Volume 2: Susquehanna and Potomac River basins","docAbstract":"
Water resources data for the 1983 water year for Pennsylvania consist of records of discharge and water quality of streams; contents of lakes and reservoirs; and water levels, and water quality of ground-water wells. This volume contains records for water discharge at 84 stations; contents at 13 lakes and reservoirs, water quality at 18 gaging stations; and water levels at 26 network observation wells. Also included are data for 12 crest-stage, 98 low flow, and 3 water-quality, and 85 ground water-quality partial-record stations. Locations of these sites are shown on figures 7-10. Additional water data were collected at various sites not involved in-the systematic data-collection program and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analysis. These data together with the data in Volumes 1 and 3 represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State, local, and Federal agencies in Pennsylvania.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wdrPA832","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, The Susquehanna River Basin Commission, and with other State, municipal, and Federal agencies","usgsCitation":"Buchanan, J., Loper, W., Schaffstall, W., and Hainly, R., 1984, Water resources data, Pennsylvania, water year 1983. As a result, the volcanic ash fell some 50 miles to the south in the Bull Run watershed, the principal water-supply source for the metropolitan area of Portland, Oreg. Water samples collected from three stream sites within the watershed were compared with samples collected during the same season in previous years. No detectable changes were noted in chemical characteristics. Precipitation samples collected immediately after the June 12-13 ash fall ranged in specific conductance from 20 to 41 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 4.0 to 4.3 pH units. Stream samples collected during the May-June period ranged in specific conductance from 18 to 28 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 6.7 to 7.5 pH units. Volcanic-ash samples were collected and analyzed for particle size, chemical composition, and weight. Significant differences in particle size of ash were found in samples from two separate eruptions. A computer model was used to simulate the changes in streamflow and water levels from 1980 through 1999. Six pumpage options were tested using variations in pumpage rate and number of wells pumping in the model area. If the full amount appropriated by water rights were pumped rather than actual 1979 conditions of pumpage, annual pumpage would be reduced 24 percent, but net annual river loss would be reduced only 1 percent. A pumpage increase of approximately 19 percent over 1979 pumpage conditions would cause an increase of net annual river loss from 5 to 9 percent. Increased pumpage, in the form of additional wells in the model area, would cause additional ground water to be removed from storage in the aquifer and an increase in net annual river loss.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri844082","usgsCitation":"Dunlap, L.E., Lindgren, R.J., and Carr, J.E., 1984, Projected effects of ground-water withdrawals in the Arkansas River Valley, 1980-99, Hamilton and Kearny Counties, southwestern Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 84-4082, vi, 168 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri844082.","productDescription":"vi, 168 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408273,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35975.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":55778,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4082/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157450,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4082/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","county":"Hamilton County, Kearny County","otherGeospatial":"Arkansas River Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -102.079,\n 37.8030\n ],\n [\n -101.373,\n 37.8030\n ],\n [\n -101.373,\n 38.056\n ],\n [\n -102.079,\n 38.056\n ],\n [\n -102.079,\n 37.8030\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d9c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dunlap, L. Two hydrologic response unit delineations were studied. The more complex delineation did not provide superior results. In this application, the optimum numbers of hydrologic response units were 16 and 18 for the two alternatives. The first alternative with 16 units was modified to facilitate interfacing with the storm mode. A parameter subset was defined for the daily mode using sensitivity analysis. Following optimization, the simulated hydrographs approximated the observed hydrograph during the first year, a year of large snowfall. More runoff was simulated than observed during the second year. There was reasonable correspondence between the observed snowpack and the simulated snowpack the first season but poor the second. More soil moisture was withdrawn than was indicated by soil moisture observations. Optimization of parameters in the storm mode resulted in much larger values than originally estimated, commonly larger than published values of the Green and Ampt parameters. Following optimization, variable results were obtained. The results obtained are probably related to inadequate representation of basin infiltration characteristics