The sand-and-gravel, Silurian dolomite, Galena-Platteville, and sandstone aquifers are the principal sources of ground water. Probable well yields from the sand- and-gravel aquifer and the Galena-Platteville aquifer range from 100 to 500 gallons per minute. Probable well yields for the Silurian dolomite, which depend in part on the degree of fracturing, are about 100 gallons per minute. Probable well yields from the sandstone aquifer range from less than 100 to more than 1,000 gallons per minute.
\n
Calcium and bicarbonate are the principal ions in ground water in Dodge County. The water is very hard, and the concentration of iron commonly exceeds the recommended limit for drinking water and the desirable concentration for water used for high-pressure boiler feed, some food processing, and leather finishing industries. The ground water generally is of suitable chemical quality for domestic, agricultural, and most industrial purposes.
\n
In 1979, an average of about 13 million gallons of ground water was pumped daily for residential, industrial, commercial, irrigation, stock watering, and other purposes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geolgical and Natural History Survey","usgsCitation":"DeVaul, R., Harr, C., and Schiller, J., 1983, Ground-water resources and geology of Dodge County, Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey Information Circular 44, v, 34 p.","productDescription":"v, 34 p.","numberOfPages":"40","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":308461,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":350386,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://wgnhs.uwex.edu/pubs/download_ic44/"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Dodge County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-88.8862,43.6336],[-88.7654,43.633],[-88.6763,43.6334],[-88.6447,43.6332],[-88.6238,43.6326],[-88.6124,43.6325],[-88.522,43.6323],[-88.4013,43.6309],[-88.4008,43.5435],[-88.4008,43.4598],[-88.4017,43.3701],[-88.4187,43.3703],[-88.4187,43.2856],[-88.4183,43.1964],[-88.5401,43.1978],[-88.6563,43.1986],[-88.7732,43.1998],[-88.8919,43.1995],[-89.0094,43.2],[-89.0084,43.2555],[-89.0094,43.286],[-89.0088,43.3738],[-89.0038,43.3737],[-89.0044,43.4616],[-89.0063,43.548],[-89.007,43.6332],[-88.8862,43.6336]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Dodge\",\"state\":\"WI\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5603cd41e4b03bc34f544b08","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"DeVaul, R.W.","contributorId":87624,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"DeVaul","given":"R.W.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":573215,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Harr, C.A.","contributorId":106920,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harr","given":"C.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":573216,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schiller, J.J.","contributorId":46135,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schiller","given":"J.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":573217,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The principal city, Lawton, uses surface water, supplemented by small quantities of ground water from the Arbuckle Group (Cambrian-Ordovician), for industrial and recreational use. During periods of drought, surface-water supplies in the Wichita Mountains area are not adequate to meet fully the increased water demands. An alternative source of water may be ground water from the Arbuckle Group. Other urban and rural consumers use ground water from Quaternary alluvium, the Rush Springs Formation (Permian), or the Arbuckle Group.","language":"English","publisher":"Oklahoma Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Norman, OK","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Oklahoma Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Havens, J., 1983, Reconnaissance of ground water in vicinity of Wichita Mountains southwestern Oklahoma: Circular 85, vii, 13 p.; Map: 1 Sheet: 28 x 32 inches.","productDescription":"vii, 13 p.; Map: 1 Sheet: 28 x 32 inches","numberOfPages":"18","costCenters":[{"id":516,"text":"Oklahoma Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":272876,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70046126.jpg"},{"id":272875,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.ogs.ou.edu/pubsscanned/Circulars/circular85mm.pdf"},{"id":272898,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://www.ogs.ou.edu/pubsscanned/CircularsPlates/C85PI.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Wichita Mountains","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -103.0,33.6192 ], [ -103.0,37.0 ], [ -94.4312,37.0 ], [ -94.4312,33.6192 ], [ -103.0,33.6192 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51a5d1ede4b0605bc571effe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Havens, John S.","contributorId":13949,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havens","given":"John S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":478972,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Roswell ground-water basin consists of a carbonate artesian aquifer overlain by a leaky confining bed, which, in turn is overlain by an alluvial water-table aquifer. The water-table aquifer is hydraulically connected to the Pecos River. Ground-water pumpage from about 1,500 wells in the basin was about 378,000 acre-feet in 1978. The purposes of the reconnaissance were: (1) To obtain information on the general inorganic chemical characteristics of the surface water throughout the Weber River basin and, (2) to determine some of the effects of the natural environment and of present water use on these chemical characteristics.

