On the basis of material properties, groundwater levels, and seismic history of the blockage, slope stability with and without earthquake-induced forces was determined. Results indicated that the blockage will not fail from gravitational forces at September 1983 groundwater levels. An increase of 25 feet or more in water levels could cause local failures, but massive failure of the blockage is improbable. Blockage slopes are potentially unstable for present and higher water levels if an earthquake with magnitude greater than 6.0 should occur. Retrogressive slope failures are possible, but lowering of the blockage crest below lake level and consequent lake breakout are considered remote. Significant earthquake shaking could cause cracks in the blockage that might facilitate piping.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1345","usgsCitation":"Meyer, W., Sabol, M.A., Glicken, H., and Voight, B., 1985, The effects of ground water, slope stability, and seismic hazard on the stability of the South Fork Castle Creek blockage in the Mount St. Helens area, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1345, iv, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1345.","productDescription":"iv, 42 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408049,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74275.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":65253,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1345/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":122524,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1345/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Mount St. Helens area, South Fork Castle Creek blockage","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -122.2861,\n 46.2569\n ],\n [\n -122.2736,\n 46.2569\n ],\n [\n -122.2736,\n 46.2667\n ],\n [\n -122.2861,\n 46.2667\n ],\n [\n -122.2861,\n 46.2569\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65def4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meyer, William","contributorId":87538,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meyer","given":"William","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":219978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sabol, M. Kings Bay and Cumberland Sound, the site of the Poseidon Submarine Base in southeast Georgia, are experiencing high rates of sediment deposition and accumulation, which are causing serious navigational and operational problems. Velocity, bathymetry, turbidity, and bottom-material data suggest sediment transported from lower Kings Bay is accumulating deposits of suspended sediment transported from Cumberland Sound on the floodtide and from upper Kings Bay and the tidal march drained by Marianna Creek on the ebbtide. Suspended-sediment discharges computed for consecutive 13-hr ebbtides and floodtides showed that a net quantity of suspended sediment was transported seaward from upper Kings Bay and Marianna Creek. A net landward transport of suspended sediment computed at the St. Marys Entrance indicated areas seaward of St. Marys Entrance may be supplying sediment to the shoaling areas of the estuary, including lower Kings Bay. The Upper Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water-level measurements were made on approximately 1,000 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown mostly by 5-foot contour intervals. In the Fernandina Beach area of Nassau County a 30-foot interval is used to show a deep cone of depression. The potentiometric surface ranged from 125 feet above sea level in Polk County to 74 feet below sea level in Nassau County. Water levels in key wells ranged from 1 to 8 feet below average for May in response to lack of rainfall and an attendant increase in pumpage. Many levels in the district were considerably below the levels of May 1984. Declines of 5 to 7 feet from May 1984 levels were common in the western and northern parts of the district. However, the largest declines from May 1984 levels were mostly in well fields along the coastline. Levels in some wells reached record lows. The aquifer in Kansas underlies an area of 31,000 square miles in the western and south-central part. This aquifer is a hydraulically connected assemblage of unconsolidated water-bearing deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age. Maps published at a scale of 1:500,000 show the altitude and configuration of the water table in Kansas during 1970. Ground water moved from higher altitudes in the western part of the High Plains to lower altitudes in the eastern part under an average gradient of 10 feet per mile. The upgradient flexure of water-table contours along some of the valleys indicates that ground water was discharged to the streams in those areas. Access is by way of the Al Madihah – Ha’il paved highway to Hulayfah or Gazzalah, thence by unimproved road to Zarghat, located a few km from the eastern margin and the southeast corner of the quadrangle. Desert tracks lead from Zarghat to the remainder of the area, but a large part of the quadrangle is underlain by the Tertiary and Quaternary Harrat Ithnayn; access over this terrain by vehicle is difficult.
\n
The area has low relief, marked only by Paleozoic sandstone remnants, volcanic cones in the harrat, and Jabal Bushra. Drainage on the harrat trends generally northerly, but rainfall is low. The climate is typical of inland Saudi Arabia, with summer day temperatures reaching 45-50°C, and with cold nights. Temperatures can reach 0°C in winter. Vegetation is sparse.
\n
The area is sparsely populated, and permanent water is available from wells at Ash Shamila.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr85578","usgsCitation":"Fairer, G., 1985, Reconnaissance geologic map of the Ash Shamila quadrangle, sheet 26/40 A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-578, 1 map :photocopy ;56 x 50 cm., on sheet 95 x 71 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85578.","productDescription":"1 map :photocopy ;56 x 50 cm., on sheet 95 x 71 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":176593,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":80208,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0578/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 40,\n 26.5 \n ],\n [\n 40,\n 27\n ],\n [\n 40.5,\n 27\n ],\n [\n 40.5,\n 26.5 \n ],\n [\n 40,\n 26.5\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640fd6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fairer, G.
