Approximately 1,000 of the lakes are listed by 7.5-minute quadrangle topographic-map name, lake-identification number, latitude and longitude, and county. Other data given are shape of lake, maximum length, mean width, length and development of shoreline, surface area, orientation, presence of a stream inlet or outlet, and geologic data (geologic formation of area surrounding the lake and the mined coal-bed member). Field data (sampling date, pH, specific conductance, apparent color of lake, and general vegetation along the shoreline) were collected for 287 of the lakes.\r\n\r\nTwo hundred eighty-seven lakes were sampled once for pH and specific conductance. Vegetation along the shoreline and apparent color of each lake were identified at the same time. Although these data are not sufficient to quantify the water quality of the lakes, they do illustrate the variability of these characteristics. The pH of the 287 lakes ranged from 2.5 to 10.0; however, the pH of 80 percent of them ranged from 6 to 9. Specific conductance ranged from 99 to 3,800 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius. Specific conductance for approximately 70 percent of the lakes in the Staunton and Brazil formations was less than 500 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius, but for approximately 65 percent in the Dugger and Petersburg Formations it was greater than 1,000 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius. The apparent colors of the lakes observed were varying shades of aqua, blue, brown, lime green, red, and green. Eighty percent of the lakes sampled were green.\r\n\r\nLake sizes ranged from a chosen minimum of 0.5 acre to a maximum of 344 acres. Maximum length ranged from 0.1 to 2 miles, and the mean width was generally less than 0.8 mile.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791639","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Bobo, L.L., 1979, Gazetteer of coal-mine lakes in southwestern Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1639, 1 atlas (iv, 107 p.) :maps ;31 x 46 cm.; (111 over-size sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791639.","productDescription":"1 atlas (iv, 107 p.) :maps ;31 x 46 cm.; (111 over-size sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156524,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1639/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52024,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1639/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b28e4b07f02db6b1268","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bobo, Linda L.","contributorId":104053,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bobo","given":"Linda","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188378,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

As of Sept. 30, 1977, data collection in eleven of these study areas has been completed and is now in progress in one area. This study is being made in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, the Soil Conservation Service, the San Antonio River Authority, the city of Dallas, and the Tarrant County Control and Improvement District No. 1. The 12 study areas were chosen to sample watersheds having different rainfall, topography, geology, and soils. In five of the study areas (North, Little Elm, Mukewater, Little Pond-North Elm, and Pin Oak Creeks), streamflow and rainfall records were collected prior to construction of the floodwater-retarding structures, thus affording the opportunity for analyses of the conditions \"before and after\" development. A summary of the development of the floodwater-retarding structures in each study area as of Sept. 30, 1977, is shown in table 1. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79335","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Tarrant County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1, the Soil Conservation Service, and the Texas Department of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Kidwell, C., 1979, Hydrologic data for North Creek, Trinity River basin, Texas, 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-335, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79335.","productDescription":"39 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":389445,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0335/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":153183,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0335/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"North Creek, Trinity River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.42033386230469,\n              33.16801930648876\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.250732421875,\n              33.16801930648876\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.250732421875,\n              33.28519397154413\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.42033386230469,\n              33.28519397154413\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.42033386230469,\n              33.16801930648876\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a25e4b07f02db60ed61","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kidwell, C.C.","contributorId":54998,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kidwell","given":"C.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181239,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

One stratum of Santonian age near the base of the Galembo Member of the La Luna Formation crops out at many places in the Departments of Santander and Norte de Santander and may be of commercial grade. This stratum is more than one meter thick at several places near Lebrija and near Sardinata, farther south it is locally one meter thick or more near the base of the Guadalupe Formation in the Department of Boyaca. Other phosphorite beds are found at higher stratigraphic levels in the Galembo Member and the Guadalupe Formation, and at some places these may be commercial also. A stratigraphically lower phosphorite occurs below the Galembo Member in the Capacho Formation (Cenomanian age) in at least one area near the town of San Andres, Santander. A phosphorite or pebbly phosphate conglomerate derived from erosion of the Galembo Member forms the base of the Umir Shale and the equivalent Colon Shale at many places.\r\n\r\nDeposition of the apatite took place upon the continental shelf in marine water of presumed moderate depth between the Andean geosyncline and near-shore detrital deposits adjacent to the Guayana shield. Preliminary calculations indicate phosphorite reserves of approximately 315 million metric tons in 9 areas, determined from measurements of thickness, length of the outcrop, and by projecting the reserves to a maximum of 1,000 meters down the dip of the strata into the subsurface. Two mines were producing phosphate rock in 1969; one near Turmeque, Boyaca, and the other near Tesalia, Huila.