Water-quality characteristics were determined for four selected lakes to provide background data for evaluating changes that may occur in the lakes because of urbanization. Precipitation of calcium carbonate is suggested by high pH values and a decrease in the calcium concentration when magnesium, sodium, and chloride concentrations increase. Pollution is indicated by chloride concentrations that increased from 18 to 57 milligrams per liter in 1978. The eutrophic state of the lakes is suggested by dissolved oxygen supersaturated near the surface and less than 0.1 milligram per liter near the deepest parts of the lakes. Determination of the trophic state of the lakes provided trophic state indices as high as 69-2. Phosphorus concentrations were significantly higher in two of the lakes sampled. Anacystic and Oscillatoria were the dominant phytoplankton genera. Phytoplankton blooms occurred throughout the year with the highest sampled concentration yielding 890,000 cells per milliliter.

Consequently, the mining of offshore sand deposits as supplemental sources of construction aggregate may becom e necessary. For this reason, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of Natural Resources of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico have conducted investigations of potential offshore sand deposits on the Puerto Rico insular shelf. This report provides information on the composition of surficial sediments on the southwestern Puerto Rico shelf (fig. 1), an area that may be one of the more favorable potential sites for offshore sand resources.\r\n\r\nWater depths over most of the study area are less than 22 meters (m). The sea floor is composed of live and dead patch and fringing reefs, areas of rock exposures, and sedim ent-covered areas. The adjacent coastline includes prominent embaym ents and a conspicuous rock promontory (Cabo Rojo) connected by a tombolo to the mainland of Puerto Rico. The study area is in the belt of northeast trade winds. Waves approach the coast predominantly from the southeast, resulting in a predominantly westward littoral drift along the south coast (Grove and Trumbull, 1978). Local sand movement on the southern shelf is shown by an active sand wave field south of Bah1a Sucia in which the sand wave crests have migrated toward the southwest (Grove and Trumbull, 1978). These sites are operated by the municipal governments of Arecibo, Caguas, Cayey, Humacao, Mayaguez and Guayama. The bulk of waste is of domestic origin but wastes from local industries and institutions are also handled. Data were collected between February and July 1976.
Parameters measured included temperature, specific conductance, pH, color, common ions, cyanide, macronutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus species), total organic carbon, dissolved oxygen, BOD5 (biochemical oxygen demand), COD (chemical oxygen demand), total and fecal conform, trace metals, and phenols.
The results obtained indicated that leachate from most sites is enriched in common ions, macronutrients, and trace metals. A sample obtained from runoff at the Cayey landfill was the only one with an acidic pH (5.8). It had a common ion concentration of 10,750 mg/L (milligrams per liter), or twice that found in leachate contained within the buried refuse. The leachate from the Caguas site had the highest common ion concentration (12,520 mg/L).
Maximum values for other parameters were as follows: Temperature, 33°C (or about 10°C above ambient ground-water temperature); specific conductance, 19,200 micromhos per centimeter; color, 2,200 units; cyanide, 30 ug/L (micrograms per liter); total nitrogen, 600 mg/L; total phosphorus, 4.3 mg/L; total organic carbon, 500 mg/L; 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, 5,540 mg/L; chemical oxygen demand, 3,000 mg/L; total coliform bacteria, 410,000 colonies per 100 milliliters; fecal coliform bacteria, 14,000 colonies per 100 milliliters; total arsenic, 54 ug/L; total cadmium, 15 ug/L; total chromium, 1,600 ug/L; total lead, 1,10C ug/L; total mercury, 2.6 ug/L; total nickel, 1,300 ug/L; and total phenols, 1,100 ug/L.
Pollution of water resources is limited to the periphery of the sites. A major problem throughout seems to be related to operating methods. Under the conditions found, large quantities of rainwater and runoff could be available for leachate production. Generation of leachate may not be significant at present probably because of the recent establishment of the landfills (less than 5 years).
