Available historical data on ground-water pumpage in the High Plains were inadequate for use with the computer model. Consequently, a method was developed to estimate historical pumpage data.</p><p>Two principal components were used to develop estimates of ground-water pumpage: (1) Acreage irrigated; and (2) irrigation demand. The Blaney-Criddle formula was used to calculate consumptive-use requirements for irrigated crops grown on the High Plains. The irrigation demand for each crop was estimated by subtracting precipitation available to the crop from the consumptive-use requirement of the crop. Irrigation demands were combined with irrigated acreages to estimate the volume of irrigation water required for areas in the High Plains. Estimates of irrigation water requirements were compiled for 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, and 1978. Irrigation pumpage for use with the computer model can be estimated from the irrigation water requirements by applying a factor to account for irrigation system efficiency.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8240","usgsCitation":"Heimes, F.J., and Luckey, R.R., 1982, Method for estimating historical irrigation requirements from ground water in the High Plains in parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-40, iii, 64 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8240.","productDescription":"iii, 64 p.","numberOfPages":"71","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":356336,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0040/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158792,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0040/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma,  South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -106,\n              32\n            ],\n            [\n              -96,\n              32\n            ],\n            [\n              -96,\n              43.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -106,\n              43.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -106,\n              32\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a51e4b07f02db629ed0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Heimes, Frederick J.","contributorId":20787,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Heimes","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198451,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Luckey, Richard R.","contributorId":17980,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Luckey","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198450,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Ten are in areas hydraulically connected with the master stream and have a shallow water table, the 11th is a buried valley system on the Lake Ontario Plain. In all systems, till, lake silt and clay, and bedrock knobs are interspersed within sand and gravel. Confining conditions occur locally in all systems and are extensive in some. Each area is partly urbanized, contains industry, and has an extensive transportation network, all of which may be sources of contamination. Well yields for public and industrial supply are commonly several hundred gallons per minute. More than 90 maps depict surficial geology, soil-zone permeability, aquifer dimensions and potential, water levels, and land use; tables of ground-water use, population served, and a summary of contamination potential are also given. Major concern in all areas is the potential for contamination and, in a few areas, adequacy of supply. The areas described are Schenectady, Endicott-Johnson City, Ramapo and Mahwah Rivers, Irondequoit Creek, Jamestown, Elmira-Horseheads-Big Flats, Cortland, Homer-Preble, Sprout and Fishkill Creeks, Fulton, and south Fallsburg-Woodbourne. Except for alewives, proximate composition and caloric content did not differ significantly between males and females. And, for coho salmon, there was no significant difference in composition between fish collected in different years. Lipid and caloric content of lake trout increased directly with age. In all species examined, lipids and caloric contents were significantly lower in small, presumably immature, fish than in larger, older fish. Lipid content of lake trout, lake whitefish, and bloaters (range of means, 16-22%) was nearly 3 times higher than that of coho salmon, sculpins, rainbow smelt, and alewives (range of means, 5.2-7.0%). The mean caloric content ranged from 6.9 to 7.1 kcal/g for species high in lipids and from 5.8 to 6.3 kcal/g for species low in lipids. Although the caloric content of all species varied directly with lipid content and inversely with water content, an increase in lipid content did not always coincide with a proportional increase in caloric content when other components of fish composition were essentially unchanged. This observation suggests that the energy content of fish estimated from the proximate composition by using universal conversion factors may not necessarily be accurate.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Rottiers, D.V., and Tucker, R.M., 1982, Proximate composition and caloric content of eight Lake Michigan fishes: Technical Paper 108, 8 p. : ill. ; 27 cm.","productDescription":"8 p. : ill. ; 27 cm.","startPage":"0","endPage":"8","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":165551,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db687e58","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rottiers, Donald V.","contributorId":10754,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rottiers","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":218276,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tucker, Robert M.","contributorId":20383,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tucker","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":218277,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

However, the information contained in the report is pertinent to other crystalline-rock areas as well. \r\n\r\nThe study area is underlain chiefly by crystalline rocks and partly by unaltered sandstones and siltstones. \r\n\r\nThe ground water is derived from local precipitation and generally occurs under water-table conditions. Its movement is restricted by the lack of interconnected openings, and most ground water occurs within 300 feet of the land surface. Hydrographs indicate no long-term change in ground-water storage. \r\n\r\nA few wells yield more than 100 gallons per minute, but about 70 percent of 286 inventoried wells yield 10 gallons per minute or less; most specific capacities are less than 1.0 gallon per minute per foot. \r\n\r\nThe ground-water quality is generally satisfactory without treatment, and there are no known widespread pollution problems. \r\n\r\nEstimated daily figures on ground-water use are as follows: 780,000 gallons for domestic purposes; 55,000, for commercial purposes; and 160,000, for public supply. \r\n\r\nAlthough part of the area is served by an existing surface-water supply and could be served by possible extension of it and of other public-supply water mains, much of the rural population is dependent on the ground water available from private wells tapping the single aquifer that underlies any given location. Neither the ground-water conditions nor this dependence on individual wells is unique to the study area, but, rather, applies to the entire Piedmont province.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O. :\r\nfor sale by the Supt. of Docs., U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2077","usgsCitation":"Richardson, C.A., 1982, Ground water in the Piedmont upland of central Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2077, iv, 42 p. :ill., maps ;23 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2077.","productDescription":"iv, 42 p. :ill., maps ;23 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":94721,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2077/report.pdf","size":"3372","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137574,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2077/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d908","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Richardson, Claire A.","contributorId":33299,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richardson","given":"Claire","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145449,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Geohydrologic data are compiled on five maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a buried glacio-fluvial aquifer in Monroe County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, bedrock topography, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, potentiometric surface altitude, and land use. The buried-valley deposits consist of ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and glaciolacustrine sand, silt, and clay. The sand and gravel have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt, and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel, whereas artesian conditions prevail in the northern part of the system within sand and gravel confined by silty deposits. Recharge occurs principally over the southern part of the aquifer, due to permeable land-surface conditions. Ground-water movement is towards the Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario, where discharge occurs. Several communities have wells capable of producing several hundred gallons per minute from the aquifer. