Information on hydraulic properties of the basin fill, recharge from bordering mountain ranges, discharge by evapotranspiration, and exchange of water between aquifer and stream was available from previous measurements or estimates. The steady-state calibration procedure and subsequent transient simulations demonstrated that the original conceptualization can be reasonably simulated. An analysis of model sensitivity to increases and decreases in certain hydraulic properties indicated a low sensitivity to aquifer anisotropy and a low to moderate sensitivity to stream leakance and evapotranspiration rate. An analysis to investigate the effects of generalizing aquifer conductivity and recharge showed that flow components and water-level response to stress could be simulated adequately but that steady-state water-level conditions could not. During equilibrium conditions, recharge to and discharge from the basin was about 16,500 acre-feet per year. Modeling results indicated that by 1978 the storage depletion rate had reached 5,600 acre-feet per year resulting from a ground-water withdrawal rate of 10,500 acre-feet per year. The test hole was drilled in the SW 1/4 SE 1/4 sec. 34, T. 12 N. , R. 1 E., Yolo County, California, about 3 miles northeast of the town of Zamora. Drilled to a depth of 2,500 feet below land surface, the hole is cased to a depth of 190 feet and equipped with three piezometer tubes to depths of 947, 1,401, and 2,125 feet. A 5-foot well screen is at the bottom of each piezometer. Eighteen cores and 68 sidewall cores were recovered. Laboratory tests were made for mineralogy, hydraulic conductivity, porosity , consolidation, grain-size distribution, Atterberg limits, X-ray diffraction, diatom identification, thermal conductivity, and chemical analysis of water. Geophysical and thermal gradient logs were made. The hole is sampled periodically for chemical analysis and measured for water level in the three tapped zones. This percentage represents a decrease from 505 million gallons per day (22.1 cubic meters per second) during 1975, to 456 million gallons per day (20.0 cubic meters per second) during 1979. The decrease resulted from an increased use of surface water that became available from Lake Livingston on the Trinity River during late 1976. During 1975-79, withdrawals of ground water decreased in the Pasadena, Katy, Baytown-La Porte, Johnson Space Center, Texas City, and Alta Loma areas but increased in the Houston area. The decreased withdrawals in the Katy area resulted partly from a small decrease in the acreage of rice planted, but mostly from a decrease in water needed for irrigation during 1979. The pumping of ground water increased in the Houston area because of the growth in population.
\n
From spring 1975 to spring 1980, water levels rose in the southeastern one-half of the district and declined in the northwestern one-half. The maximum rise of water levels in wells in the Chicot aquifer was 110 feet (33.5 meters); the maximum rise in wells in the Evangeline aquifer was 150 feet (45.7 meters). The maximum decline of water levels in wells in the Chicot aquifer was 60 feet (18.3 meters); the maximum decline in wells in the Evangeline aquifer was 70 feet (21.3 meters).
\n
No significant changes occurred in the chloride concentration in water from wells in the Alta Loma area during 1975-79. The concentration of chloride in water from a well completed in the middle part of the Chicot aquifer at Hitchcock is increasing, probably because of updip migration of the freshwater-saltwater interface.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr82431","usgsCitation":"Gabrysch, R., 1982, Ground-water withdrawals and changes in water levels in the Houston District, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-431, Report: vi, 39 p.; 10 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82431.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 39 p.; 10 Plates","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":36564,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36565,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36566,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36567,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36568,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36569,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36570,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36571,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36572,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36573,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36574,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141122,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cbe4b07f02db543a1b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gabrysch, R.K.","contributorId":105691,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gabrysch","given":"R.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158604,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In connection with the proposed reservoirs, the U.S. Geological Survey was requested to define the existing ground-water conditions in the shallow ground-water system of the area and to project the post-construction effects of the reservoirs on the shallow aquifer, especially in relation to aquifer-head changes but also with respect to possible changes in the chemical quality of the ground water.