Monitoring at these or similar sites in Puerto Rico can be limited to defining present baseline water-quality conditions and implementation of a sampling program. Baseline data could be limited to specific conductance, pH, color, common ions, and dissolved oxygen. A scheduled sampling program could be limited to specific conductance readings and measurement of concentration of bicarbonate, chloride, and dissolved oxygen.

quality in San Francisco Bay. A 1-year study tested the network operation and determined that analysis of the data could demonstrate the major changes in salinity, temperature, and light-attenuation distributions known to occur, based on earlier research, in response to variations of delta inflow and to other physical processes. Observations of eddies at two stations, of the influence of water from a river flooding in the extreme south bay, and of difference in salinity and temperature laterally across the entrance to the south bay are all new but are consistent with existing models. The pH, dissolved oxygen, and light-attenuation measurements, while adequate to observe small-scale vertical variations, are not sufficiently sensitive to detect the effects of phytoplankton blooms. The aquifer is being increasingly developed for irrigation.
\nDuring the drought of 1976, nearly 24,000 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for irrigation, more than double that of the previous year. The number of irrigation pumping centers more than doubled from 1975 to 1977. Nearly all water is pumped from drift aquifers, except in the eastern parts of Sherburne and Wright Counties, where Paleozoic sandstone beds are a reliable source.
\nPhysical and hydrologic properties of the surficial aquifer were determined by test augering, pumping tests, and laboratory sieve analyses. The aquifer is predominantly medium to coarse sand with lesser amounts of gravel in much of the study area. The Sauk River valley in Stearns County is nearly 50 percent poorly sorted gravel of irregular thickness. Saturated thickness of sand in the Maine Prairie area locally exceeds 100 feet, and transmissivity exceeds 40,000 feet squared per day. Similar deposits in Sherburne County exceed 80 feet in thickness, transmissivity exceeds 30,000 feet squared per day, and wells theoretically could yield 2,000 to 3,000 gallons per minute. Theoretical well yields of less than 100 gallons per minute can be expected where saturated thickness is less than 20 feet and transmissivity is less than 5,000 feet squared per day. Pumping tests indicate horizontal to vertical ratios of hydraulic conductivity ranging from 2-27:1.
\nAverage annual precipitation is 27 inches, about 8 of which is recharge to the surficial aquifer. Regional ground-water movement is toward the Mississippi River, which transects the area. Tributary streams and lakes act as controls for local flow systems. At extreme low flow in August 1976, mainstem gains in streamflow in the Elk, St. Francis, Sauk, and Mississippi Rivers averaged 0.4, 0.4, 0.2, and 2.5 cubic feet per second per river mile, respectively.
\nGround water is of the calcium bicarbonate type and is suitable for most uses. Relatively high nitrate and chloride concentrations occur in a heavily irrigated area in Sherburne County.
\nSurficial aquifers in Sherburne County and the Maine Prairie area of Stearns County were simulated by two-dimensional digital ground-water-flow models. Calibration was achieved by matching calculated water-table heads and streamflow gains with observed field values. Aquifer responses to pumping stresses under present and hypothetically expanded development were determined for average and below average recharge conditions.
\nIrrigation withdrawals for 1977 totaling 15.6 cubic feet per second from 96 pumping centers were included in the Sherburne steady-state model. Increasing withdrawals to 52.2 cubic feet per second from 153 pumping centers would lower regional water levels as much as 8 feet within a few years at normal recharge rates.
\nIrrigation withdrawals in 1977, totaling 2.0 cubic feet per second from 19 pumping centers, were included in the Maine Prairie steady-state model. Increasing withdrawals to 10.8 cubic feet per second from 42 pumping centers would lower regional water levels as much as 18 feet at normal recharge rates.
\nBoth modeled areas will support additional withdrawals, but caution must be exercised because lowering ground-water levels will also lower lake levels and reduce streamflow. In some areas, aquifer dewatering will reduce individual well yields.
