The occurrence and configuration of 15 regional hydrogeologic units are defined based primarily on the interpretation of borehole geophysical data. The nine aquifers and six confining beds are composed of unconsolidated clay, silt, sand, and gravel and range in age from Cretaceous to Quaternary. </p><p>Electric and gamma-ray logs from more than 1,000 Coastal Plain wells were examined. Of these, interpretive data for 302 sites, selected for log depth, quality, and distribution, were used to prepare structure contour and thickness maps for each aquifer, and a thickness map for each confining bed. These maps, along with 14 hydrogeologic sections, show the geometry, lateral extent, and vertical and horizontal relationships among the 15 hydrogeologic units. </p><p><span>The hydrogeologic maps and sections show that distinct </span><span>lower, middle, and upper aquifers are present within the Potomac-</span><span>Raritan-Magothy aquifer system near the Delaware River from </span><span>Burlington County to Salem County. Although the lower aquifer is </span><span>recognized only in this area, the middle aquifer extends into the </span><span>northeastern Coastal Plain of New Jersey where it is stratigraph</span><span>ically equivalent to the Farrington aquifer. The upper aquifer </span><span>extends throughout most of the New Jersey Coastal Plain and is </span><span>stratigraphically equivalent to the Old Bridge aquifer in the </span><span>northeastern Coastal Plain. The overlying Merchantville-Woodbury </span><span>confining bed is the most regionally extensive confining bed </span><span>within the Coastal Plain of New Jersey. Its thickness ranges from </span><span>less than 100 feet near the outcrop to more than 450 feet along </span><span>the coast. </span><span>The Englishtown aquifer system acts as a single aquifer throughout most of its subsurface extent, but contains two water-bearing sands in parts of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The overlying Marshalltown-Wenonah confining bed is a thin, leaky unit ranging in thickness from approximately 20 to 80 feet. The Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer is identified in the subsurface throughout the New Jersey Coastal Plain southeast of its outcrop area. </span></p><p><span>Sediments that overlie the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer and </span><span>that are subjacent to the major aquifers within the Kirkwood </span><span>Formation and Cohansey Sand are described hydrologically as a </span><span>composite confining bed. </span><span>These include the Navesink Formation, </span><span>Red Bank Sand, Tinton Sand, Hornerstown Sand, Vincentown Forma-</span><span>tion, Manasquan Formation, Shark River Formation, Piney Point </span><span>Formation, and the basal clay of the Kirkwood Formation. </span><span>The </span><span>Vincentown Formation functions as an aquifer within 3 to 10 miles </span><span>downdip of its outcrop area. </span><span>In areas farther downdip the </span><span>Vincentown Formation functions as a confining bed. The Piney </span><span>Point aquifer is laterally persistent from the southern New Jersey </span><span>Coastal Plain northward into parts of Burlington and Ocean </span><span>Counties. The Atlantic City 800-foot sand of the Kirkwood </span><span>Formation can be recognized in the subsurface along coastal areas </span><span>of Cape May, Atlantic, and southern Ocean Counties, but inland </span><span>only as far west as the extent of the overlying confining bed. In </span><span>areas west of the extent of the overlying confining bed, the </span><span>Kirkwood Formation is in hydraulic connection with the overlying </span><span>Cohansey Sand and younger One of the sites being studied by the USGS under this program is a plume of sewage contaminated groundwater on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The plume was formed by land disposal of treated sewage to a glacial outwash aquifer since 1936. This report summarizes results obtained during the first year of research at the Cape Cod s under the USGS Toxic-Waste Ground-Water Contamination Program. The seven papers included in this volume were presented at the Toxic Waste Technical Meeting, Tucson, Arizona, in March 1984. They provide an integrated view of the subsurface distribution of contaminants based on the first year of research and discuss hypotheses concerning the transport processes that affect the movement of contaminants in the plume. These stations are supported by 18 different funding sources at a budget for the 1984 water year of $1,065,000. The streamflow-gaging program in Montana has evolved through the years as Federal, State, and local needs for surface-water data have increased. Continuous streamflow records for periods ranging from less than 1 year to more than 90 years have been collected. This report describes phase 1 of a cost-effectiveness study of the streamflow-gaging program in Montana. Evaluation of the program indicates that numerous agencies use the data for studies involving regional hydrology, hydrologic systems, and planning and design. They also use the data for operations of existing hydroelectric and irrigation dams, forecasting flood and seasonal flows, water-quality monitoring, research studies for fish habitat, and other uses such as recreational management. These precipitation networks set quality-control goals for site-operator measurements of pH and specific conductance. The accuracy goal for pH is plus or minus 0.1 pH unit; the accuracy goal for specific conductance is plus or minus 4 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius. These intercomparison studies indicated that an average of 65 percent of the site-operator pH measurements and 79 percent of the site-operator specific-conductance measurements met the quality-control goal. A statistical approach that is resistant to outliers was used to evaluate and illustrate the results obtained from these intercomparisons.