The Bureau of Land Management requested on May 3, 1979 that the U.S. Geological Survey determine the base (100-year) flood-plain limits at three sites (fig. 1) along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System Highway (Haul Road) between the Yukon River and Prudhoe Bay in order to issue land-use permits. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT) has constructed maintenance camps at Coldfoot and adjacent to the Jim River near Pump Station 5. The site along the Sagavanirktok River near Pump Station 3 is under consideration as a site for potential development.

An analysis of the flood data available at nearby gaging stations, at prior flood-survey sites, and from regional flood analyses was made. The discharge of the 100-year flood was calculated for the three sites using methods described by U.S. Water Resources Council (WRC, 1977) and given in Lamke (1979). Next field examination was made of the sites. Flood-deposited debris upon the overbank flood-ways was used to determine elevations of the maximum evident flood at the three flood-prone sites mapped. The maximum evident floodmarks for these floods were at elevations and locations which indicated that they were independent of ice scars. Ice scars higher than the highest flood debris were found at the Jim River site. Flood evidence of recent peaks was also used as an aid in determining the base flood boundaries. These limits have been delineated on aerial photographs of the sites. Surveying was limited to that necessary to adequately define the base flood boundaries; step-backwater computations were not made. Although some additional pertinent information is shown on the photographs, no attempt was made to delineate areas of inadequate local drainage or seasonal problems of high ground-water tables.

Ground water in southeastern Montana was investigated to determine if sulfide production was bacterially mediated. Sulfate—reducing bacteria were detected in 25 of 26 ground—water samples in numbers ranging from 2.0 x 101 to greater than 2.4 x 104 bacteria per 100 milliliters. Stable sulfur isotope fractionation studies indicate a biological role in sulfate reduction. However, sulfate—reducing activity as determined by use of a radioactive sulfur isotope was observed in only 1 of 16 samples. Bacterial dissimilatory sulfate reduction is postulated to be responsible for a major part of the sulfide produced in these ground waters. These bacteria are most likely active in the adsorbed state, possibly in subsurface microzones where environmental conditions are conducive to sulfate reduction.

Federal and State legislation require the trophic classification of lakes and ponds in the State of Maine as part of a lake management program. In 1974, the State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) adopted a preliminary set of procedures for establishing an index of lake trophic status. Also in 1974, this three-year study of selected Maine lakes was initiated to evaluate and improve this trophic classification system.

Analyses of project results led to the following rec-commendations for modifications in Maine's lake-management program. Lake trophic state should be established using a mean annual value of twice monthly observations of chlorophyll a in epilimnetic waters during the open-water season. Actual Trophic State Index (TSI) values for lakes are calculated using the formula: TSI = 77.7 - 27.3 (log annual mean chlorophyll a, in mg/L). In lakes with colors less than or equal to TO platinum-cobalt units, mean annual Secchi disk transparencies may be used for calculation of lake TSI using the formula: TSI = 40.0 + 33.0 (log annual10mean Secchi disk, in meters).

Supplemental information recommended for inclusion in the lake management program should include: morphological, hydrologic, and geologic data; baseline profile water-quality surveys; and benthic invertebrate, vegetation, and cultural surveys. Another recommendation is to change DEP's method of calculating the mean annual runoff for a lake drainage basin to an empirical formula based on drainage area characteristics. This resulted in more accurate estimations of mean annual hydraulic retention times for lakes. Many of these parameters recommended for inclusion in the lake management program will allow comparisons with future surveys to determine the impacts of cultural development on Maine lakes.

The most productive aquifers in the Fishkill-Beacon area, Dutchess County, N.Y., are the sand and gravel beds in the northeast corner of the area and along the valleys of Fishkill and Clove Creeks. The average yield of these aquifers to wells is 190 gal/min (gallons per minute). The most productive bedrock aquifer is limestone, which yields an average of about 150 gal/min. Shale and granite each yield an average of less than 35 gal/min. About 4 billion gallons of available ground water is estimated to be in storage in the sand and gravel aquifers in the area. The area withdraws an average of 3.3 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) of water in June, July, and August and 2 Mgal/d during the remainder of the year.

Hydrologic investigations of urban drainage basins in Texas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1954. These studies are now in progress in Austin, Dallas, Dallas County, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.

The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing gaging-station network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. In September 1968, the program was further expanded to include the collection of water-quality data.

The operation and maintenance of stations 08178000, San Antonio River at San Antonio; 08178700, Salado Creek (upper station) at San Antonio; and 08178800, Salado Creek (lower station) at San Antonio are funded by the San Antonio River Authority in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey.

 The operation and maintenance and collection of water-quality data at station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio are funded by the Edwards Underground Water District in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey. These stations will provide hydrologic data on similar and adjacent drainage basins. One drainage basin is undergoing extensive urbanization while the other is undeveloped.

 The objective of the San Antonio urban-hydrology study are:

  1.  To provide data showing the effects of various stages of urbanization on flood discharge and runoff.
  2.  To provide water-quality data on surface-water runoff from floods of various magnitudes, during all seasons of the year from areas with different types of utilization.

