Streamflow was measured and water samples were collected three times at each of three sites during the study. All samples were collected during periods of stormwater runoff. The water was soft (7 to 20 milligrams per liter of hardness as calcium carbonate) and dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 36 to 74 milligrams per liter. Suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 7 to 144 milligrams per liter. The 5-day biochemical oxygen-demands, total-nitrogen concentrations and total-phosphorus concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 6.8 milligrams per liter, 0.54 to 5.8 milligrams per liter, and 0.03 to 0.56 milligram per liter, respectively. Fecal-coliform bacteria were present in large enough concentrations at two of the sites (340 to 490 colonies per 100 milliliters and 1,200 to 6,000 colonies per 100 milliliters) to indicate that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion for bathing waters and the Arkansas water-quality standard may be exceeded at times. Total-iron concentrations greater than 1,000 micrograms per liter (the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion for protection of freshwater aquatic life) were detected at least once at all sites. This study was undertaken to determine if any changes in flood response of the Red River basin can be documented. A review of the hydrologic setting, previous floods, flood-control measures, and probable effects of land-use changes shows that the flooding problem of the Red River basin is complex hydrologically, highly variable historically, and follows a regional pattern. Therefore, a change in flood response of the basin is difficult to identify. The flood-frequency, regression, normalized-hydrograph, and double-mass analyses show little indication of significant change in flood response of the Red River basin at locations on the main stem. The purpose of the reconnaissance was to determine selected quality characteristics of the surface- and ground-water of the landfill and contiguous area; and to assess, generally, if leachate produced by the decomposition of landfill wastes was adversely impacting the downgradient water quality. Sampling results indicated that several water-quality characteristics were present in landfill ground water at significantly higher levels than in ground water upgradient or downgradient from the landfill. Moreover, many of these water-quality characteristics were found at slightly higher levels at down gradient site 5 than at upgradient site 1 which suggested that some downgradient movement of landfill leachate had occurred. For example, chloride and alkalinity in ground water had average concentrations of 20 and 290 mg/L at background wells (site 1), 144 and 610 mg/L at landfill wells (sites 2 and 4), and 29 and 338 mg/L at downgradient wells (site 5). A comparison of the 1977-78 sampling results with the National Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Regulations indicated that levels of iron and color in ground water of the study area frequently exceeded national maximum contaminant levels, dissolved solids, turbidity, lead, and manganese occasionally exceeded regulations. Concentrations of iron and levels of color and turbidity in some surface water samples also exceeded National maximum contaminant levels. The system is general and can easily be adapted for other studies. This report documents the High Plains data base as well as the general system that is independent of the High Plains area. The system is built around a hierarchically structured data base consisting of related latitude-longitude blocks. Various parameters in the data base are stored at different degrees of detail, with the finest detail being a block of 1 minute of latitude by 1 minute longitude (approximately 1 square mile). In the salt-dome basin the Tokio Formation and Brownstown Marl (Austin aquifer in this report), and Nacatoch Sand of Late Cretaceous age and the Wilcox Group, Carrizo Sand, Sparta Sand, and Cockfield Formation of Tertiary age contain regional aquifers within the maximum potential repository depth of 3,000 feet. The Cretaceous units contain saltwater throughout the basin. The Tertiary units contain freshwater to varying distances downdip from outcrop areas in the basin. Natural flow directions and rates of movement of groundwater have been changed in the salt-dome basin by the withdrawl of freshwater and by the injection of wastes (principally oil-field brines) into saline aquifers. Except for the Sparta aquifer, ground-water flow directions are not well known because of a lack of potentiometric data. A regional test-drilling program, to collect the data needed to document concepts of the flow system and to quantify inputs to the planned ground-water flow model, has been proposed. The Sparta aquifer is being modeled because data are available for the unit. As regional test drilling provides data on other units, will be added to the model developed for the Sparta aquifer. This paper summarizes some of the information on the occurrence of potential local supplies of water in the Piceance Creek Basin-Uinta Basin areas of northwest Colorado and northeast Utah. The discussion is somewhat hypothetical in that it is restricted to the physical occurrence of water with emphasis on water resources in each basin. Of course, the many potential constraints on water use (including economics, water quality, legal and other institutional factors) are necessarily secondary to the ultimate constraint, its physical occurrence. Perhaps the most obvious constraint is that of water rights and water laws. The field data were taken from steady-state studies of the Chattahoochee River in Georgia, the Willamette River in Oregon, and the Arkansas River in Colorado. The data used to evaluate the models covered a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological conditions. The Willamette River is a large sluggish stream, whereas the Arkansas River is a small dynamic stream. The Chattahoochee River is of moderate size. Each stream has unique water-quality characteristics that test a wide range of model options. Although the Survey has never been a water-management or development agency, it has assisted agencies that are responsible for such developments, and commonly provides data and information for such purposes. Because reservoirs are an intergral part of most water-development projects, the Survey has been involved in reservoir-related studies