\n
The Corps of Engineers' plan includes a total impoundment reservoir (Kiowa Peak Lake on North Croton Creek) with more than 170,000 acre-feet of storage at the 100-year average pool altitude of 1,550 feet. Croton Lake (23,000 acrefeet of storage at the 100-year average pool altitude of 1,760 feet) on Croton Creek and Dove Lake (no permanent storage) on Salt Croton Creek are projected to hold salt water for transfer to the large Kiowa Peak Lake.
\n
The aquifer in the project area is a shallow water-table system with relatively fresh water (calcium sulfate type), in comparison to the saline streamflow, and contains 2,000 to 5,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids. The aquifer consists of Permian rocks with very small permeability and is separated from an even less perneable and deeper brine system (sodium chloride type of up to 200,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids) by a thin transition zone. Small quantities of infiltration from precipitation in the drainage area constitute the recharge to the aquifer. Discharge from the aquifer consists of the base flow along creeks; well discharge is negligible.
\n
Two-dimensional digital-computer models were developed for aquifer simulation of steady and transient conditions in which the density effects of salt water are considered. The models were used to project the effects of the 100- year impoundment of salt water in Kiowa Peak Lake and Croton Lake on the freshwater system. Rises in aquifer head of 10 to 50 feet are projected only for areas near each dan and along each lake shoreline. Broad continental uplift associated with Red Sea rifting is symmetric about the Red Sea axis, and geologic and geochronologic evidence indicate that uplift has occurred mainly in the interval 25-13 Ma (mega-annum) ago. Thermal-profile changes in the upper mantle resulting from an influx of hot material associated with rifting yield the correct order of magnitude of uplift, and this mechanism is suggested as the explanation for the regional doming. A lithospheric section, constructed from seismic refraction, gravity, and regional geologic data, provides the framework for construction of thermal models. \r\n\r\nThermal gradient measurements were made in drill holes at five shot points. Geotherms for the Shield, which assume a radiogenic heat-source distribution that decreases exponentially with depth, yield temperatures of about 450?C at a depth of 40 km (base of the crust) for shot points 2 (Sabhah) and 3. The geotherm for shot point 4 (near Bishah) yields a distinctly higher temperature (about 580?C) for the same depth. \r\n\r\nStatic models used to model the heat flow in the oceanic crust of the Red Sea shelf and coastal plain either yield too small a heat flow to match the observed heat flow or give lithosphere thicknesses that are so thin as to be improbable. Dynamic (solid-state accretion) models, which account for mantle flow at the base of the lithosphere, adequately match the observed heat-flow values. In the deep-water trough of the Red Sea, which is presently undergoing active sea-floor spreading, classical models of heat flow for a moving slab with accretion at the spreading center are adequate to explain the average heat-flow level. \r\n\r\nAt shot point 5 (Ad Darb), the anomalous heat flow of 2 HFU (heat-flow units) can be explained in terms of a Shield component (0.8-1.0 HFU) and a component related to heating by the abutting oceanic crust a few kilometers away for periods exceeding 10 Ma. Analytical results are included for: 1) the cooling of a static sheet with an initial temperature distribution characteristic of a moving slab in a sea-floor spreading environment, and 2) the heating of a homogeneous quarter-space at its vertical boundary.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82794","usgsCitation":"Gettings, M.E., 1982, Heat-flow measurements at shot points along the 1978 Saudi Arabia seismic deep-refraction line; Part II, Discussion and interpretation: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-794, ii, 43 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82794.","productDescription":"ii, 43 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141604,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0794/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36728,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0794/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a69e4b07f02db63c67f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gettings, M. In the present study, we assessed the movement of septic-effluent P in seasonally perched ground water near Pine Lake, a typical glacial-till lake in the region. This ground water occurs in soils overlying less permeable glacial till, which is prevalent around Pine Lake and many other lakes in the area. Water samples were taken from 15 shallow (<1.5 meters) wells installed 10-50 meters downgradient from seven septic systems 20 to 40 years old. The equivalent volumetric fraction of each sample consisting of undiluted effluent was estimated from chloride concentration. Using Monte Carlo analysis to account for the various sources of uncertainty, we found that, though movement of diluted septic effluent to the lake was common, transport of more than 1% of effluent P through the soil was probable (p > or = 0.5) for only 4 of 26 samples, was transport of more than 10% of effluent P probable. The highest probabilities of P movement were associated with two samples from a well that was downgradient from