Historic water-quality data collected between 1975 and 1983 were complied and analyzed in terms of eight selected mine-drainage characteristics to develop a data base for individual subbasin reclamation projects. Areas of mine drainage affecting Raccoon Creek basin, the study Sandy Run basin, the Hewett Fork basin, and the Little raccoon Creek basin.\r\n\r\nSurface-water-quality samples were collected from a 41-site network from November 1 through November 3, 1983, Results of the sampling reaffirmed that the major sources of mine drainage to Raccoon Creek are in the Little Raccoon Creek basin, and the Hewett Fork basin. However, water quality at the mouth of Sandy Run indicated that it is not a source of mine drainage to Raccoon Creek.\r\n\r\nBuffer Run, Goose Run, an unnamed tributary to Little Raccoon Creek, Mulga Run, and Sugar Run were the main sources of mine drainage sampled in the Little Raccoon Creek basin. All sites sampled in the East Branch Raccoon Creek basin were affected by mine drainage.\r\n\r\nThis information was used to prepare a work plan for additional data collection before, during, and after reclamation. Descriptions of the physiographic and geologic conditions, climate, and vegetation patterns for the study area are included. Allowable limits of certain chemical constituents in water for human and livestock consumption are included with the water quality data. Three classifications of springs were established based on physical characteristics of the springs, and chemical composition of the springflow: (1) mountain springs; (2) non-thermal valley springs, and (3) thermal valley springs. Mountain springs are in and near recharge areas, have seasonal variations of discharge and temperature, typically discharge from extrusive and metamorphic geohydrologic units, and generally discharge freshwater. Non-thermal valley springs are peripheral to recharge areas, have seasonal variations of discharge and temperature, typically discharge from a variety of geohydrologic units, and have variable water composition. Thermal valley springs are near topographic low areas of valleys , and have little seasonal variation of discharge or temperature. They typically discharge from unconsolidated deposits (but the discharge probably has flowed through buried carbonate geohydrologic units). They also have a considerable range of water composition that reflects the relative complexity of the groundwater system. Ground waters in each of these </span><span>systems evolve from low dissolved-solids concentration, near-neutral </span><span>pH, predominantly calcium and magnesium bicarbonate types in </span><span>their recharge areas, to high dissolved-solids concentration, high pH, </span><span>predominantly sodium-bicarbonate types in the basins. Oxidation </span><span>potentials decrease as the waters flow downgradient under confined </span><span>conditions. Calculation of the saturation states of aquifer minerals </span><span>suggests several groups of mineral phases that could control ground-</span><span>water chemistry. Mass transfer modeling indicates, however, that the </span><span>observed behavior of major and minor dissolved species in both </span><span>systems can satisfactorily be explained only by equilibration with cal</span><span>cite, dolomite, or calcite and dolomite. The geochemistry of these </span><span>systems is probably controlled by the incongruent dissolution of dolo</span><span>mite to form calcite. This reaction appears to be driven by cation ex</span><span>change and the dissolution of carbon dioxide. Plausible carbon diox</span><span>ide sources include organic carbon oxidation and lignite coalification. </span><span>Aluminosilicates influence major element chemistry primarily as sub</span><span>trates for cation exchange, which, in combination with carbonate </span><span>equilibria, buffer ground water pH at values of 8.5 to 8.9. Dissolved-</span><span>iron concentrations are controlled by equilibration with amorphous </span><span>ferric oxyhydroxides in oxidizing waters, with amorphous ferric </span><span>oxyhydroxides and siderite in moderately reducing waters, and with </span><span>siderite and amorphous ferrous sulfide in strongly reducing waters. </span><span>Measured variations in dissolved carbonate isotopic composition </span><span>compare favorably with carbon isotopic evolution, calculated by </span><span>assuming dedolomitization. </span></p><p><span>Recharge areas of the two systems are characterized by ground </span><span>waters with high tritium and carbon-14 activities and relatively low </span><span>dissolved-solids concentrations, with calcium and magnesium as the </span><span>predominant cations. Recharge temperatures, calculated from </span><span>dissolved-argon concentrations and 5</span><span>18</span><span>0 and SD isotopic measure</span><span>ments, indicate that recharge is derived primarily from spring snow-</span><span>melt rather than late spring and summer storms. Ground-water flow </span><span>directions are generally parallel to trends of increasing dissolved </span><span>solids concentrations and decreasing divalent to monovalent cation </span><span>concentration ratios. However, these trends are sometimes obscured </span><span>in areas of leakage or mixing. Further indication of leakage between </span><span>aquifers is provided by abrupt changes in major element and isotopic </span><span>chemistry, which are not characteristic of normally observed geo</span><span>chemical evolution. Ground-water flow rates, calculated by adjusting </span><span>measured carbon-14 activities for carbonate mass transfer, are com</span><span>parable to values calculated from aquifer tests and potentiometric </span><span>data. These sites include a U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Bench-Mark site, Falling Creek near Juliette, and four periodic water-quality monitoring sites. Comparison of raw data trends with