Vulnerability of the fry, measured as the ratio of escapes to predator attacks, was not significantly increased by either 90 or 165 days of exposure to the contaminants at any of the concentrations tested, and no behavioral differences were observed between control and exposed fry in their reaction to predators. Exposure to PCB's and DDE at environmental and higher concentrations thus did not affect the vulnerability of lake trout fry to predation. This observation suggests that the failure of lake trout reproduction in Lake Michigan was not caused by contaminant-induced reductions in the ability of the fry to escape predators.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Chlorinated hydrocarbons as a factor in the reproduction and survival of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Lake Michigan","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Mac, M.J., 1981, Vulnerability of young lake trout to predation after chronic exposure to PCB's and DDE, chap. of Chlorinated hydrocarbons as a factor in the reproduction and survival of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Lake Michigan, p. 29-32.","productDescription":"p. 29-32","startPage":"29","endPage":"32","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197791,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd596","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mac, Michael J.","contributorId":16772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mac","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326456,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Sera of 162 donkeys from five localities in the Panamint Mountains were examined by starch-gel electrophoresis to assess polymorphic variation in transferrins. Four homozygous and six heterozygous transferrin phenotypes controlled by four codominant, autosomal alleles were identified with Fe59 autoradiography. Significant interlocality heterogeneity in genotype distribution and allele frequency distribution among herds was demonstrated. The maximum distance between adjacent herds was 52 km and the minimum distance was 14 km. There are no major physical barriers to movements between herds; furthermore, donkeys are highly mobile animals capable of extensive travel. Behavioral isolation of adjacent herds occurs from May through July, during the peak of reproduction. This isolation is reinforced by fidelity of individuals to their respective home ranges, and to physiological dependence on permanent sources of water. Adjacent herds may overlap during winter when breeding and dependence on water sources are reduced.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1380477","usgsCitation":"Blake, J., Douglas, C.L., and Thompson, L., 1981, Spatial variation in transferrin allele frequencies among herds of feral donkeys in Death Valley National Monument, California: Journal of Mammalogy, v. 62, p. 58-63, https://doi.org/10.2307/1380477.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"58","endPage":"63","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130233,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"62","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db635456","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blake, J.G.","contributorId":108048,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blake","given":"J.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315523,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Douglas, C. D'ITRI et al. (1971) reported higher levels of mercury in trout from oligotrophic waters than in trout from eutrophic waters in unpolluted areas. They attributed part of the difference to differences in the food of the fish in the two types of waters. Position on the trophic scale is an important factor determining the degree of bioaccumulation of mercury by aquatic organisms, especially fish.

Elevated mercury levels have been reported in fish from three wilderness lakes in northern Maine (NORMANDEAU ASSOCIATES 1978). Concentrations exceeding 0.50 ~g/g were detected in the muscle tissue of many of the fish.

We report the levels of mercury in the muscle tissue of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and lake trout (S. namaycush) from three northern Maine lakes. Mercury levels in fish from two wilderness lakes in the same drainage basin were compared with each other, and in turn with those in fish from a lake in a separate drainage basin. The fish species composition in one of the wilderness lakes, Cliff Lake, is different from that in the other two lakes, enabling us to analyze the effects of trophic structure on mercury concentration in top carnivores. It is unlikely that mercury from agricultural, geological, or local industrial sources occurs in these lakes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF01611008","usgsCitation":"Akielaszek, J., and Haines, T., 1981, Mercury in the muscle tissue of fish from three northern Maine lakes: Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, v. 27, no. 1, p. 201-208, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01611008.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"201","endPage":"208","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131364,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"27","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db624d39","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Akielaszek, J.J.","contributorId":24731,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Akielaszek","given":"J.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315258,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Haines, T.A.","contributorId":83062,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haines","given":"T.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315259,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Prelight focusing for a distance of 30.5 metres and setting of shutter speed at 1/2000 of a second eliminated focusing and reduced image motion problems and resulted in high-resolution, large-scale aerial photography of small targets. Fry were tested after about 50, 110, and 165 days of exposure. We measured swimming performance by forcing the fry to swim through a continuous series of incrementally increased velocities until the fish were exhausted. Although we observed significant differences in swimming performance between a few test groups, we detected no relation between swimming performance of the fry and exposure to PCB's or DDE, or both, at the concentrations tested. Inasmuch as swimming performance apparently was not affected by the levels of contamination by PCB's and DDE in Lake Michigan, impairment of swimming by these contaminants cannot account for the failure of lake trout reproduction in Lake Michigan.