The purposes of this investigation were to consolidate and update data, to determine the extent and effects of irrigation development on the ground-water resource, to determine the chemical quality of the ground water in relation to irrigation use, to describe the general operation of the hydrologic system, and to identify problem areas where intensive quantitative studies will be needed by State and local agencies for planning and management of the resource. This study began in 1972 as part of a cooperative program of ground-water investigations between the Kansas Geological Survey and the U.S. Geological Survey. Support in this study was provided by the Division of Water Resources of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture and the Division of Environment of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80218","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Kansas Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Gutentag, E.D., Lobmeyer, D.H., and Slagle, S.E., 1980, Geohydrology of southwestern Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-218, Report: 97 p.; 11 Plates: 31.40 x 27.20 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80218.","productDescription":"Report: 97 p.; 11 Plates: 31.40 x 27.20 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":402936,"rank":13,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402933,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402930,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402928,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402927,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402926,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402932,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402935,"rank":12,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402931,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402929,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402934,"rank":11,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402925,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140894,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0218/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -102.04376220703125,\n              37.004746084814784\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.04974365234375,\n              37.004746084814784\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.04974365234375,\n              38.47079371120379\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.04376220703125,\n              38.47079371120379\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.04376220703125,\n              37.004746084814784\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8a23","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gutentag, Edwin D.","contributorId":76287,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gutentag","given":"Edwin","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159405,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lobmeyer, David H.","contributorId":85156,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lobmeyer","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159406,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Slagle, Steven E.","contributorId":35284,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slagle","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159404,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

In comparison with incubation time at 12 mg/L DO, time to median hatch was significantly longer (P&lt;0.05) at 2 mg/L at 6&deg;C (no hatch at 1 mg/L), at 3 mg/L or less at 4&deg;C, and at 4 mg/L or less at 2&deg;C. The time between hatching of the first and last eggs varied inversely with temperature. Mean total lengths of newly hatched fry were significantly shortened (P &lt; 0.05) at 1 and 2 mg/L DO. At 6 and 8&deg;C, percent survival through hatching was greater than at 2 and 4&deg;C at DO of 4 mg/L or more, but fell to zero at 1 mg/L. The percentage of normal fry produced decreased noticeably below 4 mg/L DO. The optimum temperature for highest percentage survival of normal fry decreased directly with the level of dissolved oxygen. The temperatures at which the highest percentages of normal fry hatched from eggs incubated at DO concentrations of 4 or 8, 2, and 1 mg/L, were 6, 4, and 2&deg;C, respectively-indicating a decreasing DO demand by embryos incubated at the lower temperatures. Our findings supported a previously published hypothesis that DO concentrations below 4 mg/L can be adverse to survival and development of coregonid embryos in nature.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1980)42[3:DASOEO]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Brooke, L., and Colby, P., 1980, Development and survival of embryos of lake herring at different constant oxygen concentrations and temperatures: Progressive Fish-Culturist, v. 42, no. 1, p. 3-9, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1980)42[3:DASOEO]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"3","endPage":"9","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":132748,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"42","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db66723e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brooke, L.T.","contributorId":60589,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brooke","given":"L.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308051,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Colby, P.J.","contributorId":101233,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colby","given":"P.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308052,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Widths of sand ribbons range from 40 to 120 m and intervening erosional furrows, from 15 to 50 m. A conceptual model shows that the scale and orientation of current lineations agree with the dimensions and axial directions of Langmuir circulations theoretically generated by a combination either of southerly and southwesterly winds with regular trains of swell from the southern hemisphere or of two sets of wave trains crossing from the south and west. These samples show that, although the predominant genera (Elphidium, Cibicides, and Saccammina) are the same as those reported by other investigators for this region, the environmental factors that control the generic distribution are more complex than were previously postulated. Generic distribution patterns derived from this study are correlated with the bottom topography and sediment distribution as well as the temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen concentrations of the bottom waters. The six predominant species observed in the samples (and their phenotypic variants) are cryophilic forms known to occur in the Virginian and Nova Scotian biogeographic provinces and in Arctic waters. Species distribution patterns also correlate well with bottom topography and hydrographic factors, but may be modified by seasonal fluctuations in test production and by redistribution of dead tests. At most stations, specimens of Elphidium subarcticum were attached to quartz grains. This phenomenon, which has not been reported before, probably is an adaptation to a high-energy environment. The distribution pattern of Elphidium subarcticum along with those of the sessile species Webbinella concava and Vasiglobulina n.sp. corroborate sedimentological evidence that the accumulation of modern sediments in the area is negligible.