The abundance and size of extinct travertine deposits suggest that in many places, such as pinnacles at the southwest end of the Searles Lake basin, California, spring activity was once more widespread and copious than it is now. Travertine of Eocene age has been reported, and a scattering of later Tertiary occurrences is known. But where age has been inferred, the inferred ages are predominantly Pleistocene or younger. So travertine seems to be a geologically transient phenomenon, subject either to removal by erosion or to burial and disappearance. Many travertine deposits are known to be on or close to faults. Their occurrence in otherwise structurally featureless alluvial valleys may, therefore, suggest the possibility of a hidden fault. From the Front Range to the Pacific, more than 300 travertime deposits have been identified. The map shows that the deposits are widely dispersed. However, there are apparent groupings on the Wasatch Fault and associated tectonic areas trending northward in Utah and southern Idaho, and also near the great fault zone that marks the eastern boundary of the Sierra Nevada, California. The stream-gaging station was discontinued on July 5, 1933. Daily streamflow records obtained at this site are published in the annual series of Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers beginning in 1925. Monthly and yearly summaries are published in Water-Supply Paper 1312.</p><p>In October 1960, the Geological Survey resumed collection of hydrologic data in the Mountain Creek watershed by establishing three stream-gaging stations and one reservoir-content station. The data-collection sites are on Mountain Creek near Cedar Hill, Walnut Creek near Mansfield, Mountain Creek at Grand Prairie, and Mountain Creek Lake near Grand Prairie (fig. 1). In October 1970, the Geological Survey assumed operation of the stage station Mountain Creek near Duncanville (fig. 1).</p><p>Water-quality data for the 1977 water year for sites in the study area are presented in downstream order along with the streamflow data in the section \"Compilation of data.\" A complete tabulation of data, including laboratory analyses, for the 1977 water year for the Trinity River basin is given in Water resources data for Texas, TX-77-1, 1977.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to compile the records of streamflow and reservoir content for the year into a form which facilitates their use in detailed analyses of the Mountain Creek hydrologic system. This report contains basic-hydrologic data for the 1977 water year (Oct. 1, 1976-Sept. 30, 1977). The most heavily stressed of these systems is the Pearl Harbor on Oahu. The Pearl Harbor basal aquifer supplies as much as 277 million gallons per day. Since early in this century, spring discharge has been declining while pumpage has been increasing. Total ground-water discharge has remained steady despite short-term fluctuations. Some wells show general increases in chloride concentration while others remain steady. Chloride concentrations throughout the area show no apparent increase since 1970. Basal water head maps of the Pearl Harbor area clearly reflect the natural discharge points, which are the springs located along the shore near the center of Pearl Harbor. Basal-water hydrographs show a general decline of about 0.09 foot per year. This implies depletion of storage at a rate of about 25 million gallons per day. Of 25 test wells, 8 produced between 50 and 116 gallons per minute. The Gatlinburg area, located on the northern flank of the Great Smoky Mountains , is underlain by fractured, variably metamorphosed, sedimentary rocks. The most effective criteria for choosing well sites were valley areas with 7 percent or less land slope, presence of fracture traces, and deep overburden. Mapped faults were not a good indicator of ground-water occurrence. The largest amounts of ground water occur in irregularly shaped zones of deep and intense weathering in the rocks underlying broad, fracture-controlled valleys. Permeable zones along fractures at depths of 170 feet or less supply most of the water. The 18 samples are briefly described in table 1. Thirteen of these samples were collected from seven holes that were drilled in connection with the Henry Mountains EMRIA (Energy Mineral Rehabilitation Inventory and Analyses) study (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978). The locations of the seven core holes and the four other sampling sites are shown on figure 2.