Four forms (three ichnogenera and four ichnospecies) are new and represent fodinichnia and domichnia of oligochaete worms, an insect or spider, an unknown vertebrate (probably a mammal), and domichnia of an unidentified organism. Other potential trace makers of the ichnofauna include insects, mollusks, and decapods. </p><p>In contrast to an Egyptian Oligocene fluvial ichnofauna produced largely by animals that burrowed in stream channel deposits, the Willwood assemblage is principally of flood-plain origin. Though the ichnofauna occurs in a variety of paleosol types, most of the fossils are restricted in distribution to specific sediment and soil types and, within paleosols, to specific identifiable horizons. Species grouped into surface, intermediate and deep water categories based on δ</span><sup>18</sup><span>O values provide evidence of major changes in water-mass stratification, and individual species abundances indicate low frequency cool-warm oscillations. These data suggest that relatively stable climatic phases with minor cool-warm oscillations of ∼0.5 m.y. frequency are separated by rapid cooling events during middle Eocene to early Oligocene time.</span></p><p><span>Five major climatic phases are evident in the water-mass stratification between middle Eocene through Oligocene time. Phase changes occur at P14/P15, P15/P16, P20/P21 and P21/P22 Zone boundaries and are marked by major faunal turnovers, rapid cooling in the isotope record, hiatuses and changes in the eustatic sea level. A general cooling trend between middle Eocene to early late Oligocene is indicated by the successive replacement of warm middle Eocene surface water species by cooler late Eocene intermediate water species and still cooler Oligocene intermediate and deep water species. Increased water-mass stratification in the latest Eocene (P17), indicated by the coexistence of surface, intermediate and deep dwelling species groups, suggest that increased thermal gradients developed between the equator and poles nearly coincident with the development of the psychrosphere. The deposition of the precursors of petroleum, gas, oil shale, coal, phosphate, barite, Cu-Pb-Zn sulfides, and uranium begins with erosion of uplifted areas, and the consequent input of abundant nutrients and solute loads into swamps and tectonic lakes. Hot springs and volcanism add other nutrients and solutes. The resulting high biological productivity creates oxidized/reduced interfaces, and anoxic and H</span><sub>2</sub><span>S-rich bottom waters which preserves metal-bearing organic tissues and horizons. In the depositional phases, the fine-grained lake deposits are in contact with coarse-grained beach, delta, river, talus, and alluvial fan deposits. Earthquake-induced turbidites also are common coarse-grained deposits of rift lakes.</span></p><p><span>Postdepositional processes in rifts include high heat flow and a resulting concentration of the organic and metallic components that were dispersed throughout the lakebeds. Postdepositional faulting brings organic- and metal-rich sourcebeds in contact with coarse-grained host and reservoir rocks. These can be separated with a strong anion-exchange resin (Dowex 1 × 8; 100–200 mesh, acetate form) in a 10 cm × 7 mm column. Samples are filtered and acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid (1 ml per 100 ml of sample) at the sample site. Five ml of the acidified sample are used for the separation. At this acidity, As(III) passes through the acetate-form resin, and As(V) is retained. As(V) is eluted by passage of 0.12</span><i>M</i><span>&nbsp;hydrochloric acid through the column (resulting in conversion of the resin back into the chloride form). Samples are collected in 5-ml portions up to a total of 20 ml. The arsenic concentration in each portion is determined by graphite-furnace atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. The first two fractions give the As(III) concentration and the last two the As(V) concentration. This report, one in a series covering the coal provinces nationwide, presents information thematically by describing single hydrologic topics through the use of brief texts and accompanying maps, graphs, or other illustrations. The summation of the topical discussions provides a description of the hydrology of the area. Area 54, in north-central Colorado and south-central Wyoming, is 1 of 20 hydrologic reporting areas of the Northern Great Plains and Rocky Mountain coal provinces. Part of the Southern Rocky Mountains and Wyoming Basin physiographic provinces, the 8,380-square-mile area is one of contrasting geology, topography, and climate. This results in contrasting hydrologic characteristics. The major streams, the North Platte, Laramie, and Medicine Bow Rivers, and their principal tributaries, all head in granitic mountains and flow into and through sedimentary basins between the mountain ranges. Relief averages 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Precipitation in the mountains may exceed 40 inches annually, much of it during the winter, which produces deep snowpacks. Snowmelt in spring and summer provides most streamflow. Precipitation in the basins averages 10 to 16 inches annually, insufficient for sustained streamflow; thus, streams originating in the basins are ephemeral. Streamflow quality is best in the mountains where dissolved-solids concentrations generally are least. These concentrations increase as streams flow through sedimentary basins. The increases are mainly natural, but some may be due to irrigation in and adjacent to the flood plains. In the North Platte River, dissolved-solids concentrations are usually less than 300 milligrams per liter; in the Laramie and the Medicine Bow Rivers, the concentrations may average 500 to 850 milligrams per liter. However, water-quality stations on the Laramie and the Medicine Bow Rivers are farther removed from the mountain sources than the stations