This report presents an evaluation of the water resources and potential effects of water-resource developments. Most streams in the county have small drainage basins and minimal flow. Streamflow is variable with the base flow occurring from November to May. The Manattee River and its largest tributary, the Braden River, are the principal sources of public supplies. Surface water is generally of good quality and less mineralized than ground water except in the tidally affected and coastal area. The principal aquifers in the county are the surficial, minor artesian, and the Floridan. The Floridan aquifer is the major source of irrigation water in the county. The minor artesian aquifer is a highly developed source of water for small rural supplies. Withdrawals of 20 to 50 million gallons per fay from the Floridan aquifer since the 1950 's have caused declines in the potentiometric surface of about 20 to 50 feet. The quality of ground water is good except in the coastal and southern parts of the county. Water in the Floridan aquifer is generally more mineralized than the other aquifers, generally increasing in mineral content with depth and from the northeast towards the southwest. In this way, water deficiencies occurring during the annual dry season can be offset by surplus water obtained during the wet season and injected underground. Most of south Florida is underlain by several deep, confined, carbonate waterbearing zones which might be suitable for freshwater storage. These zones are in the Avon Park, Ocala, Suwannee, Tampa, and Hawthorn Formations. Experimental freshwater injection systems have been operated at five locations with promising, but not fully definitive, results. A determination of the feasibility of freshwater injection at a selected site begins with an assessment of the local geologic suitability. Verification of feasibility, however, requires injection and recovery tests to be performed at the site. Recovery efficiency, a measure of the success of the operation, is the amount of potable water, expressed as a percentage of the volume injected, which can be recovered before its salinity, or the concentration of other chemical constituents present in the native aquifer water, increases to the point that the recovered water is no longer useable.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834214","usgsCitation":"Merritt, M.L., Meyer, F., Sonntag, W.H., and Fitzpatrick, D., 1983, Subsurface storage of freshwater in south Florida: A prospectus: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4214, iv, 69 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834214.","productDescription":"iv, 69 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":393273,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35857.htm"},{"id":54535,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4214/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158858,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4214/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -82.705078125,\n 24.966140159912975\n ],\n [\n -79.6728515625,\n 24.966140159912975\n ],\n [\n -79.6728515625,\n 27.15692045688088\n ],\n [\n -82.705078125,\n 27.15692045688088\n ],\n [\n -82.705078125,\n 24.966140159912975\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db6999b3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Merritt, M. The aquifer overlies a thick clay layer at an average depth of 65 feet. The water table is about 10 feet below land surface in the western part of the Base and about 25 feet below land surface in the eastern part. A ground-water divide cuts diagonally across the Base from northwest to southeast. South of the divide, ground water flows to the Au Sable River; north of the divide, it flows to Van Etten Creek and Van Etten Lake. Mathematical models were used to aid in calculating rates of groundwater flow. Rates range from about 0.8 feet per day in the eastern part of the Base to about 0.3 feet per day in the western part. Models also were used as an aid in making decisions regarding purging of contaminated water from the aquifer.

In 1977, trichloroethylene was detected in the Air Force Base water-supply system. It had leaked from a buried storage tank near Building 43 in the southeastern part of the Base and moved northeastward under the influence of the natural ground-water gradient and the pumping of Base water-supply wells. In the most highly contaminated part of the plume, concentrations are greater than 1,000 micrograms per liter. Current purge pumping is removing some of the trichloroethylene, and seems to have arrested its eastward movement. Pumping of additional purge wells could increase the rate of removal.

Trichloroethylene has also been detected in ground water in the vicinity of the Base alert apron, where a plume from an unknown source extends northeastward off Base. A smaller, less well-defined area of contamination also occurs just north of the larger plume. Trichloroethylene, identified near the waste-treatment plant, seepage lagoons, and the northern landfill area, is related to activities and operations in these areas. Dichloroethylene and trichloroethylene occur in significant quantities westward of Building 43, upgradient from the major spill site. Benzene, indicative of ground-water contamination by a fuel substance, occurs in an area northeast of the bulk-fuel storage area. Geochemical arguments, including reaction mechanisms, are used to support these findings. Carbon-, hydrogen-, and oxygen-isotope data show that much of the recharge in the area occurred during late Wisconsin time. Absence of ground-water recharge prior to late Pleistocene is considered to indicate that either climatic conditions were unfavorable for recharge or that ground-water velocities were such that they transported this earlier recharge away from the study aea. These cones of depression are delineated on detailed potentiometric surface maps produced from water-level data collected in the field in 1978. Water levels for 1978 are compared with those from 1970 or 1973, and water-level changes are evaluated and compared with hydrographs from observation wells. The Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system is divided into regionally extensive lower and upper aquifers. These aquifers have large cones of depression centered in Camden, Middlesex, and Monmouth Counties. Water levels declined 5 to 20 feet in these areas between 1973 and 1978. Deep cones of depression in coastal Monmouth and Ocean Counties in the Englishtown and Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifers are similar in location and shape, due to a good hydraulic connection between these aquifers. Water levels declined 2 to 31 feet in the Englishtown aquifer and 12 to 26 feet in the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer between 1973 and 1978. Water levels in the Atlantic City 800-foot sand of the Kirkwood Formation define an extensive elongated cone of depression centered near Margate, Atlantic County. Head changes ranged from a decline of 4 feet to a recovery of 9 feet during 1970-78. The lowest heads in the Cohansey Sand were about 26 feet below sea level at Cape May, Cape May County, and less than 0.5 miles from salty ground water. It comprises a total of about 400 square miles in Polk, Benton, and Marion Counties. Tertiary consolidated rocks underlie the entire area. These rocks include marine sandstone, siltstone, shale, tuff, basalt, and gabbro. In the lowlands, the consolidated rocks are overlain by unconsolidated deposits of clay, silt, sand, and gravel which reach a maximum thickness of about 125 feet locally. The consolidated rocks generally are poor water-bearing formations and yield only small quantities of ground water to wells. From 1956 to 1976, about 6 percent of all wells completed in basalt and 14 percent of those completed in marine sedimentary rocks were reported to be \"dry holes.