The program is conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Wyoming State engineer and the Wyoming Department of Economic Planning and Development. This report contains hydrographs for most observation wells showing water-level fluctuations from 1974 through 1983. Also included in the report are maps showing locations of observation wells and tabulations of well depths, use of water, geologic source, records available, and highest and lowest water levels for the period of record. Studies are now in progress in Austin, and Houston. Studies have been completed in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas.</p>\n<p>The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Houston, began studies in the Houston metropolitan area in 1964. The program was expanded in 1968 to include collection of water-quality data. The objectives of the Houston urban-hydrology study are as follows:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydro!ogic analyses, the magnitude and frequency of flood peaks and flood volumes.</li>\n<li>To determine the effect of urban development on flood peaks and volumes.</li>\n<li>To ascertain the variation in water quality for different flow conditions and different seasons.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>This report, the eighteenth in a series of reports to be published annually, is primarily applicable to objective 2. The 7-day 10-year low-flow ranged from 0 ft3 to 239(3)/s. The methods used for estimating these characteristics also are discussed. Surface-water field data included one or more measurements of pH, water temperature, and specific conductance at 45 sites in and adjacent to the mine area. At nine of these sites, daily data on discharge, specific conductance, and water temperature were collected during parts of 1981-82 by using electronic monitor-recorder systems. Ground-water field data included one or more of the water-quality measurements listed above at 71 piezometers in the mine area. Borehole geophysical data included neutron-moisture, neutron-porosity, gamma-gamma density, natural gamma, and temperature logs at three sites. Mineralogic and hydrologic data were obtained for cores taken from nine test holes. One or more surface-water samples from 26 sites were analyzed for major cations, major anions, and a wide range of minor inorganic constituents. Single ground-water samples from 36 piezometers were analyzed for the same array of major and minor constituents. Presently (1984), 94 streamflow-gag ing stations are operated in North Dakota on a budget of $663,000. Station type, data uses, and funding sources are identified for each of the 94 stations. Data from all stations have multiple uses. All stations have sufficient justification for continuation, but five stations primarily are used in short-term research studies. The remaining 210 wells not previously measured and required complete inventorying. The report consists of maps of the study area and locations of the observation wells. An appendix of pertinent well data includes: legal location, land-surface altitude, depth-to-water, water-table altitude, date of measurement, and type of well. Associated with the increase in mining activities is a greater need to know the effects of mining activities on the water quantity and quality of near-surface aquifers. The near-surface lignite beds mined at the Big Brown Lignite Mine are from the Calvert Bluff Formation of the Wilcox Group of Eocene age, which is a minor aquifer generally having water suitable for all uses, in eastern Freestone County, Texas. One of the potential hydro!ogic effects of surface-coal mining is a change in the quality of ground water associated with replacement of aquifer materials by mine spoils. The purpose of this report is to compile and categorize geologic, mineralogic, geochemical, and hydrologic data for the Big Brown Lignite Mine and surrounding area in east-central Texas. Included are results of pasteextract analyses, constituent concentrations in water from batch-mixing experiments, sulfur analyses, and minerals or mineral groups detected by X-ray diffraction in 12 spoil material samples collected from 3 locations at the mine site. Also, common-constituent and trace-constituent concentrations in water from eight selected wells, located updip and downdip from the mine, are presented. Dissolved-solids concentrations in water from batch-mixing experiments vary from 12 to 908 milligrams per liter. All stations have sufficient justification for continuation although 10 are primarily used to provide data for short-term research studies. The continued operation of these 10 stations should be evaluated when the studies have been completed. Transmissivity of the Dakota aquifer, determined from analyses of pumping tests, ranges from 100 to 7,100 sq ft/day. Water in the Dakota aquifer is a calcium bicarbonate type water, similar to water in the High Plains aquifer, in the subcrop area. However, in areas distant from the subcrop, water in the Dakota aquifer is a sodium bicarbonate type water with dissolved solids concentrations in excess of 500 mg/L. Gradual declines in the potentiometric surface of the Dakota aquifer have occurred since the onset of pumpage in the 1960's; however, water levels in some wells have risen during the late 1970's. A digital computer model of 3-D groundwater flow was developed to simulate hydrologic conditions of a five-layer hydrologic system for 1975-82 conditions. The major components of the simulated 1975-82 water budget were well discharge from the High Plains aquifer and loss of ground water from storage in the High Plains aquifer. Although downward leakage from the High Plains aquifer in the study area represented only 18,000 acre-ft of the 1,365 ,000 acre-ft discharged from the High Plains aquifer during 1982 , it was a major source of inflow to the Dakota aquifer. Changes in storage in the Dakota aquifer in the study area during 1982 were about 5,000 acre-ft. A base-line projection was made using 1982 simulated hydraulic heads from the calibrated model and 1982 rates of pumpage from both the High Plains and the Dakota aquifers for comparison with eight additional projection simulations in which maximum pumpage from the Dakota aquifer at the end of the projections ranged from about 78,000 to 294,000 acre-ft/yr. The results from the projections indicate that: (1) pumpage from the Dakota aquifer will have a limited effect on hydraulic heads in the High Plains aquifer, (2) drawdown in the hydraulic heads in the Dakota aquifer will result in conversion of much of the Dakota aquifer to unconfined conditions, (3) change in storage will become the major water-budget component for the Dakota aquifer, (4) continuation of 1982 rates of withdrawal from the High Plains aquifer will result in dewatering of a substantial part of the aquifer in the study area.