and to precipitation variability. The procedure will allow the approximate solution to almost any spillage problem concerning traveltime and concentration during periods of relatively steady flow between 50- and 95-percent flow duration. A new procedure for calculating unit peak concentration is derived. The new procedure, based on the similarity in shape of a time-concentration curve and a scalene triangle, allows unit peak concentration to be expressed in terms of the length of the dye cloud. This approach facilitates the linking of peak-concentration attenuation curves for long reaches of rivers which are divided into subreaches for study. An example problem is solved for a hypothetical spill of 20,000 pounds of contaminant at Magnolia, West Virginia. The predicted traveltime of the leading edge, peak concentration, and trailing edge to Point of Rocks, Maryland (110 miles downstream), are 295 , 375, and 540 hours, respectively, for a flow duration of 80 percent. The predicted maximum concentration is 340 micrograms/L. Water outflow, inflow, and miscellaneous sites were also monitored. The information was used to evaluate the effectiveness of management practices in reducing sediment loads in irrigated areas. This study was one of seven Model Implementation Plan projects selected by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to demonstrate the effectiveness of institutional and administrative implementation of management plans. Sediment discharges from the four basins could not be correlated with changes in management practices, because Imhoff Cone readings collected for the study showed no statistical differences between the three irrigation seasons. However, one drain acted as a sink for sediment where more lands were sprinkler irrigated; this drain had a smaller proportion of row crops than did the other three drains. The potentiometric surface of the Gordo aquifer slopes generally to the west away from the outcrop area and it is marked by large ground-water cones of depression in the Tupelo and Columbus areas. Water levels in or near the outcrop of the Gordo aquifer show little long-term change. Heavy withdrawals in the downdip area have caused water-level declines of about 2 feet per year since 1978 in much of the confined part of the aquifer. The water-level decline in the Tupelo area has averaged about 5 feet per year since 1966; however, there has been water-level rise at the center of the cone of depression as a result of a change in the distribution of pumping. Land-use types in the basins were light commerical, multifamily housing, single-family housing, and a shopping center. The overall accuracy of model predictions of peak flows and runoff volumes was about 15 percent for storms with rainfall intensities of less than 1 inch per hour and runoff volume of greater than 0.01 inch. Predictions generally were unsatisfactory for storm having a rainfall intensity of more than 1 inch per hour, or runoff of 0.01 inch or less. The Distributed Routing Rainfall-Runoff Model-Quality, a multievent runoff-quality model developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, was calibrated and verified on four basins. The model was found to be most useful in the prediction of seasonal loads of constituents in the runoff resulting from rainfall. Total water use, excluding wildlife impoundments, was 32,970 million gallons per day, which was 19 percent less than in 1980; consumption was 4,610 million gallons per day. Ground water use was 4,270 million gallons per day, and suface-water use was 2 ,870 million gallons per day. Use in million gallons per day, by categories, was as follows: public supply, 247 (down 6 percent from 1980); self-supplied industry, 237 (up 1 percent); rural domestic and livestock, 120 (up 2 percent); irrigation, 4,370 (up 7 percent); fish farming, 353 (down 1 percent); electric energy generation, 27,640 (down 22 percent). Of the total water use for electric energy generation, 17.4 million gallons per day of surface water was used for hydroelectric energy generation, down about 33 percent from 1980 estimated usage. The outwash ranges in thickness from 0 to 150 feet. Depth to water is generally less than 15 feet, and annual water-level fluctuations are less than 5 feet. Aquifer-test results indicate that transmissivities range from 4,600 to 18,500 feet squared per day and storage coefficients range from 0.10 to 0.25. Yields of more than 2,000 gallons per minute can be obtained locally from properly constructed wells.
\n
Average annual precipitation is 25.93 inches, and average annual recharge to the aquifer is estimated to be 8 inches. Base-flow measurements of the Long Prairie River between Long Prairie and Motley during October 1978 and October 1979 indicate average net gains of 0.85 and 1.3 cubic feet per second per river mile.
\n
The water is a calcium bicarbonate type and is generally suitable for most uses. However, elevated concentrations of selected chemicals in local areas may require treatment of the water for specialized uses. The water is hard to very hard with dissolved-solids concentrations ranging from about 200 to 400 milligrams per liter. Locally, nitrate concentrations are as much as 6.4 milligrams per liter. Residuals of pesticides are present but do not exceed recommended limits as established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for domestic consumption.