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly residential with lesser amounts of industrial uses. The west half of the area is in the Basin and Range lowlands water province, and the east half is in the Central high-lands water province (see index map). The Basin and Range lowlands province generally is characterized by high mountains separated by broad valleys filled with deposits that commonly store large amounts of ground water. The Central highlands province consists mostly of rugged mountain masses made up of igneous, metamorphic, and well-consolidated sedimentary rocks that contain little space for the storage of ground water except where highly fractured or faulted. A few small valleys between the mountains contain varying thicknesses of water.-bearing deposits. The area is drained by the Bill Williams River and its major tributaries-the Big Sandy River and the Santa Maria River. Many reaches of the Big Sandy and Santa Maria Rivers and their major tributaries are perennial; the flow is sustained by ground-water discharge (Brown and others, 1978, sheet 2). In the Bill Williams area most of the water used is from ground water, although a small amount of surface water also may be diverted. About 18,000 acre-ft of ground water was withdrawn in 1979 (U.S. Geological Survey, 1981). About 17,000 acre-ft was used for the irrigation of 5,200 acres, and the rest was used for domestic, stock, and public supplies. Most of the irrigated land is in Skull Valley and along lower Kirkland Creek and the Bill Williams River. Only selected wells are shown on the maps in areas of high well density. The hydrologic data on which these maps are based are available, for the most part, in computer-printout form and may be consulted at the Arizona Department of Water Resources, 99 East Virginia, Phoenix, and at U.S. Geological Survey offices in: Federal Building, 301 West Congress Street, Tucson, and Valley Center, Suite 1880, Phoenix. Color, water content and sensitivity of the ash were measured in the field. The ash alternated between reddish brown and dark reddish brown in color and had water contents as high as 392%. A downhole vane shear device measured sensitivities as high as 6.9. A series of laboratory tests including grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, X-ray diffraction analysis, total carbon determination, vane shear, direct shear and triaxial tests were performed to determine the composition and geotechnical properties of the ash. The ash is very fine grained, highly plastic and composed mostly of gibbsite and amorphous material presumably allophane. The ash has a high angle of internal friction ranging from 40-43? and is classified as medium to very sensitive. \r\n\r\nA series of different ash layers was distinguished on the basis of plasticity and other geotechnical properties. Sensitivity may be due to a metastable fabric, cementation, leaching, high organic content, and thixotropy. The sensitivity of the volcanic ash deposits near Hilo is consistent with documented slope instability during earthquakes in Hawaii. The high angles of internal friction and cementation permit very steep slopes under static conditions. However, because of high sensitivity of the ash, these slopes are particularly susceptible to seismically-induced landsliding.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82279","usgsCitation":"Wieczorek, G.F., Jibson, R., Wilson, R.C., and Buchanan-Banks, J., 1982, Geotechnical properties of ash deposits near Hilo, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-279, 20 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82279.","productDescription":"20 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140189,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0279/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34603,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0279/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b085","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wieczorek, G. In 1977 and 1978, the highest TCE concentration was found surrounding the most productive well, Haven well. Large quantities of TCE were used for degreasing between 1955 and 1965 and, so far as is known, TCE was used extensively up until 1973. Data on how, where, and when TCE got into the aquifer are lacking, but geochemical evidence and TCE analyses show a strong relation between the high TCE concentrations near Haven well and the extensive storm-drain system that underlies the parking apron and runway. The drains help recycle some of the TCE-contaminated ground water from the Haven well area.</p><p>Sources of TCE-free ground water on PAFB may exist in the northern parts and do exist in the southern parts of the main aquifer; however, in the southern part, either the ground water is probably already being used nearly to capacity (Smith and Harrison production wells) or further development might adversely affect off-base ground-water use. In the northern part, available subsurface data indicate that only relatively small yields are likely at any one site; thus, to get sustained yields comparable to that of the Haven well would probably require an unreasonable number of wells.</p><p>This study locates TCE contamination in the main PAFB aquifer and discusses three possible water-use alternatives: (I) Abandonment of Haven well, (2) treatment of Haven well water to remove TCE, and (3) treatment of a portion of Haven well water for domestic consumption and use of the remainder for nondomestic uses. Continued use of the Haven well, with treatment of all or part of its yield for TCE removal, is advantageous, both because the Haven well is a high-yield source of water and because cessation of pumping from it might allow TCE-contaminated ground water to move downgradient (southward), endangering the Smith and Harrison production wells. Continued study and monitoring of the TCE contamination would help in predicting when the contamination problem will no longer be threatening.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80557","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force","usgsCitation":"Bradley, E., 1982, Trichloroethylene in the ground-water supply of Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth, New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-557, Report: iv, 22 p.; 8 Plates: 12.40 x 10.18 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80557.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 22 p.; 8 Plates: 12.40 x 10.18 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":427001,"rank":10,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427000,"rank":9,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426999,"rank":8,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426998,"rank":7,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426997,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426996,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426995,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426994,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426993,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141499,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire","city":"Portsmouth","otherGeospatial":"Pease Air Force Base","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.82239490389902,\n              43.10272920652986\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.82239490389902,\n              43.015435633341184\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.69191552120652,\n              43.015435633341184\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.69191552120652,\n              43.10272920652986\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.82239490389902,\n              43.10272920652986\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a49e4b07f02db6247d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bradley, Edward","contributorId":67071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bradley","given":"Edward","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157011,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