The reconnaissance was limited in scope and did not include intensive study of the effects of municipal sewage, irrigation, industry, or mining on water quality. The principal objective was to define the general water-quality characteristics of streams in the basin. A secondary objective was to define specific problem areas or stream reaches.
","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","usgsCitation":"Thompson, K.R., 1983, Reconnaissance of the quality of surface water in the Weber River basin, Utah: Technical Publication 76, vi, 74 p.","productDescription":"vi, 74 p.","numberOfPages":"85","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":267737,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":332001,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/libview.exe?Modinfo=Viewpub&LIBNUM=20-5-790"},{"id":267736,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://waterrights.utah.gov/docSys/v920/w920/w92000a1.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Morgan County, Summit County, Weber County","otherGeospatial":"Weber River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.071533203125,\n              41.32732632036622\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.15118408203125,\n              41.32320110223851\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.225341796875,\n              41.24890252240322\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.181396484375,\n              41.14143302653628\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.0880126953125,\n              41.03378713521864\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.9451904296875,\n              40.992337919312305\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.9342041015625,\n              40.932190241465634\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.00836181640625,\n              40.87406461663041\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.97540283203125,\n              40.75766014997032\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.84356689453125,\n              40.62020704520565\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.85455322265625,\n              40.56806745430726\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.85455322265625,\n              40.50335790374529\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80511474609375,\n              40.48997103470645\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.70898437499999,\n              40.48997103470645\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.2530517578125,\n              40.58997103470645\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.95779418945312,\n              40.56806745430726\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.85205078124999,\n              40.681679458715635\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.80535888671874,\n              40.99959341455486\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.08963012695312,\n              41.261291493919884\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.5826416015625,\n              41.40565583808169\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.91223144531249,\n              41.3850519497068\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.071533203125,\n              41.32732632036622\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5124ad70e4b0b6328103b53a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thompson, Kendall R.","contributorId":100854,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"Kendall","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":474196,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The atmosphere contributed 43% of the nitrogen (N) and 10% of the phosphorus (P) that was added during the year. The 1975–76 atmospheric loading rate of total N to this area (11 kg/ha/yr) was one of the highest found to date in the United States. N was conserved more efficiently than P in the tributary drainage basins. Of the N and P that fell annually on the watersheds under study, 2 to 37% of the N and 31 to 84% of the P was carried with runoff to the lake. From a basin where ditching and clear-cutting occurred, water, P, silica (SiO2), N, and sodium were lost at higher rates than from five other basins. Most of the N in bulk atmospheric samples (23%) and tributary waters (56%) was dissolved organic N, a form of N not often measured.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/S0380-1330(83)71912-X","usgsCitation":"Manny, B.A., and Owens, R., 1983, Additions of nutrients and major ions by the atmosphere and tributaries to nearshore waters of northwestern Lake Huron: Journal of Great Lakes Research, v. 9, no. 3, p. 403-420, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0380-1330(83)71912-X.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"403","endPage":"420","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258385,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":258381,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0380-1330(83)71912-X","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","otherGeospatial":"Lake Huron","volume":"9","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e6efe4b0c8380cd4772d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Manny, Bruce A. 0000-0002-4074-9329 bmanny@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4074-9329","contributorId":3699,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manny","given":"Bruce","email":"bmanny@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":354676,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Owens, R.W.","contributorId":7645,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Owens","given":"R.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":354677,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Stocking in tailwaters accounted for 6.9 million or 3.3% of the total. In the South, 32.3% of all salmonids were stocked in tailwaters. Percentages stocked in tailwaters were lower in the West (1.8%), Midwest (1.5%), and Northeast (0.5%) because natural trout water is abundant in these regions. The rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was the salmonid most commonly stocked in tailwaters, composing 95% of the fish 150 mm long or longer and 75% of the fish shorter than 150 mm. Nationally, tailwaters were more likely than other waters to be stocked with fish of the larger size.