Transient Water Quality Network were evaluated and compared using actual water-quality data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey. The field data were taken from steady-state studies of the Chattahoochee River in Georgia, the Willamette River in Oregon, and the Arkansas River in Colorado. The data used to evaluate the models covered a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological conditions. The Willamette River is a large sluggish stream, whereas the Arkansas River is a small dynamic stream. The Chattahoochee River is of moderate size. Each stream has unique water-quality characteristics that test a wide range of model options. Although the Survey has never been a water-management or development agency, it has assisted agencies that are responsible for such developments, and commonly provides data and information for such purposes. Because reservoirs are an intergral part of most water-development projects, the Survey has been involved in reservoir-related studies since the 1880's. The largest and longest involvement has centered on providing information on streamflows and sediment transport related to existing and proposed reservoirs. During the late 1940's, the Survey greatly expanded its activities in evaporation research. More recently, ground water, including bank storage, has gained increased attention. Most of these studies were related primarily to questions of water quantity, and the Survey continues to be involved in studies of physical hydrology. In addition, in response to the increased concern with environmental quality during the past 20 years, the number of Survey studies of the chemical and biological aspects of lakes and reservoirs have increased considerably. </p><p>Prompted by the recent Centennial (1879-1979) of the U.S. Geological Survey, it is appropriate to assess the Survey's contributions to the hydrology of lakes and reservoirs. Both natural lakes and manmade reservoirs are included in this report. 1 This report includes studies in which lakes or reservoirs are the principal topics. It does not include reports of general water resources of an area in which lakes are discussed as part of that area. This report also does not include data reports in which the data are merely tabulated. The types of reports listed herein include studies of existing or proposed water bodies and associated fluxes of water to and from these water bodies. </p><p>This report does not include geological or paleobiological studies of ancient lakes. This report does, however, include geological studies of proposed reservoir sites. </p><p>This bibliography has three parts. The first part is an alphabetical listing that gives complete references to the given reports. Part 2 is a listing by topics, and only the authors, date of publication, and cross-reference to the State are given. Six general categories are considered: Lake hydrology; interaction of lakes and streamflow, including geological studies of reservoir sites; interaction of lakes and atmospheric water; interaction of lakes. and ground water; chemical and biological limnology; and sediment studies. The first four consist of studies of physical characteristics of lakes, and the last two of water-quality characteristics. The category of lake hydrology includes general studies of lakes that are not easily grouped into one of the more specific categories of physical characteristics. For example, it includes water-budget studies where all aspects of hydrology are discussed. It also includes studies&nbsp;of hydrodynamics of lakes as well as studies of lake-level fluctuations.&nbsp;</p><p>The category of interaction of lakes and streamflow includes preimpoundment studies of streamflow discharge for reservoir design, and studies of the effects of existing reservoirs on streamflow and channel characteristics. Also included in this category are geological studies of river valleys for proposed reservoir sites. The category of interaction of lakes and atmospheric water includes primarily studies of evaporation. The interaction of lakes and ground water includes studies of bank storage. The category of chemical and biological studies was not subdivided into more specific types because of the virtually inseparable relation between chemistry and biology in most studies. </p><p>This bibliography provided much of the information for two papers that discuss the history of U.S. Geological Survey studies of lakes and reservoirs. These estimates are from the frequency curves defined from the streamflow records. Short-term records for 66 sites were extended on the basis of long-term climatic records and a rainfall-runoff model. These frequency curves may provide the best estimates of floods at these gaged sites. Analyses of flood-frequency information from these gaged sites have been the basis for techniques (published previously) used in estimating flood magnitude and frequency at ungaged sites in South Dakota. </p><p>This report supplements flood-frequency information published earlier. It presents: Annual peak discharges colected during a 25-year