The map reports contain information on subjects that characterize the geohydrology of the province, including the ground-water hydrology, ground-water quality, surface distribution of selected rock types, tectonic conditions, areal geophysics, Pleistocene lakes and marshes, and mineral and energy resources. This work is a part of the U.S. Geological Survey's program for geologic and hydrologic evaluation of the Basin and Range province to identify potentially suitable regions for further study relative to isolation of high-level nuclear waste (Bedinger, Sargent, and Reed, 1984).

Data for this report were taken largely from Spengler and others (1979), supplemented by data from individual geologic maps and reports, following the project guidelines as defined in Sargent and Bedinger (1984). As used in this report, granitic rocks include granodiorite, quartz monzonite, and granite, and locally associated mafic rocks such as diorite and gabbro. In the Snake Range and Ruby Mountains, Stewart (1980) has recognized large areas as metamorphic core complexes, and in these complexes some plutonic masses may not extend to great depth because of lateral displacement along low-angle faults subsequent to intrusion.

The Description of Map Units includes the sources of data, the geologic, and if available, the radiometric age, lithologic character, type of intrusive body and relation to rock units, where known, for the granitic rocks within outlined and numbered areas in each county of the study area. The radiometric ages of the rock units are only those which are available and do not necessarily represent the entire age range of the geologic units.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834119D","usgsCitation":"Sargent, K.A., and Roggensack, K., 1984, Map showing outcrops of granitic rocks, Basin and Range Province, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4119, Report: 36 p.; 2 Plates: 44.34 x 34.69 inches and 43.46 x 37.84 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834119D.","productDescription":"Report: 36 p.; 2 Plates: 44.34 x 34.69 inches and 43.46 x 37.84 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":118874,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4119d/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54388,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4119d/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373628,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4119d/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373629,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4119d/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"500000","datum":"National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929","country":"United States","state":"Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -120.0146484375,\n 35.02099970111467\n ],\n [\n -114.027099609375,\n 35.02099970111467\n ],\n [\n -114.027099609375,\n 42.00032514831621\n ],\n [\n -120.0146484375,\n 42.00032514831621\n ],\n [\n -120.0146484375,\n 35.02099970111467\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a37e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sargent, K. Ground water in this area occurs chiefly in fractures in hard pre-Tertiary metavolcanic and plutonic rocks generally above a depth of 215 feet. Water outflow, inflow, and miscellaneous sites were also monitored. The information was used to evaluate the effectiveness of management practices in reducing sediment loads in irrigated areas. This study was one of seven Model Implementation Plan projects selected by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to demonstrate the effectiveness of institutional and administrative implementation of management plans. Sediment discharges from the four basins could not be correlated with changes in management practices, because Imhoff Cone readings collected for the study showed no statistical differences between the three irrigation seasons. However, one drain acted as a sink for sediment where more lands were sprinkler irrigated; this drain had a smaller proportion of row crops than did the other three drains. Seasonal patterns of wetfall and dryfall generally were similar for all constituents except chloride in both rural and urban watersheds. Similarity between constituents and between rural and urban watersheds suggested that regional air masses transported from the Gulf of Mexico by frontal storm movements influence seasonal patterns of atmospheric deposition in the metropolitan area. Local influences such as industrial, agricultural, and vehicular air pollutants were found to influence the magnitude or rate of atmospheric deposition rather than the seasonal pattern. Chloride was primarily influenced by northwest frontal storms laden with coastal chloride. Local influences such as dust from road deicing salt dust are thought to have caused an increase in atmospheric chloride during June.