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Chlorinated hydrocarbons as a factor in the reproduction and survival of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Lake Michigan","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":1,"text":"Federal Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Rottiers, D.V., and Bergstedt, R.A., 1981, Swimming performance of young lake trout after chronic exposure to PCBs and DDE: Technical Paper 105, p. 23-28.","productDescription":"p. 23-28","startPage":"23","endPage":"28","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":94538,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/2027/uc1.31822009785353?urlappend=%3Bseq=55"},{"id":197961,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db687ea5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rottiers, Donald V.","contributorId":10754,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rottiers","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326464,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bergstedt, Roger A. rbergstedt@usgs.gov","contributorId":4174,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bergstedt","given":"Roger","email":"rbergstedt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":326463,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The observed effect of the contaminants was a lowering of the preferred temperature. After 98 days of exposure, mean preferred temperatures were 10.3A?C for fry exposed to PCB's, 9.8A?C for those exposed to DDE, and 8.7A?C for those exposed to PCB's + DDE, as compared with 11.2A?C for control fry. Frequency distributions of residence temperatures were significantly (P < 0.01) different among all treatments. Body concentrations of contaminants in fry (I?g/g) decreased at 1X levels of PCB's and at 1X and 5X levels of DDE, but generally increased at all other contaminant exposure levels. Uptake of PCB's and DDE was evident from increases in body burden (I?g/fish) of the contaminants at all exposure levels and the controls. Growth was not significantly affected by any of the contaminant exposures. Mortalities of fry exposed to the lower concentrations (1X and 5X) were significantly less than those of control fry before day 56; however, between days 57 and 136, mortality rates increased dramatically and were significantly higher in all nine exposed groups than in the control group. For the last 40-day period (days 137-176), mortality was low and leveled off, but continued to be significantly higher in all exposed fry (except those in 1X and 5X PCB's) than in control fry. Each plot was visited once and 8 sets of aerial photographs were obtained in 3 years. Density of wetland basins was 11.00 ha/km2, and area averaged 9.7 ha/km2. Seasonal and temporary wetlands were most abundant; semipermanent wetlands occupied the greatest area. Basin size was positively correlated with water permanence. Discriminant function analysis based on size and an index to wetness derived from photographs misclassified 33% of the wetland basins. Forty percent of the wetlands were tilled. Photography of sample plots is potentially useful for determining number of basins and wetland area, but precise classification of plant communities in this region would require ground study.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wildlife Society Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Cowardin, L., Gilmer, D., and Mechlin, L., 1981, Characteristics of central North Dakota wetlands determined from sample aerial photographs and ground study: Wildlife Society Bulletin, v. 9, no. 4, p. 280-288.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"280","endPage":"288","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133812,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -101.656494140625,\n              46.32417161725691\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.06372070312499,\n              46.32417161725691\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.06372070312499,\n              47.37603463349758\n            ],\n            [\n              -101.656494140625,\n              47.37603463349758\n            ],\n            [\n              -101.656494140625,\n              46.32417161725691\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4f00","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cowardin, L.M.","contributorId":106435,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cowardin","given":"L.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310999,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gilmer, D.S.","contributorId":22270,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gilmer","given":"D.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310997,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mechlin, L.M.","contributorId":88299,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mechlin","given":"L.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310998,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Half the municipal population anc nearly all the rural population depend on water from these aquifers. Buried and surficial sand and gravel aquifers of Quaternary age occur in nearly all areas of the State and are composed of outwash, beach-ridge, valley-train, and ice-contact deposits. Cretaceous aquifers, absent in the northeast, are nearly continuous in the western half, and are thin or discontinuous in the central and southeast areas. Sandstone and carbonate rocks of Paleozoic and late Precambrian age in southeastern and northwestern Minnesota comprise the Cedar Valley-Maquoketa-Dubuque-Galena, Red River-Winnipeg, St. Peter, Prairie du Chien-Jordan, Franconia-Ironton-Galesville, and Mount Simon-Hinckley-Fond du Lac aquifers. Aquifers of early Precambrian age occur in all but southeastern Minnesota and include the North Shore Volcanic Group, Sioux Quartzite, Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks, Biwabik Iron-formatIon, and undifferentiated Precambrian rocks.
