The Honolulu Magnetic Observatory is 1 of 14 that the U.S. Geological Survey Geomag­netism Program operates at various locations across the United States and its territories.</p><p>Data from these observatories, Honolulu, and those operated by institutions in foreign countries, record a variety of magnetic signals related to a wide diversity of physical phenomena in the Earth’s interior and its surrounding outer-space environment. The interdisciplinary nature of the data collected and the breadth of applications make UAS technology applicable to multiple scientific investigations. The Aerial Imaging and Mapping (AIM) group at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center provides UAS services to scientists to advance the science mission of the Coastal-Marine Hazards and Resources Program. Scientists at the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center use UASs to acquire imagery of coastal and wetland environments, which is then used to produce detailed topographic and visual reflectance datasets. StreamStats (<a href=\"https://water.usgs.gov/osw/streamstats/\" data-mce-href=\"https://water.usgs.gov/osw/streamstats/\">https://water.usgs.gov/osw/streamstats/</a>) is a map-based web application that provides analytical tools useful for water-resources planning and management and many engineering purposes. The web application delineates drainage areas at user-selected sites on South Carolina streams, generates basin characteristics, and, where appropriate, estimates peak-flow statistics for the selected sites. StreamStats users also can obtain published flow statistics for USGS streamgages, such as peak flow, low flow, and daily mean flow durations.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological To date, all active Mississippi River reintroductions have targeted marsh habitat. However, a 57 cubic meter per second (2,000 cubic foot per second) river reintroduction is being designed and implemented by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana to rehabilitate a degraded and submerging swamp forest of approximately 16,583 hectares (40,977 acres) in the Maurepas Swamp; 30 percent of the project area is closed forest canopy, 58 percent is transitional forest, and 12 percent is open canopy wetland (severely degraded forest and open marsh). The goal of this project is to reduce or minimize loss of swamp forest habitat in the project area through reintroduction of Mississippi River water. River reconnection has often been stated as the most critical step necessary to rehabilitate and preserve the integrity of the natural and cultural resources of the Maurepas Swamp Freshwater supplies are limited in this semiarid area, and oil and gas development can require large volumes of freshwater. Groundwater is the primary source of water for many water users in the Williston Basin, so to better understand these resources, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessed the groundwater availability in this area. The final phase of this assessment included a computer model that simulates how groundwater flows in the aquifer systems and simulates how changes in water use and natural conditions may affect the water resources. These results provide a tool for land and water-resource managers to determine how water can be used for multiple purposes in the Williston Basin. Fine-grained silts and clays are of particular concern because they can degrade habitat and often carry phosphorus and (or) other contaminants harmful to humans and aquatic life. Sediment-impaired water bodies, usually identified by fair to poor macroinvertebrate index scores, are placed on the 303(d) list of impaired waters, where a sediment Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is developed under the Clean Water Act (<a href=\"https://www.epa.gov/tmdl\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.epa.gov/tmdl\">https://www.epa.gov/tmdl</a>). This raises the unanswerable question, “When will it erupt again?” An alternative, answerable, and informative question is, “How often has it erupted?”</p><p>In the Mammoth Lakes Sierra, geologists have mapped in great detail all the lavas and ash deposits produced by those 60 eruptions. They have dated almost all of them by laboratory methods, showing that eruptions have been repetitive and persistent, though not quite regular, over the last quarter-million years. The North San Francisco Bay Public-Supply Aquifer System study unit (NSF-PA) was sampled in 2004. The North San Francisco Bay Shallow Aquifer System study unit (NSF-SA) was sampled in 2012. The NSF-PA and NSF-SA largely coincide areally; however, they represent different parts of the aquifer system vertically. The NSF-PA examined deeper groundwater primarily used for public supply, whereas the NSF-SA examined relatively shallow groundwater primarily used for domestic supply. Increasing demand for water makes the accountability of water use an important issue.</p><p>A few State and local agencies in Washington collect water-use information for specific categories of water use; currently, only the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) compiles cumulative water-use information across the State for a comprehensive range of uses.</p><p>Since 1950, on a 5-year cycle, the USGS has compiled and published estimates of water withdrawal and use for specific categories aggregated at the county, State, and national level. The information is shared publicly through the USGS Water Use in the United States website (<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https://water.usgs.gov/watuse/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mce-href=\"https://water.usgs.gov/watuse/\">https://water.usgs.gov/watuse/</a>) and national publications that detail water use definitions, categories, trends, and data for every state. The data are compiled individually by each state from available sources, and are augmented by estimates from national models for categories that have limited data. Understanding the flow paths and rates of exchange between the surface water in the river and the groundwater in the underlying Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer is vital for understanding the water budget and streamflow variations. In areas where the Guadalupe River crosses the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer outcrop, the surface-water and groundwater exchanges are not well characterized. Traditional methods to measure these interactions, such as measuring differences in surface-water flows at different locations to infer gains and losses between the locations, are not feasible along this stretch of the Guadalupe River because of upstream dams that cause large daily fluctuations in streamflow. Although the region was sparsely populated, the quake on the Hayward Fault was one of the most destructive in California’s history. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) studies show that similar Hayward Fault quakes have repeatedly jolted the region in the past and that the fault may be ready to produce another magnitude 6.8 to 7.0 earthquake. Such an earthquake could unexpectedly change people’s lives and impact the Bay Area’s infrastructure and economy, but updated building codes and retrofits, as well as planning, community training, and A geologic time scale is composed of standard stratigraphic divisions based on rock sequences and is calibrated in years.</p><p>Geologists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), State geological surveys, academia, and other organizations require a consistent time scale to be used in communicating ages of geo­logic units in the United States. Many international debates have occurred over names and boundaries of units, and various time scales have been used by the geoscience community.</p><p>For consistent usage of time terms, the USGS Geologic Names Committee and the Association of American State Geologists devel­oped the<strong> Divisions of Geologic Time</strong>; the 2018 update in this fact sheet contains the unit names and boundary age estimates ratified by the International Commission on Stratigraphy in 2018. The illustrations are based on observed data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Streamflow Network (U.S. Geological Survey, 2018a). The period of 1930–2017 was used because the number of streamgages before 1930 was too small to provide representative data for computing statistics for most regions of the country.</p><p>In the summary, reference is made to the term “runoff,” which is the depth to which a river basin, State, or other geographic area would be covered with water if all the streamflow within the area during a specified period was uniformly distributed on it. The value of runoff quantifies the magnitude of water flowing through the Nation’s rivers and streams in&nbsp; measurement units that can be compared from one area to another. In this summary, runoff for a specified period and geographic area is computed from all streamgages with&nbsp; complete record in the geographic area.</p><p>In all the graphics, a rank of 1 indicates the highest annual flow of all years analyzed and 88 indicates the lowest annual flow of all years. Rankings of streamflow are grouped&nbsp; into much below normal, below normal,&nbsp;normal, above normal, and much above normal based on percentiles of flow (less than 10 percent, 10–24 percent, 25–75 percent, 76–90 percent, and greater than 90 percent,&nbsp;respectively; U.S. Geological Survey, 2018b). States or water-resources regions are presented in the text in order of ranking; a highest or lowest rank is not shown when there are ties in the rankings.