a drainfield located at the base of a hillslope depression where perched ground water concentrates and remains for extended periods. All evidence considered, most P loading to Pine Lake from septic systems appears to come from only a few older systems located in areas where perched ground-water flow and associated saturated soil conditions predominate for extended periods during the winter season. The eastern Snake River Plain is a structural basin which has been filled with thin basaltic lava flows, rhyolitic deposits, and interbedded sediments. These rocks form an extensive ground-water reservoir known as the Snake River Plain aquifer. \r\n\r\nSix wells were drilled and two existing wells were deepened at the INEL from 1969 through 1974. Interpretation of data from the drilling program confirms that the subsurface is dominated by basalt flows interbedded with layers of sediment, cinders, and silicic volcanic rocks. \r\n\r\nWater levels in the wells show cyclic seasonal fluctuations of maximum water levels in winter and minimum water levels in mid-summer. Water levels in three wells near the Big Lost River respond to changes in recharge to the Snake River Plain aquifer from the Big Lost River. Measured water levels in multiple piezometers in one well indicate increasing pressure heads with depth. A marked decline in water levels in the wells since 1977 is attributed to a lack of recharge to the Snake River Plain aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82644","usgsCitation":"Goldstein, F., and Weight, W., 1982, Subsurface information from eight wells drilled at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, southeastern Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-644, v, 34 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82644.","productDescription":"v, 34 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141609,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0644/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36794,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0644/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db6997a8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Goldstein, F.J.","contributorId":71975,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goldstein","given":"F.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Weight, W.D.","contributorId":81906,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weight","given":"W.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The folds probably were formed as a result of differential sediment loading when eolian sand dunes of the overlying Summerville Formation of Middle Jurassic age migrated over soft, chemically precipitated, lime muds of the Todilto shortly after their deposition in a regressive, mixed fresh and saline lacustrine or marine environment of deposition. \r\n\r\nEncroachment of Summerville eolian dunes over soft Todilto lime muds was apparently a local phenomenon and was restricted to postulated beltlike zones which trended radially across the Todilto coastline toward the receding body of water. Intraformational folding is believed to be confined to the pathways of individual eolian dunes or clusters of dunes within the dune belts. During the process of sediment loading by migrating sand dunes, layers of Todilto lime mud were differentially compacted, contorted, and dewatered, producing both small- and large-scale plastic deformation structures, including convolute laminations, mounds, rolls, folds, and small anticlines and synclines. With continued compaction and dewatering, the mud, in localized areas, reached a point of desaturation at which sediment plasticity was lost. Prolonged loading by overlying dune sands thus caused faulting, shearing, fracturing, and jointing of contorted limestone beds. These areas or zones of deformation within the limestone became the preferred sites of epigenetic uranium mineralization because of the induced transmissivity created by sediment rupture. \r\n\r\nAlong most of the prograding Todilto coastline, adjacent to the eolian dune belts, both interdune and coastal sabkha environments dominated during Todilto-Summerville time. Sediments in coastal areas consisted mainly of clay, silt, sandy silt, and very fine-grained sand, which was apparently derived from the winnowing of the finer grained fraction of sediment from adjacent dune fields during periods of eolian activity. Most of the sabkha sediments were probably carried in airborne suspension to the low-lying, ground-water-saturated coastal areas, where they were deposited as relatively uniform blanket-like layers. Deposition of sabkha deposits was apparently slow and uniform over most of the Todilto coastal areas and crested only small-scale deformation features in underlying Todilto rocks. Large-scale deformation features and uranium deposits are both notably absent in the Todilto where it is overlain by finer textured sabkha deposits in the Summerville.