Ground-water withdrawals have resulted in water-level declines in most of the area. Information shown on the maps includes change in water level (1966-78) and irrigated area; depth to water and altitude of the water level; and chemical quality of the water and well depth. Hydrographs of the water level in selected wells and a table of historical pumpage also are included. As part of this National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program, the U.S. Geological Survey is conducting a regional study of the geohydrology of the northern Louisiana salt-dome basin. Field studies involving the collection of data began in 1977. Data-collection networks were established for both ground- and surface-water sources in the vicinity of two salt domes, Rayburns and Vacherie.</p><p>Ground-water data collection involved measuring water levels and sampling existing production wells and test wells drilled by the Louisiana State University Institute for Environmental Studies. Samples were analyzed for one or more of the following categories of chemical constituents: inorganic, trace metal, and radiochemical.</p><p>A network of surface-water stations was set up for measuring discharge and collecting periodic samples. Initial sampling was for analysis for inorganic chemical constituents and radioactive elements. Samples were collected over the period March-November 1977 at approximately monthly intervals at 36 stations. The stations were located along the axis of the Bay from Calaveras Point in South San Francisco Bay to the town of Rio Vista on the Sacramento River. The samples were analyzed for the following core parameters: salinity, temperature, light transmission, chlorophyll a fluorescence, light extinction, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, pCO<sub>2</sub>, orthophosphate, nitrate+nitrite, nitrite, ammonia, and silicate. Additional analyses were performed on selected discrete samples collected for particulate organic carbon, chlorophyll a, alkalinity, total CO<sub>2</sub> and suspended particulate matter. The results of these analyses and the analytical methods used are documented in this report.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Regional analyses indicate that harmonic-mean temperature is negatively correlated with altitude. No change in specific conductance since 1951 was noted for the Little Snake River; however, specific conductance in the Yampa River has increaed 14 % since that time and is attributed to increased agricultural and municipal use of water. Site-specific relationships between major inorganic constituents and specific conductance for the Little Snake and Yampa Rivers were similar to regional relationships developed from both historic and recent (1975) data. These relationships provide a means for estimating concentrations of major inorganic constituents from specific conductance, which is easily measured. Trace-element and nutrient data collected from August 1975 through September 1976 at 92 sites in the Yampa River basin indicate that water-quality degradation occurred upstream from 3 sites. The degradation resulted from underground drainage from pyritic materials that probably are associated with coal at one site, discharge from powerplant cooling-tower blowdown water at a second site, and runoff from a small watershed containing a gas field at the third site. Ambient concentrations of dissolved and total iron and manganese frequently exceeded proposed Colorado water-quality standards. The concentrations of many dissolved and total trace elements and nutrients were greatest during March 1976. These were associated with larger suspended-sediment concentrations and smaller pH values than at other times of the year. A 1-year study tested the network operation and determined that analysis of the data could demonstrate the major changes in salinity, temperature, and light-attenuation distributions known to occur, based on earlier research, in response to variations of delta inflow and to other physical processes. Observations of eddies at two stations, of the influence of water from a river flooding in the extreme south bay, and of difference in salinity and temperature laterally across the entrance to the south bay are all new but are consistent with existing models. The pH, dissolved oxygen, and light-attenuation measurements, while adequate to observe small-scale vertical variations, are not sufficiently sensitive to detect the effects of phytoplankton blooms. The High Plains aquifer consists of one or more hydraulically connected geologic units of late Tertiary or Quaternary age. The late Tertiary rocks consist of the Brule Formation, Arikaree Group, and Ogallala Formation. The Quaternary rocks consist of alluvial, dune-sand, and valley-fill deposits. The configuration of the water table indicates that the High Plains aquifer is continuous throughout its extent, ground water generally flows west to east, and areas overlain by dune sand are recharge areas. Discharge from the aquifer is primarily to wells and streams. In the Pacific, State jurisdiction extends for 3 geographical (nautical) miles (5.56 km) from the coastline. The OCS, which comprises the submerged lands of the Continental Shelf seaward of the California, Oregon, and Washington State boundaries, is under Federal jurisdiction. Activities occurring offshore must be supplied and supported from land, and the onshore activities required may have significant effects on the communities in which they occur. For example, oil and gas production might involve the expansion of existing transportation and processing facilities and the construction of new ones, and it might trigger an influx of workers and change employment patterns. These deposits were divided into three units on the basis of their lithology and hydraulic properties. Two of the three units are composed of layers of sand and gravel alternating with layers of silt and clay. The third unit consists of silt and clay and in most places separates the other two units. The thickness of the upper unit ranges from 200 to 600 feet and the middle unit from 10 to 260 feet. The thickness of the lower unit is believed to range from 2,000 to 3,000 feet.</p><p>The water-bearing strata in the upper unit are fairly continuous and average 15 feet in thickness. The lower water-bearing strata probably are not as continuous as those in the upper unit, but they yield larger quantities of water to wells. The silt-and-clay unit averages 70 feet in thickness, occurs generally near sea level, and is not known to contain any major water-bearing deposits.</p><p>The average annual ground-water recharge to streams on the Kitsap peninsula was estimated to be 17 times the 1975 annual ground-water pumpage for the peninsula. Some, hut an unknown amount, of this water is available for increased withdrawal by wells. Increased withdrawals cause decreased streamflow, declining water levels, and increased seawater contamination.</p><p>There appears to be no widespread seawater contamination of wells in the study area. Samples of water and bed material were collected at six sites during March 1976 to April 1978 to determine selected physical, chemical, and biological characteristics before construction. Samples were collected at least twice during each season of the year. Data derived from these samples will provide baseline information to aid in assessing the impact of highway construction on the water quality of the lake. Rogers Lake is separated into an upper and lower lake by a culvert; both were eutrophic and dominated by blue-green algae year around.</p>\n<p>Analyses of water from Rogers Lake suggest that sodium and chloride concentrations were higher than in ground water or in water in some surrounding lakes . Sodium ranged from 7.2 to 55 milligrams per liter, and chloride ranged from 15 to 30 milligrams per liter. Concentrations were highest in March 1978, when most of the lake water was frozen. The attempt to improve the quality of river water with this experiment was not successful because brine leakage from Anderson Lake to the nearby Pecos River through permeable subsurface rocks was greater than the previous natural spring inflow. Brine leakage from Anderson Lake from July 22, 1963, through September 30, 1968, was estimated by evaporation-pan, salt accumulation, and dissolved-constituent methods. The leakage values given by these three methods are in good agreement with each other and indicate that between the dates given, leakage from the lake was about 2 ,300 acre-feet, compared with a brine inflow to the lake of about 3,690 acre-feet. Other data indicate that pumping from the brine aquifer greatly reduced the natural inflow from brine springs to the Malaga Bend reach. The rate of brine leakage from Anderson Lake is probably greater than might be expected from other brine lakes in the area because the cavities in the bottom of the lake apparently are in hydrologic connection with the Pecos River. This connection is shown by a relation between the salinity of the Pecos River and the reservoir stage of Anderson Lake.