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0377-8398(80)90006-7","issn":"03778398","usgsCitation":"Poag, C.W., Knebel, H., and Todd, R., 1980, Distribution of modern benthic foraminifers on the New Jersey Outer Continental Shelf: Marine Micropaleontology, v. 5, no. Two alternative insurance protection schemes were investigated: coinsurance and fixed coverage. The question investigated here is to what extent does the insurance scheme influence how purchasers respond to flood risks? Floods were assumed to be log normally distributed and the effects on the purchase of insurance of uncertainties in the parameters of the distribution were explored using response surface analysis. Results indicate that fixed coverage insurance provisions shift most of the uncertainty in the physical parameters governing natural disaster occurrences away from the insuree and onto the insurer. Specifically addressed are two common uncertainties in this class of two-dimensional hydrodynamic models: the treatment of the boundary conditions at open boundaries and the treatment of lateral boundary conditions. The accuracy of the models is tested with a set of numerical experiments in rectangular and curvilinear channels with constant and variable depth. The results indicate that errors in velocity at the open boundary can be significant when boundary conditions for water surface elevation are specified. Methods are suggested for minimizing these errors. The results also show that continuity is better maintained within the spatial domain of interest when &lsquo;smooth&rsquo; curve-sided elements are used at shoreline boundaries than when piecewise linear boundaries are used. Finally, a method for network development is described which is based upon a continuity criterion to gauge accuracy. A finite element network for San Francisco Bay, California, is used as an example.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR016i001p00187","usgsCitation":"Walters, R.A., and Cheng, R.T., 1980, Accuracy of an estuarine hydrodynamic model using smooth elements: Water Resources Research, v. 16, no. 1, p. 187-195, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR016i001p00187.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"187","endPage":"195","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":552,"text":"San Francisco Bay-Delta","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5079,"text":"Pacific Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":325055,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.3544921875,\n              37.19533058280065\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.17919921875001,\n              37.19533058280065\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.17919921875001,\n              38.453588708941375\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.3544921875,\n              38.453588708941375\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.3544921875,\n              37.19533058280065\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"16","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5784c335e4b0e02680be58f0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Walters, Roy A.","contributorId":74877,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walters","given":"Roy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cheng, Ralph T.","contributorId":69134,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cheng","given":"Ralph","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642145,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Reports in this series, prepared cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources, provide data to enable interested parties to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.</p><p>This report, like the others in the series, contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. Supplementary data such as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration are included in reports of this series only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.</p><p>This report includes individual discussions of selected major areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1978. The project area is 15 to 20 miles south of Lake Erie and is bordered on the west by Ohio. Drift of Pleistocene age (Wisconsinan Age) covers most of the area, which is a maturely dissected plateau. The drift in the upland area is mostly till, which ranges in thickness from 0 to 25 feet. In the large stream valleys and deep buried valleys the drift is as much as 500 feet thick. The bedrock was mapped in detail and consists of rocks of Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian age. Devonian rocks underlie the entire area and form the bedrock surface in most of the northern one third of the area and in the deep bedrock valleys. Mississippian formations underlie the uplands in the southern two thirds of the area; these are capped by thin remnants of Pennsylvanian rocks and knobs near the south edge of the area.","language":"English","publisher":"Pennsylvania Geological Survey","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Schiner, G.R., and Gallaher, J.T., 1979, Geology and groundwater resources of western Crawford County, Pennsylvania: Water Resource Report 46, vii, 103 p.; Maps: 3 Sheets.","productDescription":"vii, 103 p.; Maps: 3 Sheets","costCenters":[{"id":629,"text":"Water Resources Division","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":276095,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70047437.PNG"},{"id":276096,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/cs/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_015547.zip"}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","county":"Crawford County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -80.519758,41.481003 ], [ -80.519758,41.851089 ], [ -79.613419,41.851089 ], [ -79.613419,41.481003 ], [ -80.519758,41.481003 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52021ae4e4b0e21cafa49c53","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schiner, George R.","contributorId":22743,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schiner","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":482042,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gallaher, John