The flowmeter was tested in the laboratory in 51-, 102-, and 152-millimeter-diameter columns using water velocities ranging from 0.35 to 250 millimeters per second. The heat-pulse flowmeter also was tested in a 15-meter-deep granite test pit with controlled water flow, and in a 58-meter-deep borehole in sedimentary materials. The flowmeter's capability to detect and measure naturally occurring, low-velocity, thermally induced convection currents in boreholes was demonstrated. Further improvements to the heat-pulse-flowmeter system are needed to increase its reliability and improve its response through four-conductor logging cable.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82699","usgsCitation":"Hess, A., 1982, A heat-pulse flowmeter for measuring minimal discharge rates in boreholes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-699, iv, 44 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82699.","productDescription":"iv, 44 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142763,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0699/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37159,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0699/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae4ae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hess, A.E.","contributorId":71979,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hess","given":"A.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159715,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

However, no such enrichment is found in the Proterozoic X Boulder Creek Granodiorite. Although uranium presently does not appear to be significantly enriched in sampled outcrops of Silver Plume Granite, a large part of the original uranium content of Silver Plume may have been removed by oxidizing ground waters, leaving behind mainly the uranium bound in resistate minerals such as zircon and monazite. \r\n\r\nLead isotopic compositions of acid leachate from barren shale and sandstone associated with the Hansen uranium deposit (Tallahassee Creek area) indicate that (1) the predominant source of acid-soluble lead is 1410 m.y: old (Silver Plume age); (2) the source of the lead is characterized by Th/U around 1 (this ratio in the source may apply to soluble minerals only and may exclude thorium and uranium in resistate minerals), and the mean uranium content of this source may be as high as 30 ppm; and (3) at the time of sediment deposition, a paleohydrologic system existed that was capable of transporting Silver Plume lead and, therefore, Silver Plume uranium to the Hansen deposit. Although a significant contribution of uranium from Tertiary volcanic rocks cannot be ruled out and is even probable (Dickinson and Hills, 1982), it appears probable that some of the uranium in deposits of the Tallahassee Creek area was derived from Silver Plume Granite.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82404","usgsCitation":"Hills, F., and Dickinson, K.A., 1982, Silver Plume Granite; possible source of uranium in sandstone uranium deposits, Tallahassee Creek and High Park areas, Fremont and Teller counties, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-404, ii, 26 p., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82404.","productDescription":"ii, 26 p., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141908,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0404/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37192,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0404/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f9e4b07f02db5f3b7c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hills, F. Coarse to very coarse sand covers both the beach and adjacent shelf; in the latter area incoming waves have shaped the sand into large oscillation ripples. The accessibility of this area and a variable wave climate produce a unique opportunity to study large-scale coarse-grained ripples in a high-energy environment. These ripples, which only occur in very coarse sand, form under the intense, wave-generated currents that exist during storm conditions. Once formed, these ripples do not significantly change under lower energy waves. On three separate occasions scuba divers measured ripples and collected sand samples from ripple crests near fixed reference stakes along three transects. Ripple wavelength and grain size decreased with an increase in water depth. Sediment sorting was best closest to the surf zone and poorest at the rim of Carmel Canyon. Cobbles and gravel observed in ripple troughs represent lag deposits. \r\n\r\nCarmel Canyon refracts waves approaching Monastery Beach such that wave energy is focused towards the northern and southern portions of the beach, leaving the central part of the beach lower in energy. This energy distribution causes spatial variations in the ripples and grain sizes with the shortest wavelengths and smallest grain sizes being in the central part of the shelf.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82733","usgsCitation":"Hirschaut, D., and Dingler, J., 1982, A field study of large-scale oscillation ripples in a very coarse-grained, high-energy marine environment: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-733, 35 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82733.","productDescription":"35 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140996,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0733/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37225,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0733/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6aebb3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hirschaut, D.W.","contributorId":43761,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hirschaut","given":"D.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159806,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dingler, J.R.","contributorId":64247,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dingler","given":"J.