The ideal network, which comprises several subnetworks, provides direction in the development of an actual network of wells currently monitored by known operating agencies. The ideal network can serve as a basis for the future expansion of the actual network as more wells are included in the inventory of active monitoring networks. The management objectives of these networks are to develop a general baseline of ground-water quality, to identify temporal and spatial trends in ground-water quality, and to identify large-scale sources of contamination of ground water. The networks are based on an information structure that includes land use, surface and subsurface geology, ground-water levels, surface- and ground-water quality, possible sources of contamination, and active ground-water-quality monitoring networks. Development of the categories and subcategories of network objectives, which are needed to describe the quality of the ground water in the basin, makes clear the inadequacy of the currently operated networks. The expansion of ground-water-quality monitoring in the San Joaquin Valley, therefore, would be necessary to approximate adequately the ideal network.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Regulatory and remedial actions have been completed. The site is in a remote area with neither man-made hydraulic stresses nor other anthropogenic sources of the compounds of interest. The spill is in the recharge area of a local flow system that discharges to a small closed lake approximately 1,000 feet down the hydraulic gradient. The aquifer is pitted outwash dissected by younger glacial channels and is underlain by poorly permeable till at a depth of about 80 feet. Ground water dissolves oil floating on the water table under the spill site and moves toward the lake. At the water table, ground water enters the lake through lacustrine sediments; at depth, flow may be underneath the lake through the outwash. Contaminant transport has been as rapid as 4 feet per day based on the rate of movement of contaminants monitored through wells installed within a few days of the spill, but average rates are undoubtedly much less.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, MN","doi":"10.3133/wri844188","usgsCitation":"1984, Ground-water contamination by crude oil at the Bemidji, Minnesota, research site; US Geological Survey Toxic Waste--ground-water contamination study: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 84-4188, x, 107 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri844188.","productDescription":"x, 107 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":58984,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4188/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119476,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4188/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","city":"Bemidji","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.09074687957764,\n              47.57481758275047\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.08894443511963,\n              47.57376082974435\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.0900387763977,\n              47.57295015544948\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.09201288223267,\n              47.57392006786331\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.09074687957764,\n              47.57481758275047\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66d04b","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Hult, M. Each meter was rated individually on a rod suspension and then rerated on a cable suspension, with the appropriate weight assembly. Vertical and veer cable angles were measured along with meter yaw angle. The effect of the weight assembly on the rod-suspension rating for each meter was illustrated by computing a correction coefficient which ranged between 0.88 and 1.10 depending on the weight system used and the fluid velocity. A sluch-n-all type weight assembly least affected the meter rating and was the most stable in all flow conditions. Mount Finkol (Mt. Crozer), at 2,065 feet, is the highest point on the island. Mountainous ridges descend sharply to narrow coastal strips which support a population of 5,500 people. Many streams, some quite large relative to the size of the island, drain radially from the interior. The average annual discharge of surface water amounts to almost 7 million gallons per square mile per day. Annual rainfall for coastal areas on Kosrae averages about 200 inches, and is similar to the rainfall for coastal areas on the island of Ponape, about 340 statute miles to the northwest. Rainfall in the interior was estimated at 225 inches per year of which about two thirds runs off as streamflow. Surface-water quality is very good as shown by 42 chemical analyses of water from 12 streams. This report summarizes in one volume the hydrologic data collected and provides interpretations that can be used by planning and public works officials as a basis for making decisions on the development and management of their water resources. The data available for about 1,000 sites were separated by aquifer units and hydrologic units. Selected statistical moments were described for 19 constituents including major ions. About 96 percent of all sites in the data base were sampled only once. The sample data were classified by aquifer unit and hydrologic unit and analysis of variance was run to determine if significant differences exist between the units within each of these two classifications for the same 19 constituents on which statistical moments were determined. Results of the analysis of variance indicated both classification variables performed about the same, but aquifer unit did provide more separation for some constituents. Samples from the Rogue River basin were classified by location within the flow system and type of flow system. The samples were then analyzed using analysis of variance on 14 constituents to determine if there were significant differences between subsets classified by flow path. Results of this analysis were not definitive, but classification as to the type of flow system did indicate potential for segregating water-quality data into distinct subsets.