\n
The atmospheric contribution to nonpoint-source-runoff pollution of nitrogen, in the form of nitrite-plus-nitrate, and lead was extremely high contributing as much as 84 percent of the runoff load. In contrast, phosphorus and chloride inputs were low averaging of 6 percent of the total runoff load. Future investigations of nonpoint-source pollution in runoff might include collection of data on atmospheric deposition of nitrite-plus-nitrate nitrogen and lead because of the importance of that Rhodamine WT dye was injected into the river at Casper, and the resultant dye cloud was traced by sampling as it moved downstream. Samples were taken in three equal-flow sections of the river 's lateral transect at three sites, then analyzed in a fluorometer. The flow in the river was 940 cubic feet per second. The data consist of measured stream mileages and time, distance, and concentration graphs of the dye cloud. The peak concentration traveled through the reach in 24 hours, averaging 1.5 miles per hour; the leading edge took about 22 hours, averaging 1.7 miles per hour; and the trailing edge took 35 hours, averaging 1.0 mile per hour. Present conditions are described as a baseline to enable planners to allocate available water and to measure changes in quantity and quality of water in the future. The White River basin contains extensive energy resources consisting of oil, natural gas, coal, and oil shale. Large quantities of water will be required for energy-resource development and associated municipal and industrial uses. An average of 70% of the annual flow in the White River occurs during May, June, and July as a result of snowmelt runoff. The 7-day, 10-year low-flow discharges/sq mi and the 1-day, 25-year high-flow discharges/sq mi are larger in the eastern part of the basin than in the western part. Flow-duration curves indicate that high flows in the White River and the North and South Fork White Rivers result mainly from snowmelt runoff and that base flow is sustained throughout the year by groundwater discharge from the alluvial and bedrock aquifers. Water type varies in the basin; however, calcium and sodium are the dominantly occurring cations and sulfate and bicarbonate are the dominantly occurring anions. Computed total annual dissolved-solids loads in the White River range from 31 ,800 tons/yr in the North Fork White River to 284,000 tons/yr at the mouth. A 10% increase to a 14% decrease of the dissolved-solids load could result at the mouth of the White River near Ouray, Utah. This corresponds to a 5% increase to a 10% decrease in dissolved-solids concentration. The seasonal pattern of stream temperatures was found to fit a harmonic curve.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri844022","usgsCitation":"Boyle, J.M., Covay, K., and Bauer, D.P., 1984, Quantity and quality of streamflow in the White River basin, Colorado and Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 84-4022, viii, 84 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri844022.","productDescription":"viii, 84 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":404386,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35925.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":55095,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4022/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157583,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4022/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Utah","otherGeospatial":"White River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -109.698,\n 40.387\n ],\n [\n -107.148,\n 40.387\n ],\n [\n -107.148,\n 39.55\n ],\n [\n -109.698,\n 39.55\n ],\n [\n -109.698,\n 40.387\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ac28","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boyle, J. Total phenol concentrations of 36,000 microgm/liter have been detected 40 ft below land surface in a test hole 100 ft south of an overflow impoundment but less than 10 microgm/liter 90 ft below land surface. Samples collected in test holes 1,350 ft downgradient from the surface impoundments and 100 ft north of Pensacola Bay, above and immediately below a clay lens, indicate that phenol contaminated groundwater may not be discharging directly into Pensacola Bay. Phenol concentrations exceeding 20 microgm/liter were detected in samples from a drainage ditch discharging directly into Bayou Chico. Microbiological data collected near the test site suggest that an anaerobic methanogenic ecosystem contributes to a reduction in phenol concentrations in groundwater. A laboratory study using bacteria isolated from the study site indicates that phenol, 2-methylphenol, and 3-methylphenol are significantly degraded and that methanogenesis reduces total phenol concentrations in laboratory digestors by 45%. Pentachlorophenol may inhibit methanogenesis at concentrations exceeding 0.45 milligm/liter. Twenty-six test wells were drilled to determine the occurrence of ground water in relation to topographic position, regolith thickness, streamflow gains or losses, and the lithology of the underlying formations. Yields to 26 test wells ranged from 0 to about 300 gal/min and averaged about 68 gal/mi. Nine wells yielded 80 to about 300 gal/min; their specific capacities ranged from about 0.71 to 12.7 (gal/min)/ft of drawdown. Seven of these nine wells yielded water from solution openings in the Warsaw