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Fisheries","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"Philadelphia, PA","doi":"10.1577/1548-8446(1983)008<0005:NSATSO>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Swink, W.D., 1983, Nonmigratory salmonids and tailwaters - a survey of stocking practices in the United States: Fisheries, v. 8, no. 3, p. 5-9, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8446(1983)008<0005:NSATSO>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"5","endPage":"9","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":263417,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8446(1983)008<0005:NSATSO>2.0.CO;2"},{"id":263418,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50e0a995e4b0fec3206ef383","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Swink, William D.","contributorId":60586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swink","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":355754,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) was observed nearly 50 times as often in waters off eastern and western Florida as in the western Gulf of Mexico. Loggerheads were present year round but the frequency of sightings in the winter months was lower than at other seasons. The effects of such anticholinesterases on plasma LH concentrations were examined in male mice (Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis) intubated with water (OW) or acephate (50 and 100 mg/kg) and sacrificed after 4 h. Brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was inhibited by 45 and 56%, and basal LH levels were reduced by 29 and 25% in mice receiving the 2 doses of acephate. Responsiveness to LHRH did not appear to be affected 4 h after intubation with 100 mg/kg acephate, as 5 ug/kg LHRH ip evoked a comparable rise in plasma LH after 30 min (2.4 and 3.6 fold) in OW-control and treated mice. Subchronic dietary exposure to 0, 25, 100, and 400 ppm acephate for 5 days resulted in a dose-dependent decline in brain AChE activity (23, 42, and 57%), but did not affect LH concentration or the weights of testes and seminal vesicles. These findings suggest that acute exposure to organophosphorus insecticides may impair reproductive function by altering LH secretion.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"American Zoologist","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Robbins, C., 1983, Fifty-ninth Christmas Bird Count. 176. Fish samples from this site have consistently contained elevated levels of DDE since 1968. Surveys were made in 1976, 1978, and 1979 to determine the extent of organochlorine pesticide contamination in fishes and birds of the area. Freshwater fishes of the Arroyo Colorado, a major waterway traversing the lower Rio Grande Valley, were highly contaminated with DDE and toxaphene residues compared to samples from other areas in the Valley; both DDE and toxaphene ranged up to 31.5 ppm wet weight in whole-fish composite samples. In addition, median DDE residues in fish-eating bird carcasses from this area ranged up to 34 ppm wet weight, and 81 ppm in individual specimens. The levels of contaminants detected in fishes and birds were within, or above, the range producing adverse effects in certain species. The major sources of contamination to the Arroyo Colorado system likely stem from past and present use of persistent pesticides on surrounding croplands, and possibly from an abandoned pesticide plant at Mission, Texas.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Southwestern Naturalist","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"White, D.H., Mitchell, C.A., Kennedy, H., Krynitsky, A.J., and Ribick, M.A., 1983, Elevated DDE and toxaphene residues in fishes and birds reflect local contamination in the lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas: Southwestern Naturalist, v. 28, no. 3, p. 325-333.","productDescription":"325-333","startPage":"325","endPage":"333","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197768,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":18152,"rank":200,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3670793","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"28","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605f2a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"White, Donald H.","contributorId":97868,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335432,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mitchell, C. Here, we consider it a distinct habitat (sensu Fretwell 1972), i.e. fitness is relatively homogeneous among ducks within the MAV but different from that of ducks in other such habitats. We analyzed recovery distributions of Mallards banded preseason (July-September 1950-1980) to test hypotheses concerning the effects of winter temperatures, precipitation, and population levels on Mallard winter distribution. When two groups of years that comprised extremes of warm and cold winter weather were compared, recovery distributions of all four age and sex classes (adult males and females, young males and females) differed significantly; recoveries were located farther south in cold years. Recovery distributions also differed between wet and dry years in the MAV for all groups except adult males, higher proportions of recoveries of adult females and of young males and females occurring in the MAV during wet winters. Although differences in continental Mallard population size were associated with differences in recovery distributions only of adult males and young females, the proportion of young males and of all young Mallards recovered in the MAV increased during years of low populations. We conclude that temperature, water conditions, and population size affect the habitat suitability of Mallard wintering areas and that Mallards exhibit considerable flexibility in winter distribution associated with these factors.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","doi":"10.1093/auk/100.4.932","usgsCitation":"Nichols, J., Reinecke, K.J., and Hines, J., 1983, Factors affecting the distribution of mallards wintering in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley: The Auk, v. 100, no. 4, p. 932-946, https://doi.org/10.1093/auk/100.4.932.