Annual runoff from the individual streams ranged from 460 to 7,070 acre-feet, and discharges ranged from 0.2 to 110 cubic feet per second. During the 4 years, the five streams delivered 31,000 tons of sediment, which averaged about 75 percent gravel and sand, 15 percent silt, and 10 percent clay, to the lake. Annual quantities ranged from 1,500 to 11,000 tons; individual streams furnished 20 to 5,200 tons annually. Measured sediment transport at the stream mouths ranged from 1 to 13,200 milligrams per liter and from 0.001 to 1,420 tons per day; sediment concentrations up to 63,200 milligrams per liter were measured at upstream tributary sites.

Estimated annual sediment yields of principal drainage basins ranged from 3 to 930 tons per square mile from undeveloped areas and from 26 to 5,000 tons per square mile from developed areas; yields for developed areas appeared to average about 10 times those of undeveloped areas, and roadways apparently were the major source. Erosion disequilibrium caused by prestudy flash floods on two creeks continues to manifest itself through high natural sediment yields. The Second Creek flood of 1967 yielded about 75,000 tons in one afternoon.

Fluvial nutrient transport seems quantitatively related to magnitudes of sediment and water transport. Movement rates of organic nitrogen and particulate phosphorus were greater than rates of other nutrient species moving to the lake.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr802045","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Nevada Division of Water Resources and Washoe County","usgsCitation":"Glancy, P.A., 1981, Streamflow, sediment transport, and nutrient transport at Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, 1970-73: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-2045, vii, 89 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr802045.","productDescription":"vii, 89 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":350938,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/2045/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140972,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/2045/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Lake Tahoe","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120,\n              39.24\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.9,\n              39.24\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.9,\n              39.33\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              39.33\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              39.24\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4c74","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Glancy, Patrick A.","contributorId":184076,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Glancy","given":"Patrick","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159179,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Geologic units exposed in the North Horn Mountain area range in age from Late Cretaceous to Holocene and contain two mineable seams of Cretaceous coal. The area is in the drainage basin of the San Rafael River, in the Colorado River Basin. Runoff from the mountain is ephemeral. This runoff to the San Rafael River is by way of Cottonwood and Perron Creeks and represents less than 10 percent of their average annual runoff. Probable peak discharges (100-year flood) for the ephemeral streams draining North Horn Mountain are estimated to range from 200 to 380 cubic feet per second.

The chemical quality of surface water in the area is good. The water is generally of a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type with average dissolved solids less than 500 milligrams per liter. Annual sediment yield in most of the area ranges from 0.1 to 0.2 acre-foot per square mile but locally is as high as 1.0 acre-foot per square mile. Most of the sediment is eroded during cloudbursts.

Most of the ground water above the coal on North Horn Mountain probably is in perched aquifers. These aquifers support the flow of small seeps and springs. In some areas, the regional water table appears to extend upward into the coal. The principal source of recharge is precipitation that probably moves to aquifers along faults, joints, or fractures. This movement is apparently quite rapid. The dissolved-solids concentrations of ground water in the North Horn Mountain area range from less than 500 to about 1,000 milligrams per liter.

Coal mining on North Horn Mountain should have minor \"effects on the quantity and quality of surface water. The maximum predicted decrease in the annual flow of Ferron and Cottonwood Creeks is less than U percent. The sediment loads of affected streams could be significantly increased if construction were to take place during the summer cloudburst season. Subsidence, which usually follows underground coal mining, could create rock fractures through which a perched aquifer might be drained, thus depleting the flow of seeps or springs fed by that aquifer. It is considered unlikely that the mining will adversely affect the chemical quality of the ground water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.3133/ofr81141","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management","usgsCitation":"Graham, M., Tooley, J.E., and Price, D., 1981, Preliminary hydrologic evaluation of the North Horn Mountain coal-resource area, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-141, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81141.","productDescription":"34 p.","numberOfPages":"34","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":141972,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0141/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36811,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0141/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"North Horn Mountain","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db6732e3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Graham, M.J.","contributorId":61424,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Graham","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159277,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tooley, John E.","contributorId":83528,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tooley","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159278,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Price, Don","contributorId":30608,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Price","given":"Don","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159276,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

