Waters collected from the Grande Ronde Basalt (Washington State) and from alluvial deposits in the Hualapai Valley (Arizona) were the most effective at removing plutonium from this glass. Leaching was shown to be incongruent; plutonium was removed from the glass more slowly than the overall glass matrix. The results of these experiments indicate the need to study the leachability of actual waste forms using the actual projected groundwaters that are most likely to come into contact with the waste should a radioactive waste repository be breached.","language":"English","publisher":"American Nuclear Society","doi":"10.13182/NT85-A33672","issn":"00295450","usgsCitation":"Rees, T., Cleveland, J., and Nash, K., 1985, Leaching of plutonium from a radioactive waste glass by eight groundwaters from the western United States: Nuclear Technology, v. 70, no. 1, p. 133-140, https://doi.org/10.13182/NT85-A33672.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"133","endPage":"140","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222446,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"western United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -125.22304850505517,\n              48.96938338954959\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.22304850505517,\n              32.02637914252497\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.34258038032547,\n              32.02637914252497\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.34258038032547,\n              48.96938338954959\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.22304850505517,\n              48.96938338954959\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"70","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-05-13","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a45a1e4b0c8380cd67450","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rees, T.F.","contributorId":26068,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rees","given":"T.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364700,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cleveland, J.M.","contributorId":66734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cleveland","given":"J.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364702,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nash, K.L.","contributorId":27191,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nash","given":"K.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364701,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Because of its widespread occurrence in both wet and dry areas, ground water has been, and is a major factor affecting economic growth and development of the State. In some areas, ground water is used to supplement streamflow for irrigation, public supply, and other uses. In other areas, it is the only water available for use. Many communities obtain their entire water supply from ground-water sources (wells and springs) as do numerous rural and suburban households throughout the State.</p><p>The ground-water reservoirs of Utah contain tremendous quantities of water – many times more than the quantity stored in all the lakes (including Great Salt Lake) and the surface-water reservoirs of the State combined. Water that discharges from those underground reservoirs in seeps and springs is vital in sustaining the flow of streams during dry summer months and in providing the water needed to maintain important wetland habitats. Those same underground reservoirs also provide large quantities of water in carryover storage for use during prolonged droughts.</p><p>The U.S. Geological survey, under cooperative programs with the Utah department of Natural resources and other Federal, State, and local agencies has been studying Utah’s ground-water resources since 1897. Much information has been gained during those studies about the occurrence, availability, and quality of ground water; the withdrawal and use of the water; and the effects of withdrawal. This report summarizes that information in nontechnical language, which is designed for all readers. Readers interested in more detailed information about ground water in specific areas of Utah are referred to the reports listed by LaPray and Hamblin (1980).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","usgsCitation":"Price, D., and Arnow, T., 1985, Three to five sets of seepage measurements were made on each canal during 1982 or 1983. Adjustments for fluctuations in flow were made from information obtained from water-stage recorders operated at selected locations during the time of each seepage run.</p><p>The study showed an overall net loss of about 9.5 cubic feet per second in the Utah and Salt Lake Canal, 11.0 cubic feet per second in the Utah Lake Distributing canal, 20.5 cubic feet per second in the Provo Reservoir canal, 1.5 cubic feet per second in the Draper Irrigation Canal, and 4.0 cubic feet per second in the East Jordan canal. It also showed a net gain of about 6.0 cubic feet per second in the Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal. The gains and losses are attributed primarily to the relation of the canals to the depth of the water table near the canals.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Chemical and isotopic data collected under this program have greatly expanded the knowledge of chemical variability both in space and time. Although no chemical or isotopic changes in hot spring waters can be attributed directly to volcanic or tectonic processes, changes in hot spring chemistry that have been recorded probably relate to interactions between and variations in the quantity of liquid and gas discharged. Stable carbon isotope data are consistent with a carbon source either perform the mantle or from metamorphosed carbonate rocks. Continuous and periodic measurements of hot spring discharge at several sites show significant co seismic and a seismic changes since 1980.</p></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Geothermal Resources Council","publisherLocation":"Davis, CA","usgsCitation":"Farrar, C.D., and Sorey, M., 1985, Monitoring the hydrothermal system in Long Valley caldera, California: Geothermal Resources Council Transactions, v. 9, p. 423-428.