Principal purposes of the program are to provide a means for participating water laboratories to: (1) identify analytical problem areas; (2) ascertain the accuracy and precision of common water analyses and analytical methods and; (3) provide reference samples for continuing quality assurance testing. Participation in this continuing quality assurance program is mandatory for all domestic laboratories providing water analysis data for Survey use. Analytical data submitted by the participating laboratories that analyzed the respective reference samples distributed in October 1982 are presented. Relative performance ratings achieved by the laboratories for each determination and statistical evaluation of the data are given in 14 tables. The volcanic islands and some of the coral islets are scattered in an 820-square-mile lagoon enclosed by a 125-mile long barrier reef. Moen, although not the largest, is by far the most developed island and is the adminstrative, commercial, educational, and transporation center of the islands. Monthly rainfall records for most years are available since 1903. Rainfall-runoff comparisons show that about half the annual rainfall runs off as surface water into Truk Lagoon. Flow characteristics of the major streams, based on more than 11 years of record, are provided and the application of data for possible use in the design of reservoirs and rain catchments is included. Historical and present development of all water sources is given. The chemical analyses of surface and ground water on Moen, with the exception of water from well 9, show the good quality of the water sources. This report summarizes all hydrologic data collected and provides interpretations that can be used for development and management of the water resources. In the study area 23,700 acre-feet of ground water from the basin-fill deposits was used to irrigate more than 5,000 acres in 1981. Surface water is not a reliable source for irrigation or public supply. Ground water enters the area as underflow from the north and east and as recharge from the mountains, moves through basin-margin sediments, around the basin-center clays, and exits the area to the west beneath the Rio Sonoyta. Ground-water withdrawals in the upper Rio Sonoyta area do not appear to have an effect on water levels in the Papago Farms-Great Plain area. Depth to water ranges from 500 feet near the southern boundary to 150 feet in the center of study area. About 10 million acre-feet of recoverable ground water is stored in the upper 400 feet of the aquifer. Storage is being depleted at a rate of 19,000 acre-feet per year. The ground water is a sodium and bicarbonate type and has an anomalously high content of arsenic and fluoride. Since that time, Spirit Lake has had no natural outlet and its lake level and contents have increased significantly. Erosion at the crest of the debris dam on the surface of the blockage and recent studies of theblockage stratigraphy and soil properties showing that the effective crest elevation is lower than the surface crest have led to concern that the lake may someday breach through or spill over the top of the blockage. A study was made by the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the extent of inundation that might result downstream in the Toutle and Cowlitz Rivers if a hypothetical breach should occur and generate a mudflow flood of catastrophic proportions. A hypothetical breach of Spirit Lake produced a hypothetical mudflow hydrograph with a peak discharge of 2.65 million cu ft/s and a sediment concentration of 65 percent by volume at Camp Baker on the North Fork Toutle River. Elevations determined by the hydraulic routing of the mudflow were used to prepare inundation maps, indicating depths of inundation to be about 60 feet at Castle Rock and Lexington; 30-40 feet at Toutle, Toutle Lake at Silver Lake, Kelson, and Longview; and 15-20 feet at Toledo. Travel times for the peak elevation were estimated to be about 15 hours to Kid Valley on the North Fork Toutle River, 21 hours to Castle Rock, 22 hours to Toledo, and 23 hours to Kelso and Longview on the Cowlitz River. Saturated thickness of the Ogallala ranged from 0 to about 350 feet on the downthrown side of the Crooked Creek-Fowler fault and from 0 to about 120 feet on the upthrown side. Ground-water withdrawal was calculated by two methods. The time-discharge method computed withdrawal of about 81,000 acre-feet during 1980 and about 58,000 acre-feet during 1981. The irrigation-requirement method computed withdrawal of about 121,000 acre-feet during 1980 and about 131,000 acre-feet during 1981. Results from the irrigation-requirement method are probably closer to the actual amount of ground-water withdrawal because of problems encountered when applying the time-dischargemethod. Water-level declines between 1939 and 1981 ranged from about 10 to 50 feet. Water withdrawal from the Ogallala aquifer depleted the volume of water in storage by about 688,000 acre-feet (8 percent) during this same period. If withdrawals continue to the point where the water table drops below the top of the bedrock surface on the upthrown side of the Crooked Creek-Fowler fault, base flow in the Arkansas River could cease. Perennial streams are identified for the entire State of Arkansas with the exception of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Also presented are the 7-day, 10-year low flow values at continuous-record and low-flow partial-record stations statewide. Perennial streams are defined in this report as having 7-day, 10-year low flows greater than zero. The perennial stream drainage was delineated using data from continuous-record and low-flow partial-record stations, and reconnaissance-site observations. The reconnaissance was conducted during the unusually dry summer of 1980. In analysis, the State was divided into hydrologic regions; they were used in conjunction with index stations to establish the recurrence intervals of flow observed, during the reconnaissance. When necessary, relations were developed by region to adjust observed flow to 10-year recurrence interval flows. The increase in New England and New York occurred primarily before the mid-1950's. Since the mid1960's, there has been no significant change in the acidity of precipitation in this region; however, sulfate concentrations have decreased and nitrate concentrations may have increased. The time of initial acidification in Southeastern Canada is not known because of a lack of historical data. In the Southeastern United States, the evaluation of whether precipitation has been acidified is complicated by meager data. The available data show that precipitation is more acidic than would be expected for sites unaffected by anthropogenic emissions. In addition, comparison of recent data with the meager historical data suggests, but does not unambiguously prove, increased acidification since the 1950's. In the Western United States, available data indicate that precipitation at individual sites has been acidified by anthropogenic emissions. The acidification generally has been attributable to localized sources, and the time of initial acidification is undefined. \r\n\r\nAcidification of lakes and streams in the Northeastern United States has occurred in a time frame compatible with