All the wells tapping the aquifer have been located for the owners' convenience and are randomly located in relation to lineaments and fracture traces.
\n
Lineaments and fracture traces were observed throughout the study area, and those most easily interpreted are shown on a map at a scale of 1:48,000. Pleistocene drift, averaging 25-30 feet thick, covers most of the bedrock, but did not restrict the mapping of lineaments and fracture traces from aerial photographs.
\n
The lineament and fracture-trace map indicates probable locations of vertical or near vertical fractures in the bedrock. Wells drilled on these mapped features may yield adequate supplies for domestic use. Larger yields may be available in several areas of southwest Jennings County where lineaments parallel major stream channels.
\n
Well placement is important in this area, as fractures are a principal source of water to wells. In areas of fractured bedrock, the most productive well locations are at the intersections of two or more mapped lineaments or fracture traces and at the lowest local altitude. Use of the lineament and fracture-trace map will not guarantee a sufficent supply of ground water but will minimize the chance of drilling an inadequate well.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Indianapolis, IN","doi":"10.3133/ofr811120","collaboration":"Indiana Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army, Jefferson Proving Ground","usgsCitation":"Greeman, T., 1981, Lineaments and fracture traces, Jennings County and Jefferson Proving Ground, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1120, iv, 17 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811120.","productDescription":"iv, 17 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm.","startPage":"1","endPage":"17","numberOfPages":"20","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":346,"text":"Indiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":36833,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1120/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142834,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1120/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36834,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1120/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","county":"Jennings","otherGeospatial":"Jefferson Proving Ground","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-85.203,38.9167],[-85.2023,38.6911],[-85.214,38.6955],[-85.215,38.6963],[-85.2317,38.7113],[-85.2395,38.7209],[-85.2453,38.7276],[-85.2505,38.7322],[-85.2511,38.7326],[-85.2628,38.7377],[-85.2819,38.7401],[-85.2852,38.7403],[-85.2988,38.7405],[-85.3201,38.7383],[-85.3206,38.7382],[-85.333,38.7351],[-85.3358,38.7347],[-85.3607,38.7306],[-85.3796,38.7316],[-85.3811,38.7318],[-85.3952,38.7344],[-85.4044,38.7361],[-85.416,38.7357],[-85.4168,38.7357],[-85.4339,38.7289],[-85.4382,38.7256],[-85.4398,38.7243],[-85.4533,38.704],[-85.4539,38.703],[-85.4551,38.6967],[-85.4544,38.6886],[-85.4536,38.6847],[-85.451,38.6803],[-85.4507,38.6797],[-85.4425,38.6681],[-85.4421,38.6674],[-85.437,38.6563],[-85.4371,38.6459],[-85.4374,38.6216],[-85.4376,38.6115],[-85.4346,38.597],[-85.4287,38.5872],[-85.4279,38.5861],[-85.4785,38.5866],[-85.479,38.5925],[-85.4967,38.5926],[-85.4971,38.6071],[-85.5701,38.6063],[-85.5702,38.6512],[-85.5704,38.6784],[-85.6081,38.6787],[-85.6089,38.7077],[-85.6149,38.7077],[-85.6296,38.7078],[-85.6361,38.7079],[-85.6443,38.7079],[-85.6461,38.708],[-85.6464,38.7302],[-85.6641,38.7303],[-85.6646,38.7389],[-85.6847,38.7386],[-85.6844,38.8152],[-85.6915,38.8157],[-85.6944,38.8175],[-85.6974,38.8144],[-85.7033,38.8162],[-85.7056,38.8189],