in the North Platte drainage. Because of the semiarid climate of the basins, soils are not adequately leached. Consequently, flow in ephemeral streams usually has a larger concentration of dissolved solids than that in perennial streams, averaging 1,000 to 1,600 milligrams per liter. Aquifers containing usable ground water are combined into three groups: (1) consolidated and unconsolidated non-coal-bearing Quaternary and Upper Tertiary deposits, (2) Mesozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, and (3) Lower Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks containing coal. These aquifers are used for municipal, domestic, irrigation, and stock supplies. Well yields range from about 5 to 1,000 gallons per minute, and depend on type of aquifer, saturated thickness, and degree of fracturing. The best quality ground water usually comes from the non-coal-bearing Quaternary and Upper Tertiary rocks or the Mesozoic and Paleozoic rocks; often it is dominated by calcium and bicarbonate ions. The coal-bearing formations have a large variability in water chemistry; dominant ions may be bicarbonate or sulfate and sodium, calcium, or magnesium. Dissolved-solids concentrations are generally larger than in the former two groups. The U.S. Geological Survey operates a network of hydrologic stations to observe the streamflow and groundwater conditions. This network currently includes 31 surface-water stations and 35 observation wells; information is available for many other sites observed in the past. Data available include rate of flow, water levels, and water quality; much of the data are available in published reports or from computer storage through the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) or the National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTORE). This report presents an evaluation of the water resources and potential effects of water-resource developments. Most streams in the county have small drainage basins and minimal flow. Streamflow is variable with the base flow occurring from November to May. The Manattee River and its largest tributary, the Braden River, are the principal sources of public supplies. Surface water is generally of good quality and less mineralized than ground water except in the tidally affected and coastal area. The principal aquifers in the county are the surficial, minor artesian, and the Floridan. The Floridan aquifer is the major source of irrigation water in the county. The minor artesian aquifer is a highly developed source of water for small rural supplies. Withdrawals of 20 to 50 million gallons per fay from the Floridan aquifer since the 1950 's have caused declines in the potentiometric surface of about 20 to 50 feet. The quality of ground water is good except in the coastal and southern parts of the county. Water in the Floridan aquifer is generally more mineralized than the other aquifers, generally increasing in mineral content with depth and from the northeast towards the southwest. These lineaments and fracture traces may indicate that solution enlarged vertical fractures in the limestone and dolonite aquifers underlie most of the county. The use of lineament and fracture-trace maps in selecting bedrock-drilling sites results in a significant increase in the number of usable sites. Bedrock wells drilled on or near mapped lineaments and fracture traces have a higher average yield than veils drilled into interfracture areas. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Parts of Decatur County and several adjacent counties are economically restricted by inadequate water supplies. The Greensburg Municipal Water Works, supplying 35 percent of the county's population, obtains 25 percent of its water from six wells in Greensburg. The remaining 75 percent is pumped from the Flat Rock River. This water is piped 8.25 miles and lifted 183 feet to the treatment station. Although the Flatrock River has adequate flow to supply Greensburg's water needs, a ground-water supply can probably be developed nearer the treatment plant.</p>\n<p>Pleistocene till covers most of the nearly horizontal bedrock. Although averaging about 50 feet thick, this unconsolidated unit does not seem to inhibit the mapping of lineaments and fracture traces. Bedrock is middle Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, and shale. Two sequences of limestone and dolomite, separated by a thin shale unit, constitute the principal aquifer. The extremely variable well yields from this aquifer indicate that the bedrock permeability is also variable.</p>\n<p>Well placement is important in a fractured bedrock terrane, as fractures are a principal source of water to the well. Here, the most productive bedrock wells are at the mapped intersection of two or more fracture traces or lineaments and at the lowest local altitude. Dye-cloud centroid traveltimes ranged from approximately 120 hours at high discharge to 410 hours at flows approaching 95 percentile duration. Longitudinal dispersion coeficients ranged from 21.3 to 76.7 square meters per second. In the 37.2 kilometer unsteady flow reach from Gulf Island Dam to Prejepscot Dam, the concept of mass flow versus time was applied to relate centroid traveltime to average discharge at five sites. This information was used to develop traveltime versus discharge relationships, traveltime versus distance relationships, and longitudinal dispersion coefficients. In Gulf Island Pond, a 70.4 million cubic meter impoundment, three complete dye clouds were traced. The range of observed centroid traveltime through the pound was 110 hours at a mean discharge of 84 cubic meters per second to 260 hours at 59 cubic meters per second. Traveltimes are dependent upon reservoir stratification and mixing as well as discharge. During 1981, inflowing dye-tagged water at 19.0 and 19.5 degrees Celsius was observed to seek its own temperature density level during movement along the thalweg.