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159807,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Included are estimates of low-flow frequency at 30 gaging stations, flow duration at 13 gaging stations, and selected low-flow frequency characteristics at 22 low-flow partial-record stations and 123 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. Drainage area and base-flow index were the most significant characteristics in explaining the variation in low flow for sites where one low base-flow measurement (flow durations greater than 80%) has been made. The equations and corresponding standard errors of estimate are computed. Low-flow characteristics are not well defined in the Lake Michigan basin. Standard errors for low-flow characteristics at gaging stations, low-flow partial-record stations, and miscellaneous sites are much higher than State averages. The standard errors for the regression equations are also very high. This is due in part to the flow of many streams in the basin approaching 0 ft/s during low base-flow periods. The graphical regression relation lines are steep for stations on these streams and the resulting standard errors are relatively high. Indian Run was observed above and below the U.S. Soil Conservation Service Reservoir, VI-D. Little Rush Creek was observed 1.1 miles downstream from the proposed U.S. Soil Conservation Reservoir, VI-A, site. Data from the Indian Run sites were used to predict the potential water-quality conditions in and downstream from the proposed Little Rush Creek Reservoir. \r\n\r\nTemperatures measured in Indian Run at the reservoir outflow were as much as 4oc greater than those at the inflow. Dissolved-oxygen saturation ranged from 62 to 110 percent in the inflow and from 57 to 120 percent in the outflow. Indian Run and Little Push Creek are characterized by moderately hard to very hard calcium bicarbonate water. The concentration of dieldrin in water samples from both Little Rush Creek and the outflow from the reservoir on Indian Run was 0.01 micrograms per liter, and in reservoir-surface samples it was 0.02 micrograms per liter. Chlordane concentration in a bottom material sample from the reservoir was 26 micrograms per kilogram. Catfish taken from the reservoir contained 190 micrograms per kilogram chlordane. \r\n\r\nAll sites showed a good diversity in benthic invertebrate communities. Blue-green algal blooms occurred in the reservoir, indicating nutrient-enriched conditions. \r\n\r\nBecause of similarities in land use and watershed characteristics, water in the proposed reservoir VI-A is expected to be similar in quality to that of reservoir VI-D. The new reservoir will not significantly affect downstream water quality.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82109","usgsCitation":"Hren, J., and Jones, R., 1982, Potential impacts of a proposed reservoir on hydrologic and water-quality conditions in Little Rush Creek watershed, Fairfield County, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-109, v, 67 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82109.","productDescription":"v, 67 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142155,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37326,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37327,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37328,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37329,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c04f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hren, Janet","contributorId":69554,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hren","given":"Janet","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159977,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jones, R.L.","contributorId":39785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159976,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The proposed program for 1982 includes a network of 69 surface-water data sites (continuous gaging stations), 250 flood-data sites (crest-stage stations), 679 ground-water wells (water-level observation and water-quality monitor wells), and 138 water-quality sites. The geographic distribution of the data sites is shown in the report. Interpretive studies have objectives that are oriented toward a particular geographic area , to a particular set of hydrologic phenomena, or to obtain information for use in solving specific problems. Current studies of interest to agriculture include the following: (1) Flood hydraulics and hydrology, (2) Low-flow or base-flow of streams in Louisiana, (3) Hydrologic studies in southwestern Louisiana, (4) Hydrologic impacts of surface mining in northern Louisiana, (5) Sparta aquifer study, and (6) Limnology of freshwater lakes. A network of partial record sites is also maintained to monitor specific flows. Peak stages (crest stage) are only recorded at sites where flood information is of interest. At other sites, only the low-flow or base-flow recession is obtained for use in determining relations between ground water and surface water, to assess water supply, and for effluent studies. The more productive wells are completed in the Pediment Gravel and the basalt flows of the Bighole Basalt and Starlight Formation and the sand and gravel of the Sunbeam Formation. A few shallow domestic wells are completed in the water-table aquifer in the Michaud Gravel. Historically, high levels of arsenic were observed in water from several wells completed in the shallow aquifer. In most wells and springs sampled during this study, levels of arsenic and other minor elements were within limits recommended by the U.S. Public Health Service. Heavy metal concentrations in one well completed in the shallow aquifer, and the concentration of arsenic exceeded the recommended limits. There is some evidence that arsenic, as well as several other minor elements, may occur in above-normal levels naturally in local ground water. Ground water used for irrigation generally has a low sodium-absorption ratio and can be used on almost all soils. All irrigation water sampled have a medium to high salinity hazard, and caution should be used when applying these waters on poorly drained soils. Although greater abundance of zeolite and slightly more expanded basal spacings in smectite clays suggest effects of increased hydration of material up to 50 m above the present water table, these differences might also be related to provenance of environment of deposition. The relative uniformity of clay hydration properties in the 50 meters above the current water table suggest long-term stability near the present level. Except for wells in use before 1920, these data constitute the entire record available through 1977. The data are divided into two categories--pumpage from wells used for public supply, and pumpage from wells used mainly for industrial and commercial uses, designated as nonpublic water supply. Pumpage is tabulated by well or well field and is given by month or year with an annual total. The report serves as an introduction and user 's manual to the data, which are available for inspection but are not included in the report because they fill several hundred pages. Such wells in Florida may be grouped into two broad types: (1) Surface-water injection wells, and (2) interaquifer connector wells. Surface-water injection wells are commonly used to supplement drainage for urban areas in karst terranes of central and north Florida. Data are available for 25 wells in the Ocala, Live Oak, and Orlando areas that allow comparison of the quality of water samples from these Floridan aquifer drainage wells with allowable contaminant levels. Comparison indicates that maximum contaminant levels for