T.","contributorId":11585,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gallaher","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":482041,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The first settlers utilized seepage springs on hillsides. Such springs occur along steep slopes where the water table intersects the land surface. As the population of the region grew, it became increasingly necessary to resort to shallow dug wells for domestic water supplies. Such wells also served as sources of water for the villages that developed, in time, around crossroad taverns. Seepage springs and dug wells are a satisfactory source of water in a virgin environment but are quickly polluted by careless waste-disposal practices. Thus disposal of domestic wastes in shallow pits resulted in epidemics of water-borne diseases as the villages grew into towns. This resulted in the third phase of water-supply development, which consisted of installing water lines and supplying water to homes from town-owned wells. In time, some of these wells became polluted and others failed to supply adequate water for the increasing needs of the larger urban areas. In the fourth phase these areas met their needs by drawing water from nearby streams. By the early years of this century it was possible to make this water palatable and relatively safe as a result of improvement in filtration methods. Streams, of course, have highly variable rates of flow and, as towns grew into small cities, the minimum flow of many streams was not adequate to meet the water-supply needs. This problem was solved in the fifth phase by building dams on the streams. We are still in this phase as we build larger and larger reservoirs to meet our growing water needs. Thus, through five phases of growth in the Piedmont and mountains we have advanced from the point where ground water was the sole source of supply to the point where it is the <u>forgotten resource</u>. For reasons to be explained below, a sixth phase can be foreseen in which ground water and surface water are recognized as parts of the hydrologic system with advantages in their conjunctive development and use.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Water conservation and alternative water supplies: proceedings of a southeast regional conference","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"Georgia Institute of Technology","publisherLocation":"Atlanta, GA","usgsCitation":"Heath, R., 1979, Better utilization of ground water in the Piedmont and mountain region of the southeast, <i>in</i> Water conservation and alternative water supplies: proceedings of a southeast regional conference, p. 145-160.","productDescription":"16 p.; ill.; map","startPage":"145","endPage":"160","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":265708,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Piedmont","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -91.6525,24.52 ], [ -91.6525,42.2694 ], [ -73.9025,42.2694 ], [ -73.9025,24.52 ], [ -91.6525,24.52 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50f6887fe4b0f5392eb7e77c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Heath, Ralph C.","contributorId":53359,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Heath","given":"Ralph C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471942,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The oxygen isotopic composition was determined directly on inclusion fluids in sphalerite and was estimated from analyses of quartz, illite, rhodochrosite, siderite, and adularia. The carbon isotopic composition was estimated from analyses of rhodochrosite and siderite. The ranges in isotopic composition for water and CO2 in the fluids associated with the formation of each of the minerals is given below (number of determinations given in parentheses):Mineral delta D (sub H2) O ppm delta 18 O (sub H2) O ppm delta 13 C (sub CO2) ppmSphalerite -81 to -54 (4) -10.1 to -4.5 (4)Quartz -97 to -86 (4) -5.9 to 1.8 (18)Illite -62 to -50 (8) -1.6 to 1.2(7)Chlorite -64 to -55 (10) -2.2 to 0.8 (10)Adularia 4.2 (1)Rhodochrosite -82 to -78 (2) 4.2 to 9.4 (9) -5.7 to -4.2 (9)Siderite 4.9 to 9.9 (6) -6.9 to -2.7 (6)The delta D (sub H2) O and delta 18 O (sub H2) O values of fluids associated with the formation of sphalerite, quartz, illite/chlorite, and carbonate minerals differ substantially from one another, and these differences appear to have been maintained throughout the depositional history, regardless of the positions of the minerals in the paragenetic sequence.The data suggest that waters from three coexisting reservoirs fed the vein system alternately and episodically during vein formation, and apparently there was little mixing of the fluids from the different reservoirs. The hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon isotope data suggest that the carbonate waters were deep seated, probably dominantly magmatic, in origin. The sphalerite and illite/chlorite waters must have been dominantly meteoric in origin and substantially oxygen shifted by exchange with the volcanic country rocks. The quartz waters were also oxygen shifted meteoric waters but were some 40 per mil lower in deuterium content than the sphalerite and illite/chlorite waters.We propose that the quartz fluids entered the vein system from reservoirs beneath the mountainous areas to the north in the vicinity of the present Continental Divide, but that the sphalerite and illite/chlorite fluids entered the vein system from a topographically low area to the south along the structural moat of the Creede caldera. The difference in delta D between the two meteoric waters may reflect differences in altitude of the recharge areas for the two reservoirs or may be clue to isotopic evolution of the closed-basin lake and interstitial waters in the moat surrounding the Creede caldera.","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.74.8.1832","usgsCitation":"Bethke, P.M., and Rye, R.O., 1979, Environment of ore deposition in the Creede mining district, San Juan Mountains, Colorado; Part IV, source of fluids, from oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon isotope studies: Economic Geology, v. 74, no. 8, p. 1832-1851, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.74.8.1832.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"1832","endPage":"1851","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":272978,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"San Juan Mountains","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.14,37.0 ], [ -108.14,38.2 ], [ -105.86,38.2 ], [ -105.86,37.0 ], [ -108.14,37.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"74","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51a72366e4b09db86f875ccd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bethke, P.
