Significant loss of life and property during eruptions, and extensive media coverage of\nvolcanic events around the globe have brought volcanic processes and hazards increasingly to the\nforefront of scientific, governmental, and public attention (e.g., Casadevall, 1994; Pringle, 1994).
\n
\n
A result of these circumstances has been an increasing number of scientific and popular\npublications dealing with active volcanism. The purpose of this bibliography is to provide a\ncomprehensive source of literature published between 1990 and 1997 relevant to all of the\nHolocene and fumarolic Pleistocene volcanoes in Alaska, the conterminous United States, and\nCanada. The period between 1990 and 1997 was chosen for two reasons. First, it was necessary\nto define a precise period of time to keep the work tractable. Second, research for this project\nbegan during the summer of 1996 and lasted through 1998, with minor additions into 1999. \nThus, 1997 was chosen as the younger cut-off and 1990 for the older cut-off. Literature\npertaining to Hawaiian volcanoes has been assembled into a database maintained by the\nHawaiian Volcano Observatory (Wright and Takahashi, 1984; Wright and Takahashi, 1998) and\nhas been excluded from this work.
\n
\n
We hope that this work will be useful in three ways. First, researchers interested in a\nspecific volcano can use the search capability of the electronic version to readily find literature\nrelevant to their work or determine what aspects of the volcano are in need of study. Second,\nreferences cited within the included references are guides to older literature. Third, during times\nof volcanic crisis this reference list can save time for responding scientists.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr0017","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Harpel, C.J., and Ewert, J.W., 2000, Bibliography of literature from 1990-1997 pertaining to Holocene and fumarolic Pleistocene volcanoes of Alaska, Canada, and the conterminous United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-17, Report: 500 p.; Database: EndNote© file, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0017.","productDescription":"Report: 500 p.; Database: EndNote© file","numberOfPages":"500","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":157,"text":"Cascades Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155802,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1414,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0017/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":280615,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0017/pdf/of00-017.pdf"},{"id":280616,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0017/of00-017.enl"}],"country":"Canada;United States","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 173.0,24.5 ], [ 173.0,83.3 ], [ -52.3,83.3 ], [ -52.3,24.5 ], [ 173.0,24.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ee4b07f02db628043","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harpel, Christopher J. 0000-0001-8587-7845 charpel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8587-7845","contributorId":4457,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harpel","given":"Christopher","email":"charpel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189847,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ewert, John W. 0000-0003-2819-4057 jwewert@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2819-4057","contributorId":642,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ewert","given":"John","email":"jwewert@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189846,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Many of these maps now need to be updated to reflect the construction of new roads and highways and other changes that have taken place over time. The USGS has formulated a graphic revision plan to help keep the primary series maps current.\r\n\r\nPrimary series maps include 1:20,000-scale quadrangles of Puerto Rico, 1:24,000- or 1:25,000-scale quadrangles of the conterminous United States, Hawaii, and U.S. Territories, and 1:63,360-scale quadrangles of Alaska.\r\n\r\nThe revision of primary series maps from new collection sources is accomplished using a variety of processes. The raster revision process combines the scanned content of paper maps with raster updating technologies. The vector revision process involves the automated plotting of updated vector files. Traditional processes use analog stereoplotters and manual scribing instruments on specially coated map separates. The ability to select from or combine these processes increases the efficiency of the National Mapping Division map revision program.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs04700","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 2000, Revision of Primary Series Maps: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 047-00, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs04700.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":122368,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0047/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31865,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0047/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db611d07","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528412,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Government Hill and Turnagain Heights landslides occurred in similar stratigraphic and geographic settings, yet the style of ground deformation is different at each site. GPR data are compared with previous investigations and are shown, under certain conditions, to have utility in the identification of ancient landslides. Reflection surveys accurately reproduced the subsurface geometry of horst and graben structures and imaged finer scale features such as ground cracks and fissures. Where more complete disintegration of the bluff occurred, GPR reflections from within the slide mass are generally chaotic and include no recognizable evidence of the original stratigraphy. The series presents new and sometimes preliminary findings that are of interest to earth scientists in academia, government, and industry; to land and resource managers; and to the general public. Reports presented in Geologic Studies in Alaska cover a broad spectrum of topics from all parts of the State (fig. 1), which serves to emphasize the diversity of USGS efforts to meet the Nation's needs for earth-science information in Alaska.