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791525","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Maughan, E.K., Zambrano O., F., Mojica G., P., Abozaglo M., J., Pachon P., F., and Duran R., R., 1979, Paleontologic and stratigraphic relations of phosphate beds in Upper Cretaceous rocks of the Cordillera Oriental, Colombia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1525, iii, 101 p., 7 over-size sheets :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791525.","productDescription":"iii, 101 p., 7 over-size sheets :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153730,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51469,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":51470,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":51471,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":51472,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":51473,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":51474,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":51475,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1525/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db688f31","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Maughan, Edwin K.","contributorId":85172,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maughan","given":"Edwin","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186635,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zambrano O., Francisco","contributorId":54606,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zambrano O.","given":"Francisco","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186632,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mojica G., Pedro","contributorId":67102,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mojica G.","given":"Pedro","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186633,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Abozaglo M., Jacob","contributorId":74776,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Abozaglo M.","given":"Jacob","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186634,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Pachon P., Fernando","contributorId":15226,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pachon P.","given":"Fernando","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186631,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Duran R., Raul","contributorId":106521,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Duran R.","given":"Raul","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186636,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

In the northern Adobe Range, where the entire Permian sequence is approximately correlative with the Phosphoria Formation, it is 200 m thick and averages 1.7 percent P2O5 . In the southern Adobe Range, the Permian sequence is more than 1,700 m thick, and the upper half which is roughly correlative with the Phosphoria Formation averages more than 2 percent P2O5. Some thin beds in rocks of Permian age contain more than 20 percent P2O5. \r\n\r\nPhosphatic rocks of the Adobe Range were deposited in shallow water among islands in the western part of the epicontinental Phosphoria sea. The continental margin and the open ocean lay far to the west. At the same time, the Phosphoria Formation was being deposited in the eastern and central parts of the Phosphoria sea. Theories based on the work of Kasakov done in 1937 relating phosphate deposition directly to sites of upwelling oceanic waters are questioned. Nondeposition of diluent materials such as detritus and carbonate is probably of more importance in producing phosphate in economic concentrations than is geographic position with respect to upwelling waters.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79239","usgsCitation":"Ketner, K., 1979, Phosphatic Permian rocks of the Adobe Range, Nevada, and their environment of deposition: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-239, ii, 11 leaves :map ;28 cm.; (14 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79239.","productDescription":"ii, 11 leaves :map ;28 cm.; (14 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153166,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0239/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49101,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0239/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db6876b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ketner, Keith Brindley","contributorId":18332,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ketner","given":"Keith Brindley","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181236,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A digital model calibrated to conditions in West Fork Blue River was used to predict alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>Alternative waste loads that would permit instream dissolved-oxygen concentrations of at least 5.0 milligrams per liter for West Fork Blue River in Washington County, Ind., were determined. All point-source waste loads that potentially impact West Fork Blue River are in the town of Salem. The Salem municipal wastewater-treatment facility is the only facility in the modeled reach that has a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit to discharge organic waste.</p><p>In-stream dissolved-oxygen concentration averaged 96.5 percent of saturation at selected sites on West Fork Blue River during two 24-hour summer surveys. This high dissolved-oxygen concentration reflects small carbonaceous and nitrogenous waste loads, adequate dilution of waste by the stream, and natural reaeration. Nonpoint source waste loads accounted for an average of 53.2 percent of the total carbonaceous biochemical-oxygen demand and 90.2 percent of the nitrogenous biochemical-oxygen demand.</p><p>Waste-load assimilation was studied for both summer and annual 7-day, 10-year low flow. Natural streamflow for these conditions was zero, so no benefit from dilution was provided. The projected reaeration capacity of the stream was not sufficient to maintain at least 5 milligrams per liter dissolved oxygen in the stream with current waste-discharge restrictions. Consequently, during low flows, advanced waste treatment (nitrification-denitrification) or some other form of ammonia removal may be necessary to meet current Indiana stream water-quality standards for ammonia and dissolved oxygen. During winter low flow, ammonia toxicity, rather than dissolved-oxygen concentration, was the limiting water-quality criterion downstream from the Salem wastewater-treatment facility.