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Ground-water levels have declined in some areas in recent years as a result of heavy irrigation pumpage from this aquifer. Near the areas of principal recharge, along the major rivers, and near the Bluff Hills, ground-water levels appear to be relatively unaffected by the large aquifer drafts; whereas away from the areas of recharge, in the interior of the basin, ground-water levels have shown a long-term decline. Paleozoic rocks in the area consist mostly of beds of sandstone, shale, and limestone which dip about 30 feet per mile to the southwest. The potentiometric surface of the Paleozoic aquifer slopes generally to the west away from the area of outcrop and is strongly affected by large groundwater withdrawals at Corinth. The water level at Corinth has declined about 160 feet from 1954 to 1974 and recovered about 45 feet by 1982. Maps show that depths from land surface to Upper Permian rocks range from 0 at the outcrop to over 2,100 feet, depths to Upper Jurassic rocks ran from 0 at the outcrop to about 2,000 feet, depths to the Cheyenne Sandstone range from about 150 to about 1 ,950 feet, and depths to the Dakota Formation range from 0 at the outcrop to about 1,650 feet. The north-central part of the city of Tampa is highly urbanized; the north-west part of the area is rural or undeveloped. The area has numerous sinkholes, two of which are used as retention basins for urban storm runoff. An intermittent stream discharges into a sinkhole that is hydraulically connected with the Floridian aquifer. A well-developed cavity system occurs in the upper part of the aquifer in the southwestern and southeastern parts of the area. Groundwater velocities of 4,200 to 9,200 feet per day were determined from dye tests conducted in a sinkhole area north of Sulfur Springs. Sulfur Springs provides the city of Tampa a supplemental water supply of 20 million gallons per day. Periodically, the spring pool is closed to swimming because of the high bacteria counts in the water. The source of bacteria appears to be an internally drained sinkhole area north of the spring. In 1980, groundwater use in the study area, excluding withdrawals from Sulphur Springs, was 7.2 million gallons per day, largely for public water supplies. The city of Tampa pumped an average of 48.5 million gallons per day from the Tampa Dam Reservoir on the Hillsborough River. The model simulates, in cross section, the sedimentary wedge from the Delaware River estuary in New Jersey to the Continental Slope. Simulated steady-state freshwater flow is separated from static saltwater by a sharp interface. The model was used to test the sensitivity of the simulated interface position to anisotropy as well as to sea-level elevation. Increasing anisotropy causes the interface to be shallower and extend farther offshore. Lowering sea level causes the interface to be deeper and to extend farther offshore. Simulations using hydraulic conductivities based on available data suggest that the transition zone is not in equilibrium with present sea level. The position of the transition zone probably reflects a long-term average sea level of between 50 and 100 ft below present sea level. The cyclic movement of salty ground water in response to sea-level fluctuations during the Quaternary and Late Tertiary caused the saltwater to mix with freshwater, thus producing a broad transition zone. The freshwater is predominantly sodium bicarbonate in character. The saltwater, from New Jersey to Virginia, probably is a sodium calcium chloride brine. High-flow information given in this report is for streamflows unaffected by major regulation, such as by large reservoirs. High-flow magnitude and frequency data are given for 91 streamflow-gaging stations through-out Kansas. Results of frequency calculations are given for durations of high flow of 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 183 consecutive days. Accuracy of the magnitude-frequency values is influenced by the variability of flow, the number of years of flow record, and the recurrence interval calculated.</p><p>High-flow magnitude and frequency for ungaged sites can be estimated from regression equations using significant drainage-basin characteristics of contributing-drainage area; 50-year, 24-hour rainfall; and free-water-surface evaporation. Standard errors of estimate for ungaged sites on ungaged streams range from 31 to 49 percent, generally increasing with recurrence interval. If an ungaged site is near a gaging station having 10 or more years of record on the same stream, the data for the gaging station may be used to improve the regression
