karlstrom, 1964) about the existence of a lake in the Susitna canyon, based originally on drilling by the Bureau of Reclamation about 35 years ago. According to dating of deposits at Tyone Bluff (map locations 0, P), Thorson and others (1981) concluded that a late Wisconsin advance of the glaciers between 11,535 and 21,730 years ago was followed by a brief interval of lacustrine sedimentation, and was preceded by a long period of lake deposition broken by a lowering of the lake between 32,000 and about 25,000 years ago. An alternate interpretation of the late Wisconsin till at Tyone Bluff is that it is a glaciolacustrine diamicton of the 914-975 m lake into which the ice advanced to the Hatchet Lake and to the Old Man moraines. The level of this regional lake in the Susitna drainage and on Heartland Ridge then dropped from over 914 m to about 777 m, to uncover the Tyone Spillway. An intermediate lake level in the Susitna-Tyone-Louise lake region was lowered rapidly by erosion of the spillway to 747 m. The drainage of the 747 m lake was concentrated in the spillway leading west from the West Fork Gulkana River. This spillway or a rock threshold downstream apparently was stable enough to permit formation of basin-wide, apparently undeformed, shoreline systems at 747 m, and, on recession, local shorelines at 717 m and 700 m and lower levels. The level of the 747 m lake that was confined to about 9000 km2 of the present Copper River Basin fluctuated for one or more reasons such as: the volume of ice added to or withdrawn from the system, because of changes in water budget (assuming no outflow), and/or because of temporary releases through the only outlets, perhaps Mentasta Pass, but importantly, the Copper River canyon. The 747 m lake persisted until glaciers had withdrawn to well within the Chugach Mountains, perhaps 10 to 20 km from the present glaciers.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr86390","usgsCitation":"Williams, J.R., and Galloway, J.P., 1986, Map of Western Copper River Basin, Alaska, Showing Lake Sediments and Shorelines, Glacial Moraines, and Location of Stratigraphic Sections and Radiocarbon-Dated Samples: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 86-390, Report: 35 p.; Map: 37 x 36 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr86390.","productDescription":"Report: 35 p.; Map: 37 x 36 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":134663,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0390/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":83372,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0390/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":83373,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1986/0390/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","projection":"Universal Transverse Mercator","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -148,61.5 ], [ -148,63 ], [ -144.75,63 ], [ -144.75,61.5 ], [ -148,61.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a91e4b07f02db656bd5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, John R.","contributorId":107260,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":233306,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Galloway, John P. jgallway@usgs.gov","contributorId":3345,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Galloway","given":"John","email":"jgallway@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":233305,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers and many interconnecting sloughs meandered back and forth across the tidelands, frequently overflowing their banks. Approximately 1 ,100 miles of levees were constructed to form about 60 tracts or islands that protect these lands from periodic flooding. The levees were constructed of sand, silt, and peat dredged from the channel bottom and are subject to erosion and failure. Owing to compaction, oxidation of the peat, and other related conditions, the islands are subsiding at rates of up to 0.25 ft/yr. The altitude of the land surface of the islands is often below sea level and below the surface water level in the channel. This condition causes stresses that may contribute to high groundwater levels and levee failure. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requested that the U.S. Geological Survey install and maintain continuous recorders to monitor water levels in each of four wells. Monitoring which began in July 1983 also provided data to show the relation between surface water levels in the channel and groundwater levels in the wells. Dredging began in the area of the Rindge Tract site during the latter part of July 1983. Water levels in all four wells dropped 1.5 to 2 ft between September 1983 and September 1984 and continued to drop thorough December 1984. Hydrologic boundaries divide the Edwards aquifer in the Austin area for which Barton Springs is the major discharge point. This part of the Edwards aquifer provides the municipal, industrial, domestic, and agricultural water supplies for about 30,000 people in the Austin area (southern Travis and northern Hays counties). Discharge from Barton Springs sustains streamflow at the mouth of Barton Creek and flows into Town Lake. Much of the land use within the outcrop area of the Edwards aquifer near Austin is rapidly changing from natural woodland and grassland to commercial and residential developments. Because urban development can result in a substantial degradation of the quality of water that recharges the aquifer, the extent of the recharge zone of the Edwards aquifer was delineated to provide information to the City of Austin for their use in formulating a plan for protecting and managing groundwater quality. The purpose of this report is to define and delineate the areal extent of the recharge zone of the Edwards aquifer in southern Travis and northern Hays Counties. Most water level measurements used in compiling the map were made in 1980; however, in parts of the State where water levels from 1980 were unavailable and where evidence indicated little change in water level, some measurements from as early as 1961 and as late as 1982 were used. Groundwater levels in and near the outcrop areas