Neither design would cause more than a 0.1-foot increase in water level of the 50-year flood nor more than a 0.2-foot increase in water level of the 100-year flood above levels that would occur during these floods under present channel conditions. The discharges used in the analyses were 55,200 cubic feet per second for the 50-year flood and 63,000 cubic feet per second for the 100-year flood. Mean flow velocities and water-surface elevations at 17 cross sections are given for both bridge designs and are compared with those that would occur under present conditions. Springs, wells less than 200 feet deep, and wells greater than 200 feet deep were observed to have different water qualities. Overall, the ground water exists as two systems: a mosaic of shallow, chemically dynamic, and localized recharge-discharge cells superimposed on a deeper, chemically static regional system. Water chemistry is highly variable in the shallow system; whereas, waters containing sodium and bicarbonate characterize the deeper system. \r\n\r\nWithin the shallow system, springs and wells less than 200 feet deep show predominantly sodium and sulfate enrichment processes from recharge to discharge. These processes are consistent with the observed aquifer mineralogy and aqueous chemistry. However, intermittent mixing with downward moving recharge waters or upward moving deeper waters, and bacterially catalyzed sulfate reduction, may cause apparent reversals in these processes.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O. :\r\nfor sale by the Supt. of Docs.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2076","usgsCitation":"Lee, R.W., 1981, Geochemistry of water in the Fort Union formation of the northern Powder River basin, southeastern Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2076, iv, 17 p. :ill., maps ;23 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2076.","productDescription":"iv, 17 p. :ill., maps ;23 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":27657,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2076/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27658,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2076/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27659,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2076/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138496,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2076/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1de4b07f02db6a9c4f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, Roger W.","contributorId":105273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Roger","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144663,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The aquifer is under water-table conditions and in hydraulic contact with the river, so that pumping wells induces recharge from the river. Direct recharge to the aquifer from precipitation and runoff occurs throughout the valley floor. Chemical analyses since 1972 have indicated no water-quality deterioration from toxic substances, including pesticides. Geohydrologic conditions at each of the six well fields were evaluated to determine the feasibility of a monitoring system to provide warning of contamination before it reaches a pumping center. Potential contamination sources in the area are landfills, gravel pits, industrial sites, and transportation corridors. Only two of the well fields have wells that could be used for monitoring; at most sites, two or more wells would need to be installed to provide minimal means of detecting contaminants migrating toward a pumping center. Annual runoff from the individual streams ranged from 460 to 7,070 acre-feet, and discharges ranged from 0.2 to 110 cubic feet per second. During the 4 years, the five streams delivered 31,000 tons of sediment, which averaged about 75 percent gravel and sand, 15 percent silt, and 10 percent clay, to the lake. Annual quantities ranged from 1,500 to 11,000 tons; individual streams furnished 20 to 5,200 tons annually. Measured sediment transport at the stream mouths ranged from 1 to 13,200 milligrams per liter and from 0.001 to 1,420 tons per day; sediment concentrations up to 63,200 milligrams per liter were measured at upstream tributary sites.

Estimated annual sediment yields of principal drainage basins ranged from 3 to 930 tons per square mile from undeveloped areas and from 26 to 5,000 tons per square mile from developed areas; yields for developed areas appeared to average about 10 times those of undeveloped areas, and roadways apparently were the major source. The probability of spill occurrences, likely movement of oil slicks, and locations of resources vulnerable to spilled oil were analyzed. The model predicted movement of the center of spill mass and estimated the times between spill occurrence and contact with various resources, to allow a qualitative assessment of oil characteristics at the time of contact; no direct computation was made of weathering and cleanup. The model also assumed that any oil spilled under ice would remain in place, unchanged, until spring breakup. Ice movements, or travel of oil under ice, if occurring, would affect the results in a manner not directly predictable at this time. The combined results of spill occurrence and spill movement predictions yielded estimates of the overall risks associated with development of the proposed lease area. Assuming that oil exists in the lease area (a 99.3-percent chance) it is estimated that the leasing of the tracts proposed for OCS Sale 71 will result in an expected 9.2 oilspills (of 1,000 barrels or larger) over the lease lifetime of 25 years. This estimate is based on historic oilspill accident data for platforms and pipelines on the U.S. OCS (Gulf of Mexico and California). The estimated probability that land will be contacted by one or more oilspills (of 1,000 barrels or larger) that have been at sea less than 30 days (not counting any time trapped under ice) is greater than 99.5 percent. If oilspill accident data for Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, is used in the analysis, it is estimated that 5.6 oilspills (1,000 barrels or larger) will occur over the lease lifetime. The estimated probability that one or more oilspills (1,000 barrels or larger)will occur and contact land is99 percent. The results of a recent experimental cleanup operation for oilspills under ice in Canadian Arctic waters showed a substantial degree of success; this should be considered in evaluating impacts of spills predicted by this model. Oilspill occurrence probabilities are high primarily because of the large amount of oil believed to be present in the area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8213","usgsCitation":"Samuels, W., Hopkins, D., and Lanfear, K., 1981, An oilspill risk analysis for the Beaufort Sea, Alaska (proposed sale 71)outer continental shelf lease area: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-13, viii, 111 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8213.","productDescription":"viii, 111 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143321,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0013/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38734,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0013/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db684199","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Samuels, W.B.","contributorId":85958,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Samuels","given":"W.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162281,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hopkins, Dorothy","contributorId":11614,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hopkins","given":"Dorothy","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162279,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lanfear, K.J.","contributorId":14392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lanfear","given":"K.