Estimates were made of both instantaneous and average natural temperatures in the river during an 8-day period in August 1976. Differences between the computed average natural temperature and an independent estimate of natural temperature based on observed equilibrium temperatures were less than 0.5°C. Downstream of the powerplants, the combined thermal effects of flow regulation and powerplant effluents resulted in mean daily river temperatures about equal to or less than computed mean natural temperatures. Thus the thermal impact of heated effluents was offset by the cooling effects of structural regulation. An independent analysis of historical river- and air-temperature data, although considerably less accurate than model computations, provided substantially the same result. The range and rates of change of computed natural diurnal temperature fluctuations were considerably less than those in the river at the time of this study in 1976. The models also were used to simulate summer river temperatures using estimated year 2000 flow conditions and meteorologic data collected during 1976. Except during periods of peak water-supply demand, differences between computed year 2000 river temperatures and observed 1976 temperatures were less than 2°C.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1108","usgsCitation":"Faye, R.E., Jobson, H.E., and Land, L.F., 1979, Impact of flow regulation and powerplant The thunderstorms can cause floods of large magnitude, but of localized extent. Most streams of the lowlands are ephemeral or intermittent. \r\n\r\nStreams of the high mountain areas are much less variable. Most of their flow is from snowmelt, which results in low-intensity flood peaks with long, gradual recessions. Most large mountain streams are perennial. \r\n\r\nSmall ephemeral lakes and ponds in the low-lying areas have little effect on flood flows. Larger reservoirs in the basin have varying effects on flows of rivers, ranging from complete flow control to minor regulation. \r\n\r\nThe streams of the low-lying areas are high in dissolved solids content. Sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate are the predominant ions. The quality of the water varies during a single-flow event and season-ally. Streams in the mountains are low in dissolved solids content. \r\n\r\nRadiochemical constituents are fairly low in most of the natural streamflow, but concentrations are higher than in streams outside of the basin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791499","usgsCitation":"Busby, M.W., 1979, Surface water environment in the area of the San Juan Basin regional uranium study, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1499, v, 64 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791499.","productDescription":"v, 64 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140546,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1499/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35728,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1499/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afbe4b07f02db6961c5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Busby, Mark William","contributorId":67088,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Busby","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"William","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157185,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor. The results of the study indicated that the chemical and physical properties and range of concentrations of several dissolved constituents in both estuaries varied during a tide cycle primarily as the result of the interaction of freshwater and wastewater inflow with the saline Gulf waters.

The water quality condition of both estuaries generally was good and the low 5-day biochemical oxygen demand in the estuaries indicated that excessive oxygen demand was not exerted during the study. The 5-day biochemical oxygen demand generally was less than 3.5 milligrams per liter. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations decreased with depths and the lowest concentrations occurred below 30-foot depths in Bayou Casotte. Oxygen levels at shallow depths generally were less in Bayou Chico than in Bayou Casotte. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations in Bayou Casotte ranged from 0.7 to 7.7 milligrams per liter at high tide and from 2.5 to 8.2 milligrams per liter at low tide. In general, phosphorus and nitrogen species were present in comparatively high concentrations in both estuaries; were higher at low tide that at high tide; and were highest in Bayou Casotte upstream of Bayou Casotte harbor. Concentrations of the nitrogen species during a tide cycle generally were lower at the mouth of Bayou Casotte than at the mouth of Bayou Chico. Fecal bacteria at most sampling sites were generally in concentrations indicative of recent manmade pollution.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791059","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Mississippi Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Pollution Control","usgsCitation":"Bednar, G.A., 1979, Quality of water in Bayou Casotte and Bayou Chico, Jackson County, Mississippi: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1059, iv, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791059.","productDescription":"iv, 36 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414722,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1059/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141451,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1059/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Mississippi","county":"Jackson County","otherGeospatial":"Bayou Casotte, Bayou Chico","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.75623234239562,\n              30.555015882418573\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.75623234239562,\n              30.294608991689415\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.3965856045771,\n              30.294608991689415\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.3965856045771,\n              30.555015882418573\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.75623234239562,\n              30.555015882418573\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8be4b07f02db6516d2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bednar, Gene A.","contributorId":81881,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bednar","given":"Gene","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156740,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Phytoplankton concentrations in cells per milliliter (cells/mL) were generally higher downstream from Atlanta than upstream. The highest concentrations, mostly blue-green algae, occurred in West Point Lake with an average of 90,000 cells/mL for the sampling period. The lowest concentrations, 1,000 cells/mL, occurred upstream of Lake Sidney Lanier. Dissolved orthophosphate and nitrite plus nitrate concentrations were highest in the river reaches and upper reaches of the two lakes and were lowest at the dam pools of both lakes. The high nitrite plus nitrate concentrations downstream from Atlanta were primarily a result of nitrification by Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria. Algal growth potential was highest downstream from Atlanta, 25 milligrams per liter (mg/L) at Whitesburg, and was the lowest in the headwaters and at the dam pools of Lake Sidney Lanier and West Point Lake. The rate of nitrification in the Atlanta to Franklin reach of the river was comparatively low, 0.02 mg/L per hour. Nitrification was an important cause of dissolved-oxygen consumption in a 45-mi reach of the river downstream from the Atlanta wastewater treatment facilities. Dissolved-oxygen consumption as a result of nitrification may be greatest during low flow. Eighty-three stream sites were selected for sampling in Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Pitkin, Routt, and Summit Counties. Also included are data from 28 sites in Routt County collected for a U.S. Geological Survey cooperative study on the Yampa River basin. A summary of data collected prior to this study, results of current chemical and biological sampling, and needs for future water-quality monitoring are reported for each county.