fluctuate 2 ft or less yearly and no significant long-term declines have occurred. The slow downward trend in water level altitude since early 1976 may be caused by pumpage from the Catahoula aquifer by a rural water system approximately 3 miles away. Recharge to the Catahoula aquifer occurs by rainfall on the upland outcrop-subcrop areas. Saltwater occurs throughout the Catahoula aquifer downgradient from the outcrop area. The ' approximate limit of freshwater ' line on the map indicates the downgradient limit of water with a concentration of chloride &lt; 250 mg/L; the line was determined using water quality data and analysis of resistivity curves from geophysical well logs. Water from the Catahoula aquifer is used for municipal, industrial, and domestic purposes. Total pumpage from the aquifer in Louisiana was slightly over 1.1 million gallons/day in 1980. Local cones of depression result from pumpage just east of Anacoco in Vernon Parish and northwest of Jonesville in Catahoula Parish. The values derived from these calculations were used to prepare a map showing the altitude relative to sea level at which the concentration of dissolved solids in the groundwater reached 10,000 mg/L within a regionally extensive aquifer in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. A dissolved solids concentration of 10,000 mg/L is used to delineate the interface between moderately saline and saline water; 10,000 mg/L dissolved solids was designated to delineate the freshwater-saltwater interface. For a finite difference computer flow model being used this interface represents the location where horizontal flow of freshwater is greatly diminished. 10 ,000 mg/L also is the lower limit for dissolved solids concentrations for water in target zones for injection wells. This 10,000 mg/L dissolved solids line is of value as a water quality indicator; although water containing 3,000 to 10,000 mg/L or more of dissolved solids is too saline for agricultural use (upper limit approximately 3,000 mg/L), it may be useful for some industrial purposes. Waters containing dissolved solids concentrations &gt; 10,000 mg/L have little potential for any use involving human activities. One of the aquifer systems chosen for study was the thick and extensive sequence of sands of Cretaceous and early Tertiary age that underlies the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States. This system, which extends from Mississippi eastward to South Carolina, is called the Southeastern Coastal Plain aquifer system. It can be divided geohydrologically into several separate aquifers. The map presented, one of a series that portray the potentiometric surface, groundwater withdrawals, and recharge areas for aquifers in Alabama that are included in the regional system, deals with the Lisbon aquifer. The Winnipeg Formation, which underlies the Red River Formation, consists of two units: A lower shaley mudstone and an upper medium-grained sandstone. The Red River Formation consists of a lower dolomitic, dark-gray limestone and upper, slightly less-dolomitic, limestone. A porous zone at the top of the upper limestone yields most of the water to wells in the Red River-Winnipeg aquifer.</p>\n<p>Ground water generally flows eastward through the aquifer from North Dakota and discharges upward to wells and to overlying deposits. Yields of wells open to the full thickness of the aquifer range from 100 t 250 gallons per minute. The water is unsuitable for most uses because of the high mineral content. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from about 3,000 milligrams per liter in the eastern part of the aquifer to about 60,000 milligrams per liter in the northwestern corner of Minnesota.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri844111","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. As a part of this program, several maps that had been compiled during the 1960s, were selected for publication through a grant between the State and several regional planning agencies. The slope increases to the east from about 20 ft/mi at the fall line to about 70 ft/mi at the eastern edge of the study area. The irregular nature of the basement surface is demonstrated by: (1) the variable altitudes of the basement surface in the western portion of the study area; (2) the protruding granite/gneiss rock body at a quarry near the Town of Fountain, Pitt County; and (3) the flattening of the basement surface slope observed near the Jones County and Craven County border. These sandstone beds are not laterally or vertically persistent throughout the area and generally are separated shale beds in the Dakota Formation and in the overlying Colorado Group of Cretaceous age. Water in the Cretaceous aquifer is confined by overlying shale and by overlying till as much as 700 feet thick. Locally where the drift is permeable and thin and where the shale is missing, water in the aquifer is unconfined. Groundwater moves away from the Sioux Quartzite Ridge north toward the Minnesota River, south toward Iowa, and eastward toward the Mississippi River. Recharge to the aquifer primarily is by infiltration of precipitation that percolates through the overlying drift and underflow in the aquifer from South Dakota.</p>\n<p>Water in the Cretaceous aquifer consists of five chemical types based on predominant ions; including calcium-magnesium bicarbonate, calcium-magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium sulfate type waters. The base of the Southeastern Coastal Plain aquifer system consists of crystalline rocks, saprolite, Paleozoic rocks, Triassic sedimentary rocks (some of which are intruded by basalt), and Jurassic sedimentary rocks. The permeability of these rocks is extremely low and little exchange of water occurs upward to the overlying Cretaceous aquifers. Porosity values are in the range of 10% or less in some of the rocks, indicating little water is stored in them. The transmissivity values are extremely low, indicating very slow movement of water in these rocks. The small volume of water moving at a very slow rate has a long residence time and is usually mineralized to a greater degree than water in the more permeable overlying sediments.