</p><p>The Henry Mountains coal field is adjacent to the Henry Mountains of southeastern Utah. The basin is a long, narrow syncline about 110 km long and 24 km wide bounded on the west by the Waterpocket Fold and on the east by the Henry Mountains. The most comprehensive geologic report available on the area is by Hunt and others (1953). Their work included a considerable amount of information on the coal resources. Other work in the area concerning coal or stratigraphy of coal bearing units includes: Doelling (1972), Peterson and Ryder (1975), Doelling (1975), Law (1977; 1978; 1979 a,b), and U.S. Department of the Interior (1978).</p><p>In the Henry Mountains field, there are three coal bearing units in rocks of Late Cretaceous age. In ascending order they are the Dakota Sandstone, the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale, and the Emery Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale. The coal beds of the Henry Mountains coal field originated as layers of peat that were deposited, for the most part, in coastal swamp environments. Individual coal beds are discontinuous and exhibit large variations in thickness and quality. Equations relating flood magnitude to basin characteristics were developed for exceedance probabilities of 0.5 to 0.01 (2- to 100-year recurrence intervals). Separate equations are presented for four regions: Coast, Willamette, Rogue-Umpqua, and High Cascades. Also presented are values of flood discharges for selected exceedance probabilities and of basin characteristics for all gaging stations used in the analysis. Included are data for 230 stations in Oregon, 6 stations in southwestern Washington, and 3 stations in northwestern California. Drainage areas used in the analysis range from 0.21 to 7,280 square miles. Also included are maximum discharges for all western Oregon stations used in the analysis. At seven of the stations water may be obtained by diverting or impounding streams. Ground water is available from glacial sand-and-gravel aquifers at all the stations and from sandstone aquifers at 7 of the 12 stations. Probable well yields range from 100 to 1,000 gallons per minute from the sand and gravel and from 50 to 1,000 gallons per minute from the sandstone.</p>\n<p>The response of pumping 1,600 gallons per minute from a ground-water source at Crystal Springs, Langlade, Nevin, and Osceola was estimated by a digital model. Estimated drawdown after 10 years of pumping ranged from 10 to 28 feet (6 to 35 percent of the saturated thickness of the aquifers).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological The Miocene sea transgressed from the west or southwest, and the area subsided to a possible water depth of 500 to 2,500 m. \r\n\r\nThe Monterey Group within the study area is a time-transgressive sequence of six sandstone and shale formations. Stratigraphic cycles of interbedded sandstone and shale formations are related to the amount of terrigenous sediment input into the basin as well as the depositional environment. During periods of low terrigenous sedimentation, biogenetic sedimentation in the form of diatomite layers were interbedded with hemipelagic muds and thin turbidite sands. These diatom-rich sediments were probably deposited within the upper bathyal zone (180 to 500 m) and, during lithification, diagenetically altered to form siliceous shales and cherts. As terrigenous sedimentation increased, probably due to periodic uplift east of the study area, biogenetic sedimentation was masked until finer grained sediment at a lower rate of deposition reoccurred. As the basin filled and a higher energy environment prevailed; coarse-grained sediment was again deposited until a lower energy environment resumed. Three types of inorganic phosphate are present within the study area: nodular, Pelletal, and pebbles of sandy phosphatic mudstone. The nodular phosphate is associated with the siliceous shale formations and formed within diatomite layers before compaction and lithification. The other two types of phosphate are found within the sandstone formations and probably originated in a shallower, higher energy environment than the siliceous shales. \r\n\r\nFaulting was active during middle to late Miocene time. The change in stratigraphic thickness across the Mission fault is 350 m which may approximate the vertical (?) displacement along this fault. This displacement took place in middle to upper Miocene time and apparently caused erosion of the upper formations of the Monterey Group on the west side of the Mission fault before the Briones Formation was deposited in late Miocene time. About 1,860 square miles of the area are underlain by sufficient saturated material to supply groundwater for irrigation. Saturated thickness in the area ranges from less than 50 feet to about 270 feet. Thickness of saturated deposits in the unconsolidated aquifer in west-central Kansas has decreased as a result of groundwater withdrawals, principally for irrigation. From 1950 to 1979, the decrease in saturated thickness was negligible in some areas and as much as 80 feet in other areas.