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri844242","usgsCitation":"Miller, T.L., and Gonthier, J.B., 1984, Oregon ground-water quality and its The modified equipment was used to collect uncontaminated cores of unconsolidated ash and indurated tuff at Los Alamos, New Mexico. Core recovery obtained from the 210-foot deep test hole was about 92 percent. A standard HQ-size, triple-tube wireline core barrel (designed for the passage of liquid drilling fluids) was modified for air coring as follows: (1) Air passages were milled in the latch body part of the head assembly; (2) the inside dimension of the outer core barrel tube was machined and honed to provide greater clearance between the inner and outer barrels; (3) oversized reaming devices were added to the outer core barrel and the coring bit to allow more clearance for air and cuttings return; (4) the eight discharge ports in the coring bit were enlarged. To control airborne-dust pollution, a dust-and-cuttings discharge subassembly, designed and built by project personnel, was used. The island is volcanic, nearly circular in shape, and covered with lush tropical vegetation. The mountainous interior has the highest peaks in the western Pacific. Annual rainfall at Kolonia and other coastal areas is 191 inches. Inland at higher elevations, the rainfall is considerably higher. The upper Nanpil River basin averages about 340 inches annually. Runoff-to-rainfall ratios for Ponapean streams show that about two thirds of the rain falling on the island runs off. Flow-duration curves show the similarity of the geology, vegetation, and rainfall of the drainage basins and indicate little ground-water contribution to surface runoff. Surface-water quality is excellent as shown by 53 chemical anlyses of water from 19 streams. Water of the Nanpil River, the source of water for the central water system, is especially low in dissolved elements and solids. This report summarizes in one volume all the hydrologic data collected and provides analyses that may be used by planning and public works officials as a basis for making decisions on the development and management of their water resources. Drainage modifications in this Coastal Plain basin, consisting primarily of channel excavation and clearing of channel blockages, were completed in December 1981. The hydrologic condition of the basin before and during modification was determined from observed data.\r\n\r\nObserved data indicate hydrologic changes occurred in selected basin characteristics. For example, water levels in the surficial aquifer within 250 feet of Juniper Branch declined as much as 0.4 feet during modifications; at distances greater than 250 feet from the stream, ground-water levels did not change. Base flows increased, and suspended-sediment concentrations for high flows were several times greater than before channel modifications. Increases in selected chemical constituent concentrations in stream water during modifications were as follows: calcium, 12 percent; sodium, 18 percent; bicarbonate, 84 percent; and phosphorous, 80 percent. Significant changes were not found in either pesticide concentrations or coliform bacteria counts.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri844025","usgsCitation":"Watkins, S., and Simmons, C., 1984, Hydrologic conditions in the Chicod Creek basin, North Carolina, before and during channel modifications, 1975-81: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 84-4025, vii, 36 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri844025.","productDescription":"vii, 36 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":59167,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4025/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123292,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4025/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Chicod Creek basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.3382568359375,\n              35.60818490437746\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.32177734375,\n              35.60148556537354\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.31216430664061,\n              35.594785665487244\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.2998046875,\n              35.595902354416566\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.28881835937499,\n              35.58808520476323\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.27371215820312,\n              35.5936689609791\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.25997924804688,\n              35.60036895434144\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.24624633789062,\n              35.60930140634475\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.21466064453125,\n              35.610417892730524\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.2064208984375,\n              35.598135685537905\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.19680786132812,\n              35.59255224089235\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.18994140625,\n              35.586968406786475\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.18170166015625,\n              35.576916524038616\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.16659545898438,\n              35.570214567965984\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.14324951171875,\n              35.56686337967425\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.12127685546875,\n              35.563512051219696\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.11166381835938,\n              35.561277754384555\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.10479736328125,\n              35.555691739779654\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.06634521484375,\n              35.543401137387335\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.07321166992188,\n              35.48415637985317\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.07870483398436,\n              35.43605776486772\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.09312438964844,\n              35.38513141280172\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.12265014648438,\n              35.383451974194934\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.29774475097656,\n              35.38569121790089\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.3382568359375,\n              35.60818490437746\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a28e4b07f02db61161b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Watkins, S.A.","contributorId":83962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Watkins","given":"S.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203182,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Simmons, C.E.","contributorId":32572,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Simmons","given":"C.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203181,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Included are data collected from 1966 to 1979 by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation for 98 public-supply wells, and data collected during 1982 by the U.S. Geological Survey for 29 wells. The data for the 98 public supplies indicate that 85 percent have a record of total coliform occurrence in the raw water. Data from the 29 wells sampled by the Geological Survey indicate that 55 percent have a record total coliform occurrence. The dissolved oxygen decreased from 8 milligrams per liter at the Jordan Narrows to less than 5 milligrams per liter at 500 North Street. Chemical oxygen demand increased about 23 percent and biochemical oxygen demand increased 90 percent. Nearly 78 percent of the water samples analyzed for total mercury exceeded the State intended-use standard of 0.05 microgram per liter. Concentrations of ammonia, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc exceeded the standards periodically. The pesticides DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, methoxychlor, and 2,4-D were occasionally detected in bottom materials. Most were present