The effect of storm runoff on the quality of water in the the Mill Creek drainage basin in west-central New Jersey is described in this report. The study area (23.7 square kilometers) consists of agricultural and undeveloped land and the residential community of Willingboro. From October 1975 to September 1976, stream discharge and 86 water-quality constituents were measured during five base flows and five storms at nine sites within the basin. Only 38 of the measured consitituents were detected in significant amounts.
Insignificant amounts of pesticides, except 2,4-D and silvex, and the metals cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, mercury, selenium, and carbonate were measured even during heavy runoff. All other constituents showed an increase in concentration with increasing streamflow and the corresponding loads usually correlated with streamflow.
Runoff from the nonresidential part of the study area in the upstream part of the drainage basin had a more significant impact on the stream quality than did the runoff from the residential area. The nonresidential area contributed more nutrients, common inorganics, sediment, and organic carbon than the residential area. The residential area contributed more calcium, nitrite, lead, iron, BOD, 2,4-D, and silvex.
With the exception of suspended iron, fecal coliform bacteria, suspended lead, and suspended phosphorus, all recorded concentrations under all streamflow conditions met the recommended limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for domestic water supplies or streams not discharging directly into a lake or reservoir. Very short-term exceptions were recorded during peak storm runoff.
Iron concentrations exceeded recommended limits of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Occasional releases of suspended iron from the water-treatment plant in the lower part of the drainage basin contributed to this high concentration. However, Mill Creek and its tributaries will still have naturally occurring high suspended iron concentrations even after the water-treatment plant eliminates its sludge-holding pond.
Fecal coliform bacteria affected the quality of water in the Mill Creek basin more than any other constituent measured. It exceeded recommended limits by as much as two orders of magnitude and was found in equal amounts throughout the streams in the basin. The source of the bacteria could not be identified.
Runoff from the Willingboro residential area produced mean suspended lead concentrations up to three times greater than the 50 micrograms per liter criteria set for domestic water supplies. Mean concentrations of suspended phosphorus throughout the basin were 2.5 times greater than the recommended limit of 0.1 milligrams per liter. Sediment concentrations and loads increased with increasing streamflow. However, the amounts are not considered unusual for a developed area. The only sediment deposition occurred at the downstream end of the study area, which is slightly affected by tide. A significant part of the deposited material was composed of sludge material from the water-treatment plant in the lower end of the study area.

The shallow flow systems are the source of base flow to all streams on the island. The ground-water-contributing areas of southwest Suffolk County 's 21 streams are delineated on a map. The drainage-divide locations were derived from a 1975 water-table map on the assumption that flow in the shallow flow systems is two dimensional (horizontal). This assumption is valid for the southern part of the area (adjacent to flowing streams), but, because the direction of flow in the northern part, near the regional ground-water divide, is mainly downward, the delineations for the northern part are only inferred. The total estimated water use in the State in 1980 from groundwater and surface water was 3532 million gallons/day (mgd), including 662 mgd of saline water. Freshwater used from all sources in Mississippi during the period 1975 through 1980 increased from 2510 mgd to > 2870 mgd, a 14% increase. Although modest increases of freshwater use may be expected in public, self-supplied industrial, and thermoelectric supplies, large future increases in the use of freshwater may be expected primarily as a result of growth in irrigation and aquaculture. Management and protection of the quantity and quality of the available freshwater supply are often problems associated with increased use. Water use data, both temporal and spatial, are needed by the State of Mississippi to provide for intelligent, long-term management of the resources; one table gives data on the principal categories of water use, sources, and use by county. These deposits were divided into three units on the basis of their lithology and hydraulic properties. Two of the three units are composed of layers of sand and gravel alternating with layers of silt and clay. The third unit consists of silt and clay and in most places separates the other two units. The thickness of the upper unit ranges from 200 to 600 feet and the middle unit from 10 to 260 feet. The thickness of the lower unit is believed to range from 2,000 to 3,000 feet.
The water-bearing strata in the upper unit are fairly continuous and average 15 feet in thickness. The lower water-bearing strata probably are not as continuous as those in the upper unit, but they yield larger quantities of water to wells. The silt-and-clay unit averages 70 feet in thickness, occurs generally near sea level, and is not known to contain any major water-bearing deposits.
The average annual ground-water recharge to streams on the Kitsap peninsula was estimated to be 17 times the 1975 annual ground-water pumpage for the peninsula. Some, hut an unknown amount, of this water is available for increased withdrawal by wells. Increased withdrawals cause decreased streamflow, declining water levels, and increased seawater contamination.
There appears to be no widespread seawater contamination of wells in the study area. Local areas where chloride concentrations in well water exceed 25 milligrams per liter are the southern part of the Longbranch peninsula, Horsehead Bay, Point Evans, Sinclair Inlet, Eagle Harbor, Fletcher Bay, the north end of Bainbridge Island, and the north tip of the Kitsap peninsula.

Average annual sulfate loads in streams are 3,000 to 4,000 tons per square mile of mined land in the Big Muddy and Saline River basins in southern Illinois. Relative high concentrations of dissolved aluminum, arsenic, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc are commonly associated with concentrations of sulfate greater than about 2,000 milligrams per Predominant rock types in the basin include granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith and basalt flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group. Waters from thermal springs in the basin, temperatures of which range from 34 to 86 degrees Celsius, are sodium bicarbonate types and are slightly alkaline. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from 173 to 470 milligrams per liter. Reservoir temperatures determined from the sodium-potassium-calcium and silicic acid-corrected silica geothermometers range from 53 to 143 degrees Celsius. Tritium, present in concentrations between 0 and 2 tritium units, indicate sampled thermal waters are at least 100 years old and possibly more than 1,000 years old. Stable isotope data indicate it is unlikely any of the nonthermal waters sampled are representative of precipitation that recharges the thermal springs in the basin. Thermal springs discharged about 5,700 acre-feet of water in 1979. Associated convective heat flux is 1.1x10 to the 7th power calories per second.