The papers in this volume are organized under the topics Resources, Geologic Framework, and Environment and Climate. Such an organization is intended to reflect the scope and objectives of USGS programs currently active in Alaska. Resource papers include one that presents detailed observations from a Mississippian Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag occurrence in the Brooks Range (Werdon). Mineralogic, chemical, and isotopic data provide the basis for a proposed relationship between this vein-breccia deposit and the shale-hosted massive sulfide deposit type, which includes the active Red Dog mine in the western Brooks Range. Also included under the topic of Resources is a paper that presents geochemical and isotopic data from the Greens Creek and Woewodski Island volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in southeastern Alaska (Newberry and Brew). The depositional environment and sedimentological setting of Tertiary coal beds in the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys is the focus of a third paper under the topic of Resources (Flores and others).

Geologic Framework studies provide background information that is the scientific basis for present and future studies of the environment, mineral and energy resources, paleoclimate, and hazards in Alaska. One paper presents the results of sedimentologic and paleontologic comparisons of lower Paleozoic, deep-water-facies rock units in central Alaska (Dumoulin and others). The authors show which of these units are likely to correlate with one another, suggest likely source regions, and provide a structural restoration of units that have been fragmented by large fault motions. A second framework paper provides a map, rock descriptions, and chemical compositions of volcanic rocks in a newly recognized, geologically young volcanic center in the Aleutian volcanic arc (Hildreth and others). A third paper presents an interesting summary of gravity changes that occurred in south-central Alaska during the great earthquake of 1964 and for the following 25 years (Barnes). Gravity changes correlate with land-elevation changes in some cases, but not in others, which means that different processes are responsible for the gravity changes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1614","usgsCitation":"2000, Geologic studies in Alaska by the U.S. Geological Survey, 1997: U.S. Geological These data represent analyses of stream-sediment, heavy-mineral-concentrate (derived from stream sediment), soil, and organic material samples. Most of the data comes from mineral resource investigations conducted in the Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program (AMRAP). However, some of the data were produced in support of other USGS programs. The data were originally entered into the in-house Rock Analysis Storage System (RASS) database. The RASS database, which contains over 580,000 data records, was used by the Geologic Division from the early 1970's through the late 1980's to archive geochemical data. Much of the data have been previously published in paper copy USGS Open-File Reports by the submitter or the analyst but some of the data have never been published. \r\nOver the years, USGS scientists recognized several problems with the database. The two primary issues were location coordinates (either incorrect or lacking) and sample media (not precisely identified). This dataset represents a re-processing of the original RASS data to make the data accessible in digital format and more user friendly. This re-processing consisted of checking the information on sample media and location against the original sample submittal forms, the original analytical reports, and published reports. As necessary, fields were added to the original data to more fully describe the sample preparation methods used and sample medium analyzed. The actual analytical data were not checked in great detail, but obvious errors were corrected.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological NASQAN was established in 1973. Water-quality data currently is collected at NASQAN sites on bimonthly and quarterly intervals. This basin is very important to the economy of the State of Alaska because it is home to more than half of the population and it supports multi-million dollar commercial, subsistence and sport fisheries. Hence an understanding of how glacial runoff influences biological productivity is important for managing rivers that drain into Cook Inlet. This paper examines the ways in which the regulation of glacier-fed rivers by proglacial lakes affects salmon productivity, with particular reference to the Kenai River. Salmon escapement per unit channel length on the Kenai River is between two and ten times that found for rain-and-snowmelt dominated rivers and glacier-fed rivers lacking lake regulation. Lakes are shown to influence biological processes in glacier-fed rivers by attenuating peak flows, sustaining high flows throughout the summer, supplementing winter low flows, settling suspended sediment, and increasing river temperatures. Downstream from large lakes, glacier-fed rivers are less disturbed, channels are relatively stable and have well-developed salmonid habitats. The positive influences are indicated by the high diversity and abundances of benthic macroinvertebrates, which are important food resources for juvenile salmonids. High summer flows allow access for up-river salmon runs and lakes also provide both overwintering and rearing habitat. Prey in declining order of importance were small mammals (95% tundra voles, Microtus oeconomus), birds, marine mammals, and fishes. Foxes with small mammal remains in their stomachs were captured farther from the Bering Sea coast (X̄ = 5.2 km) than those without small-mammal remains (2.8 km); foxes consuming remains of marine mammals were closer to the coast (1.9 km) than others (4.9 km). Although eggshells had a poor likelihood of occurrence in stomachs, they were found in all months and years. In 1986 and 1987, foxes consumed fewer small mammals than in other years. Mean ages of foxes captured in 1986 (3.7 years) and 1987 (3.2) were greater than in all other years (1.5). Capture of adults was more common as winter progressed. Indexes of subcutaneous fat decreased annually in April–May and were highest in 1991, when occurrence of carrion of marine mammals was highest.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1644/1545-1542(2000)081<0820:FOAFAL>2.3.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Anthony, M., Barten, N., and Seiser, P., 2000, Foods of arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) during winter and spring in western Alaska: Journal of Mammalogy, v. 81, no. 3, p. 820-828, https://doi.org/10.1644/1545-1542(2000)081<0820:FOAFAL>2.3.CO;2.