in quantities of less than 15 micrograms per kilogram. Concentrations of three indicator bacteria (total coliform, fecal coliform, and fecal streptococcus) increased in a downstream direction. Concentrations of total coliform bacteria often exceeded 5,000 colonies per 100 milliliters and concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria often exceeded 2,000 colonies per 100 milliliters. The primary sources of turbidity in the Jordan River are Utah Lake and discharges from the wastewater-treatment plants. Large values of turbidity were measured at the Jordan Narrows with a summer mean value of 88 nephelometer turbidity units (NTU) and a winter mean value of 43 NTU. Babelthuap is the second largest island in the Western Pacific and comprises more than 80 percent of the total land area of the Palau Islands. Most of the islands are uninhabited limestone ridges covered with dense vegetation. These islands have no freshwater resources and are not included in this report. The island of Koror with an area of 3.6 square miles is the administrative, commercial, and population center of Palau and has an annual average rainfall of 148 inches. Short-term rainfall records at other locations in the islands indicate little variation in annual rainfall throughout the Palau Islands. Runoff-to-rainfall ratios for streams on Babelthuap show that about 70 percent of the rain falling on the island runs off to the ocean. The uniformity of rainfall and basin characteristics is shown by the excellent correlation between mean annual rainfall on Koror and streamflow on Babelthuap and by the close correlations between discharge at gaging stations and partial-record sites. Results are presented in figures and as numerical values, and the analytical methods are detailed. The transport of alkalinity to the Bay from the delta during 1980 was 3.8 x 10 to Ohe 10th power equivalents; this estimate is based on the freshwater alkalinity concentrations predicted by the north San Francisco Bay salinity-alkalinity distributions. North San Francisco Bay distributions are primarily the result of conservative mixing of freshwater from the Delta with Pacific Ocean water. Nonlinear distributions are the consequence of alkalinity variations in the freshwater rather than the effects of in-estuary processes or sources. Seasonal inflow of agricultural waste water is a major cause of freshwater alkalinity variations. South San Francisco Bay salinity-alkalinity distributions show the effects of variations in Delta outflow rate, local streams, and municipal waste-water inflows. Concentration ranges were generally small compared to the seasonal range of river flow rate; transport rates to the Delta and to the Bay varied primarily as a function of flow rate. Surface runoff from winter storms diluted salinity and alkalinity concentrations. DOC and POC were generally more concentrated during winter than during other times of the year. Variations in tributary flows resulted in sometimes-large salinity and alkalinity variations during spring through fall. Late summer concentrations were high because of large inflows of agricultural waste waters. In 1979, aldicarb was found in substantial concentrations in ground water throughout the area. The New York State Department of Health set a limit of 7 micrograms per liter for aldicarb in drinking water. Extensive ground-water sampling into 1980 showed widespread contamination ranging from small amounts to as much as 515 micrograms per liter. In 1980, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of aldicarb on Long Island at the manufacturer 's request. A 1982 sampling study found aldicarb to have penetrated to about 40 feet below the water table in concentrations ranging from below detection limit to 239 micrograms per liter. Despite reputed toxicity, no instance of aldicarb poisoning on Long Island has been documented. These relations show that suspended-sediment concentrations vary in direct proportion to streamflow. The number of coincident instantaneous suspended-sediment concentration and water-discharge values available for each regression analysis ranged from 6 to 98. Standard error of estimates for 35 relationships were usually large and correlation were relatively small. Large standard errors and small correlations are expected because of the complexity of the fluvial system. The effects of other factors, such as geology, topography, climate, soils, vegetation, and land use were not evaluated. Daily suspended-sediment discharges for four stations were computed by the ' sediment-transport-curve ' method described in this report , and compared with values computed by the traditional ' temporal-concentration-graph ' method. Annual sediment yields in tons per square mile drainage area, were compared in like manner. For those stations examined, values computed by the ' sediment-transport-curve ' method were within 58 percent of those computed by the temporal-concentration-graph ' method when only one year of record was used, but were within 12 to 21 percent when 2 to 4 years of record were averaged. Mean concentrations of dissolved oxygen decreased from 8.1 milligrams per liter at the Jordan Narrows to 4.7 milligrams per liter at 500 North Street during April 1981 to September 1982. Coincident with the decrease, the biochemical-oxygen demand increased from 5 to 7 milligrams per liter. About 50 percent of the dissolved-oxygen concentrations and 90 percent of the 5-day biochemical-oxygen demand measured downstream from 1700 South Street exceeded the State intended-use standards. An estimated 6. million pounds of oxygen-demanding substances as measured by 5-day biochemical-oxygen demand were discharged to the Jordan River during 1981 from point sources downstream from 9000 South Street. Seven wastewater-treatment plants contributed 77 percent of this load, nonstorm base flows contributed 22 percent, and storm flows less than 1 percent. The Surplus Canal diversion at 2100 South Street removed about 70 percent of this load, and travel time of about 1 day also decreased the actual effects of the load on the river. Reaeration rates during September and October were quite high (average K2 at 20 degrees Celsius was about 12 per day) between the Jordan Narrows and 9000 South Street, but they decreased to 2.4 per day in the reach from 1330 South to 1800 North Streets. This new information improved understanding of the area 's surface-water hydrology. Average annual runoff ranges from 11 inches in the lowland portions of the peninsula to 100 inches in the Seldovia area. For drainage basins in the Kenai Lowland, maximum flood runoff rates range from about 10 to 82 cubic feet per second per square mile. In the Seldovia area maximum peak discharges range from about 65 to 280 cubic feet per second per square mile. Low-flow discharges are higher in the Seldovia area than on the lower peninsula. Calcium and bicarbonate ions dominate the water in streams draining the study area; the water is soft and has a low dissolved-solids content. Measured stream water temperatures range from 0 to 23 degrees Celsius in the Kenai Lowland and from 0 to 11.5 degrees Celsius in the Seldovia area.
