The potentiometric surface is shown by 5-foot contour intervals except in the Fernandina Beach area where 20-foot intervals are used to show a deep cone of depression. This is the fourth map of a series covering the entire St. Johns River Water Management District and vicinity. Two maps cover the low water-level period in May and two show the high-water period in September. The potentiometric surface ranged from 125 feet above the National Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD) in Polk County to 120 feet below NGVD in Nassau County. From its outcrop area the Eutaw-McShan aquifer dips about 30 feet per mile to the west and southwest. Thickness of the aquifer commonly is between 200 and 300 feet in most of the area, and commonly about one-half this thickness consists of sand. In the outcrop area the potentiometric surface is strongly affected by recharge from precipitation, topography, and drainage of the aquifer by streams. The potentiometric surface of the aquifer slopes generally to the west away from the area of outcrop and it is strongly affected by large ground-water withdrawals at or near Tupelo, Aberdeen, and West Point. Historically, water levels in or near the outcrop of the Eutaw-McShan aquifer have shown little or no long-term changes. Withdrawals of water by wells from the downdip area have caused long-term water-level declines of 1 to 2 feet per year in much of the confined part of the aquifer. Water-level declines during recent years in several observation wells in Lee County ranged from 2 to 9 feet per year. One hydrograph in Clay County that is near the center of the depression in the potentiometric surface at West Point shows about 5 feet per year of water-level decline since 1972. In the outcrop area of the Meridian-upper Wilcox aquifer the potentiometric surface is strongly affected by recharge from precipitation, by topography, and by drainage of the aquifer by streams. The potentiometric surface slopes downward generally to the west away from the area of outcrop and is strongly affected by large groundwater withdrawals in the Greenwood, Indianola, Marks, Grenada, and Memphis areas. Historically, water levels in or near the outcrop of the Meridian-upper Wilcox have shown little or no long-term changes, but during the past 20 years water levels have declined from 1 to 2 feet per year in much of the confined part of the aquifer. This valley was formerly filled by McCarty Glacier, which began a drastic retreat shortly after 1909; the glacier reached shallow water at the head of the fiord around 1960. The relative rate of retreat in deep water and on land is disclosed by the slower melting of stagnent ice left in a side valley. Soundings and profiles show the main channel to extend to a depth as great as 957 feet and to have the typical ' U ' shape of a glacier-eroded valley; since the glacier 's retreat, sediments have formed a nearly level deposit in the deepest part of the fiord. Old forest debris dated by carbon-14 indicates that a neoglacial advance of the glacier began before 3,395 years B.P. (before present); by 1,500 B.P. the glacier filled most of the fiord, and before the glacier culminated its advance around 1860 , two glacier-dammed lakes were formed in side valleys. Preneoglacial forest debris dated by carbon-14 indicates Northwestern Glacier to have advanced into the fiord prior to 1,385 years before present (B.P.); a branch glacier evidently advanced into forest 1,635 years B.P. Seasonal variations of the potentiometric level in one well at Jacksonville was 4.2 feet during 1976. During the 18 year period from 1960 to 1977 the mean annual decline of potentiometric levels in the county was about 8 feet because of a large increase in withdrawals and to a lesser extent a decline in average annual rainfall in recharge areas. Maps of the potentiometric surface in 1960 and 1977 indicate that the greatest decline was more than 20 feet in the south-central part of the county. The decline was less than 5 feet in the western part of the county. Three portable flowmeters that might be suitable for obtaining fast and accurate discharge measure-ments on large irrigation systems were tested during 1979 under both laboratory and field conditions: propeller type gated-pipe meter, a Doppler meter, and a transient-time meter.</p><p>The gated-pipe meter was found to be difficult to use and sensitive to particulate matter in the fluid. The Doppler meter, while easy to use, would not function suitably on steel pipe 6 inches or larger in diameter, or on aluminum pipe larger than 8 inches in diameter. The transient-time meter was more difficult to use than the other two meters; however, this instrument provided a high degree of accuracy and reliability under a variety of conditions. To compensate for this loss, water-quality and streamflow data were statistically analyzed and solute loads were simulated using computer techniques.</p><p>Functional relationships existing between specific conductance and solute concentration for monthly samples were used to develop linear regression models. The models were then used to simulate daily solute concentrations using daily specific conductance as the independent variable. Once simulated, the solute concentrations, in milligrams per liter, were transformed into daily solute loads, in tons, using mean daily streamflow records.