Ground water was the major source of drinking water on Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1978. Withdrawals from over 100 municipal wells averaged 17.5 million gallons per day in 1978. Private wells on Cape Cod are estimated to number 15,000. Ground water occurs primarily under unconfined or water-table conditions. Artesian conditions exist where fine silt and clay beds have been deposited along Cape Cod's north shore from Bourne to Brewster, locally along the south shore, and in parts of Chatham and Orleans. Natural recharge to the aquifer is entirely from precipitation. Discharge is by pumping; evapotranspiration; direct evaporation from the water table; and seepage to rivers, marshes, and the ocean. Ground-water quality is generally suitable for domestic uses, although some public and private water wells have been contaminated. Contaminants can enter the ground water by infiltration from land surface, ponds, streams, and swamps. Infiltration from sewage lagoons, sand filter beds, septic tanks, cesspools, recharge pits, wells, or intrusion of saline water may also contaminate the aquifer. Alternative sources of drinking water, including desalination, transport from the mainland, and rainwater cisterns, are many times more expensive.

This report, which is one of a series of reports for Alaska, lists stations in Arctic Slope Alaska (fig. 1) at which streamflow and water-quality data have been collected by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Most of the data referred to in this report have been published in reports of the Geological Survey. Water-quality data which were not included in those reports have been placed in the Survey's national computer storage system and are available through data-retrieval programs. Some of the older streamflow data have not been entered into the computer system. Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper (WSP) 1372 contains a summary of previously published records of monthly and annual discharges through September 1945, as well as records of daily and monthly discharges for the water years 1946-50 which had not yet been published. Water-Supply Paper 1372 also contains records of other chemical quality of streams collected between September 1948 and September 1950 and also some earlier records for the Yukon River at Anvik.

The effects of channel improvements on this Coastal Pain basin 's hydrology will be determined from data collected prior to, during, and for several years following channel alternations. This report summarizes the findings of data collected prior to these improvements. During the 3-year study period, flow data collected from four stream gaging stations in the basin show that streams are dry approximately 10 percent of the time. Chemical analyses of water samples from the streams and from eight shallow groundwater observation wells indicate that water discharge from the surficial aquifer is the primary source of streamflow during rainless periods. Concentrations of Kjeldahl nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were often 5 to 10 times greater at Chicod Creek sites than those at nearby baseline sites. It is probable that runoff from farming and livestock operations contributes significantly to these elevated concentrations in Chicod Creek. The only pesticides detected in stream water were low levels of DDT and dieldrin, which occurred during storm runoff. A much wider range of pesticides, however, are found associated with streambed materials. During 1977 and 1978, water levels in the Floridan aquifer throughout most of north and central peninsular Florida rose 1 to 3 feet, based on water levels measured in 380 wells selected from a network of about 5,000 observation wells for which measurements are in the files of the U.S. Geological Survey. Hydrographs of 51 wells are presented which show long-term trends of ground-water levels in selected areas of Florida. In west-central Polk County, an area of notable pumping, levels in the Floridan and other aquifers rose in response to decreased pumping of ground water for industrial use. In north Florida, levels rose from 1 to about 4 feet in Suwannee and Hamilton Counties. In northwest Florida, levels in the sand-and-gravel aquifer rose from less than 1 foot to 5 feet. Most widespread declines in ground-water levels in northwest Florida occurred in the Tallahassee area where levels declined from 1 to nearly 5 feet.