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"820","endPage":"828","costCenters":[{"id":106,"text":"Alaska Biological Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":479256,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1644/1545-1542(2000)081<0820:foafal>2.3.co;2","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":134437,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -165.7342529296875,\n              62.08845808493408\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.8331298828125,\n              61.96994329935749\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.6903076171875,\n              61.8665112570728\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.1737060546875,\n              61.82763395319926\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.97595214843747,\n              61.66902436927201\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.22314453125,\n              61.65598732543086\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.2176513671875,\n              61.54625879879804\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.0968017578125,\n              61.462394960037244\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.97595214843747,\n              61.530551549680816\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.816650390625,\n              61.478136657279336\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.014404296875,\n              61.4361411140723\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.9320068359375,\n              61.29926430596724\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.6903076171875,\n              61.26495144723964\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.6298828125,\n              61.079544234557304\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.322265625,\n              61.04765058603108\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.30029296875,\n              61.119366155705585\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.146484375,\n              61.03169171684717\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.2288818359375,\n              60.973107109199404\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.1080322265625,\n              60.88770004207789\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.9652099609375,\n              60.919754532399686\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.89929199218747,\n              60.92776312080081\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.8443603515625,\n              60.879681383571096\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.6246337890625,\n              60.92242428555193\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.5697021484375,\n              60.847586595361314\n            ],\n            [\n              -164.674072265625,\n              62.09617128406539\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.7342529296875,\n              62.08845808493408\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"81","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5de4eb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anthony, M.","contributorId":41373,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anthony","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":318653,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barten, N.K.","contributorId":99526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barten","given":"N.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":318655,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Seiser, P.E.","contributorId":96649,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seiser","given":"P.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":318654,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was a major perturbation to nonbreeding habitats of harlequin ducks in Prince William Sound, Alaska, which resulted in population injury. To assess the status of population recovery from the oil spill and to evaluate factors potentially constraining full recovery, we used radiotelemetry to examine survival of adult female harlequin ducks during winters of 1995-96, 1996-97, and 1997-98. We implanted 294 harlequin ducks (154 and 140 in oiled and unoiled areas, respectively) with transmitters and tracked their signals from aircraft during October through March. We examined variation in survival rates relative to area and season (early, mid, and late winter) through comparisons of models using Akaike's information criterion (AIC(c)) values. The 3 models best supported by the data indicated that survival of birds in oiled areas was lower than in unoiled areas. Inclusion of standardized body mass during wing molt in the 3 best models did not improve their fit, indicating that body mass during wing molt did not affect subsequent winter survival. In the model that best fit our data, survival was high in early winter for both areas, lower during mid and late winter seasons, and lowest in oiled areas during mid winter. Cumulative winter survival estimated from this model was 78.0% (SE = 3.3%) in oiled areas and 83.7% (SE = 2.9%) in unoiled areas. We determined that area differences in survival were more likely related to oiling history than intrinsic geographic differences. Based on a demographic model, area differences in survival offer a likely mechanism for observed declines in populations on oiled areas. Concurrent studies indicated that harlequin ducks continued to be exposed to residual Exxon Valdez oil as much as 9 years after the spill. We suggest that oil exposure, mortality, and population dynamics were linked and conclude that continued effects of the oil spill likely restricted recovery of harlequin duck populations through at least 1998.
","language":"English","publisher":"The Wildlife Society","doi":"10.2307/3802754","issn":"0022541X","usgsCitation":"Esler, D., Schmutz, J.A., Jarvis, R.L., and Mulcahy, D., 2000, Winter survival of adult female harlequin ducks in relation to history of contamination by the Exxon Valdez oil spill: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 64, no. 3, p. 839-847, https://doi.org/10.2307/3802754.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"839","endPage":"847","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":233412,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Prince William Sound","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -148.63677978515622,\n              60.105932794980426\n            ],\n            [\n              -146.71142578125,\n              60.105932794980426\n            ],\n            [\n              -146.71142578125,\n              60.764525674175374\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.63677978515622,\n              60.764525674175374\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.63677978515622,\n              60.105932794980426\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bd15ee4b08c986b32f3b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Esler, Daniel 0000-0001-5501-4555 desler@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5501-4555","contributorId":5465,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Esler","given":"Daniel","email":"desler@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":12437,"text":"Simon Fraser University, Centre for Wildlife Ecology","active":true,"usgs":false},{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":394391,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schmutz, Joel A. 0000-0002-6516-0836 jschmutz@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6516-0836","contributorId":1805,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmutz","given":"Joel","email":"jschmutz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":117,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology WTEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":394392,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Jarvis, R.
