Ground waters in each of these systems evolve from low dissolved-solids concentration, near-neutral pH, predominantly calcium and magnesium bicarbonate types in their recharge areas, to high dissolved-solids concentration, high pH, predominantly sodium-bicarbonate types in the basins. Oxidation potentials decrease as the waters flow downgradient under confined conditions. Calculation of the saturation states of aquifer minerals suggests several groups of mineral phases that could control ground-water chemistry. Mass transfer modeling indicates, however, that the observed behavior of major and minor dissolved species in both systems can satisfactorily be explained only by equilibration with calcite, dolomite, or calcite and dolomite. The geochemistry of these systems is probably controlled by the incongruent dissolution of dolomite to form calcite. This reaction appears to be driven by cation exchange and the dissolution of carbon dioxide. Plausible carbon dioxide sources include organic carbon oxidation and lignite coalification. Aluminosilicates influence major element chemistry primarily as subtrates for cation exchange, which, in combination with carbonate equilibria, buffer ground water pH at values of 8.5 to 8.9. Dissolved-iron concentrations are controlled by equilibration with amorphous ferric oxyhydroxides in oxidizing waters, with amorphous ferric oxyhydroxides and siderite in moderately reducing waters, and with siderite and amorphous ferrous sulfide in strongly reducing waters. Measured variations in dissolved carbonate isotopic composition compare favorably with carbon isotopic evolution, calculated by assuming dedolomitization.

Recharge areas of the two systems are characterized by ground waters with high tritium and carbon-14 activities and relatively low dissolved-solids concentrations, with calcium and magnesium as the predominant cations. Recharge temperatures, calculated from dissolved-argon concentrations and 5180 and SD isotopic measurements, indicate that recharge is derived primarily from spring snow-melt rather than late spring and summer storms. Ground-water flow directions are generally parallel to trends of increasing dissolved solids concentrations and decreasing divalent to monovalent cation concentration ratios. However, these trends are sometimes obscured in areas of leakage or mixing. Further indication of leakage between aquifers is provided by abrupt changes in major element and isotopic chemistry, which are not characteristic of normally observed geochemical evolution. Ground-water flow rates, calculated by adjusting measured carbon-14 activities for carbonate mass transfer, are comparable to values calculated from aquifer tests and potentiometric data. These carbon-14 flow rates average 1.6 meters per year for the Second Cat Creek sandstone of the Kootenai Formation, and 1.3 meters per year for the Lance-Fox Hills aquifer.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/pp1402C","usgsCitation":"Henderson, T., 1985, Geochemistry of ground-water in two sandstone aquifer systems in the Northern Great Plains in parts of Montana and Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1402, viii, 84 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1402C.","productDescription":"viii, 84 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":119587,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1402c/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":65151,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1402c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Northern Great Plains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.01562499999999,\n              40.91351257612758\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.15234375,\n              40.91351257612758\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.15234375,\n              48.80686346108517\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.01562499999999,\n              48.80686346108517\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.01562499999999,\n              40.91351257612758\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6aae76","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Henderson, Thomas","contributorId":86400,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henderson","given":"Thomas","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":219915,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The area is characterized by a series of generally north-trending mountain ranges separated by alluviumfilled basins that are partially filled with sedimentary deposits eroded from the adjacent mountains and lacustrine sediments deposited by Lake Bonneville. Most of the intermountain basins are elongated in the northward direction, but some are almost equidimensional.

This report was prepared as part of the Great Basin Regional AquiferSystem Analysis (RASA) program. The report is intended to make well data from the MX-missile siting study readily available to water-resource managers and the general public. It includes well data obtained in areas for which little or no such data have been published previously.