streamflow-residual trends and, where applicable, with chemical-discharge trends (instantaneous fluxes) shws that some of these trends are responses to factors other than changing streamflow. Percentages of forested, agricultural, and urban cover with each basin did not change much during the periods of water-quality record, and therefore these non-flow-related trends are not obviously related to changes in land cover or land use. Flow-residual water-quality trends at the Hydrologic Bench-Mark site and at the Chattooga River site probably indicate basin reponses to changes in the chemical quality of atmospheric deposition. These two basins are predominantly forested and have received little recent human use. Observed trends at the other three sites probably indicate basin responses to various land uses and water uses associated with agricultural and urban land or to changes in specific uses. Program objectives have been to provide a means for participating anaytical laboratories to: (1) Identify analytical problems, (2) ascertain the accuracy and precision of common water analyses and analytical methods, and (3) obtain reference samples for continuing quality-assurance testing. Participation in this continuing quality-assurance program is mandatory for all domestic laboratories providing water-analysis data for Survey use and storage in the WATSTORE data-storage system, if appropriate standard-reference water samples are available. The program was expanded in October 1982 to include laboratories in other countries. This report presents analytical data submitted by the 53 laboratories in other countries that analyzed the standard-reference water samples distributed in October 1983. Statistical evaluation of the data and performance ratings achieved by the laboratories for each determination are given in nine tables. Comparisons of the most probable values for the constituents determined by both other countries and domestic laboratories also are presented. The remaining 210 wells not previously measured and required complete inventorying. The report consists of maps of the study area and locations of the observation wells. An appendix of pertinent well data includes: legal location, land-surface altitude, depth-to-water, water-table altitude, date of measurement, and type of well. For most agricultural uses, the water in the Big Sioux aquifer is of acceptable quality. However, in some locations, the ground water is either marginally acceptable or unfit for human use. The fact that samples taken from observation wells located by rooads away from houses and barnyards show lower concentrations of nitrate (geometric means of 0.4 and up to 22 milligrams per liter as N) indicates that the source of nitrate pollution is probably localized and due to barnyard wastes. A monitoring network is proposed consisting of at least: (1) Three wells adjacent to domestic wells, (2) three wells about 1,000 feet away and down the potentiometric gradient from domestic wells, and (3) three wells at least 3,000 feet from any source of pollution. This monitoring network would provide information on changes in both localized nitrate pollution and other selected water-quality parameters. This aquifer occurs throughout Tennessee, west of the Valley and Ridge province. The Knox crops out in the Sequatchie Valley and in the Wells Creeks cryptoexplosive structure on the Northwestern Highland Rim. Groundwater in the upper Knox occurs primarily in solution openings. The aquifer may be recharged through fractures and faults in the overlying Ordovician limestones in Middle Tennessee. The underlying Conasauga Shale acts as the lower confining layer. Throughout parts of the Central Basin province, the Knox aquifer is an important source of water for rural domestic supplies. In these areas, groundwater from the Knox generally has less than 1,000 milligrams/L dissolved solids. Away from the Central Basin, the dissolved solids concentrations increases. Channel and aquifer characteristics, and the model control parameters, were estimated from available data and then verified to the extent possible by comparing model simulated streamflow to observed streamflow at streamflow gaging stations. Transit losses and traveltimes for varying reservoir release rates and durations then were simulated for two different antecedent streamflow (drought) conditions. For the severe-drought antecedent-streamflow condition, it was assumed that only the downstream water use requirement would be released from the reservoir. For a less severe drought (LSD) antecedent streamflow condition, it was assumed than any releases from Marion Lake for water supply use downstream, would be in addition to a nominal dry weather release of 5 cu ft/sec. Water supply release rates of 10 and 25 cu ft/sec for the severe drought condition and 5, 10, and 25 cu ft/sec for the less severe drought condition were simulated for periods of 28 and 183 days commencing on July 1. Transit losses for the severe drought condition for all reservoir release rates and durations ranged from 12% to 78% of the maximum downstream flow rate and from 27% to 91% of the total volume of reservoir storage released. For the LSD condition, transit losses ranged from 7% to 29% of the maximum downstream flow rate and from 10% to 48% of the total volume of release. The 183-day releases had larger total transit losses, but losses on a percentage basis were less than the losses for the 28-day release period for both antecedent streamflow conditions. Traveltimes to full response (80% of the maximum downstream flow rate), however, showed considerable variation. For the release of 5 cu ft/sec during LSD conditions, base flow exceeded 80% of the maximum flow rate near the confluence; the traveltime to full response was undefined for those simulations. For the releases of 10 and 25 cu ft/sec during the same drought condition, traveltimes to full response ranged from 4.4 to 6.5 days.
