The project is designed to monitor long-term effects on the ground-water resources of the mesa as a result of withdrawals from the aquifer by a strip-mining operation. Withdrawals from the N aquifer by the mine have increased from 95 acre-ft in 1968 to more than 4,000 acre-ft in 1984. Water levels in the confined area of the aquifer have declined as much as 75 feet in some municipal and observation wells within about a 15-mile radius of the mine well field. Part of the drawdown in municipal wells is due to local pumpage. Water levels have not declined in wells tapping the unconfined area of the aquifer. Chemical analysis indicate no significant changes in the quality of water from wells that tap the N aquifer or from springs that discharge from several stratigraphic units, including the N aquifer, since pumping began at the mine. The Upper Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water level measurements were made on approximately 1,000 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown mostly by 5-foot contour intervals. In the Fernandina Beach area of Nassau County, a 40-foot interval is used to show a deep cone of depression. The potentiometric surface ranged from 130 feet above sea level in Polk County to 91 feet below sea level in Nassau County. Water levels in key wells were mostly about 1 foot below average for September but were trending upward in response to the rainfall that broke the drought-like dry season. Most levels in the district were below the levels of September 1984. Declines of 3 to 5 feet from September 1984 levels were common in the midwestern part of the district. However, most September 1985 levels ranged from 2 to 7 feet above those of May 1985. Most previous work on the Cenozoic has focused on the Quaternary surficial deposits and on the outcrops of older rocks at the margins of the valley, although ground-water resource studies of the upper Cenozoic deposits have used subsurface information (for example, Davis and others, 1959; Croft, 1972). One purpose of this report is to show the distribution and stratigraphic relations of Tertiary units under the valley and represents, in part, an attempt to extend correlations from Tertiary units previously recognized in outcrop at the margins of the valley into the subsurface. A second purpose is to depict the structure of the Tertiary rocks by cross sections and by a structure contour map of a middle Tertiary horizon.</p>\n<p>The emphasis in this report is on the Tertiary rocks of the northern part of the San Joaquin Valley, although pre-Tertiary stratigraphic units are shown on the cross sections where information was available. They serve to emphasize the discordance between the Neogene and the older units. The three-dimensional digital model used to analyze the test approximated the response to the test. Types of errors involved are sampling error, spatial error, temporal error, and sediment-discharge error. The standard error of estimate is used to represent errors. Suspended-sediment data for 17 U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations in Arizona, California, Nebraska, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Washington are used in applications of the procedures. For the study sites, the magnitudes of the different types of error apparently vary directly with percentage of sediment-water mixture that is sand; when the percentage sand is relatively high, magnitudes of the different types of error have a relatively wide range. For seven sites of the Sacramento River , Calif., and its tributaries, the standard sampling error apparently can range from 2.5 percent when percentage sand is relatively low to 20 percent when percentage sand is relatively high. For 16 sites in Arizona, California, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania, the coefficient of variation for concentrations of suspended sediment across streams apparently can range from 2.5 percent (low percentage sand) to 70 percent (high percentage sand). The validity of applying this law to transient flows has been mathematically verified for most ground-water flow conditions. The verification was accomplished through application of Hankel transforms to linearized Navier-Stokes equations which described flow in a small diameter cylindrical tube. The data were used in a semiquantitative analysis to predict the effects of bridge replacement and the attendant resuspension of bottom sediments, on the hydraulics and quality of water and bottom sediments. The bay-bottom configuration at the bridge site was defined, and continuous tidal stage and tidal velocity data were collected for about a month. In addition, eight bottom-sediment samples were collected near the bridge and analyzed. Results of the hydraulic analysis show that the proposed bridge should not have any measurable effect on the net water transport at the bridge cross section. The sediment data indicate that bottom sediments are relatively unpolluted in the vicinity of the bridge. Seventy-five percent of the resuspended bottom sediments will probably settle within 186 m of the bridge during an average ebb tide. Metals and nutrients released from the sediments to the water column are expected to be diluted far below detection limits. The extra oxygen demand exerted by the resuspended bottom sediments is also expected to be far less than ambient biochemical oxygen demand of the water column.