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8269","usgsCitation":"Green, M.W., 1982, Origin of intraformational folds in the Jurassic Todilto Limestone, Ambrosia Lake uranium mining district, McKinley and Valencia counties, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-69, iii, 29 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8269.","productDescription":"iii, 29 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141778,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0069/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36882,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0069/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cf06","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Green, M. Basin parameters being investigated for their effect on floods are drainage area, length of main stream, slope of main channel, basin altitude, forest cover, and storage area. All of the 187 gaging stations included in the report are equipped with crest-stage gages. In addition, 4 stations are equipped to record stage and precipitation continuously. The relative magnitude of flood flows for different hydrologic regions is shown in graphs that relate maximum discharge to drainage area. This resulted in significant water-level declines along the base of the Pahrump and Manse fans where pumping was concentrated. Maximum observed net decline was slightly more than 60 feet. Much smaller declines occurred in the central valley, and locally, water levels in some shallow wells rose due to recharge derived from the deep percolation of irrigation water. The pumping resulted in about 219,000 acre-feet of storage depletion. Of this, 155,000 acre-feet was from the draining of unconsolidated material, 46,000 was from compaction of fine-grained sediments, and 18,000 acre-feet was from the elastic response of the aquifer and water. The total storage depletion was equal to about 40 percent of the total pumpage. The remaining pumped water was derived from the capture of natural ground-water discharge and reuse of pumped water that had recirculated back to ground water.

Natural recharge to and discharge from the ground-water system is estimated to be 37,000 acre-feet per year. Of this, 18,000 acre-feet per year leaves the area as subsurface outflow through carbonate-rock aquifers which form a multivalley flow system. The extent of this system was not precisely determined by this study. The most probable discharge area for this outflow is along the flood plain of the Amargosa River between the towns of Shoshone and Tecopa. This outflow probably cannot be economically captured by pumping from Pahrump Valley. Consequently, the maximum amount of natural discharge available for capture is 19,000 acre-feet per year. This is larger than the 12,000 acre-feet per year estimated in a previous study; the difference is due to different techniques used in the analysis.

As of 1975, pumping was causing an overdraft of 11,000 acre-feet per year on the ground-water system. No new equilibrium is probable in the foreseeable future. Water levels will probably continue to slowly decline until the pumping is reduced. The moderate rates of decline and very large amounts of ground water stored in the valley-fill reservoir suggest that a long time will be required before the valley-wide depletion of ground-water storage becomes critical. Problems involving water quality, land subsidence, and well interference will probably occur first.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81635","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Nevada Division of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Harrill, J.R., 1982, Ground-water storage depletion in Pahrump Valley, Nevada-California, 1962-75: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-635, Report: viii, 76 p.; 3 Plates: 20.16 x 27.02 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81635.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 76 p.; 3 Plates: 20.16 x 27.02 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140860,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0635/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":351018,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0635/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":351019,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0635/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":351020,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0635/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":351017,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0635/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Pahrump Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.30,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.25,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.25,\n              36.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.30,\n              36.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.30,\n              35.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db6968fa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harrill, James R.","contributorId":99533,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harrill","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159546,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Streamflow, ground-water, and quality-of-water data were collected to provide information about baseline or prevailing hydrologic conditions. A network of hydrologic data-collection sites in the strippable coal areas of the Fruitland Formation was designed to meet the need of detailed investigations, including site-specific studies, and to provide hydrologic data in support of the expanding mining activity. The network consists of 34 continuous-record streamflow-gaging stations (32 included water-quality sampling), 20 miscellaneous water quality of streamflow stations, 12 annual maximum discharge stations, 27 observation wells completed in strata associated with the strippable coal seams, and 24 observation wells completed in channel alluvium downstream from strippable coal areas.
