Water-quality data in the Salt Fork Arkansas and Cimarron River basins within Oklahoma, through 1978, were examined for water type and suitability for public water supply and irrigation use. Of 76 stations with available data, 32 stations or 42 percent were considered to have sufficient data for analysis. The classification of water type was based on the relation of the major ions: calcium, magnesium, sodium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, and chloride to each other within the range of measured specific conductance. The suitability for use as a public supply was based on the concentration distribution of selected constituents. The constituents selected were those with maximum contaminant levels established by regulation, or constituents for which recommended maximum limits have been established and for which historic data are available. The irrigation classification method of Wilcox was used to relate sodium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations and the salinity distribution to the use of the water for irrigation. Where data were available, the chance of phytotoxic effects by boron was discussed.

The findings were to be submitted for inclusion in an Environmental Impact Statement being assembled by Land Management Services of Jackson, Wyoming. The study area is being considered for possible drilling sites in the near future.
The project area lies on the southwest slope of the Gros Ventre Mountain Range in the Cache Creek-Little Granite Creek area in Teton County, north-western Wyoming. A total of 16 prehistoric sites and isolated finds were recorded within or immediately adjacent to the study area boundaries. The total surface area covered amounted to 1857 acres (or 5.7%) of the 32,580 acres included in the study. An intensive surface evaluation was completed of all staked projects (well locations and access roads) in the survey area. Exploratory or evaluative testing is recommended for the Getty Reserve well location and in one area on the NCRA well access route. Some form of further evaluation is recommended at thirteen other localities.
Fieldwork was conducted during September, 1980, by archeologists from Archeological Services. Subsequent analysis included the application of a model of site predictability based on the statistical analysis of environmental factors, such as slope, aspect, vegetation, soils, fauna and proximity to water.

User-defined plans of surface coal mining and agricultural development permit evaluation of potential changes in dissolved solids resulting from leaching of overburden material used to backfill mine pits and from withdrawal and return flow of irrigation water. Provision is made for simulation runs using increased streamflow from a proposed larger reservoir intended to replace the present Tongue River Reservoir. Simulations at mean streamflow indicated that mining 119,600 acres of federally leased coal tracts may increase by 4.8 percent the present annual dissolved-solids concentration in the Tongue River at Miles City. Simulations using the proposed Tongue River reservoir show substantial reductions in dissolved-solids concentration when paired with similar simulations using the present Tongue River Reservoir. When compared on a per-acre basis for the study area, the dewatering caused by irrigation increases dissolved-solids concentration more than the input of leachates from surface coal-mining operations. A key element in the planning is the determination of whether water quality of the river is suitable for recreation. A preliminary water-quality assessment of the river in Indianapolis on August 4-5, 1980, indicates that, during low-flow steady-state conditions, water quality of the river is suitable for partial body contact recreation (any contact with water up to, but not including, complete submergence). Dissolved-oxygen concentrations varied but were higher than the Indiana water-quality standards established to ensure conditions for the maintenance of a well-balanced, warm-water fish community. High fecal-coliform densities that have been observed in the White River during high stream-flow are probably caused by stormwater runoff from combined sewers. However, during the low-flow steady-state conditions on August 4-5, 1980, fecal coliform densities were within the Indiana standards for partial body contact recreation. Concentrations of organic matter (based on biochemical-oxygen demand and dissolved- and suspended-organic carbon concentrations), nutrients, and heavy metals in the White River were generally within the limits recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and were generally similar to values for other Indiana rivers. Chromium, copper, lead, zinc, and mercury are accumulating in bottom materials downstream from 30th Street (river mile 235.58). The source of these metals is probably stormwater runoff from combined sewer overflows. The phytoplankton densities of the White River were high (>500 cells per milliliter). The dominant phytoplankton species are indicative of rivers moderately affected by organic wastes. The highest cell concentrations, upstream from dams on the White River, significantly affected dissolved-oxygen concentration and pH.

The map is based on chemical analyses of water samples from springs, streams during base flow, and wells less than 1.000 feet deep. There are significant areal and vertical variations in the ground-water quality – especially in those areas where the dissolved-solids concentrations range from 100 to 1,000 and from 500 to 3,000 mg/L (milligrams per liter). Consequently, determination of the actual chemical quality of the ground-water, including concentrations of specific ions in any given locality, can be made only by special investigation.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in a cooperative investigative program with the Suwannee River Authority, has sampled a network of nine water-quality monitoring stations since 1968 to detect short- and long-term changes in surface-water quality in the Suwannee River. Two additional stations, Camp Branch near Genoa and Rocky Creek near Houston, were established in October 1978. In addition to this 11-station network, Deep Creek and Robinson Creek near Suwannee Valley, which originate in the Osceola National Forest and have been supported since April 1976 through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, have been included in this report.
The analyses of samples collected routinely included: nutrients, total organic carbon, and 5-day biological oxygen demand, bimonthly; trace metals, annually. The array of constituents sampled was expanded in October 1978 at three of the original nine stations to provide quality-of-water information for streams draining an industrial area: Rocky Creek near Belmont, Hunter Creek near Belmont, and Swift Creek at Facil. Data collected at these three sites now include: major chemical constituents, six times per year; radium-226, two times per year; and trace metals, one time per year. These constituents are determined in addition to nutrients, total organic carbon, and biological oxygen demand which continue to be collected six times per year.
All results of analyses of the water-quality samples collected from April 1978 to December 1979 remained within, or near, previously measured ranges and water-quality fluctuations were similar to those noted from data collected since 1970.

climatic characteristics as related to evapotranspiration in South Park, central Park County, Colorado","docAbstract":"Data collected from May through September in 1977, 1978, and 1979 at three stations were analyzed using an analysis of variance technique to determine variations in climatic characteristics in South Park, Colo. Knowledge of these climatic characteristics will aid in determining the amount of water that may be transferred from agricultural use in South Park to municipal use in the Denver metropolitan area. Daily minimum air temperature, daily average air temperature, cumulative wind, daily relative humidity, and daily solar radiation were statistically different between the three stations at the 1-percent level of significance. Daily maximum air temperature and daily pan evaporation were not significantly different between some stations. Daily precipitation was not significantly different between the three stations. Estimates of potential evapotranspiration made using the Penman equation were not significantly different between the three stations. The lack of spatial variations in the estimated potential evapotranspiration shows that no one climatic characteristic can be used as an indicator of spatial variation of potential evapotranspiration. Large variations in solar radiation between the three stations indicate that solar radiation needs to be measured at sites where evapotranspiration is being determined.