\n
The State's ground water generally contains less than 1,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, except in the extreme southwest, northeast, and western areas. Mineralized water is present at depth throughout the State. Freshwater extends to depths of about 1,000 feet in the center of the Hollandale embayment and in the Twin Cities basin. Six principal water-quality types are present in the .aquifers. Calcium magnesium bicarbonate type water, the most common, is generally present throughout the upper part of the ground-water system.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The study is one of a series that describes the geohydrology of the recreation area and that indentifies areas where water supplies can be developed. Precipitation in this arid area is about 5 inches per year. Streamflow is seasonal and extremely variable except for that in the Colorado River, which adjoins the area. Pan evaporation is more than 20 times greater than precipitation; therefore, regional ground-water supplies are meager except near the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and Lake Mohave. Large ground-water supplies can be developed near the river and lakes, and much smaller supplies may be obtained in a few favorable locations farther from the river and lakes. Ground water in most of the areas probably contains more than 1,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, but water that contains less than 1,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids can be obtained within about 1 mile of the lakes. Crystalline rocks of metamorphic, intrusive and volcanic origin crop out in the area. These rocks are overlain by conglomerate and mudstone of the Muddy Creek Formation, gravel and conglomerate of the older alluvium, and sand and gravel of the Chemehuevi Formation and younger alluvium. The crystalline rocks, where sufficiently fractured, yield water to springs and would yield small amounts of water to favorably located wells. The poorly cemented and more permeable beds of the older alluvium, Chemehuevi Formation, and younger alluvium are the better potential aquifers, particularly along the Colorado River and Lakes Mead and Mohave. Thermal springs in the gorge of the Colorado River south of Hoover Dam discharge at least 2,580 acre-feet per year of water from the volcanic rocks and metamorphic and plutonic rocks. The discharge is much greater than could be infiltrated in the drainage basin above the springs. Transbasin movement of ground water probably occurs , and perhaps the larger part of the spring discharge is underflow from Eldorado Valley. The more favorable sites for ground-water development are along the shores of Lakes Mead and Mohave and are the Fire Mountain, Opal Mountain to Aztec Wash, and Hemenway Wash sites. Wells yielding several hundred gallons per minute of water of acceptable chemical quality can be developed at these sites.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82115","usgsCitation":"Laney, R., 1981, Geohydrologic reconnaissance of Lake Mead National Recreation Area: Las Vegas Wash to Opal Mountain, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-115, Report: v, 23 p.; 1 Plate: 32.40 x 57.51 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82115.","productDescription":"Report: v, 23 p.; 1 Plate: 32.40 x 57.51 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":420380,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13659.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":37723,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0115/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37722,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0115/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142377,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0115/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Lake Mead National Recreation Area","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114.6330,\n 36.167\n ],\n [\n -114.9167,\n 36.167\n ],\n [\n -114.9167,\n 35.55\n ],\n [\n -114.6330,\n 35.55\n ],\n [\n -114.6330,\n 36.167\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c752","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Laney, R. Three to seven sets of seepage measurements made during 1980 were used in the analysis. Adjustments for fluctuations in flow were made from information obtained from water-stage recorders operated at selected locations during the time of each seepage run. The study showed an overall net gain of about 9 cubic feet per second\n(0.25 cubic meter per second) in the Sevier River and about 1.3 cubic feet per second (0.04 cubic meter per second) in the Leamington Canal. It also showed a net loss of about 7 cubic feet per second (0.20 cubic meter per second) in the Central Utah Canal and about 0.8 cubic foot per second (0.02 cubic meter per second) in the McIntyre Canal. The gains in the Sevier River and Leamington Canal probably come chiefly as return seepage of water lost from the Central Utah and McIntyre Canals.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr81820","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources and Energy, Division of Water Rights","usgsCitation":"Herbert, L.R., Cruff, R., and Holmes, W.F., 1981, Seepage study of the Sevier River and the Central Utah, McIntyre, and Leamington Canals, Juab and Millard Counties, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-820, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81820.","productDescription":"14 p.","numberOfPages":"50","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":406316,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0820/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405721,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75544.htm"},{"id":142204,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0820/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Juab County, Millard County","otherGeospatial":"Central Utah Canal, Leamington Canal, McIntyre Canal, Sevier River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -112.50102996826172,\n 39.445738080447484\n ],\n [\n -112.50102996826172,\n 39.63345647307571\n ],\n [\n -112.22911834716797,\n 39.63345647307571\n ],\n [\n -112.22911834716797,\n 39.445738080447484\n ],\n [\n -112.50102996826172,\n 39.445738080447484\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb993","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Herbert, L. The hydraulic properties of the basin-fill deposits used in the models were estimated primarily from aquifer tests made by the U.S. Geological Survey. Annual recharge to Vekol Valley and the Waterman Wash area is negligible in comparison to the quantity of water in storage and the quantity proposed to be pumped. The models are based on a three-dimensional, block-centered, finite-difference scheme. The Vekol Valley model was calibrated for steady-state onditions, and the Waterman Wash area model was calibrated for steady-state and transient conditions. The sensitivity of calibrated heads to changes in transmissivity was also investigated. An uncalibrated storage-depletion model was developed for the Bosque area. Simulated water levels for steady-state conditions average within 5 feet of measured values for Vekoi Valley and within 6 feet for the Waterman Wash area. Simulated water levels for transient conditions in the Waterman Wash area average within 8 feet of measured values for 15 years of analysis and within 15 feet for 24 years. Water-level declines simulated by the Waterman Wash area model average within 17 feet of those measured during the 24-year period, 1951-75.