X-ray fluorescence analysis of 311) salt samples from 10 core holes revealed bromine contents ranging from 11 to 174 ppm. The average concentration, corrected to 100 percent sodium chloride, is approximately 80 ppm. The bromine content of most halite beds increases from the base upward. Variations or 'spikes' in the bromine profile and reversals of the upward increase in bromine are evidenced within several salt beds. Bromine of bed 10 salt zones exhibits a high degree of correlation laterally. No increase in bromine concentration for correlated salt zones was noted from the basin margins to the depositional center in the northeastern part of the study area. A great disparity in salt thickness from the depositional center to the margins suggests stratified lake conditions in which denser, sodium-chloride-saturated bottom brines did not extend to the margins during part of the depositional history of bed 10. \r\n\r\nPaleosalinity trends of Lake Gosiute determined from the bromine distribution include the following: (1) chemically stratified lake conditions with dense, highly saline bottom waters and a fresher water zone above during much of the depositional history of the halites, (2) gradual evaporation of lake waters in a closed basin with resultant upward increase in salinity for most intervals studied, and (3) absence of lateral lake-bottom salinity gradients or postdepositional salt alteration as determined by the lateral constancy of bromine concentrations for correlated bed 10 halite.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83726","usgsCitation":"Higley, D., 1983, Distribution of bromine in bedded halite in the Green River Formation, southwestern Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-726, [2], 52 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83726.","productDescription":"[2], 52 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":108472,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14195.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"14195"},{"id":151496,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48810,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48811,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48812,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48813,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48814,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48815,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48816,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48817,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0726/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db6486cd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Higley, D.K. 0000-0001-8024-9954","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8024-9954","contributorId":90261,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Higley","given":"D.K.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":180707,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Selected wells illustrate the effects that changes in recharge and pumpage have had on the various groundwater resources in the State. Daily mean water levels are shown in hydrographs for 1982. Monthly means are shown for the 10-yr period 1973 and 1982. Mean annual water levels ranged from 10 ft higher to 1 ft lower in 1982 than in 1981. This is a significant reversal of the downward trend of the past few years. Water quality samples are collected periodically throughout Georgia and analyzed as part of areal and regional groundwater studies. Along the coast, chloride concentrations have remained stable in the Savannah area, but invasion of brackish water into the aquifer has increased the chloride concentration at Brunswick. Both lakes are in the Denver metropolitan area and provide a variety of recreational activities, including boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. The projected increase of urban development in the drainage basins of Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes could increase the constituent loads delivered to the lakes. Due to the eutrophic condition of Cherry Creek Lake and the potential eutrophic condition of Chatfield Lake, increased constituent loads could affect the suitability of the lakes for recreation. A monitoring program was started to determine the constituent loads of the drainage basins to both lakes. A network of monitoring stations was established to collect ambient water quality samples, storm runoff water quality samples, precipitation, and stream discharge. In the Cherry Creek basin 12 observation wells were established in the alluvium upgradient from Cherry Creek lake. Water levels and water quality data were collected to determine the quantity and quality of groundwater entering Cherry Creek lake. Data were collected from January through December 1982. The data may be used to evaluate the present and projected impact of urbanization in the drainage basins and the effect of increased constituent loads delivered to Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes. A previously published steady-state finite-difference digital model was converted to a transient-state model by changing boundary conditions and adding storage coefficients. No calibration of the transient-state model was attempted. Predicted drawdowns with a minimum amount of coal development combined with other kinds of development were as great as 2,000 feet. As much as 300 feet of additional drawdown were simulated for the maximum amount of coal development. Drawdowns near pumping wells are not predicted. The data are for 1979 and reflect the pumpage from about 1,100 wells in 485 communities. The distribution and amount of pumpage is estimated to be similar for subsequent years.