period at 124 crest-stage partial-record stations; maximum observed and unit discharges determined for 124 crest-stage and 120 continuous-record gaging stations; updated flood-frequency curves for 120 crest-stage gages; a documentation of analytical procedures used; and a summary of the small-streams flood-peak data collection program in the State from 1955 to 1981. Maximum flood peaks determined at 244 partial- and continuous-record gaging stations and at 52 miscellaneous sites are compared with regional flood The purpose of the reconnaissance was to determine selected quality characteristics of the surface- and ground-water of the landfill and contiguous area; and to assess, generally, if leachate produced by the decomposition of landfill wastes was adversely impacting the downgradient water quality. Sampling results indicated that several water-quality characteristics were present in landfill ground water at significantly higher levels than in ground water upgradient or downgradient from the landfill. Moreover, many of these water-quality characteristics were found at slightly higher levels at down gradient site 5 than at upgradient site 1 which suggested that some downgradient movement of landfill leachate had occurred. For example, chloride and alkalinity in ground water had average concentrations of 20 and 290 mg/L at background wells (site 1), 144 and 610 mg/L at landfill wells (sites 2 and 4), and 29 and 338 mg/L at downgradient wells (site 5). A comparison of the 1977-78 sampling results with the National Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Regulations indicated that levels of iron and color in ground water of the study area frequently exceeded national maximum contaminant levels, dissolved solids, turbidity, lead, and manganese occasionally exceeded regulations. Concentrations of iron and levels of color and turbidity in some surface water samples also exceeded National maximum contaminant levels. Annual hydrologic data are provided for relating water-level changes from a ' base-reference year ' (predevelopment year), a year of abnormally high rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966 or 1974), and each of seven consecutive years of measurement (1976-82), the ' base-reference year ' is designated as 1940 for the southwestern area, 1944 for the south-central area, and 1950 for the northwestern and west-central areas. Water levels for the ' base-reference year ' are established by measurements made during that year and by interpretation of maps showing water-level altitudes. Hardgrounds and two faults described in previous literature also are shown on the map. \r\n\r\nOn the Continental Shelf, at least two faults, the Helena Banks fault and the White Oak lineament, appear to be tectonic in origin. However, a lack of historical seismicity associated with these faults indicates that they are probably not active at the present time. Hardgrounds are widely scattered but are most abundant in Onslow Bay. Although paleostream channels are common nearshore, they do not appear to be common on the central and outer shelf except off Albemarle Sound where extensive Pleistocene, Pliocene, and late Miocene channels extend across the shelf. Mobile bottom sediments are confined mainly to the shoals off Cape Romain, Cape Fear, Cape Lookout, and Cape Hatteras. Elsewhere the sand cover is thin, and older more indurated rocks are present in subcrop. \r\n\r\nNo slope-instability features were noted on the Florida-Hatteras slope off North Carolina. The lack of features indicates that this slope is relatively stable. \r\n\r\nEvidence for scour by strong currents is ubiquitous on the northern Blake Plateau although deep-water reefs are sparse. The outer edge of the plateau is dominated by a major growth fault and numerous splay and antithetic faults. These faults are the product of salt tectonism in the Carolina trough and thus are not associated with seismicity. Displacements observed near the sea floor and breached diapirs offshore indicate that the main fault is still moving. Associated with the faults are collapse features that are interpreted to be caused by karst solution and cavernous porosity in Eocene and Oligocene limestones at depth. \r\n\r\nMajor slumps have taken place in two large areas of the Continental Slope. Seismic-reflection profiles of the southern area, centered on the lower slope at 1at. 33?N., long. 76?W., show a 80-m-hlgh scarp in which bedding has been truncated. Rotational slump faults are present in this area on the middle and upper slope. Sidescan images show that large blocks have slid downslope from the scarp face, furrowing the bottom. High-resolution (3.5-kHz) records show that the rotational slump faults upslope are active. The association of these slumps and the scarps with salt diapirs suggests subsidence accompanying salt tectonism as the cause. Seismic-reflection records over the northern area, at about fat. 36?20'N., long. 74?40'W., show two steep scarps, each about 225 m high on the upper and middle-slope. These slump scars and an absence of Pleistocene sediments