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162280,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The computer program generated estimated values at the center of each 1-mile section in the Western Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 1 and facilitated contouring of selected values that are needed in the effective management of ground water for irrigation. The kriging technique produced objective and reproducible maps that illustrated hydrologic conditions in the Ogallala aquifer, the principal source of water in west-central Kansas. Maps of the aquifer, which use a 3-year average, included the 1978-80 water-table altitudes, which ranged from about 2,580 to 3,720 feet; the 1978-80 saturated thicknesses, which ranged from about 0 to 250 feet; and the percentage changes in saturated thickness from 1950 to 1978-80, which ranged from about a 50-percent increase to a 100-percent decrease. A map showing errors of estimate also was provided as a measure of reliability for the 1978-80 water-table altitudes. Errors of estimate ranged from 2 to 24 feet. As a result, the volcanic ash fell some 50 miles to the south in the Bull Run watershed, the principal water-supply source for the metropolitan area of Portland, Oreg. Water samples collected from three stream sites within the watershed were compared with samples collected during the same season in previous years. No detectable changes were noted in chemical characteristics. Precipitation samples collected immediately after the June 12-13 ash fall ranged in specific conductance from 20 to 41 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 4.0 to 4.3 pH units. Stream samples collected during the May-June period ranged in specific conductance from 18 to 28 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 6.7 to 7.5 pH units. Volcanic-ash samples were collected and analyzed for particle size, chemical composition, and weight. Significant differences in particle size of ash were found in samples from two separate eruptions. In the outcrop area of the Cockfield quifer the potentiometric surface is strongly affected by recharge from precipitation, by topography, and by drainage of the aquifer by streams. The potentiometric surface slopes downward generally to the west away from the area of outcrop and is strongly affected by large ground-water withdrawals in the Jackson and Greenville areas. Historically, water levels in or near the outcrop of the Cockfield aquifer have shown little or no long-term changes, but in much of the confined part of the aquifer during the past 20 years, water levels have declined from 1 to 2 feet per year.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr811053","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Mississippi Department of Natural Resources and Bureau of Land and Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Wasson, B.E., 1981, Potentiometric map of the Cockfield Aquifer in Mississippi, fall, 1980: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1053, 1 Plate: 23.04 x 34.60 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811053.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 23.04 x 34.60 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":397181,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1053/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":173220,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1053/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Mississippi","otherGeospatial":"Cockfield Aquifer","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -91.219482421875,\n 31.512995857454676\n ],\n [\n -88.494873046875,\n 31.512995857454676\n ],\n [\n -88.494873046875,\n 34.17090836352573\n ],\n [\n -91.219482421875,\n 34.17090836352573\n ],\n [\n -91.219482421875,\n 31.512995857454676\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db683266","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wasson, B. The sulfide deposits occur together with barite, tuff, sandstone, shale, chert, and keratophyre flows and sills. The three main occurrences of the stratiform zinc-lead-barium deposits in the Red Dog Creek area are: (1) thinly-bedded stratiform sulfide minerals in organic-rich Mississippian shale and chert; (2) massive sulfide vein and breccia fillings in Mississippian shale; and (3) massive stratiform barite lenses and nodules in chert and shale of the Siksikpuk Formation. The Drenchwater Creek area has only the first type. Sulfide-bearing zones of up to several thousand meters long occur in both areas with up to 19.5 percent Zn, 9.5 percent Pb, and locally more than 150 ppm Ag. Radiolaria from sulfide-bearing chert indicate in the Red Dog Creek area a Mississippian age of sulfide deposition. K/Ar ages of 319 + 10 m.y. and 330 + 17 m.y. obtained from biotite in keratophyre associated with sulfide-bearing tuff and chert in the Drenchwater Creek area indicate a Mississippian age of sulfide deposition.

Sulfur isotope analyses of sulfur-bearing minerals from the Red Dog Creek area indicate that a combination of sea water sulfate and deep-seated sulfur was probably the source of the barite sulfate whereas sulfur in the sulfide minerals may have had a deep-seated source. Sulfur isotope values for sphalerite and galena are similar in vein and stratiform occurrences. Using sulfur isotope geothermetry, spalerite-galena pairs yield paleotemperatures of between 115° and 305° C. Lead isotope analyses of galena from both the Red Dog Creek and Drenchwater Creek areas yield Triassic model ages of approximately 200 m.y. Lead isotope data from both areas approximate typical orogene, i.e., Andean-type arc, or mature island-arc values and exclude ocean floor rifting for the generation of lead. The isotopic, petrologic, and field data indicate the stratiform zinc-lead-barium deposits in the Red Dog Creek and Drenchwater Creek areas formed during a short-lived period of Mississippian submarine volcanism in either an incipient Andean-type arc, or mature island arc environment.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81355","usgsCitation":"Silberman, M.L., Field, C.W., and Berry, A.L., 1981, Proceedings of the Symposium on Mineral Deposits of the Pacific Northwest: Geological Society of America, Cordilleran Section meeting at Corvallis, Oregon, March 20-21, 1980: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-355, x, 345 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81355.","productDescription":"x, 345 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142569,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0355/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":431450,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0355/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Canada, United States","state":"Alaska, British Columbia, California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.34611710113654,\n              32.65609020834708\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.34611710113654,\n              71.66471626213414\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.5697252028482,\n              71.66471626213414\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.5697252028482,\n              32.65609020834708\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.34611710113654,\n              32.65609020834708\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ee4b07f02db66045a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Silberman, Miles L.","contributorId":92536,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Silberman","given":"Miles","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":907062,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Field, C.