Well-drilling and well-completion data were compiled by Ertec, Inc. The verification jhase was designed to obtain information necessary for the design and construction of the MX-basing system. Numerous small diameter wells were bored with depths ranging from 92 to 205 feet. Two-inch diameter JVC casing with the bottom 20 feet perforated was installed in each borehole. The water-resources phase was designed to determine ground-water availibility and to estimate the effects of ground-water withdrawals required for the construction of the MX-basing system. Six large-diameter production test wells were drilled along with associated small-diameter observation wells. Depths ranged from 310 to 1,399 feet. Lithologic logs for selected production test wells or associated observation wells are listed in table 2. Geophysical logs and aquifer test data are available in the files of the U. S. The study, done in cooperation with the City of Bellevue, was part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's National Urban Runoff program. The objectives of the study were to (1) establish a consistent and accessible data base for typical urban watersheds; (2) determine the magnitude and frequency of storm-runoff loads of water-quality constituents from three catchments in the city; (3) develop methods for estimating storm and annual loads of water-quality constituents from unsampled catchments in the study area; and (4) test the effectiveness of storm-water-quality management alternatives, such as street sweeping and detention storage, for the attenuation of constituent loads carried in storm runoff. This report presents data collected during the study period. Data include rainfall and runoff amounts, physical characteristics of the catchments, the chemical quality of storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, constituent loads in storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, and storm characteristics data, such as rainfall and runoff volumes. Surface-water field data included one or more measurements of pH, water temperature, and specific conductance at 45 sites in and adjacent to the mine area. At nine of these sites, daily data on discharge, specific conductance, and water temperature were collected during parts of 1981-82 by using electronic monitor-recorder systems. Ground-water field data included one or more of the water-quality measurements listed above at 71 piezometers in the mine area. Borehole geophysical data included neutron-moisture, neutron-porosity, gamma-gamma density, natural gamma, and temperature logs at three sites. Mineralogic and hydrologic data were obtained for cores taken from nine test holes. One or more surface-water samples from 26 sites were analyzed for major cations, major anions, and a wide range of minor inorganic constituents. Single ground-water samples from 36 piezometers were analyzed for the same array of major and minor constituents. The site was selected for borehole geophysical research because it is included in a detailed groundwater study where the effects of flow in fractures on flow in overlying drift deposits is being studied. Three of the boreholes are approximately 100 meters in depth, and the fourth is approximately 230 meters in depth. All four boreholes were logged with caliper, acoustic, gamma, single-point-resistivity, and acoustic televiewer logs. Fracture sets dipping approximately 45 degrees to the east were detected in all four boreholes. Two sets of deeper fractures were detected near the bottom of the deepest borehole. Acoustic waveform logs were obtained in all boreholes using three different source frequencies, 34, 15, and 5 kilohertz, for future comparison with surface to borehole seismic data.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr85340","usgsCitation":"Paillet, F.L., 1985, Geophysical well log data for study of water flow in fractures near Mirror Lake, West Thornton, New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-340, vi, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85340.","productDescription":"vi, 27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394786,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75793.htm"},{"id":44252,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0340/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146456,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0340/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire","city":"West Thornton","otherGeospatial":"Mirror Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.69660568237305,\n              43.94110816034728\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.68905258178711,\n              43.94110816034728\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.68905258178711,\n              43.94679373516942\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.69660568237305,\n              43.94679373516942\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.69660568237305,\n              43.94110816034728\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b390","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Paillet, Frederick L.","contributorId":63820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paillet","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170954,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Calculated velocities for the time of maximum velocity in the tidal cycle ranged from 2.32 ft/sec near the bottom to 4.65 ft/sec near the surface of the sound in a cross section in the vicinity of a proposed wastewater outfall. Vertical velocity distributions calculated for the time of maximum velocity were similar at all stations at which velocities were measured except the station in shallow water near the shore. A recent bathymetric chart of the vicinity of the proposed outfall indicates that a bar extends farther along the northern shore of Hilton Head Island than indicated on earlier nautical charts of Port Royal Sound. Continued extension of this bar could alter the impact on water quality from discharge of treated wastewater into the sound. Further study may be needed to monitor changes in the bar if the outfall is located between the bar and Hilton Head Island. Conservative calculations based on the results of the dye tracer study indicate that the discharge of 10.9 million gallons/day of wastewater having concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids of 15 mg/L will result in a maximum cumulative increase in concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand of < 0.01 mg/L and no increase in concentrations of suspended solids at high slack tide in the part of Port Royal Sound most affected by the proposed wastewater discharge. On the basis of material properties, groundwater levels, and seismic history of the blockage, slope stability with and without earthquake-induced forces was determined. Results indicated that the blockage will not fail from gravitational forces at September 1983 groundwater levels. An increase of 25 feet or more in water levels could cause local failures, but massive failure of the blockage is improbable. Blockage slopes are potentially unstable for present and higher water levels if an earthquake with magnitude greater than 6.0 should occur. Retrogressive slope failures are possible, but lowering of the blockage crest below lake level and consequent lake breakout are considered remote. Significant earthquake shaking could cause cracks in the blockage that might facilitate piping.