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8277","usgsCitation":"Matlock, D.T., 1981, Simulative models for the analysis of ground-water flow in Vekol Valley, the Waterman Wash area, and the Bosque area, Maricopa and Pina Counties, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-77, Report: vi, 77 p.; 14 Plates: 9.997 x 17.03 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8277.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 77 p.; 14 Plates: 9.997 x 17.03 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":420140,"rank":17,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13824.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38076,"rank":13,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38072,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38070,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38079,"rank":16,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38078,"rank":15,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38077,"rank":14,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38075,"rank":12,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38071,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38069,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38068,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38067,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38066,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142510,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38080,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38074,"rank":11,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38073,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0077/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Maricopa County, Pinal County","otherGeospatial":"Bosque area, Vekol Valley, Waterman Wash","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -112,\n 33.467\n ],\n [\n -113,\n 33.467\n ],\n [\n -113,\n 32.5\n ],\n [\n -112,\n 32.5\n ],\n [\n -112,\n 33.467\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48d9e4b07f02db5496a7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Matlock, D. But following the ban on DDT in 1970, residues of total DDT in Lake Michigan lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) declined rapidly from 10.5µg/g in 1970 to 5.7 µg/g in 1976. During this period, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were being detected in lake trout tissues at about 20 µg/g. It was hypothesized that the high level of PCBs being accumulated by fish may have influenced uptake and elimination of DDT and DDE (1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis [p-chlorophenyl] ethylene) by fish. To test this hyphophesis, fingeriing lake trout were exposed to various combinations of DDT, DDE (100 ng/liter), and PCBs (100 and 500 ng/liter) in water for 12 weeks. After DDT and DDe exposures were completed, exposure to PCBs was continued for an additional 16 weeks to measure any effect PCBs may have on the elimination of DDT and DDE by fish. Accumulation and elimination rates of DDT and DDE were compared. It was found that PCBs did not influence the accumulation or elimination rates of DDT or DDE in lake trout and therefore should not have had a major influence on the decline of DDT in lake trout.
","language":"English","publisher":"Alliance of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Societies","doi":"10.2134/jeq1981.00472425001000030013x","usgsCitation":"Hesselberg, R.J., and Nicholson, L.W., 1981, Influence of PCBs in water on uptake and elimination of DDT and DDE by lake trout: Journal of Environmental Quality, v. 10, no. 3, p. 315-318, https://doi.org/10.2134/jeq1981.00472425001000030013x.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"315","endPage":"318","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131785,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7745","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hesselberg, Robert J.","contributorId":36074,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hesselberg","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308218,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nicholson, Lawrence W.","contributorId":79066,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nicholson","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308219,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Since then year class strengths have varied considerably; four have been outstanding- those of 1959, 1962, 1964, and 1971. A rapid rate of rise in water temperature during spawning and incubation was positively correlated with the strength of these year classes. Each time a strong year class appeared, small-mesh gill-net effort was markedly increased, and an average of 46% of the fish of each year class was harvested at age I before they were sexually mature. If the smallmesh gill-net fishery had not been operating, the total annual production by the largemesh gill-net fishery could have been increased by an average of 35%.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1981)1<112:TCFFWI>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Wolfert, D., 1981, The commercial fishery for walleyes in New York waters of Lake Erie, 1959-1978: North American Journal of Fisheries Management, v. 1, no. 2, p. 112-126, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1981)1<112:TCFFWI>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"112","endPage":"126","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130392,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a2cd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolfert, D.R.","contributorId":25103,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolfert","given":"D.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308577,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
