Data have been compiled and analyzed, and even though water-quality problems exist in the basin, the water generally is of good quality for most of the beneficial uses defined by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Water-quality objectives for dissolved oxygen, pesticides, and pH were violated in some parts of the basin. The most likely cause of the dissolved-oxygen and pesticide violations is the return of agricultural irrigation water to the river in the lower 30 miles of the river. Violations of pH objectives occurred only in the upper drainage and were likely due to naturally occurring, poorly buffered water. Water quality is currently being monitored at three stations in the basin by California Department of Water Resources, at one station by the U.S. Geological Survey, and at several sites by the National Park Service. Modifications to the current water-quality monitoring program are proposed to gain further information on dissolved-oxygen fluctuations and pesticide concentrations in the lower river and to investigate nutrient input to Lake McClue. Two dimensional modeling of ground-water flow in the mine spoil indicates that the rise is caused by leakage from one storage basin. The hydrologic-parameter values producing the best fit between computed and observed head values are 0.000007 feet per second for the hydraulic conductivity of the mine spoil, 0.0000000004 feet per second for recharge from the leaking basin. The model indicates the volume of water leaking from the basin is 91,600 cubic yards per year. The principal components of the sewage sludge after the solids have been removed are alkalinity, nitrogen, phosphorous, and chloride. Components in higher concentrations near the basins were sodium, alkalinity, and chloride. Because the sodium and chloride concentrations in the sludge were too low to cause the higher concentrations in the ground water, the strip-mine spoil used in constructing the basins was considered to be the major source of these constituents. This spoil has been moved from its original location and unweathered surfaces exposed, which allowed dissolution of carbonate and chloride and release of sodium through cation exchange.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri824047","usgsCitation":"Patterson, G.L., 1982, Hydrologic effects of storing liquified sewage sludge on strip-mined land, Fulton County, Illinois: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-4047, iv, 30 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri824047.","productDescription":"iv, 30 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":411531,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35571.htm"},{"id":57925,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4047/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123079,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4047/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Illinois","county":"Fulton County","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -90.092,\n 40.517\n ],\n [\n -90.128,\n 40.517\n ],\n [\n -90.128,\n 40.483\n ],\n [\n -90.092,\n 40.483\n ],\n [\n -90.092,\n 40.517\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db606e2c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Patterson, G. Average rainfall intensity is plotted against storm duration on log-log paper. All rainfall events are designated as having either runoff or nonrunoff. A power-decay-type curve is visually fitted to separate the two types of rainfall events. This separation curve is an incipient-ponding curve and its equation describes infiltration parameters for a soil. For basins with more than one soil complex, only the incipient-ponding curve for the soil complex with the lowest infiltration rate can be defined using the separation technique. Incipient-ponding curves for soils with infiltration rates greater than the lowest curve are defined by ranking the soils according to their relative permeabilities and optimizing the curve position. A comparison of results for six basins produced computed total runoff for all events used ranging from 16.6 percent less to 2.3 percent more than measured total runoff. Fourteen geologic units that underlie the study area were grouped into nine hydr, bgeologic units and were incorporated into a five-layer model. The layers in the simulation model include the Mount SimonHinckley, Ironton-Galesville, Prairie du Chien-Jordan, and St. Peter aquifers, and the drift.
\n
Sensitivity analyses were made for 19 parameter and boundary-condition specifications. Model results are -most sensitive to recharge and withdrawal rates and to hydrogeologic variations related to drift-filled bedrock valleys. Analyses of available data and results of steady-state simulations indicate that critical data needs for improving the simulation model include spatial and temporal variations in ground-water withdrawals and potentiometric levels, and hydraulic properties of drift filling or partly filling bedrock valleys.