[-85.7062,38.8244],[-85.7126,38.8285],[-85.7156,38.8285],[-85.7197,38.8258],[-85.718,38.8236],[-85.7192,38.8231],[-85.7268,38.8245],[-85.731,38.8245],[-85.7363,38.8223],[-85.7381,38.8196],[-85.7428,38.8187],[-85.7511,38.8192],[-85.754,38.8206],[-85.7582,38.8193],[-85.757,38.8161],[-85.7618,38.8134],[-85.7635,38.8157],[-85.7689,38.8148],[-85.7689,38.8112],[-85.7719,38.8094],[-85.7772,38.813],[-85.7801,38.8121],[-85.7831,38.8072],[-85.7949,38.8077],[-85.7953,38.8245],[-85.7959,38.8952],[-85.7964,38.9042],[-85.7963,38.9124],[-85.7969,38.9704],[-85.7972,38.999],[-85.7983,39.0683],[-85.7988,39.0856],[-85.7989,39.1291],[-85.688,39.1307],[-85.5664,39.1325],[-85.4403,39.1954],[-85.2966,39.268],[-85.2204,39.3072],[-85.2186,39.308],[-85.0652,39.3082],[-85.0732,39.2675],[-85.0824,39.2195],[-85.0903,39.1788],[-85.0983,39.1327],[-85.1057,39.0906],[-85.1222,39.0006],[-85.1305,38.9707],[-85.1324,38.9617],[-85.135,38.9481],[-85.1389,38.9296],[-85.2034,38.9294],[-85.203,38.9167]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Jefferson\",\"state\":\"IN\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a505e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greeman, T. The sites are generally either U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations or the mouths of gaged streas. Each site is identified by latitude and longitude, by the general stream type, and by the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute topographic map on which it can be located. The gaging stations are furhter identified by a downstream order number, a county code, and a nearby city or town. In addition to drainage areas, the surface areas of lakes are shown for the elevation given on the topographic map. These data were retrieved from the Surface Water Index developed and maintained by the Hydrologic Surveillance section of the Florida District Office, U.S. Geological Survey. With the development of technology, exploration, development, and production are being extended to include areas off the coast of southwest Florida and deep-water areas near the Mississippi River Delta. Development in both areas requires careful analyses of local considerations. The hydrocarbon potential of the region, while not well established in the frontier portions, generally remains favorable. A total of 482 fields have been discovered to date in the federally regulated part of the Gulf of Mexico. Reserve estimates have been made for the 435 producing fields in the region. Through December 31, 1980, those fields have produced 5.0 billion barrels of oil and condensate, and 48.7 trillion cubic feet of gas. Remaining recoverable reserves are 3.1 billion barrels of oil and 40.2 trillion cubic feet of gas. Estimates of undiscovered recoverable resources for the Gulf of Mexico are 6.6 billion barrels of oil and 71.9 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Since enactment of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act in 1953, there have been 42 oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico. An average of three lease sales per year are scheduled through 1986. Since 1953, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has leased 3,119 tracts in the Gulf of Mexico; 1,825 leases are currently active. The distribution of leased tracts exhibits a regionwide pattern as shown by Lease Sales A62, 62, A66, and 66. Proposed Lease Sales 67, 69, 72, and 74 will probably continue that pattern. Tracts off the coast of southwest Florida in the Charlotte Harbor, Howell Hook, and Pulley Ridge Areas will be offered in upcoming sales. Operations on tracts in deepwater areas slated for future sales may require additional technology.