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"423","endPage":"428","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":329750,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Mono","city":"Mammoth Lakes","otherGeospatial":"Long Valley caldera","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.00665283203124,\n              37.55002139332707\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.00665283203124,\n              37.79784832917947\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.53836059570311,\n              37.79784832917947\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.53836059570311,\n              37.55002139332707\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.00665283203124,\n              37.55002139332707\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5808868be4b0f497e78e2501","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Farrar, C. This strategy is based on the assumption that the virus is vertically transmitted in association with the gametes. However, evidence for vertical transmission of lHN virus is circumstantial, based mostly on the appearance of the disease outside the enzootic area (the west coast of North America) in fish hatched from eggs obtained from within that area (Plumb 1972; Holway &amp; Smith 1973; Wolf, Quimby, Pettijohn &amp; Landolt 1973, Sano, Nishimura, Okamoto, Yamazaki, Hanada &amp; Watanabe 1977. Carlisle, Schat &amp; Elston 1979). An indirect demonstration of vertical transmission was made by placing known virus-free fish in the water above and below raceways containing fish that suffered an IEEN epizootic in an cffort to climinate waterborne virus as a source of infection (Wingficid &amp; Chan 1970). The fish placed below the raceway developed IHN, due to waterborne virus released from the affected fish in the raceway, but the fish placed above the raceway failed to develop IHN. These results suggested that the source of infection of the fish in the raceway was not the water supply, although it is possible that the virus was no longer present in the water supply at the time the sentinel fish were exposed to the water.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Blackwell Science","doi":"10.1111/j.1365-2761.1985.tb00962.x","usgsCitation":"Mulcahy, D., and Pascho, R., 1985, Vertical transmission of infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus in sockeye salmon, <i>Oncorhynchus nerka</i> (Walbaum): isolation of virus from dead eggs and fry: Journal of Fish Diseases, v. 8, no. 4, p. 393-396, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2761.1985.tb00962.x.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"393","endPage":"396","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":314325,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2006-04-07","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5698d4d3e4b0fbd3f7fa4c74","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mulcahy, D.","contributorId":82642,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mulcahy","given":"D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":588690,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pascho, R.J.","contributorId":65796,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pascho","given":"R.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":588691,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Results confirmed that an early run entered the river in May and June and spawned in tributaries, and a late run entered the river from late June through August and spawned in the main stem. Spawning peaked during August in tributaries influenced by lakes, but during July in other tributaries. Lakes may have increased fall and winter temperatures of downstream waters, enabling successful reproduction for later spawning fish within these tributaries. This hypothesis assumes that hatching and emergence can be completed in a shorter time in lake-influenced waters. The time of upstream migration and spawning (mid- to late August) of the late run is unique among chinook stocks in Cook Inlet. This behavior may have developed only because two large lakes (Kenai and Skilak) directly influence the main-stem Kenai River. If run timing is genetically controlled, and if the various components of the two runs are isolated stocks that have adapted to predictable stream temperatures, there are implications for stock transplantation programs and for any activities of man that alter stream temperatures.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing ","doi":"10.1139/f85-089","usgsCitation":"Burger, C.V., Wilmot, R., and Wangaard, D., 1985, Comparisons of spawning areas and times for two runs of chinook salmon (<i>Oncorhynchus tshawytscha</i>) in the Kenai River, Alaska: Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, v. 42, no. 4, p. 693-700, https://doi.org/10.1139/f85-089.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"693","endPage":"700","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":314320,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Kenai River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -152.38037109375,\n              59.789579955087405\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.38037109375,\n              60.930432202923335\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.02978515625,\n              60.930432202923335\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.02978515625,\n              59.789579955087405\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.38037109375,\n              59.789579955087405\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"42","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5698d4c3e4b0fbd3f7fa4c1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burger, C. Samples were collected 1.6 and 21.1 km below Barren River Lake dam in 1979, 1980, and 1981 and in a reservoir tributary in 1980 and 1981. An indication of environmental stress in the macroinvertebrate community was observed at both tailwater stations, whereas macroinvertebrates in the natural tributary stream had the characteristics commonly associated with a ‘healthy’ community. Densities of macroinvertebrates in tailwaters were highest during periods of low-stable flows and lowest during fluctuating and high-stable flows. Changes in temperature cycles and water quality were also considered factors in reducing macroinvertebrate abundance in the tailwater. Dominant macroinvertebrate taxa in tailwaters were primarily small organisms with a high tolerance for dynamic living conditions. Of these, aquatic Diptera, Oligochaeta, </span><i class=\"EmphasisTypeItalic \">Caenis, Cheumatopsyche</i><span>, and Planariidae were most common. Included are stage information at 83 lakes and stage-frequency data for 32 of these lakes that had sufficient record for analysis. Lakes are classified by a hydrologic-topographic lake classification scheme as ground-water flowthrough (GWF) lakes, surface-water drainage (SWD) lakes, and surface-water flow-through (SWF) lakes. Lakes within the same class were found to have similar water-level fluctuations. The lake-stage records indicate that most annual maximums occur during the months of May and June for all three classes. Annual minimum lake levels generally occur in September for surface-water drainage lakes, in March for surface-water flowthrough