The major water issues in the State concern the management of these water resources in regard to their availability areally across the State and temporally over the changing seasons and cycles of weather. Management also concerns the protection of the supply of water from deterioration through contamination. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Nebraska began providing data to allow for better management of the State 's water near the end of the 19th Century. Since then the USGS activities have continued and have included the monitoring of hydrologic conditions, detailed studies to describe the hydrology of specific areas, and studies to add to the basic scientific knowledge of hydrology. Projects in all these areas continue. The work has been supported through Federal funding, through support from other Federal agencies, and through cooperative programs with many State and local agencies. This report summarizes these activities which are ongoing in the State of Nebraska. This was done to determine the plausible minerals and clay types in the aquifers that may be reacting with groundwater and affecting the water quality. The purpose of this report is only to present the whole rock x-ray and clay-fraction mineralogy data. Nineteen surface samples or samples from outcrop of Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial basin deposits in the central and southern Rio Grande rift were collected and analyzed. The analysis of the samples consisted of grain size analysis, and clay-size fraction mineralogy and semiquantitative analysis of the relative abundance of different clay mineral groups present. The study, done in cooperation with the City of Bellevue, was part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's National Urban Runoff program. The objectives of the study were to (1) establish a consistent and accessible data base for typical urban watersheds; (2) determine the magnitude and frequency of storm-runoff loads of water-quality constituents from three catchments in the city; (3) develop methods for estimating storm and annual loads of water-quality constituents from unsampled catchments in the study area; and (4) test the effectiveness of storm-water-quality management alternatives, such as street sweeping and detention storage, for the attenuation of constituent loads carried in storm runoff. This report presents data collected during the study period. Data include rainfall and runoff amounts, physical characteristics of the catchments, the chemical quality of storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, constituent loads in storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, and storm characteristics data, such as rainfall and runoff volumes. The work of the Ohio District is carried out through the District office in Columbus and a field office in New Philadelphia. Collection of basic data needed for continuing determination and evaluation of the quantity, quality, and use of Ohio 's water resources is the responsibility of the District 's Hydrologic Surveillance Section. The Hydrologic Investigations Section conducts analytical and interpretive water-resource appraisals describing the occurrence, availability, and the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of surface and groundwater. In addition to introductory material describing the structure of the Ohio District, information is presented on current projects, sites at which basic surface- and groundwater data are collected , and reports of Ohio 's water resources published by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating agencies. One of these marks, 3219, Vincent, California (fig. 1), lies within the area of the Pacific-North American plate boundary; the other, 22Q, Bill Williams River, Arizona (fig. 1), falls within what is believed to be a singularly stable section of southwestern Arizona. Because the levelings that produced these heights were characterized by especially disparate routes with respect to both terrain and climate, the resulting heights provide a test for the existence and magnitude of path-dependent error in geodetic leveling. These two marks were chosen both because of their relative stability with respect to adjacent marks and because their tectonic stability (or instability) can be inferred from the geologic record. Specifically, we can reasonably speculate that 3219 may have sustained measurably significant tectonic displacements during the 20th century, whereas 22Q probably has remained virtually invariant with respect to any fixed datum during the same period. </p><p>Bench mark 3219 is a standard Geological Survey iron post stamped \"3219\" near the Southern Pacific Railroad station at Vincent (U.S. Geological Survey, 1898, p. 392); 22Q is a brass cap stamped \"22Q (MWD)\" set in a concrete post located in a gully immediately north of the Bill Williams River, Arizona (USC&amp;GS Quad. 34114). 3219 was established by the Geological Survey no later than 1897 (Gannett and Baldwin, 1907, p. 365); 22Q was established by the Metropolitan Water District of southern California in advance of the 1931 control surveys along the projected route of the Colorado River Aqueduct.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr85399","usgsCitation":"Gilmore, T.D., and Elliot, M.R., 1985, Sequentially and alternatively developed heights for two representative bench marks: near Palmdale, California and along the Bill Williams River, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-399, ii, 50 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85399.","productDescription":"ii, 50 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":42375,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0399/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"509.13 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":145158,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0399/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona, California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.058349609375,\n              32.48196313217176\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.642822265625,\n              32.48196313217176\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.642822265625,\n              35.55904339525896\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.058349609375,\n              35.55904339525896\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.058349609375,\n              32.48196313217176\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fee4b07f02db5f73c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gilmore, Thomas D.","contributorId":64235,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gilmore","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168428,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Elliot, Michael R.","contributorId":189355,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Elliot","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168427,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The project has been divided into three phases; this report presents the results of the first phase that characterizes current water quality data collection activities in Colorado and Ohio, including costs of sample analysis, and identifies those data potentially applicable and readily available for addressing selected water quality questions of regional and national scope. An estimated $63 million was spent during 1984 in the two States for only the laboratory analysis of water quality samples. For many agencies, total program costs are believed to be more than twice the laboratory costs. About four times more samples were reported for Ohio than for Colorado. Water quality data collection programs were tested against a set of five screening criteria. In Colorado, 34 percent of all samples met all five criteria; whereas, in Ohio, 5 percent of all samples met all five criteria. In Colorado, analyses from 114,300 samples (34 percent of the total), and in Ohio, analyses from 57,000 samples (5 percent of the total) potentially are applicable and readily available for addressing water quality questions of regional and national scope. These samples represent about $8 million in estimated laboratory costs. The measurements were made in mid-winter when pumping was minimal and water levels had recovered, for the most part, form the effects of pumping during the previous irrigation season. Annual hydrologic data are provided for relating water level changes from a ' base-reference year ' (predevelopment year), a year of abnormally high rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966 or 1974), and each of 7 consecutive years of measurement (1979-85). The ' base-reference year ' is designated as 1940 for the southwestern area, 1944 for the south-central area, and 1950 for the northwestern, west-central, and Equus Beds areas. Data also are provided for relating the average annual water level changes, saturated thickness of the deposits, and percentage changes in saturated thickness. Samples were obtained by pumping water from the entire well bore (composite sample), and, in three instances, by pumping from one or more isolated intervals within a well bore. Sodium is the most abundant cation , and biocarbonate is the most abundant anion in all water samples. Samples from the Paleozoic carbonate aquifer penetrated by well UE-25p 1 contain higher relative concentrations of calcium and magnesium than samples from overlying volcanic tuffs. Values of the stable isotope concentrations of oxygen and hydrogen are relatively negative (light) and have deuterium excess values ranging from +5 to +10. The distribution of uncorrected radiocarbon ages of tuffaceous groundwater from samples within one kilometer of the exploratory block ranges from 12,000 to 18,500 years before present. Variation in the inorganic, stable, and radioactive isotope composition of samples indicates a significant degree of lateral and vertical chemical inhomogeneity in groundwater of the Yucca Mountain area. New thrusts toward long-term goals based on the Kansas State Water plan demand strong communication and coordination between all water-related agencies within the State. The seminar discussed in this report was an initial step by the Kansas Water Office to assure the continued presence of a technical-coordination process and to provide an opportunity for the U.S. Geological Survey to summarize their technical-informational activities in Kansas for the benefit of State and Federal water agencies with the State. The seminar was held on July 8 and 9, 1985, in Lawrence, Kansas.