Limestone. The other two wells yielded water from gravel and sand in the regolith. Yield-specific-capacity tests were made on two wells. One well was pumped at an average rate of 350 gal/min for 72 hours with 39.77 feet of drawdown. The second well was pumped for 8 hours at 120 gal/min with 20.86 feet of drawdown. The water from both wells was generally of good quality. Dissolved solids concentrations were less than 200 mg/L. The flows from Schoharie Creek at Prattsville, the primary source of flow data in the basin, and tributary flows from the six minor basins downstream, are combined and routed along the 9.7 mile reach of the Schoharie Creek between Prattsville and the reservoir inlet. Data from five historic floods were used for model calibration and four for verification. The accuracy of the model as measured by the difference between simulated and observed total flow volumes, is within 14 percent. Results indicate that inflows to the Blenheim-Gilboa Reservoir can be predicted approximately 2 hours in advance. One of the historical floods was chosen for additional model testing to assess a hypothetical real-time model application. Total flow-volume errors ranged from 30.2 percent to -9.2 percent. Each area had one site draining an unmined basin and a nearby site(s) draining a partly surface-mined basin. Flow-duration curves for streams draining surface-mined land had lower variability than those from unmined land. By adjusting an index of variability according to the percentage of surface-mined land in a basin, present techniques can be used to develop synthetic flow-duration curves. Surface mining changes basin characteristics so that peak flows decrease and low flows increase. Regression equations were developed relating storm runoff volume and peak discharge to basin characteristics and climatological data. Concentrations of dissolved solids, sulfate , and calcium were higher in streams draining extensively mined areas. Different mining areas of Illinois yield regional differences in concentrations of these substances. Surface-mined basins had lower suspended-sediment yields than unmined basins. These ponds have a history of summer algal blooms and fish kills. Water entering these ponds contains quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus far higher than the levels known to promote excessive growth of aquatic vegetation. As the water moves through the three ponds, nitrogen levels decrease. Although some nitrogen is lost to the atmosphere by denitrification, the bulk of the nitrogen probably is retained in the pond sediments. There is a net decrease in phosphorus in the water leaving Carding Millpond compared to the water entering Hager Pond. However, during most sampling periods, the phosphorus concentration of water leaving Carding Millpond is still above the level known to cause excessive growth of aquatic vegetation in lakes. During certain summer periods, there appears to be release of some phosphorus from the sediments in Carding and Grist Millponds. No improvement in water quality of the three ponds can be expected until the concentrations of nutrients entering Hager Pond are reduced to levels that will not support excessive growth of aquatic vegetation. The aquifer is a major source for municipal and industrial water supply in Union County. Greatest withdrawal occurs near El Dorado. Because of this withdrawal, the potentiometric surface at El Dorado has been lowered more than 300 feet. Geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data indicate that water from a graben south and east of El Dorado is the source of contamination from salt within the El Dorado aquifer. The data indicates that surface brines and deeper aquifers are not the sources of chloride contamination. Lowering the potentiometric surface near El Dorado has caused water to move out of the graben toward El Dorado. Estimates based on interpretation of electric logs for two wells in the graben indicate chloride equivalents may be as high as 2,500 milligrams per liter in the aquifer. Concentrations outside the graben range from 130 to 650 milligrams per liter at the west end of the graben and from 25 to 150 milligrams per liter farther west and north. The surficial aquifer, consisting of thin permeable zones of sand, shell, and limestone, provides limited water supplies (10-50 gallons per minute). Its estimated transmissivity ranges from less than 100 to 10,000 feet squared per day. Its water is generally of acceptable quality for most uses, except near the coast. The Floridan aquifer consists of three zones of permeable limestone and dolomite separated by semiconfining beds of hard, massive dolomite and limestone, all of which are confined by leaky confining beds. The upper and middle zones, about 530-1,000 feet and 1,200-1,700 feet below land surface, respectively, have transmissivities ranging from 20,000-50,000 and 40,000-60,000 feet squared per day, respectively. The lower zone, about 2,000-2,100 feet below land surface contains very saline water. Water in the upper zone contains chloride concentrations generally ranging from 20-40 milligrams per liter. In Fernandina Beach, water from a few wells tapping this zone has relatively high chloride concentrations (190 milligrams per liter), probably due to upward migration of saline water from deeper zones through uncased or improperly-plugged well bores and not by lateral intrusion.