Exploration, development, and production in the Gulf of Mexico Region are continuing at a rapid pace throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Between January 1, 1980, and April 15, 1981, 197 initial plans of exploration and 165 supplemental plans of exploration were submitted to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). During the same period, 107 initial and 131 supplemental plans of development/production were submitted to the USGS. As of May 1981, there were 121 offshore mobile drilling units operating in the Gulf of Mexico.

Pipelines continue to be the preferred mode of transport for Gulf of Mexico OCS oil and gas production. Pipeline additions to the existing network average 69 miles (111 km) per month. At any given time, numerous pipeline projects are under way in the Gulf of Mexico. To supplement OCS oil and gas production several deepwater port projects, designed to handle imported crude oil, are being planned or constructed in the region. The process of transportation planning in the Gulf of Mexico is done by industry and government through BLM's Intergovernmental Planning Program and its Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG). The RTWG has completed the First Edition Gulf of Mexico Regional Transportation Management Plan.

The nearshore and onshore facilities in the Gulf of Mexico service both the domestic onshore and offshore oil and gas industry as well as the global market. Most of the major centers along the Gulf Coast, including Houston, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Freeport, Texas; New Orleans, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Morgan City, and Houma, Louisiana; Pascagoula, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama; and Port Manatee, Florida, have ties to the offshore industry. A wide array of services and support industries, ranging from small independent vendors to major international manufacturing contractors, can be found within the region. Profiles of selected centers reveal typical industries and patterns of activity that are characteristic throughout the Gulf Coast region.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81620","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management","usgsCitation":"Havran, K.J., 1981, Gulf of Mexico summary report 2, August 1981: A revision of Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas activities in the Gulf of Mexico and their onshore impacts: A summary report, September 1980: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-620, Report: x, 79 p.; 6 Plates: 34.91 x 15.86 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81620.","productDescription":"Report: x, 79 p.; 6 Plates: 34.91 x 15.86 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413813,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":413812,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":413811,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142942,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":413810,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":413809,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":413808,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":413807,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0620/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas","otherGeospatial":"Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.53573046304996,\n              26.019482367005608\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.34267159501141,\n              26.019482367005608\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.34267159501141,\n              30.325598976571015\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.53573046304996,\n              30.325598976571015\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.53573046304996,\n              26.019482367005608\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a1c9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Havran, Kenneth J.","contributorId":40983,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havran","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159620,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Both watersheds were underlain by stratified sedimentary rocks containing two perched aquifers above clay beds which underlaid the major coal seams. Mining involved removing the overburden rocks, including the top aquifer, stripping the coal seam, and recontouring the overburden spoils to the approximate premining shape of the watershed.

Water levels in the top aquifer declined as mining neared the watersheds, but destruction of observation wells precluded a record of any decline during mining in the watersheds. Depletion of the top aquifer was reflected in base flow of streams, which was reduced and more highly mineralized after mining. Initial saturated thickness of replaced overburden spoils ranged from 0 to 4 feet, based on data from observation wells installed immediately after reclamation. Down-hole specific-conductance measurements of water in the spoils suggest the presence of more highly mineralized water than that in the premining top aquifer. No significant effects of mining are evident on ground-water levels or quality beneath the stripped coal.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Seventy-three streams were sampled three times during the 1979 and 1980 water years for specific conductance, pH, acidity, alkalinity, dissolved and total iron, dissolved and total manganese, dissolved sulfate, and dissolved solids. Benthic invertebrate populations were determined and botom material samples were analyzed for metals. Sixteen streams had pH, acidity, alkalinity, total iron, total manganese, and dissolved sulfate indicative of acid-mine drainage. These streams were most common in the Redbank and Blacklick Creek basins and in the Conemaugh and lower Kiskiminetas River basins. Benthic invertebrates were not found in 11 of 64 streams sampled. An additional 13 streams had low benthic invertebrate diversity indices. Low diversity indices were most common in the southern part of area 3. Clay content increases upslope and up-estuary. Principal clay minerals are montmorillanite, illite, and chlorite; two clay mineral suites are present: (1) muddy flat suite with clay containing 44% montmorillonite, and (2) sandy flat suite with clay composition of 88% montmorillonite.

