Well and spring data from near the construction site are tabulated, and spring inflow in Tijeras Creek is shown. Water levels in selected wells are shown in hydrographs based on monthly measurements and continuous water level measurements. This report includes all of the data in a similar previous report (U.S. Geological Survey Open-file report 78-238), plus approximately one additional year of data. Fifteen drilling sites were selected that had one or more of the following characteristics: medium-to thick-bedded limestones within 200 feet of land surface, structural lows, significant streamflow gains and losses, elongated sinkholes, straight stream reaches, linear features or other surface indications of solution cavities at depth. The 15 test wells produced from less than 1 to about 600 gallons per minute and had an average yield of 68 gallons per minute, measured while pumping the wells with compressed air. The average driller-reported yield for the area is five gallons per minute. Specific capacities for the four highest yielding wells ranged from 0.6 to 357 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown after 8 hours of pumping at rates ranging from 70 to 225 gallons per minute. Additional drilling at two sites revealed extensive solution openings. At one site, drawdown in five observation wells did not exceed 8.5 feet during 48 hours of pumping at an average rate of 502 gallons per minute. Holocene estuarine silt and clay cover most of the bay floor; relict eolian and deltaic sand occurs along the eastern shore; sandy patches are present in the main channel owing to higher tidal current velocities. Organic content is high along the western shore, where tidal flats are extensive, and in the slough at the mouth of Coyote Creek where wastewaters discharge.</p>\n<p>Thirty-one species of benthonic foraminifera were identified in surficial sediments of San Francisco Bay estuary; of these, 20 species were stained red by rose Bengal and are considered as live. Water depth, sediment textural characteristics, salinity, organic matter, sediment pH, and biological competition were considered as factors that might affect distribution of foraminifera. Four ecologic zones based on observed trends in the distribution and abundance of several species correlate well with some environmental factors. Four groups based on the Q-mode analysis of frequency counts of foraminiferal assemblages are reasonably similar to the four ecologic zones. These zones, showing restricted depth ranges, are: Inner Coastal Zone, where Elphidium incertum obscurum and Trochammina infiata are prominent; Outer Coastal Zone, dominated by Ammonia beccarii tepida and Elphidium incatum; Deep Bay Zone, where Elphidietla hannai, Elphidium incertum clavatum, Hopkinsina pacifica, and Bolivina spp. appear in abundance; and Deep Channel Zone, where Elphidiella hannai is most abundant. In the Inner Coastal Zone, salinity due to large fluctuations is a limiting factor for many species. Substrate textural characteristics are primary determinants of the distribution of agglutinated foraminifers. The percentage of organic matter in the sediment correlates well with the abundance of Elphidium incertum obscurum, a ubiquitous species in San Francisco Bay. Sediment pH is not critical. In order to achieve this goal, CODE has been designed (1) to define the different space and time scales of the physical parameters important to the shelf flow field and (2) to identify and describe the essential kinematical and dynamical processes governing wind‐driven circulation on the continental shelf.</p><p>A variety of models exist for the wind‐forced response of continental shelf waters. The salient differences among these models lies in the assumed balances between terms in the governing equations. For example,<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Gill and Schumann</i><span>&nbsp;</span>[1974] in a barotropic model assume a geostrophic cross‐shelf momentum balance but include the time‐dependent and surface and bottom stress terms in the along‐shelf momentum balance.<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Csanady</i><span>&nbsp;</span>[1978] in his arrested topographic wave model involving bottom friction assumes a quasisteady alongshelf response neglecting advective terms and retaining the geostrophic cross‐shelf balance. Various shelf wave models assume inviscid dynamics and other models assume a simple balance between surface and bottom stress in shallow water. The slumping is believed to be related to the liberation of free gas by clathrate decomposition and consequent weakening of unconsolidated sediments above the clathrate. Virginia. These diatoms are mostly cosmopolitan marine forms, but some species suggest deposition in brackish water that had a freshwater inflow. The regional stratigraphy, as well as the pelecypods and foraminifers, indicates that the beds may have been laid down in a lagoonal or estuarine environment. Within this succession, three lithotectonic units, or sequences of rock that were deformed semi-independently of each other, have somewhat different structural characteristics. Both the Alleghenian and Taconic orogenies have left their imprint on the rocks. Wind and water gaps are structurally controlled, thus placing doubt upon the hypothesis of regional superposition. Wisconsinan deposits and erosion effects are common. We will examine these geologic features as well as some of the economic deposits in the area. </p><p>Figure 1 is an index map of the field-trip area, showing the trip route and quadrangle coverage. They suggested that uranium was lost both during crystallization, perhaps as the volatile hexafluoride, and/or later through the action of ground water. Similar results have been obtained by Shatkov et al. (1970) and Kovalev and Maylasova (1973).</p><p> Zielinski (1978) compared the uranium contents of paired nonhydrated glassy and primarily devitrified phases of a number of subalkaline rhyolitic lavas and tuffs from various localities in the western United States. He found a generally smaller degree of uranium loss than had been observed by Rosholt et al. (1971) for peralkaline materials. The science was also fragmented among surface‐water hydrology, agricultural hydrology, groundwater hydrology, oceanology, hydrometeorology, and hydrogeochemistry. Chalcedony collected from and directly beneath thick accumulations of rhyolite ash contain as much as 250 ppm uranium in a pre-ash topographic low and lesser concentrations (10 to 160 ppm) elsewhere. Differences in the U concentration of chalcedony collected from approximately the same stratigraphic horizon reflect the enrichment of uranium in ground water as it percolated downward and basinward through the overlying rhyolite ash. Uranium is homogeneously distributed as a uranyl species within the chalcedony and reflects coprecipitation of dissolved uranium and colloidal silica in a uraniferous silica-gel. Laboratory measurements of the partitioning of uranium between various solutions and silica-gel precipitates indicate that, for ranges of pH and dissolved carbonate typical of ground water, dried silica-gel contains about 400 to 1,000 times the uranium concentration of the solution from which it forms. Uranium is postulated to be incorporated as an adsorbed uranyl-silica-hydroxyl complex. A 20-m.y.-minimum apparent age for uraniferous chalcedony was obtained by U-Pb isotope dating. Reported minimum ages for nearby sedimentary uranium deposits generally lie between this age and the age of rhyolite which hosts the silica (32.4 + or - 2.6 m.y.). The structures include closely spaced calcite-impregnated columns, tubes, and other configurations with subcylindrical to bizarre cross sections and predominantly vertical orientation in coarse, barely coherent pumice sands along the south shore of the lake. Many structures terminate upward in extensive calcareous layers of caliche and tufa. Locally they enter the bases of tufa mounds and towers. A common form superficially resembles root casts and animal burrows except that branching is mostly up instead of down.