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"932","endPage":"946","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194342,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Mississippi Alluvial Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.80897122290081,\n              37.02911027531273\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.54520380958651,\n              37.043009177908274\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.39395693972232,\n              31.479698473241413\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.55513858052093,\n              29.74347310551012\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.56136474185767,\n              29.562294305177275\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.74351595623818,\n              30.975273673093213\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.14208473594192,\n              33.836303235844056\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.80897122290081,\n              37.02911027531273\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"100","issue":"4","publicComments":"This publication received an award for Outstanding Publication from the Southeastern Section of The Wildlife Society","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a05e4b07f02db5f87e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nichols, James D. jnichols@usgs.gov","contributorId":139087,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nichols","given":"James D.","email":"jnichols@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":334781,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reinecke, Kenneth J.","contributorId":87275,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reinecke","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":334783,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hines, James E. jhines@usgs.gov","contributorId":3506,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hines","given":"James E.","email":"jhines@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":334782,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The freshwater tidal river is essentially devoid of plants and only very sparse populations remain in the mesohaline section of the estuary. Present plant populations are largely confined to the transition-zone region where salinity instability at the fresh-to-brackish water interface is believed to reduce biotic stress on submersed vegetation. Many factors may be implicated in the loss of vegetation over major regions of the tidal Potomac River; however, long-term conditions of excessive nutrients appear to be primarily responsible for the present distribution.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Aquatic Botany","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","doi":"10.1016/0304-3770(83)90100-6","collaboration":"2875_Haramis.pdf","usgsCitation":"Haramis, G., and Carter, V., 1983, Distribution of submersed aquatic macrophytes in the tidal Potomac River: Aquatic Botany, v. 15, no. 1, p. 65-79, https://doi.org/10.1016/0304-3770(83)90100-6.","productDescription":"65-79","startPage":"65","endPage":"79","numberOfPages":"15","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193394,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":17635,"rank":200,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0304-3770(83)90100-6","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"15","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db634e3a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Haramis, G.M.","contributorId":101212,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haramis","given":"G.M.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":334881,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carter, V.","contributorId":61115,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carter","given":"V.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":334880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Bellrose (1959) indicated that between 2 and 3% of waterfowl populations may be lost yearly to lead poisoning. Incidence of lead shot in waterfowl and estimates of mortality from lead poisoning have decreased slightly (Trost 1980) or not at all (Longcore et al 1982) in local areas since 1976, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designated certain wetland areas in 32 states as steel shot zones. Studies in specific areas do not give a complete national picture, but do point to remaining problems. To test this hypothesis, adult black ducks (Anas rubripes) were provided various regimens of fresh or salt (1.5% NaCl) water before, during, and after ingestion of mash containing 21 ppm fenthion. Ducks were bled by jugular venipuncture after I, 7. and 12 days of treatment, and were then killed. Brain and salt gland acetylcholinesterase activities were substantially inhibited (44-61% and 14-36%) by fenthion. However, salt gland weight and Na + -K + -ATPase activity, and plasma Na + , CI- , and osmolality, were uniformly elevated in all groups receiving salt water including those ingesting fenthion. In a second study, salt gland Na + -K + -ATPase activity in mallards (A. platyrhynchos) was not affected after in vitro incubation with either fenthion or fenthion oxon at concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 400 ?M, but was reduced in the presence of 40 and 400 ?M DDE (positive control). These findings suggest that environmentally realistic concentrations of organophosphorus insecticides do not markedly affect osmoregulatory function in adult black ducks.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","doi":"10.1016/0048-3575(83)90030-5","usgsCitation":"Rattner, B., Fleming, W.J., and Murray, H.C., 1983, Osmoregulatory function in ducks following ingestion of the organophosphorus insecticide fenthion: Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology, v. 20, no. 2, p. 246-255, https://doi.org/10.1016/0048-3575(83)90030-5.","productDescription":"246-255","startPage":"246","endPage":"255","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":269825,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0048-3575(83)90030-5"},{"id":194340,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"20","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae5e4b07f02db68a57c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rattner, Barnett A. 0000-0003-3676-2843","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3676-2843","contributorId":95843,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rattner","given":"Barnett A.","affiliations":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":334770,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fleming, W.