\n
Results from numerical modeling experiments indicate that, with proper development, the ground-water system can accommodate additional withdrawals. One experiment indicated that reduction in recharge from 8 to 4 inches annually over 4 years, and anticipated increases in pumping from 2.1 million gallons per day (1978 pumpage) to 7.7 million gallons per day, would cause water levels to decline regionally only about 9 feet and ground-water discharge to streams to decline only about 20 percent.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Before extensive irrigation in the 1960's, recharge from precipitation was balanced by natural discharge. Baseflow was estimated as approximately 118 cubic feet per second in 1980. A finite-difference digital model simulated flow in the aquifer. Recharge was adjusted so that 1980 baseflow was 118 cubic feet per second. Recharge in the eastern half of the modeled area was 0.45 inch per year and one-half this value in the western half. Three hydraulic conductivity zones were used: 19.3 feet per day in the east; 16.2 feet per day in the center; and 8.28 feet per day in the west. A specific yield of 14.7 percent was used. The calibrated model gave a mean difference between predevelopment modeled and measured heads of -0.044 foot. Using 1980 pumping rates, the model was used to predict 1993 and 2020 water in storage and saturated thickness. The calculated water in storage , in million acre-feet, in 1941 (predevelopment) was 135.2; in 1980, 121.9; in 1993, 112.7; and in 2020, 96.2. Thin sections of selected sediment material were made for petrographic examination. Preliminary interpretations indicate that (1) it may be possible to distinguish the various sediment interbeds on the basis of their mineralogy, (2) the presence of carbonate horizons in sedimentary interbeds may be utilized to approximate the time of exposure and the climate while the surface was exposed (which affected the hydrogeologic character of the sediment), and the type and orientation of fracture-filling material may be utilized to determine the mechanism by which fractures were filled. It was assumed that the principal impacts on the ground-water system due to mining will occur in the relatively shallow aquifers which can be grouped into three homogeneous aquifers, namely, the Wyodak coal, the overburden, and the under burden. Emphasis of this report is on the results of analysis of surface-water resources in the Caballo Creek drainage. A surface-water model of the Caballo Creek drainage was developed using the Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran model to help assess the impacts of mining activities on streamflow. The Caballo Creek drainage was divided into 10 land segments and 6 stream reaches in the modeling process. Three simulation runs show little, if any, change in streamflow between pre- and post-mining conditions and very little change between pre-mining and during-mining conditions. The principal reason for the absence of change is the high infiltration rate used in the model for all three conditions.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834235","usgsCitation":"Jordan, P.R., Bloyd, R., and Daddow, P., 1984, An assessment of cumulative impacts of coal mining on the hydrology in part of the Powder River structural basin, Wyoming: A progress report: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4235, iv, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834235.","productDescription":"iv, 29 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394363,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35874.htm"},{"id":56748,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4235/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123888,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4235/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -105.75,\n 44\n ],\n [\n -105.25,\n 44\n ],\n [\n -105.25,\n 44.217\n ],\n [\n -105.75,\n 44.217\n ],\n [\n -105.75,\n 44\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad9e4b07f02db684e08","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jordan, P. Analyses were also made of source agricultural drainage waters from the San Luis Drain discharged into the refuge, and surrounding irrigation supply and return waters. Selenium concentrations range from 140 to 1 ,400 micrograms per liter (microgram/L) in irrigation drain waters supplied to the San Luis Drain. The selenium supplied to the Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge is to a small extent precipitated in sodium sulfate (thenardite) but a higher concentration was found in an alagal mat. Most other waters of the area contain less than detectable < 2 micrograms per liter concentrations of selenium. Ground water from the local artesian aquifer is suitable for most uses and it is estimated that yield can be as much as 100 to 500 gallons per minute. Long-term yields cannot be calculated from available data. Data from 1968-80 show no measurable declines in water levels or rates of flow due to pumping from the aquifer. Analysis of ground-water samples indicated no seawater intrusion into the aquifer. Mean monthly flows of two streams in the study area ranged from 0.53 to 3.28 cubic feet per second in February 1979. Estimated average 7-day low flows with a recurrance interval of 2 years ranged from 0.3 to 3.0 cubic feet per second. Analyses of surface-water samples indicated concentrations of Aldrin, DDD, DDT, Dieldrin, Diazinon , and Ethyl Parathion that exceeded EPA limits for protection of marine life. Samples of the stream-bottom material in one stream had high concentrations of Aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, Dichlobenil, and Dieldrin. Tribally owned tidelands into which these streams flow may be contaminated by these toxic chemicals. Data uses and funding sources were identified for the 140 complete record streamflow-gaging stations operated in Kansas during 1983 with a budget of $793,780. As a result of the evaluation of the needs and uses of data from the stream-gaging program, it was found that the 140 gaging stations were needed to meet these data requirements. The average standard error of estimation of streamflow records was 20.8 percent, assuming the 1983 budget and operating schedule of 6-week interval visitations and based on 85 of the 140 stations. It was shown that this overall level of accuracy could be improved to 18.9 percent by altering the 1983 schedule of station visitations. A minimum budget of $760 ,000, with a corresponding average error of estimation of 24.9 percent, is required to operate the 1983 program. None of the stations investigated were suitable for the application of alternative methods for simulating discharge records. Improved instrumentation can have a very positive impact on streamflow uncertainties by decreasing lost record.