</p><p>Computer output was formatted into tables listing simulated mean monthly solute concentrations, in milligrams per liter, and the monthly and annual solute loads, in tons, for water years The methodology used by the U.S. Geological Survey in studying the effects of the navigation pools on the ground-water-flow regime involved digital modeling of steady- and nonsteady-state conditions. The steady-state model, GWFLOW, computes the head response in an aquifer due to various boundary conditions. The nonsteady-state model, SUPERMOCK, was designed to simulate transient stress and response in an alluvial-flow system. In addition to the simulation models several computer programs were developed during the study to aid in the preparation of field data for input to the models and in the calibration of the models. Calibration techniques unique to each of the models were developed for the investigation. The 1977 daily use was 14,812 million gallons of saline water and 6,654 million gallons of freshwater. Most of the saline water, largely surface water, was pumped from tidal estuaries. Only 107.6 million gallons per day of saline water--less than 1 percent--was obtained from wells. Thermoelectric power generation used virtually all the saline water, 14,738 million gallons per day, whereas all other industrial uses were only 73 million gallons of saline water per day. The freshwater supply was almost equally divided between ground water (53 percent) and surface water (47 percent). Of the total freshwater used, 43 percent was for irrigation--an average of 2,873 million gallons of freshwater daily on the average. The remaining daily use of freshwater was 21 percent for thermoelectric power generation, 19 percent for public supply; 14 percent for industrial use other than thermoelectric power generation; and 3 percent for domestic and rural use. Irrigation was also responsible for the greatest consumption during 1977, with 1,255 million gallons consumed daily which also includes 192 million gallons per day conveyance loss. An investigation was conducted to determine the technical feasibility of artificially recharging aquifers through wells and through surface spreading by means of impoundments, pits, and canals. Information gained from a literature search and from preliminary tests was used to design several artificial-recharge experiments. The experiments showed that large quantities of water can be recharged through wells and by surface spreading if conditions are favorable.</p><p>In the well experiments, about 0.5 billion gallons of water from an aquifer recharged by the Platte River was transported 3 miles by pipeline and recharged through a well into a Pleistocene sand and gravel aquifer near Aurora where ground-water levels are declining. The recharge rate was about 730 gallons per minute during two tests of 6 and 8 months duration. The rise in ground-water levels due to recharge extended more than a mile from the recharge well in both tests.</p><p>The pattern of ground-water-level buildup during the 8-month test was similar to that during the 6-month test. Two-thirds of the way through the test the rate of water-level buildup in the recharge well increased greatly because casing failure allowed a large amount of sediment to enter the well.</p><p>Although the chemical quality of the recharge water was markedly different from that of the native aquifer water, no evidence of clogging due to chemical reaction was detected; also, there was no evidence of clogging due to air entrainment or bacterial growth. Evaluation of water-level changes in the recharge well and in observation wells during the 6-month test indicated some clogging of the aquifer in the immediate vicinity of the recharge well due to a small amount (0.04 milligram per liter) of fine sediment in the recharge water. Analysis of water-level buildup in the recharge well during the 6-month test indicated that recharge could have continued at a rate of about 700 gallons per minute for several years before rehabilitation of the recharge well would have been necessary.</p><p>In surface-spreading experiments, the maximum sustained infiltration rates from a 24-foot-diameter ring infiltrometer set in loess at the well-recharge site near Aurora were about 0.5 foot per day during a 140day test. The recharge water caused water levels in a perched zone of saturation at depths between 36 and 38 feet to rise 15 feet, to within 21 feet of the surface, indicating that if the test had continued or if the impoundment area had been larger, the water level in the perched zone of saturation might have risen to the surface thereby reducing the infiltration rate.</p><p>The maximum sustained infiltration rate from a similar experiment in the Sand Hills near Tryon was 11 feet per day. Perching layers also retarded downward infiltration and caused lateral movement of water in the subsurface at this site.</p><p>Infiltration rates from re-use pits near the Aurora site ranged from 0.01 to 1.60 feet per day, indicating that the permeability of the subsurface material is extremely variable and that perching layers probably are absent in some areas.</p><p>Flow measurements in an irrigation canal excavated in loess near Farwell indicate an infiltration rate of 0.36 foot per day from a 2.7mile reach.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