Heavy minerals make up approximately four percent of the tidal flat sediment. Distribution of heavy minerals reflect their source with (1) heavy minerals most abundant near the beach on flats to the north where they were eroded out of terrace deposits, and (2) relatively greater heavy mineral concentrations (supplied by the Naselle River) across the entire flat to the south. The composition of the heavy mineral suite is mainly clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, hornblende, epidote, and opaque minerals. This mineral suite represents several sources including rivers, ocean and ocean beaches, and reworked local Tertiary and Quaternary deposits.

Tidal flat sediments are approximately 90% light minerals, mostly quartz. The light fraction also contains small quantities of lithic fragments, pumice, vegetation, and biogenic shell fragments. Tertiary and Quaternary terrace deposits are the major source of most of the light material.

Fossils make up less than one percent of the bottom sediment. Two foram assemblages are present: (1) a modern shallow-water assemblage characterized by Trochammina inflata, found mainly in muddy flats near rivers, and (2) a relic deep-water assemblage (Eocene to Cretaceous) characterized by such species as Bathysiphon and Cyclammina found predominantly on the sandy flats. Macrofossils consists of shells of the modern tidal flat mollusc assemblage.

Organic sediments were mostly carbon (1%). The model provides a method of determining instantaneous discharge for flows from -8,000 to 12,000 cubic feet per second. The currently used slope-rating method can be utilized to compute discharge only under steady and high-flow conditions. Unsteady flow frequently occurs in the Saginaw River as a result of lake seiching.

Model computations are based on solution of the continuity and momentum flow equations, on hydraulic characteristics of Saginaw River, and on time-dependent boundary conditions. An implicit, finite-difference technique is used to solve the one-dimensional flow equations. Channel storage and conveyance characteristics were obtained from data collected during a 1979 field survey and through model calibration. Boundary conditions are specified by stage or discharge data at the model extremities. Optionally, wind velocity data are incorporated in the flow simulations.

The model can simulate instantaneous stage and discharge data and summarize or plot the data. Simulations of low-flows are sensitive to small errors in stage data and to gentle breezes. The river banks and many areas adjacent to the river support thick stands of cottonwood and willow trees. Brush, grass, pasture land, and cultivated fields occupy most of the remaining area. This is the habitat for many types of wildlife that live in the area or stop over in the area during annual migrations. Both sandhill cranes and whooping cranes are part of the annual migration. There is concern that water-management changes, such as surface-water diversions or ground-water withdrawals for irrigation, may alter the hydrologic environment of the wetland areas and be harmful to the wildlife habitat. In order to determine what affect changes in water management might have on ground-water levels in the wetland areas, detailed data were collected from Crane Meadows Wildlife Area, which is on an island in the Platte River near Grand Island, Nebr. Ground-water levels beneath the island respond to changes in river stage, to recharge from snowmelt and precipitation, and to evapotranspiration by riparian vegetation and from areas where the water table is close to the land surface. The data show that ground-water levels respond rapidly to changes in river stage-usually within 24 hours for distances up to 2,500 feet from the edge of the river. Thus changes in river stage due to changes in surface-water diversions will not have a long-term effect on ground-water levels. Changes in ground-water withdrawals will have the double effect of changing ground-water levels due to changes in drawdown and due to changes in river stage caused by the effects of pumping on river flow. These effects will develop slowly and be long lasting.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr811109","usgsCitation":"Hurr, R.T., 1981, Ground-water hydrology of the Mormon Island Crane Meadows wildlife area near Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1109, iv, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811109.","productDescription":"iv, 16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":398556,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1109/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142936,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1109/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nebraska","county":"Hall County","otherGeospatial":"Mormon Island Crane Meadows wildlife area near Grand Island","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.37741851806639,\n              40.82160395916235\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.36797714233398,\n              40.82160395916235\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.36797714233398,\n              40.82712467108559\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.37741851806639,\n              40.82712467108559\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.37741851806639,\n              40.82160395916235\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668a6e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hurr, R.