\n
Areal distribution of calcium, sodium, sulfate, and chloride concentrations were analyzed to provide information on the hydrologic and geochemical relationships between aquifers. Ground water is generally of the calcium magnesium bicarbonate type. Concentration of dissolved solids in water from the Jordan Sandstone and Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer generally decreases from southwest to northeast across the study area. This decrease probably reflects differences in the quality of recharge water and geochemical processes within the aquifers, such as ion exchange.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological G-1 and G-2 wells, United States North Atlantic outer continental shelf","docAbstract":"The COST Nos. G-1 and G-2 wells (fig. 1) are the second and third deep stratigraphic test wells drilled in the North Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf of the United States. COST No. G-1 was drilled in the Georges Bank basin to a total depth of 16,071 ft (4,898 m). G-1 bottomed in phyllite, slate, and metaquartzite overlain by weakly metamorphosed dolomite, all of Cambrian age. From approximately 15,600 to 12,400 ft (4,755 to 3,780 m) the strata are Upper Triassic(?), Lower Jurassic(?), and Middle Jurassic, predominantly red shales, sandstones, and conglomerates. Thin, gray Middle Jurassic beds of shale, sandstone, limestone, and dolomite occur from 12,400 to 9,900 ft (3,780 to 3,018 m). From 9,900 to 1,030 ft (3,018 to 314 m) are coarse-grained unconsolidated sands and loosely cemented sandstones, with beds of gray shale, lignite, and coal. The microfossils indicate the rocks are Upper Jurassic from 10,100 ft (3,078 m) up to 5,400 ft (1,646 m) and Cretaceous from that depth to 1,030 ft (314 m). No younger or shallower rocks were recovered in the drilling at the COST No. G-1 site, but an Eocene limestone is inferred to be disconformable over Santonian strata. The Jurassic strata of the COST No. G-1 well were deposited in shallow marine, marginal marine, and nonmarine environments, which changed to a dominantly shallow marine but still nearshore environment in the Cretaceous. \r\n\r\nThe COST No. G-2 well was drilled 42 statute miles {68 km) east of the G-1 site, still within the Georges Bank basin, to a depth of 21,874 ft (6,667 m). The bottom 40 ft (12 m) of salt and anhydrite is overlain by approximately 7,000 ft {2,134 m) of Upper Triassic{?), Lower Jurassic{?) and Middle Jurassic dolomite, limestone, and interbedded anhydrite from 21,830 to 13,615 ft (6,654 to 4,153 m). From 13,500 to 9,700 ft (4,115 to 2,957 m) are Middle Jurassic limestones with interbedded sandstone. From 9,700 to 4,000 ft (2,957 to 1,219 m) are Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous interbedded sandstones and limestones overlain by Upper Cretaceous unconsolidated sands, sandstones, and calcareous shales. Pliocene, Miocene, Eocene, and Paleocene strata are disconformable over Santonian rocks; uppermost Cretaceous rocks are missing at this site, as at G-1. The sedimentary rocks in the COST No. G-2 well were deposited in somewhat deeper water, farther away from sources of terrigenous material than those at G-l, but still in marginal marine to shallow marine environments. \r\n\r\nData from geophysical logs and examination of conventional cores, wellcuttings, and sidewall cores show that below 10,000 ft {3,048 m), the strata in both wells have moderate porosities {< 20 percent) and low to moderate permeabilities {< 100 mD) and are thus considered adequate to poor reservoir rocks. Above 10,000 ft (3,000 m) the porosities range from 16 to 39 percent, and the permeabilities are highly variable, ranging from 0.01 to 7,100 mD. \r\n\r\nMeasurements of vitrinite reflectance, color alteration of visible organic matter, and various organic geochemical properties suggest that the Tertiary and Cretaceous strata of the COST Nos. G-1 and G-2 are not prospective for oil and gas. These sediments have not been buried deeply enough for hydrocarbon generation, and the kerogen and extractable organic matter in them are thermally immature. However, the Jurassic rocks at the G-1 site do contain small amounts of thermally mature gas-prone kerogens. The Jurassic rocks at COST No. G-2 are also gas-prone and are slightly richer in organic carbon and total extractable hydrocarbons than the G-1 rocks, but both sites have only poor to fair oil and gas source-rock potential.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir861","usgsCitation":"Wenkam, C.R., 1982, Geological studies of the COST nos. Comparing yearly mean chemical concentrations shows no changing trends since reclamation began, nor are there differences between stations upstream and downstream from the site. Yearly suspended-sediment loads and discharge relations upstream and downstream from the site also show no differences. Discharge hydrographs of two streams draining the site show a delayed response to precipitation due to the storage capacity of several upstream strip-mine lakes. The water-table surface generally follows the irregular topography. Monthly water-level fluctuations were dependent on the surface material (mined or unmined) and proximity to surface discharge. The largest fluctuations were in unmined land away from discharge while the smallest were in mined land near discharge. The water table is closer to the surface in unmined land. Analyses of water samples from 70 wells within or adjacent to the reclamation site showed no differences in water quality which could be attributed to sludge or supernatant application. Samples from wells in mined land, however, had higher concentrations of dissolved sulfate, calcium, magnesium, chloride, iron, zinc, and manganese than samples from wells in unmined land. Irrigated acreages for 1974-80 were compiled for wheat, grain sorghum, corn, and alfalfa using records from the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Consumptive-irrigation requirements were computed using a soil-moisture model. The model tabulated monthly soil-moisture and crop-water demand for various crops and computed the volume of irrigation water needed to maintain the available moisture at 50% for loamy soils or at 60% for sandy soils. Irrigated acres in the study area increased from 265,000 acres during 1974 to 321,000 acres during 1980. As a result of that program, a technique is presented for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods on small streams in South Carolina with drainage areas ranging in size from 1 to 500 square miles. Peak-discharge data from 74 stream-gaging stations (25 small streams were synthesized, whereas 49 stations had long-term records) were used in multiple regression procedures to obtain equations for estimating magnitude of floods having recurrence intervals of 10, 25, 50, and 100 years on small natural streams. Maps are based on water levels measured in wells each May to coincide with the seasonal low levels and each September to coincide with seasonal high levels. The mapped area shows 14 well fields that supplied 181.1 million gallons to municipalities on May 10, 1982. The water is withdrawn from the Floridan aquifer, the major aquifer in Florida. The effect of localized withdrawal on ground water is shown on the maps as depressions in both the potentiometric and water-table surfaces. In May 1982, ground-water levels were lower than those of September 1981. Seasonal recharge from above-average rainfall and reduced pumpage aided in the water-level recovery from record to near record levels of May 1981.
