As water demands in southeast Florida continue to increase, further intrusion could be related to increased pumping from well fields. Implementation of additional management practices to further reduce canal discharge to the ocean would tend to sustain water levels high enough to retard intrusion during dry seasons. In Kansas, the aquifer underlies an area of 30,900 square miles in the western and south-central part. The aquifer is a hydraulically connected aggregation of unconsolidated water-bearing deposits. The High Plains aquifer is composed principally of unconsolidated alluvial deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age. These materials were deposited on an erosion surface that had been cut into consolidated rocks of Permian, Cretaceous and Jurassic age. Dissolution of underlying Permian evaporites by ground water has been a significant factor in the faulting and subsidence of the bedrock surface in southwestern and south-central Kansas. Maps published at a scale of 1:500,000 show the altitude and configuration of the base of the aquifer. The regional gradient of the base is from west to east at about 10 feet per mile, but the gradient of the base is from west to east at about 10 feet per mile, but the local gradient may exceed 100 feet per mile in the vicinity of faults, collapsed areas, and erosional features. The complexity and interrelation of the surface water/groundwater systems has already created management problems. As development continues and increases, the problems will increase in number and complexity. To aid in planning for future development, an accurate determination of drainage areas for all basins, sub-basins, and noncontributing areas in the Big Sioux River basin is needed. All named stream basins, and all unnamed basins > 10 sq mi within the Big Sioux River basin in South Dakota are shown and are listed by stream name. Stream drainage basins in South Dakota were delineated by visual interpretation of contour information shown on U.S. Geological Survey 77-1/2 minute topographic maps. One table lists the drainage areas of major drainage basins in the Big Sioux River basin that do not have a total drainage area value > 10 sq mi. The Janbal al Usayfir quadrangle, sheet 26/40 C, is located approximately 195 km southwest of the regional center of Ha’il, in the north-central part of Saudi Arabia, and is bounded by lat 26°00’ and 26°30’ N. and long 40°30’ and 40°30’ E. Access is via the Al Madinah – Ha’il paved highway to Hulayfah or Ghazzalah, thence by unimproved road to Zarghat, located a few km from the northeastern corner of the quadrangle. Desert tracks lead from Zarghat to the rest of the area, but a large expanse of the area is underlain by Tertiary to Recent Harrat Ithnayn, and is impassable to land vehicles.

The area has low relief, broken by low hills and mesas of Proterozoic and Paleozoic rock, basalt, cinder cones, and Jabal al Usayfir. Drainage in the quadrangle trends generally to the east and southeast, but rainfall is low. The climate is typical of inland Saudi Arabia, with summer day temperatures reaching 45-50°C, and with generally cool nights. Temperatures can reach 0°C in winter. Vegetation is sparse.

The area is sparsely populated, and permanent water is found only in wells.

This report, which was prepared in cooperation with the City of Houston and the Galveston Coastal Subsidence District, present data on water-level changes during 1977-85 and 1984-85 in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers (figs. 1-4) and data on measured compaction 1973-85 (fig. 5).

Water levels in about 500 wells were used to construct the maps showing water-level changes.  Compation data were obtained from 12 wells equipped with compaction monitors (fig. 6).

Maps were made of the distribution of individual species based on transect samples and a complete shoreline survey.