since the 1880's. The largest and longest involvement has centered on providing information on streamflows and sediment transport related to existing and proposed reservoirs. During the late 1940's, the Survey greatly expanded its activities in evaporation research. More recently, ground water, including bank storage, has gained increased attention. Most of these studies were related primarily to questions of water quantity, and the Survey continues to be involved in studies of physical hydrology. In addition, in response to the increased concern with environmental quality during the past 20 years, the number of Survey studies of the chemical and biological aspects of lakes and reservoirs have increased considerably. </p><p>Prompted by the recent Centennial (1879-1979) of the U.S. Geological Survey, it is appropriate to assess the Survey's contributions to the hydrology of lakes and reservoirs. Both natural lakes and manmade reservoirs are included in this report. 1 This report includes studies in which lakes or reservoirs are the principal topics. It does not include reports of general water resources of an area in which lakes are discussed as part of that area. This report also does not include data reports in which the data are merely tabulated. The types of reports listed herein include studies of existing or proposed water bodies and associated fluxes of water to and from these water bodies. </p><p>This report does not include geological or paleobiological studies of ancient lakes. This report does, however, include geological studies of proposed reservoir sites. </p><p>This bibliography has three parts. The first part is an alphabetical listing that gives complete references to the given reports. Part 2 is a listing by topics, and only the authors, date of publication, and cross-reference to the State are given. Six general categories are considered: Lake hydrology; interaction of lakes and streamflow, including geological studies of reservoir sites; interaction of lakes and atmospheric water; interaction of lakes. and ground water; chemical and biological limnology; and sediment studies. The first four consist of studies of physical characteristics of lakes, and the last two of water-quality characteristics. The category of lake hydrology includes general studies of lakes that are not easily grouped into one of the more specific categories of physical characteristics. For example, it includes water-budget studies where all aspects of hydrology are discussed. It also includes studies&nbsp;of hydrodynamics of lakes as well as studies of lake-level fluctuations.&nbsp;</p><p>The category of interaction of lakes and streamflow includes preimpoundment studies of streamflow discharge for reservoir design, and studies of the effects of existing reservoirs on streamflow and channel characteristics. Also included in this category are geological studies of river valleys for proposed reservoir sites. The category of interaction of lakes and atmospheric water includes primarily studies of evaporation. The interaction of lakes and ground water includes studies of bank storage. The category of chemical and biological studies was not subdivided into more specific types because of the virtually inseparable relation between chemistry and biology in most studies. </p><p>This bibliography provided much of the information for two papers that discuss the history of U.S. Geological Survey studies of lakes and reservoirs. Data were collected from April 1979 through June 1981. Runoff during the study period varied greatly with the majority of inflow occurring between December and May of each year. During 1980 and 1981 (through July 1981) precipitation totals at Lake Gregory were the maximum and minimum for the 19-year period of record. The average annual precipitation for the 3-year period 1979-81 was 47.4 inches, almost 10 inches greater than the long-term average, 1962-81, of 37.8 inches. Surface-water runoff in the Lake Gregory basin is highly dependent on annual precipitation, and total outflow for the 1980 water year and partial total for the 1981 (through June) water year was 7,230 acre-feet and 400 acre-feet, respectively. The folds probably were formed as a result of differential sediment loading when eolian sand dunes of the overlying Summerville Formation of Middle Jurassic age migrated over soft, chemically precipitated, lime muds of the Todilto shortly after their deposition in a regressive, mixed fresh and saline lacustrine or marine environment of deposition. \r\n\r\nEncroachment of Summerville eolian dunes over soft Todilto lime muds was apparently a local phenomenon and was restricted to postulated beltlike zones which trended radially across the Todilto coastline toward the receding body of water. Intraformational folding is believed to be confined to the pathways of individual eolian dunes or clusters of dunes within the dune belts. During the process of sediment loading by migrating sand dunes, layers of Todilto lime mud were differentially compacted, contorted, and dewatered, producing both small- and large-scale plastic deformation structures, including convolute laminations, mounds, rolls, folds, and small anticlines and synclines. With continued compaction and dewatering, the mud, in localized areas, reached a point of desaturation at which sediment plasticity was lost. Prolonged loading by overlying dune sands thus caused faulting, shearing, fracturing, and jointing of contorted limestone beds. These areas or zones of deformation within the limestone became the preferred sites of epigenetic uranium mineralization because of the induced transmissivity created by sediment rupture. \r\n\r\nAlong most of the prograding Todilto coastline, adjacent to the eolian dune belts, both interdune and coastal sabkha environments dominated during Todilto-Summerville time. Sediments in coastal areas consisted mainly of clay, silt, sandy silt, and very fine-grained sand, which was apparently derived from the winnowing of the finer grained fraction of sediment from adjacent dune fields during periods of eolian activity. Most of the sabkha sediments were probably carried in airborne suspension to the low-lying, ground-water-saturated coastal areas, where they were deposited as relatively uniform blanket-like layers. Deposition of sabkha deposits was apparently slow and uniform over most of the Todilto coastal areas and crested only small-scale deformation features in underlying Todilto rocks.