indicate that large blocks of the slope have been removed by slumping. \r\n\r\nThe slope north of fat. 35?N. is highly dissected by canyons. Mid-range sidescan-sonar records suggest that the canyons are the product of mass wasting and have probably formed largely by slumping. \r\n\r\nSediments in a wide zone on the upper rise are highly disturbed and faulted owing to salt tectonism. Twenty-six salt diapirs are mapped, as is a zone of disturbed bottom related to salt tectonism. \r\n\r\nAn area of frozen bottom (clathrate) under which shallow free gas is trapped underlies the outer Blake Plateau, the slope, and the upper rise. The water table of the high-transmissivity aquifer that underlies the area is generally shallower than 15 feet, fluctuates seasonally about 2 feet, and slopes northwesterly, the direction of ground-water flow. Private domestic-supply wells obtain water from the upper part of the aquifer. Septic systems used to dispose of waste water are installed at or only slightly above the water table in the same aquifer. Analyses of samples from 16 observation wells in undeveloped parts of the study area and from 33 domestic wells indicated that water quality has not been significantly degraded by on-site waste disposal. Three samples had detectable but minor contamination by fecal coliform bacteria. Anomalous values of chloride and ammonia in one third of the domestic wells may indicate incipient degradation of ground-water quality by septic-tank effluent. This report discusses benthic-invertebrate and periphyticalgal communities in streams draining homogeneous-agricultural, forested, active/reclaimed-mine, reclaimed-mine, and unreclaimed-mine watersheds--and relates the biological communities to the physical and chemical characteristics of the streams. \r\n\r\nAlkalinity and pH were lower and the concentrations of dissolved solids, suspended solids, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum, and zinc were higher in unreclaimed-mine watersheds than in the other land-use watersheds. \r\n\r\nNumbers and community diversity of benthic invertebrates were less at sites affected by mining than at agricultural or forested sites, owing to (1) synergistic effects of low pH, metals, and unsuitable habitat and (2) lack of colonizing drift organisms because of the small drainage area upstream from the mined area. The map was prepared as an initial step in an ongoing liquefaction-potential study, but is not a liquefaction-hazard map. The contour map indicates where ground water shallower than 50 ft below land surface occurred at least once during the 1973-1979 period, and also indicates the probable future distribution of ground water shallower than 50 ft below land surface for periods when climatic conditions and water-management policies similar to those in the 1970's recur. This contour map does not show how the water table actually looked at any particular instant during the reporting period, nor does it show average or typical ground-water conditions during the reporting period. Instead, this map shows what the regional ground-water table would look like if the shallowest water level measured in each well during the 1973-1979 period is used as the basis for constructing a map of minimum depth to ground water.</p><p>This map identifies twenty areas within the upper Santa Ana River valley where water levels in wells were shallower than 50 ft below land surface at least once during the period 1973-1979. In the greater Santa Ana River area, between the San Jacinto ground-water barrier and Prado flood-control dam, ground water was shallower than 50 ft below land surface intermittently throughout the 1973-1979 period. In this area, shallow water generally reflects shallow depths to impermeable bedrock and the ease and frequency with which ground water is replenished by natural and artificial recharge. Most of the other areas of shallow ground water identified on this map experienced pervasive shallow water levels only after mid-1977. Prior to mid-1977, ground water in these areas generally was deeper than 50 ft below land surface.</p><p>During later parts of the 1973-1979 period, water tables rose mainly because of two factors: (1) wetter-than-normal winters in 1977-1978 and 19781979 contributed increased volumes of surface runoff and natural recharge in the upper Santa Ana River valley region; and (2) commencing in 1972, ground water in the Valley region has been replenished by artificial recharge of imported water derived from the California State Water Project. The accelerated natural and artificial recharge of ground water basins in 1977, 1978, and 1979 raised ground water tables throughout the Valley region.</p><p>Water-level records more recent than September 1979 indicate that for most of the twenty areas of shallow ground water, water levels have remained shallower than 50 ft below land surface through December 1981. In some areas, water levels have risen even more. For example, in the San Bernardino area, rising water locally has invaded basements, undermined roadways, and affected foundation construction.