\" The median yield of wells completed in the consolidated rocks was less than 10 gallons per minute, and the maximum reported yield was 200 gallons per minute. Shallow ground water in the consolidated rocks is generally of good quality, but with increasing depth in these rocks the water contains increasing concentrations of dissolved minerals. It is estimated that about 5 percent of all the wells completed in the consolidated rocks yield poor-quality water. The best water-bearing units are sand-and-gravel beds in the unconsolidated deposits. Near Independence, the sand-and-gravel beds are hydraulically continuous and exceed a saturated thickness of 10 feet over an area covering several tens of square miles chiefly within the Willamette River flood plain. Properly constructed wells in these deposits can generally obtain yields of 100 to 500 gallons per minute, and large quantities of additional ground water can be developed from this source. Outside the above area, sand-and-gravel beds generally are less than 10 feet thick, lenticular in shape, local in extent, and generally yield less than 30 gallons per minute to wells. Sand-and-gravel beds probably are absent in the Baskett Slough drainage basin, in the E. E. Wilson Wildlife Management area, and in the Luckiamute and Little Luckiamute River valleys upstream from the U.S. Highway 99W bridge.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80678","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with The United States Department of the Interior, Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Gonthier, J.B., 1983, Groundwater resources of the Dallas-Monmouth area, Polk, Benton, and Marion Counties, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-678, Report: vi, 50 p.; 2 Plates: 23.18 x 34.68 inches and 18.78 x 12.85 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80678.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 50 p.; 2 Plates: 23.18 x 34.68 inches and 18.78 x 12.85 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405072,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11734.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":405018,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405017,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141630,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":405016,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","county":"Benton County, Marion County, Polk County","otherGeospatial":"Dallas-Monmouth area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.12927246093751,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.12927246093751,\n              44.97451370563983\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.97451370563983\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a94e4b07f02db6589aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gonthier, Joseph B.","contributorId":74350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gonthier","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":159240,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The 410-foot well penetrates a series of very dense basaltic lava flows of the Hana Formation. At an elevation of 10 feet above mean sea level, the well penetrated a water-bearing zone of permeable basaltic rock. Water from this zone had a head of about 76 feet above sea level. In October of 1980, the well was pump tested for 9 hours at various discharge rates up to 350 gallons per minute with a maximum drawdown of about 12 feet. Based on the test data, the well should produce water at a rate of 200 gallons per minute with a drawdown of less than 3 feet. The water level in the well was continuously monitored from October 1980 to mid-November 1981, during which period a maximum decline of 20 feet was recorded. Water level fluctuations in the well can be correlated to the flow in nearby Palikea Stream. The long-term water level in the well should stabilize at about 75 feet above sea level. Water quality was excellent. The total dissolved-solids content was 49 milligrams per liter and the chloride content was 4.2 milligrams per liter.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834066","usgsCitation":"Souza, W.R., 1983, Exploratory drilling and aquifer testing at the Kipahulu District, Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4066, v, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834066.","productDescription":"v, 26 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":58671,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123551,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4066/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":411586,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35701.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Haleakala National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.25717163085938,\n              20.580081709180345\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.01547241210938,\n              20.580081709180345\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.01547241210938,\n              20.78693059257028\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.25717163085938,\n              20.78693059257028\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.25717163085938,\n              20.580081709180345\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ffe4b07f02db5f78f4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Souza, W. Some irrigation water used in this area obtained from surface sources, but a significant amount is obtained from wells. The principal aquifer in the area is the Columbia River Basalt Group. Wells in the basalt are commonly drilled to depths of 500 to 1,200 ft and many produce more than 1,000 gal/min. A cooperative ground-water modeling study by the U.S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department has resulted in the compilation of data from drillers logs and well inspections for wells completed in the basalt aquifer. Water-level measurements have been made in some wells in the area since the 1950's. The wells with longest periods of record are those that are part of a Statewide network of observation wells measured by the U. S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department. The data collected included a reconnaissance evaluation of specific conductance, a 24-hour sampling of air and water temperature at 6 sites, and periodic measurements of water levels, temperature, and specific conductance at 57 sites.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83139","usgsCitation":"Burns, A.W., 1983, Hydrologic data from the Tamarack Wildlife Area and vicinity, Logan County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-139, 126 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83139.","productDescription":"126 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140649,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0139/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35719,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0139/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35720,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0139/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35721,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0139/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1be4b07f02db6076dc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burns, Alan W.","contributorId":41419,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burns","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157177,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