turbidity, color, and iron, manganese, and lead concentrations are equaled or exceeded in some drainage-well samples, and relatively high counts for coliform bacteria are present in most wells. Interaquifer connector wells are used in the phosphate mining areas of Polk and Hillsborough Counties, to drain mining operations and recharge the Floridan aquifer. Water-quality data available from 13 connector wells indicate that samples from most of these wells exceed standards values for iron concentration and turbidity. One well yielded a highly mineralized water, and samples from 6 of the other 12 wells exceed standards values for gross alpha concentrations. This report discussed benthic-invertebrate and periphytic-algal communities in streams draining homogeneous agricultural, forested, active/reclaimed-mine, and unreclaimed mine watersheds, and relates the biological communities to the physical and chemical characteristics of the streams. Alkalinity and pH were lower and the concentrations of dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum, and zinc were higher in unreclaimed-mine watersheds than in the other land-use watersheds. Numbers and community diversity of benthic invertebrates were less at sites affected by mining than at agricultural or forested sites, owing to (1) synergistic effects of pH, metals, and unsuitable habitat and (2) lack of colonizing drift organisms because of the small drainage area upstream from the mined area. Only a few organisms , such as the caddisflies Cheumatopsyche and Hydrosyche and the chironomids Chironomus and Cricotopus were found in streams draining mine areas. The hypothesis assumes that: (1) no faults are truly planar, (2) opposing noncongruent wavy wallrock surfaces form chambers and bottlenecks along the fault, and (3) most thrusting occurs beneath the water table. These physical constraints permit the following dynamics. \r\n\r\nShear displacement accompanying faulting must constantly change the volume of each chamber. Addition of ground water liquefies dry fault breccia to a heavy incompressible viscous muddy breccia I call fault slurry. When the volume of a chamber along a thrust fault decreases faster than its fault slurry can escape laterally, overpressurized slurry is hydraulically injected into the base of near-vertical fractures in the otherwise impervious overriding plate. Breccia pipes commonly form where such fissures intersect. \r\n\r\nAlternating decrease and increase in volume of the chamber subjects this injection slurry to reversible surges that not only raft and abrade huge clasts sporadically spalled from the walls of the conduit but also act as a forceful hydraulic ram which periodically widens the conduit and extends its top. If the pipe perforates a petroleum reservoir, leaking hydrocarbons float to its top. \r\n\r\nSudden faulting may generate a powerful water hammer that can be amplified at some distal narrow ends of the anastomosing plumbing system, where the shock may produce shatter cones. If vented on the Earth's surface, the muddy breccia, now called extrusion slurry, forms a mud volcano. \r\n\r\nThis hypothesis suggests that many highly disturbed features presently attributed to such catastrophic processes as subsurface explosions or meteorite impacts are due to the rheology of tectonic slurry in an intermittently reactivated pressure-relief tube rooted in a powerful reciprocating hydrotectonic pump activated by a long-lived deep-seated thrust fault.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82307","usgsCitation":"Kopf, R.W., 1982, Hydrotectonics; principles and relevance: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-307, 30 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82307.","productDescription":"30 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140947,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0307/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37669,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0307/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c928","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kopf, R. The aquifer, of early Eocene to Miocene age, ranges from thin interbedded clastics and marl in the updip area to massive limestone and dolomite 1,500 feet thick in the downdip area. The aquifer is confined above by Miocene clay beds, and terminates at depth in low-permeability rocks or the saltwater interface. Model-simulated transmissivity of the upper permeable zone ranged from about 1 x 10 super 3 foot squared per day in the updip area and within parts of the Gulf Trough (a series of alinement basins filled by fine clastic in material) to about 1 x 10 super 6 foot squared per day in South Georgia, and area having large secondarily developed solution channels. The model results indicate that only about 540 cubic feet per second of water flowed through the predeveloped system, from the updip highland area of high altitude and in the areas north of Valdosta and southwest of Jacksonville, to discharge along streams in the updip area and diffuse upward leakage in the downdip area near the coast and offshore. The quality-of-water data were collected from October 1976 to September 1980. For inorganic constituents, the maximum, minimum, and mean concentrations, as well as other statistics are presented; for minor elements, only the maximum, minimum, and mean values are included. Least-squares equations (regressions) are also given relating specific conductance of the streams to the concentration of the major ions. The observed range of specific conductance was 85 to 1,150 micromhos per centimeter for the eight sites. The data indicate fair to excellent water quality. Fecal coliform bacteria, pH, alkalinity, iron, and manganese are the parameters that most often exceed recommended limits established by either the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency or the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. Data from sites on the Norwalk and East Branch Silvermine Rivers indicate little if any undesirable changes in water quality take place as they flow through the study area. The aquifers consist chiefly of saturated sandstones that occur in Upper Permian, Upper Jurassic, and Lower and Upper Cretaceous rocks. In parts of southwestern Kansas, the sandstone aquifers already serve as the principal or secondary source of ground water for irrigation and other uses. Data indicate that water may be available for development in sandstone aquifers in other parts of the study area. In still other areas, water from wells in sandstone aquifers may not be of a suitable quality for some purposes. The data provided include records of selected wells, lithologic logs of test holes and wells, selected formation surfaces and sandstone thicknesses , chemical analyses of water from selected wells, and water levels in observation wells.