the hypothesis that acidification of precipitation was the cause. The acidification of surface waters appears to have occurred before the mid- to late 1960's. In Southeastern Canada, the best-documented cases of acidified lakes point to localized sources of acidic emissions as the cause. Sparse evidence of recent regional acidification of lakes and streams exists, but evidence for acidification of precipitation as the cause is largely lacking. In the Southeastern United States, most data on acidification of surface waters are ambiguous, and in the West, most of the data reflect local conditions. As much as 0.34 m of vertical separation has been observed along a 5.2-km segment of the Kern Front fault, the structural barrier separating the Kern Front oil field on the west from the Kern River field to the east. Similar separations of as much as 0.15 m and 0.32 m, respectively, have also been identified along the surface traces of two en echelon faults between the Premier and Enas areas of the Poso Creek oil field and the fault that defines the southeast flank of the Premier area. The measured height changes are based on both unadjusted observed elevations and minimally constrained adjusted elevations developed from repeated control levelings referred to a relatively stable local bench mark; measurement error in the reported vertical movements probably is less than 0.05 m. Differential subsidence of at least 0.31 m (1903-68) and 0.05 m (1926/27/30/31-59) has occurred within the Kern Front and Fruitvale oil fields, respectively; subsidence of as much as 0.33 m (1903-53) and 0.19 m (1931-63) has also been measured along the north edge of the Premier area of the Poso Creek oil field and the south edge of the Main area of the Mount Poso field, respectively. Differential uplift of as much as 0.11 m and 0.13 m occurred within and immediately north of the Kern River oil field between 1903 and 1968, and similar uplift of as much as 0.19 m was measured along the north edge of the Dominion area of the Mount Poso field between 1931 and 1963. </p><p>Differential subsidence within the Kern Front and Fruitvale oil fields and along the edges of the Poso Creek and Mount Poso fields is attributable to subsurface compaction owing to fluid withdrawal; absence of subsidence within the much larger Kern River field probably is the result of either production from compaction-resistant materials or natural water flooding that has acted to preserve reservoir fluid pressures in the generally shallow producing beds. Contemporary displacements on the Kern Front fault and those along the faults within and adjacent to the Poso Creek oil field are attributable largely or entirely to changes in the subsurface stress regime associated with reservoir compaction; accumulated elastic strain of tectonic derivation conceivably contributed to the development of these displacements. Both lakes are in the Denver metropolitan area and provide a variety of recreational activities, including boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. The projected increase of urban development in the drainage basins of Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes could increase the constituent loads delivered to the lakes. Due to the eutrophic condition of Cherry Creek Lake and the potential eutrophic condition of Chatfield Lake, increased constituent loads could affect the suitability of the lakes for recreation. A monitoring program was started to determine the constituent loads of the drainage basins to both lakes. A network of monitoring stations was established to collect ambient water quality samples, storm runoff water quality samples, precipitation, and stream discharge. In the Cherry Creek basin 12 observation wells were established in the alluvium upgradient from Cherry Creek lake. Water levels and water quality data were collected to determine the quantity and quality of groundwater entering Cherry Creek lake. Data were collected from January through December 1982. The data may be used to evaluate the present and projected impact of urbanization in the drainage basins and the effect of increased constituent loads delivered to Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes. Most wells obtain enough water for individual household needs from unconsolidated, principally glacial and glacioalluvial deposits. In some places, however, wells must be drilled into the underlying bedrock to obtain adequate supplies. It may be possible to develop small community supplies--for individual trailer courts or subdivisions--in areas where yields of 20 gallons per minute or greater are reported for private, domestic wells. Peters Creek is a potential source of surface-water supply, but it would have to be treated to remove glacial silt during summer months. The chemical quality of both ground water and surface water in the area in generally acceptable for most uses. Foundation and excavation conditions, the potential for water pollution from onsite disposal of wastewater through septic tank systems, and the suitability of specific areas for certain types of development may be affected by the following factors: wetlands and areas of shallow ground water underlie about 30 percent of the study area; landslope exceeds 20 percent in about a third of the area; areas of fine-grained, low-permeability sediments are present locally; bedrock is within 25 feet of the land surface in about a third of the area. Drainage areas are shown in tabular form under six headings : station number; stream name, rank, and location; township, range, and section ; county; type of site; and drainage area. A hydrologic study was conducted in the potential lease area in 1981 to describe the existing hydrologic system and to assess potential impacts of surface coal mining on local water resources. The hydrologic data collected from wells, test holes, and springs were used to identify aquifers in the alluvium (Pleistocene and Holocene age) and the Tongue River member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene age). Coal, clinker, and sandstone beds comprise the aquifers in the Tongue River Member. Most streams are ephemeral and flow only as a result of precipitation. The only perennial surface-water flow in the study area is along short reaches downstream from springs. A mine plan for the area is not available; thus, the location of mine cuts, direction and rate of the mine expansion, and duration of mining are unknown. The mining of the Sawyer and Knoblock coal beds in the Tonge River Member would effect ground-water flow in the area. Declines in the potentiometric surface would be caused by dewatering where the mine pits intersect the water table. Wells and springs would be removed in the mine area; however, deeper aquifers are available as replacement sources of water. The chemical quality of the ground water would change after moving through the spoils. The change would be an increase in the concentration of dissolved solids. No calibration of the transient-state model was attempted. Predicted drawdowns with a minimum amount of coal development combined with other kinds of development were as great as 2,000 feet. As much as 300 feet of additional drawdown were simulated for the maximum amount of coal development. Drawdowns near pumping wells are not predicted.