Data were collected on the hydrology of the Copper-Nickel study region to identify the location and nature of groundwater resources, determine the flow characteristics and general quality of the major streams, and determine the potential effects of mining copper and nickel on the hydrologic stream. Groundwater generally occurs in local flow systems within surficial deposits and in fractures in the upper few hundred feet of bedrock. Yields commonly range from 1 to 5 gallons per minute from wells in surficial materials and bedrock, but can be as much as 1,000 gallons per minute from wells in the sand and gravel aquifer underlying the Embarrass River valley. Groundwater generally is calcium-magnesium bicarbonate types. Over a mineralized zone, groundwater has concentrations of copper and nickel greater than 5 micrograms per liter. The average annual runoff from streams in the study area is about 10 inches. About 60% of the annual runoff occurs during snowmelt in spring. Flood peaks are reduced in streams that have surface storage available in on-channel lakes and wetlands. Specific conductance in streams can exceed 250 micromhos per centimeter at 25 Celsius where mine dewatering supplements natural discharge. Estimated groundwater discharge to projected copper-nickel mines ranges from less than 25 to about 2,000 gallons per minute. The introduction of trace metals from future mining activities to the groundwater system can be reduced if tailings basins and stockpiles are located on material which has low permeability, such as till, peat, or bedrock. The flood profile, computed from high-water marks, was 25 feet above that for medium flow near the downstream end of the reach and decreased uniformly to 7 feet above medium flow at the upstream end. Overbank areas inundated averaged about a mile in width throughout the reach and caused damage to residential areas of the towns of Packwood and Randle. The peak discharge at the downstream end of the reach, was 89,300 cu ft/s and was the largest that occurred in a 30-year period of record. The peak discharge at the upstream end of the reach was 36,200 cu ft/s and was the second largest that occurred in a 49-year period of record; the largest peak discharge observed occurred on December 21, 1933, and was 36,600 cu ft/s. The recurrence interval for the December 2-3, 1977 flood, computed from a frequency analyses of recorded peak discharges, was greater than 100 years at the downstream end of the reach and about 45 years at the upstream end. The 100-year flood at the respective reach ends would have a peak discharge of about 82,500 cu ft/s and about 43,000 cu ft/s. This report, which is one of a series of reports for Alaska, lists stations in southwest Alaska (fig. 1) at which streamflow and water-quality data have been collected by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Most of the data referred to in this report have been published in reports of the Geological Survey. Water-quality data which were not included in those reports have been placed in the Survey's national computer storage system and are available through data-retrieval programs. Some of the older streamflow data have not been entered into the computer system. Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper (WSP) 1372 contains a summary of previously published records of monthly and annual discharges through September 1945, as well as records of daily and monthly discharges for the water years 1946-50 that had not yet been published. Water-Supply Paper 1372 also contains other stream chemical quality records collected between September 1948 and September 1950 and also some earlier records for the Yukon River at Anvik. Since 1950 data have been published in water-supply papers and a series of annual reports...

Data have been published in the annual series of reports, \"Water Resources Data for Alaska,\" since 1961 for streamflow records and 1964 for water-quality records.

This index lists: continuous-record streamgaging stations, crest-stage gage and low-flow partial-record stations; daily chemical, sediment, and temperature stations; and stations where some chemical, sediment, and biological data have been collected on an intermittent basis.

In this first part of a continuing investigation the data obtained from one year of extensive literature search and data compilation are summarized. The regional groundwater hydrology in the salt-dome basin is defined with respect to (1) groundwater flow, (2) facies changes, (3) geological structure, (4) recharge and discharge, (5) freshwater-saltwater relations, and (6) identification of localities where additional data are needed. From the 50 piercement-type salt domes in the Mississippi salt-dome basin three domes (Richton, Cypress Creek, and Lampton) were selected for more intensive study. The water will be pumped from the Floridan aquifer--a sequence of carbonate rocks about 1,100 feet thick underlying surficial sand and clay deposits. A highly fractured and transmissive zone about 500 feet below National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 will supply a large proportion of the water. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional digital flow models were used to evaluate the hydrogeology of the area. The model-derived leakance distribution (a property of the confining bed) for a 285-square-mile area ranged from 0.00002 to 0.008 per day. Model-derived transmissivity values for the Floridan aquifer ranged from 37,000 to 600,000 feet squared per day. Model-derived specific yield values for the surficial aquifer ranged from 0.05 to 0.30. The three-dimensional model was used to predict drawdowns in both the Floridan and surficial aquifers in response to a 40 million gallon per day stress. Mass-balance data from a 30-day simulation with no recharge from rainfall show percentage of withdrawn water that is derived from: (1) aquifer storage, (2) the Hillsborough River, and (3) reduction of evapotranspiration losses. During the period 1972-79, the bedload in the Clearwater River ranged from about 50,000 tons (45,000 metric tons) per year in 1972 and 1974 to about 1,000 tons (910 metric tons) per year in the drought years of 1973 and 1977. Suspended-sediment load at the same location ranged from about 1,000,000 tons (910,000 metric tons) per year to about 50,000 tons (45,000 metric tons) per year for the same respective years.

In the Snake River, bedload ranged from about 200,000 tons (180,000 metric tons) per year for 1972 and 1974 to about 10,000 tons (9,100 metric tons) per year in 1973; bedload was too low for determination in 1977. Suspended-sediment load ranged from about 5,000,000 tons (4,500,000 metric tons) per year in 1974 to about 50,000 tons (45,000 metric tons) per year in 1977.

Bedload thus ranged from about 2 to 10 percent of suspended load and average about 5 percent.

For either river, bedload particle size was bimodal. Modes were in the medium- to coarse-sand range and in the very coarse-gravel range. Suspended-sediment particle size was generally finer than sand.

These models have been used to provide information and predictions for water managers. Too frequently, groundwater was neglected in water-resource planning because managers believed that it could not be adequately evaluated in terms of availability, quality, and effect of development on surface water supplies. Now, however, with newly developed digital groundwater models, effects of development can be predicted. Such models have been used to predict hydrologic and quality changes under different stresses. These models have grown in complexity over the last 10 years from simple one-layer flow models to three-dimensional simulations of groundwater flow which may include solute transport, heat transport, effects of land subsidence, and encroachment of salt water. This paper illustrates, through case histories, how predictive groundwater models have provided the information needed for the sound planning and management of water resources in the United States.