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791479","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Indiana State Board of Many of these projects are continuing into the 1980's. The major programs provide basic scientific information concerning water, land, and mineral resources. The Survey also supervises the exploration for mineral fuels on leased outer continental shelf lands. The programs are: (1) Water resources investigations--These encompass (a) statewide networks of measurement stations that provide continuous records of streamflow, groundwater levels, water quality, and sediment discharge, and (b) projects to study local or regional water problems as well as critical water problems of national scope or interest. (2) Geologic and mineral resource surveys and mapping--These studies focus on geologic, mineral, and energy-resources investigations both on land and offshore. (3) Conservation of lands and mineral resources--These studies include the classification and evaluation of mineral resources on the outer continental shelf. (4) Topographic surveys and mapping--These studies include quadrangle, small-scale, and special mapping. (5) Land information and analysis--These studies focus on the interpretation and application of earth-science and related information to multi-disciplinary land-resource and environmental-impact problems. A digital model calibrated to conditions in Sand Creek was used to develop alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows. The Greensburg wastewater-treatment facility is the only point-source waste Load affecting Sand Creek in the vicinity of Greensburg. Nonpoint, unrecorded waste loads seemed to be significant during three water-quality surveys done by the Indiana State Board of Health.</p><p>Natural streamflow in Sand Creek during the summer and annual 7-day, 10-year low flow is zero, so no benefit from dilution is provided. Current (1978) ammonia-nitrogen and dissolved-oxygen concentrations of effluent from the Greensburg wastewater-treatment facility will not meet Indiana stream water-quality standards for ammonia toxicity and dissolved oxygen.</p><p>Model simulations indicate that benthic-oxygen demand, nitrification, and the dissolved-oxygen concentration of the wastewater effluent are the most significant factors affecting the in-stream dissolved-oxygen concentrations during summer low flows. The model predicts that with a benthic-oxygen demand of 1.5 grams per square meter per day at 20° Celsius the stream has no additional waste-load assimilative capacity.</p><p>The model also indicates that if the deoxygenation rate for nitrogenous biochemical-oxygen demand ranges from 0.2 to 1.0 day<sup>-1</sup> at 20° Celsius and the in-stream ammonia-nitrogen toxicity standard is not exceeded, the minimum dissolved-oxygen concentration of the stream is primarily controlled by the dissolved-oxygen concentration of the wastewater effluent and the benthic-oxygen demand. If the deoxygenation rate for nitrogenous biochemical-oxygen demand is 3.5 day<sup>-1</sup> or greater at 20° Celsius, then even with an effluent total ammonia-nitrogen concentration of 2.5 milligrams per liter the minimum 24-hour average in-stream dissolved-oxygen concentration of at least 5 milligrams per liter cannot be met during summer low flows.</p><p>Current carbonaceous biochemical-oxygen demand loads from the Greensburg wastewater-treatment facility are sufficient to maintain an average dissolved-oxygen concentration of 5 milligrams per liter, the State's water-quality standard for streams during winter low flows.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791344","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Indiana State Board of Health","usgsCitation":"Wilber, W.G., Crawford, C.G., and Peters, J.G., 1979, A one-dimensional, steady-state, dissolved-oxygen model and waste-load assimilation study for Sand Creek, Decatur County, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1344, viii, 76 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791344.","productDescription":"viii, 76 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":430616,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1344/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":150519,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1344/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","county":"Decatur County","otherGeospatial":"Sand Creek","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-85.2977,39.4534],[-85.2966,39.268],[-85.4403,39.1954],[-85.5664,39.1325],[-85.688,39.1307],[-85.6881,39.1746],[-85.6878,39.2009],[-85.6873,39.2476],[-85.6865,39.2621],[-85.6859,39.3197],[-85.6852,39.3274],[-85.6851,39.3387],[-85.6849,39.3505],[-85.6302,39.3515],[-85.6296,39.4503],[-85.6302,39.453],[-85.2977,39.4534]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Decatur\",\"state\":\"IN\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b20e4b07f02db6abaec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilber, William G. wgwilber@usgs.gov","contributorId":297,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilber","given":"William","email":"wgwilber@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":173016,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Crawford, Charles G. 0000-0003-1653-7841 cgcrawfo@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1653-7841","contributorId":1064,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crawford","given":"Charles","email":"cgcrawfo@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":173017,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Peters, James G.","contributorId":69137,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peters","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173018,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Water levels in the principal artesian aquifer underwent a long-term decline during the period 1969-78. In some areas water levels dropped more than 10 feet. Wells tapping the Clayton Limestone in the Albany area showed a long-term decline during the period 1969-78, and in some wells water levels dropped more than 20 feet. Water levels in the Cretaceous aquifer system showed little fluctuation during 1978; however, in a well located in Chattahoochee County, water levels declined 4.4 feet during 1969-78. In the Piedmont area mean water levels remained the same to 2.2 feet lower in 1978 than in 1977, and showed no long-term trend. Chloride concentrations in the principal artesian aquifer in the Savannah area remained stable and in the Brunswick area continued to rise during 1978. Daily mean water-level fluctuations and trends for 1978 and fluctuations of the monthly mean water level for the previous 10 years are shown in hydrographs of 33 selected observation wells in Georgia. Chloride concentrations in 11 wells in the Savannah and Brunswick areas are shown in graphs of monthly values over the previous 10 years. A short narrative explains fluctuations and trends in each of the hydrographs and chloride concentration graphs shown.
