Sampling was conducted at selected locations (stations) and depths over the period between January-December 1980 at approximately two week intervals. Stations were located in deep channels and adjacent shallow water areas from Calaveras Point in South San Francisco Bay to the town of Rio Vista on the Sacramento River and to the Three-Mile Slough on the San Joaquin River. Numerical values of salinity, temperature, and station locations are tabulated. The measurement site was located in the Gila River valley in east-central Arizona. The forage, panigrass (Panicum antidotale Retz.), grew from seed during the early summer of 1969 and after winterkill, regrew in 1970. Daily evapotranspiration estimates, which were based on energy budget measurements, ranged from a maximum of 9.2 millimeters to small amounts of condensation. Two daily values of substantial condensation (0.9 and 0.4 millimeter) were of dubious quality, but were retained in the record. The annual evapotranspiration was 989 millimeters, of which about 332 millimeters came from precipitation at the site. The water table fluctuated between 210 and 280 centimeters below land surface. However, the measurement site was near a wash, so that undocumented, shallower subterranean flows may have occurred. The high pH (9.0 to 9.3) and large dissolved-oxygen concentrations (8.7 to 10.8 milligrams per liter) on August 29 indicate significant primary production. Organic-nitrogen concentrations ranged from 1.1 to 3.0 milligrams per liter (as nitrogen). Ammonia-nitrogen concentrations ranged from 0.03 to 0.05 milligram per liter (as nitrogen). Orthophosphate concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 0.14 milligram per liter (as phosphorus). Total phosphorus ranged from 0.01 to 0.20 milligram per liter. In bottom-material samples, concentrations of organic-plus-ammonia nitrogen ranged from 5,400 to 10,000 milligrams per kilogram; total phosphorus concentrations ranged from 830 to 1,400 milligrams per kilogram; and inorganic-plus-organic carbon concentrations ranged from 70 to 106 grams per kilogram. Concentrations of DDT in bottom material did not exceed 43 micrograms per kilogram. Concentrations of DDD and of DDE exceeded 150 micrograms per kilogram in most bottom-material samples. Aldrin, chlordane, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, and lindane also were detected in bottom material. Eight water samples were collected during periods of low to moderate streamflow (less than 19 cubic feet per second). The water was hard to very hard (100 to 220 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate) and dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 112 to 244 milligrams per liter. Suspended-sediment concentrations were low (generally less than 5 milligrams per liter). Total phosphorus concentrations did not exceed 50 micrograms per liter, and total nitrogen concentrations were less than 1.9 milligrams per liter. Concentrations of most metals were less than 5 micrograms per liter, the exceptions being iron (110 to 210 micrograms per liter), manganese (20 to 80 micrograms per liter), and zinc (0 to 30 micrograms per liter). This model, using a weekly time step, simulated the transient interactions of these two systems for an initial-fill condition and general-operational condition. A sensitivity analysis was made to test the effects of possible errors in the description of aquifer characteristics on the model results. The initial-fill simulation indicated that to fill the reservoir when hydraulic connection between the surface-water system and the aquifer is simulated would take 2 additional years than if no connection was assumed. Simulated ground-water return flow to the river downstream of the proposed dam was about 85 percent of the estimated maximum values, computed under steady-state conditions in an earlier study. The general operation simulation indicated that during the period of lowest reservoir contents the aquifer provided about 80,000 acre-feet of recoverable storage to the reservoir 's capacity. Average return flow was only about 70 percent of the estimated maximum values computed in the earlier, steady-state analysis. Monthly ground-water outflow from the reservoir to the aquifer ranged from 55,200 to -10,400 acre-feet. Parameters tested for sensitivity, in order of decreasing sensitivity, were: Hydraulic conductivity, specific yield, hydraulic connection between reservoir and aquifer, local recharge, boundary conditions, and dam permeability. The probable error in the parameters tested would not seem to warrant significant new data collection. Since that time more modern instrumentation has allowed modification and further development beyond the basic single-tube fluid tiltmeter with a mechanical surface sensor. A number of instruments are discussed in connection with thermal errors in a paper by Bevan and Bilham [2] including one due to Huggett, et al. [3]. This particular instrument, the two-fluid tiltmeter, is the subject of this project. A laboratory single leg prototype developed by Terra Technology Corporation [4] was modified and expanded for use in a field test site in central California.