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1345","usgsCitation":"Meyer, W., Sabol, M.A., Glicken, H., and Voight, B., 1985, The effects of ground water, slope stability, and seismic hazard on the stability of the South Fork Castle Creek blockage in the Mount St. Helens area, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1345, iv, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1345.","productDescription":"iv, 42 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408049,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74275.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":65253,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1345/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":122524,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1345/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Mount St. Helens area, South Fork Castle Creek blockage","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -122.2861,\n 46.2569\n ],\n [\n -122.2736,\n 46.2569\n ],\n [\n -122.2736,\n 46.2667\n ],\n [\n -122.2861,\n 46.2667\n ],\n [\n -122.2861,\n 46.2569\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65def4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meyer, William","contributorId":87538,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meyer","given":"William","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":219978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sabol, M. The Bi-City WWTP is operated by the Cities of Littleton and Englewood. The model was calibrated from a 14.5 mile reach for 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, organic, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate using data collected during September 1983. Model verification was completed using data collected during October 1982 and January 1984 for all constituents except nitrite nitrogen. Nitrite nitrogen could not be verified for the cold temperature conditions of January of 1984. Measured benthic sediment oxygen demand used in model ranged from 1.01 to 2.77 grams per square meter per day. Model simulations were made for an estimated 7-day, 10-year discharge of 18 cubic feet per second, upstream from the outfall of the WWTP. Two groups of simulations were made for both warm and cold temperature conditions. In the first group of simulation variations were made in effluent 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand concentrations and flow rates. The second group of simulations varied the amount of nitrogen discharged as ammonia and nitrate. The extent of the mixing zone downstream of the WWTP outfall was determined by injecting Rhodamine WT dye into the effluent. The mixing zone was found to extend 0.8 miles during low-flow conditions. Washing polyethylene with acetone, hexane, methanol, or nitric acid can change the adsorptive characteristics of the polyethylene. In this study, simulated precipitation at pH 4.5 was in contact with the polyethylene sacks for 21 days; subsamples were removed for chemical analysis at 7, 14, and 21 days after intitial contact. Sacks washed with acetone adsorbed iron and lithium; sacks washed with hexane adsorbed barium, iron , and lithium; sacks washed with methanol adsorbed calcium and iron; and sacks washed with 0.30 N nitric acid adsorbed iron. Leaching the plastic sacks with 0.15 N nitric acid did not result in 100-percent recovery of any of the adsorbed metals. Washing polyethylene sacks with dilute nitric acid caused the pH of the simulated precipitation to be decreased by 0.2 pH unit after 1 week of contact with the polyethylene. The specific conductance increased by 10 microsiemens per centimeter. Contamination of precipitation samples by lead was determined to be about 0.1 microgram per liter from contact with precleaned polyethylene sacks. Associated with the increase in mining activities is a greater need to know the effects of mining activities on the water quantity and quality of near-surface aquifers. The near-surface lignite beds mined at the Big Brown Lignite Mine are from the Calvert Bluff Formation of the Wilcox Group of Eocene age, which is a minor aquifer generally having water suitable for all uses, in eastern Freestone County, Texas. One of the potential hydro!ogic effects of surface-coal mining is a change in the quality of ground water associated with replacement of aquifer materials by mine spoils. The purpose of this report is to compile and categorize geologic, mineralogic, geochemical, and hydrologic data for the Big Brown Lignite Mine and surrounding area in east-central Texas. Included are results of pasteextract analyses, constituent concentrations in water from batch-mixing experiments, sulfur analyses, and minerals or mineral groups detected by X-ray diffraction in 12 spoil material samples collected from 3 locations at the mine site. Also, common-constituent and trace-constituent concentrations in water from eight selected wells, located updip and downdip from the mine, are presented. Dissolved-solids concentrations in water from batch-mixing experiments vary from 12 to 908 milligrams per liter. Water from selected wells contain dissolved-solids concentrations ranging from 75 to 510 milligrams per liter.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr85338","usgsCitation":"Dorsey, M.E., 1985, Hydrologic and geochemical data for the Big Brown lignite mine area, Freestone County, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-338, Report: iv, 17 p.; 2 Plates: 23.17 x 17.62 inches and 23.92 x 17.92 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85338.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 17 p.; 2 Plates: 23.17 x 17.62 inches and 23.92 x 17.92 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":41818,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0338/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41819,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0338/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41820,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0338/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145440,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0338/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4de4b07f02db62757e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dorsey, Michael E.","contributorId":101739,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dorsey","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167734,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The major water issues in the State concern the management of these water resources in regard to their availability areally across the State and temporally over the changing seasons and cycles of weather. Management also concerns the protection of the supply of water from deterioration through contamination. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Nebraska began providing data to allow for better management of the State 's water near the end of the 19th Century. Since then the USGS activities have continued and have included the monitoring of hydrologic conditions, detailed studies to describe the hydrology of specific areas, and studies to add to the basic scientific knowledge of hydrology. Projects in all these areas continue.