lakes, and in November for ground-water flow-through lakes. Data for each lake include location, period of water-level record, hydrologic classification, drainage area, surface area, lake volume, maximum depth, long-term mean stage and its standard deviation, maximum and minimum observed lake stage, and the average annual lake-stage fluctuation.","language":"English","publisher":"Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey","publisherLocation":"Madison, WI","issn":"0512-0640","collaboration":"In cooperation with University of Wisconsin-Extension: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey","usgsCitation":"House, L.B., 1985, Stage fluctuations of Wisconsin lakes: Information Circular 49, iv, 84 p.","productDescription":"iv, 84 p.","numberOfPages":"91","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261388,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/othergov/70039215/report.pdf"},{"id":261389,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/othergov/70039215/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -92.9,42.5 ], [ -92.9,47.05 ], [ -86.81666666666666,47.05 ], [ -86.81666666666666,42.5 ], [ -92.9,42.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9694e4b08c986b31b5c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"House, Leo B.","contributorId":70766,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"House","given":"Leo","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":465811,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

American kestrel (Falco sparverius) nestlings were orally dosed daily with 5 ?l/g of distilled water (controls), 10 mg/kg, 25 mg/kg, or 60 mg/kg of paraquat dichloride (1, 1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) in distilled water from day 1 through day 10. Forty-four percent of the nestlings given 60 mg/kg died after 4 days. Significant differences in growth rates occurred between controls and all paraquat-dosed groups. Reduced skeletal growth occurred in the humerus and femur in the 25 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg groups, and in the radius-ulna and tibiotarsus in the 60 mg/kg group. Skeletons were otherwise normal in appearance. Histopathological examination revealed localized focal necrosis in the liver of one nestling in the 60 mg/kg group and tubular cell degeneration and focal tubular dilation in the kidneys of another. The brain and lungs were unremarkable histologically. These findings suggest that altricial nestling kestrels are more sensitive to paraquat exposure than young or adult birds of precocial species.","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF01055536","usgsCitation":"Hoffman, D.J., Franson, J.C., Pattee, O.H., and Bunck, C., 1985, Survival, growth, and histopathological effects of paraquat ingestion in nestling American kestrels (Falco sparverius): Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, v. 14, no. 4, p. 495-500, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01055536.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"495","endPage":"500","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197804,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"14","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db6880c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoffman, D. Mean DDE residues (breakdown product of DDT) in eggs declined significantly in Black-crowned Night-Herons and showed a downward trend in Black-necked Stilts and Snowy Egrets; however, no trend was apparent for White-faced Ibis. Some night-herons, egrets, and ibis laid thin-shelled eggs that cracked; eggshell thickness was negatively correlated with DDE residues in the egg contents. Ibis were the most sensitive species to DDE- induced shell thinning. Generally, reduced reproductive success for ibis started at lower DDE egg residues (3 ppm) than for either Snowy Egrets (5 ppm) or night-herons (8 ppm). Egg residue profiles, band recoveries, biotelemetry studies, and residues in fish and other prey items implicate the southwestern United States (a wintering area) as an important source of DDT-DDE that caused the most serious reproductive problem encountered during the study (in night-herons nesting at Ruby Lake, Nevada). Available evidence indicates that the three other species, together with night- herons from Oregon and Idaho, winter in Latin America.","language":"English","publisher":"Waterbird Data were collected on clutch sizes, nest spacing, and nesting success. The principal null hypothesis tested was that no difference in reproductive success exists between beach and marsh habitats. Nests were monitored from egg-laying in mid-May until mid-July when young fledged. Clutch sizes varied among colonies and across years but no systematic effect of year, habitat, or colony size on mean clutch size per colony was detected. Analyses of nest productivity (estimated using both the Mayfield method and using a colony average) failed to reveal significant effects of habitat or colony size but showed a stronger year effect. Storm tide flooding and egg chick disappearance (presumably predation by Herring Gulls Larus argentatus and Laughing Gulls L. atricilla nesting nearby) accounted for most nest failures. Losses due to both these mortality factors were unpredictable from year to year. Nest spacing in salt marsh colonies was much closer than it was on barrier beaches. In mixed-species colonies with Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger), distances between tern and skimmer nests were also much smaller in marsh colonies than they were on beaches. The limited amount of wrack (windrows of dead, matted vegetation) preferred by marsh-nesting terns probably explains these spacing differences. Several lines of evidence suggest that terns prefer beaches to marshes for nesting, however, the uncertainty of predation and flooding may often obscure any intrinsic differences in habitat quality. Long-term field studies are essential for testing hypotheses related to differential fitness of individuals among habitats.","language":"English","publisher":"Waterbird Society","doi":"10.2307/1521066","usgsCitation":"Erwin, R., and Smith, D.C., 1985, Habitat comparisons and productivity in nesting common terns on the mid-Atlantic coast: Colonial Waterbirds, v. 8, no. 2, p. 155-165, https://doi.org/10.2307/1521066.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"155","endPage":"165","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198321,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649681","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Erwin, R.M.","contributorId":57396,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erwin","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335352,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, D.