</p><p>The two major differences in this fluid tiltmeter are the use of two parallel tubes filled with fluids of different thermal properties experiencing the same thermal environment and the design of the level sensors in the reservoirs. The latter being piezoelectric acoustic drivers (sonar type transducers) submerged in the liquid which detect the change in the surface height in the The water from wells open to the surficial aquifer generally meets quality standards recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public water supplies, except for concentrations of iron that for most wells are substantially greater than the recommended limit of 0.3 milligrams per liter. Data from 12 test wells drilled to the top of the Hawthorn formation, about 100 feet below land surface, indicate that the productive zones and confining beds in the surficial aquifer are discontinuous. Test well yields from individual zones range from less than 1 to 42 gallons per minute from depths between 20 and 100 feet below land surface. The most productive zones were generally found in the Tillman Ridge area, about 10 square miles in the west-central part of the area of investigation. Analysis of an aquifer test on a well in the Tillman Ridge area indicates a transmissivity of about 6,500 to 7,000 feet squared per day. The best local source of good quality water for development of a relatively large water supply is in the vicinity of Tillman Ridge. Studies were completed in the Fort Worth metropolitan area at the end of the 1977 water year, and in the Dallas metropolitan area at the end of the 1979 water year.</p><p>The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing streamflow network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. Streamflow was measured and water samples were collected three times during the study period. Samples of bottom material were collected in September. Concentrations of dissolved solids ranged from 45 to 391 milligrams per liter. Water hardness ranged from 31 milligrams per liter (soft) to 280 milligrams per liter (very hard). Fecal-coliform bacteria densities ranged from 40 to an estimated 540 colonies per 100 milliliters and may have exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion for bathing waters. Total nitrogen concentrations ranged from 0.90 to 2.2 milligrams per liter. Total phosphorus concentrations often exceeded the State standard and ranged from 0.08 to 0.46 milligrams per liter. Low dissolved-oxygen concentrations (2.5 to 5.4 milligrams per liter at midday) were measured in Larkin Creek and a major tributary. Iron (290 to 9,800 micrograms per liter), manganese (60 to 3,100 micrograms per liter), and mercury (0.0 to 0.2 micrograms per liter) concentrations at times exceeded Environmental Protection Agency criteria for domestic use or freshwater aquatic life. High concentrations of toxaphene (20 to 170 micrograms per kilogram dry weight) were present in all bottom-material samples. In two water samples, concentrations of dieldrin (0.01 micrograms per liter) exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency criterion for freshwater aquatic life. Polychlorinated biphenyls, several insecticides, and several herbicides (including 2, 4, 5-T) were present in water or bottom-material samples. Cross-sectional properties and water-quality characteristics were determined for flows of 6,100 to 8,440 cubic feet per second during June 8 to 12; 750 to 1,760 cubic feet per second during August 24 to 27; and 1,790 to 1,630 cubic feet per second during November 3 to 7, 1980. Cross-sectional areas measured ranged from 4,620 square feet to 17,000 square feet. Flow velocities ranged from 2.00 feet per second during June to less than 0.10 foot per second during August and November. Water quality in the reach was generally good. A small increase of total ammonia nitrogen occurred downstream of the Coeur d'Alene sewage-treatment plant. The data include continuous streamflow at four sites, monthly stream water quality at seven sites, ground-water levels and periodic ground-water quality in four wells from 1972 through 1978.</p><p>Pumpage from the Cohansey Sand in the study area was lower than anticipated because of a slowdown in construction. The average pumpage of 0.48 million gallons per day during 1978 had little effect on ground-water levels.</p><p>Dissolved-solids concentrations were lower in a well upgradient from the urbanized area. Elevated levels of dissolved solids, specific conductance, chloride, nitrate, and phosphorus were found in the shallow ground water in the vicinity of the Winslow wastewater treatment plant because of effluent infiltration ponds. Nitrate was greatly reduced in October 1974 by a change in the treatment process, which increased denitrification. Phosphorus concentrations in the ground water remained elevated, however.</p><p>Water from the most urbanized drainage basin was a magnesium bicarbonate type, while the less developed basins had sodium chloride sulfate type waters. Water from the two developed basins had higher median pH (7.1) compared with that of the other basins (5.6-6.3).</p><p>Winslow Crossing’s development had only a slight effect on the quality of water in Great Egg Harbor River. The river receives point and non-point discharges upstream from Winslow Crossing, and the quality of the water generally improves as the river flows downstream.</p><p>Streamflow and rainfall were slightly above normal. Unit hydrograph analysis of one basin showed an 80&nbsp;percent increase in the peak discharge of a 60-minute unit hydrograph (from approximately 150 to 270&nbsp;cubic feet per second) after the development of 14&nbsp;percent of the basin. Installation of a stormwater detention basin reduced the peak discharge to 220&nbsp;ft<sup>3</sup>/s.