\n
Of the water pumped for public supplies, 95 percent comes from two major aquifers--the sand-and-gravel and the sandstone aquifers. Lesser amounts of water come from the Silurian dolomite, which is present onlyl in a narrow band in eastern Wisconsin, and from the generally low-yielding Precambrian basement rock that underlies the entire state.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83931","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Dispersion is pronounced in all the resistivity data above 106 Hz. As water content decreases, resistivity dispersion becomes noticeable at lower frequencies. The resistivity data at all frequencies, however, fit an empirical prediction formula relating observed resistivity to water saturation and resistivity of the saturated sample. The data suggest that the dispersion of resistivity of some earth materials with frequency may be predicted on the basis of curve matching of the data obtained in this investigation with the resistivity of the material at a frequency of 100 Hz or lower. \r\n\r\nThe dispersion of dielectric constant with frequency is pronounced at all frequencies, being more pronounced with increasing water content. The shape of the dispersion curve is dependent on the resistivity of the water in the sample.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83914","usgsCitation":"Eberle, W., 1983, The effects of water content and water resistivity on the dispersion of resistivity and dielectric constant in quartz sand in the frequency range 10^2 to 10^8 Hz: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-914, 35 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83914.","productDescription":"35 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":152883,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0914/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48163,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0914/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65ddee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eberle, W.R.","contributorId":98342,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eberle","given":"W.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179752,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Ground-water resources are sufficient to supply several times the 1978 population. Potential problems associated with increased ground-water development are saltwater encroachment in the coastal areas and septic-tank contamination of shallow aquifers. There are sufficient good-quality surface-water resources to allow for significant expansion of the tribe)s fisheries activities. \r\n\r\nThe tribal well field is the only place where the ground-water system has been stressed) resulting in declining water levels (1,5 feet per year), The well field has a useful life of at least 1.5-20 years, This can be increased by drilling additional wells to expand the present well field, \r\n\r\nInflow of water to the reservation is in the form of precipitation (103 cubic feet per second) ft3/s)) surface-water inflow (13 ft3/s)) and ground-water inflow (4 ft3/s), Outflow is as evapotranspiration (62 ft3/s)) surface-water outflow (40 ft3/s)) and ground-water outflow (18 ft3/s), Total inflow and outflow are equal (120 ft3/s). \r\n\r\nGround water is generally suitable for domestic use without treatment) but a serious quality problem is the presence of coliform bacteria in some shallow wells, High values of turbidity and color and large concentrations of iron and manganese are common problems regarding the esthetic quality of the water, In a few places, large concentrations of chloride and dissolved solids indicate the possibility of saltwater encroachment, but no ongoing trend has been identified, \r\n\r\nSurface waters have been observed to contain undesirably high concentrations of total phosphorus and total and fecal-coliform bacteria) and to have temperatures too high for fish-rearing. In 1980, withdrawals of ground water for municipal, industrial, and military supplies totaled 164,354 acre-feet (203 cubic hectometers) within the El Paso, Fort Bliss, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico metropolitan area, and adjacent areas in Texas and New Mexico. Most of the water, 132,652 acre-feet (164 cubic hectometers), was pumped from the Hueco bolson, the principal aquifer. The Mesilla bolson and Rio Grande alluvium in the lower Mesilla Valley supplied 27,461 and 4,241 acre-feet (34 and 5 cubic hectometers) respectively.
\n
The cumulative 1906 through 1980 withdrawals of ground water from the Hueco bolson metro area total 3.0 million acre-feet (3.7 cubic kilometers)-about 2.2 million acre-feet (2.7 cubic kilometers) has been pumped in the United States and 0.8 million acre-feet (1.0 cubic kilometers) in the Republic of Mexico. These withdrawals have caused water levels to decline about 130 feet (40 meters) in the downtown sections of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. In January 1980 the theoretically recoverable volume of freshwater in storage within the Texas part of the Hueco bolson metro area was estimated at 10.0 million acre-feet (12 cubic kilometers). Dissolved-solids concentrations in recent samples from Hueco bolson wells averaged 642 milligrams per liter in the Texas part of the metropolitan area and 736 milligrams per liter in Ciudad Juarez. Concentrations are increasing at an average-annual rate of about 10 milligrams per liter in Texas and 30 milligrams per liter in Juarez.
\n
Ground water in the lower Mesilla Valley is pumped for municipal and industrial supply and also for supplemental crop irrigation during years of inadequate surface-water supply in the Rio Grande. The 1979-80 withdrawals in the valley averaged about 31,000 acre-feet per year (38 cubic hectometers). Most of the water, about 21,000 to 22,000 acre-feet per year (26 to 27 cubic hectometers), was pumped from shallow, medium depth, and deep wells in the Canutillo field. Some irrigation water used in this area obtained from surface sources, but a significant amount is obtained from wells. The principal aquifer in the area is the Columbia River Basalt Group. Wells in the basalt are commonly drilled to depths of 500 to 1,200 ft and many produce more than 1,000 gal/min. A cooperative ground-water modeling study by the U.S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department has resulted in the compilation of data from drillers logs and well inspections for wells completed in the basalt aquifer. Water-level measurements have been made in some wells in the area since the 1950's. The wells with longest periods of record are those that are part of a Statewide network of observation wells measured by the U. S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department. The well is one of a series of test wells drilled in and near Yucca Mountain adjacent to the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. These investigations are part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations to identify suitable sites for underground storage of high-level radioactive wastes. Test well USW H-6 was drilled to a total depth of 1,220 m. Rocks penetrated are predominantly ash-flow tuffs. Lava was encountered from 877 to 1 ,126 m. The composite static water level is approximately 526 m below land surface. The well was pumped during two periods. Maximum drawdown was about 18 m after pumping for 4,822 min at 28 L/sec, and 12 m after pumping for 2,226 min at 27 L/sec. A borehole flow survey showed that 91% of the water withdrawn from the well came from the depth intervals from 616 to 631 m, and from 777 to 788 m. Conductivity is determined by making field measurements of apparent resisitivity at very low frequencies (0-20 cps), and interpreting the true resistivity of layers at various depths by curve-matching methods. Interpreted resistivity values are converted to corresponding conductivity values which are assumed to be applicable at 10^2 cps, an assumption which is considered valid because the conductivity of rock and soil is nearly constant at frequencies below 10^2 cps. Conductivity is estimated at higher frequencies (up to 10^6 cps) by using statistical correlations of three parameters obtained from laboratory measurements of rock and soil samples: conductivity at 10^2 cps, frequency and conductivity measured over the range 10^2 to 10^6 cps. Conductivity may also be estimated in this frequency range by using field measurements of water content and correlations of laboratory sample measurements of the three parameters: water content, frequency, and conductivity measured over the range 10^2 to 10^6 cps. This method is less accurate because nonrandom variation of ion concentration in natural pore water introduces error. \r\n\r\nDielectric constant is estimated in a similar manner from field-derived conductivity values applicable at 10^2 cps and statistical correlations of three parameters obtained from laboratory measurements of samples: conductivity measured at 10^2 cps, frequency, and dielectric constant measured over the frequency range 10^2 to 10^6 cps. Dielectric constant may also be estimated from field measurements of water content and correlations of laboratory sample measurements of the three parameters: water content, frequency, and dielectric constant measured from 10^2 to 10^6 cps, but again, this method is less accurate because of variation of ion concentration of pore water. \r\n\r\nSpecial laboratory procedures are used to measure conductivity and dielectric constant of rock and soil samples. Electrode polarization errors are minimized by using an electrode system that is electrochemically reversible-with ions in pore water.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83915","usgsCitation":"Scott, J.H., 1983, Electrical and magnetic properties of rock and soil: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-915, iv, 44 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83915.","productDescription":"iv, 44 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":152324,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0915/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50429,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0915/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47e8e4b07f02db4bd20b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scott, J. Geochemical arguments, including reaction mechanisms, are used to support these findings. Carbon-, hydrogen-, and oxygen-isotope data show that much of the recharge in the area occurred during late Wisconsin time. Absence of ground-water recharge prior to late Pleistocene is considered to indicate that either climatic conditions were unfavorable for recharge or that ground-water velocities were such that they transported this earlier recharge away from the study aea.