The kinds of data collected were site specific depending upon land-use activities. Data collected at selected sites included temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and stream discharge. Chemical data collected included nutrients, inorganics, organics, and trace elements. Biological data collected included counts and species composition of total and fecal-coliform bacteria, fecal-streptococcus bacteria, benthic invertebrates, and phytoplankton. Most of the sites were sampled three times: in April-June 1976, August 1976, and January 1977.

The major water-quality problems at the 17 sites sampled in Eagle County are related to mining, recreation, and geology. The Eagle River and Cross Creek in the vicinity of Minturn have concentrations of trace elements that exceed water-quality standards. Gore Creek is influenced by winter recreational use and the water during the winter has total bacteria counts as great as 72,000 per 100 milliliters and concentrations of un-ionized ammonia greater than 0.02 milligrams per liter downstream from the sewage-treatment plant. Mineralized water in the downstream reaches of the Eagle River results from natural chemical processes. Millions of acre-feet of water is pumped from the system annually to support a large and expanding agribusiness industry. Since the 1950's, water levels have been steadily declining in many areas of the valley and concern has been expressed about the ability of the entire ground-water system to support agribusiness at current levels, not to mention its ability to function at projected expansion levels. At current levels of ground-water use, an estimated 1.5 to 2 million acre-feet is withdrawn from storage each year; that is, 1.5 to 2 million acre-feet of water is pumped annually in excess of annual replenishment. The U.S. Geological Survey has initiated a 4-year study to develop geologic, hydrologic, and hydraulic information and to establish a valleywide ground-water data base that will be used to build computer models of the ground-water flow system. Subsequently, these models may be used to evaluate the system response to various ground-water management alternatives. This report describes current problems, objectives of the study, and outlines the general work to be accomplished in the study area. A bibliography of about 600 references is included. The water surface elevation reached 17.46 feet (5.32 m) above national geodetic vertical datum of 1929 (NGVD), approximately 10.5 feet (3.2 m) above the predicted astronomical tide at Bangor. The unusually high water resulted from a tidal storm surge caused by prolonged strong, south-southeasterly winds which occurred near the time of astronomical high tide. Winds exceeded 64 knots off the New England coast. The resulting flood was the third highest since 1846 and is the first documented tidal flood at Bangor. This report documents the meteorological and hydrologic conditions associated with the flooding and also contains a brief description of storm damage from Eastport to Brunswick, Maine. Over 120 samples, 75 of which are from Known Geothermal Resource Areas, were used in the assessment. Data required for calculation of the sulfate geothermometer temperatures, along with Na-K-Ca, quartz, and chalcedony geothermometer temperatures for comparison, are listed in table 1. For greater accuracy data from new or better samples have occasionally supplemented or replaced data used in the 1978 assessment. The locations of 52 shallow test wells augered during the study are shown on a map at a scale of 1:48,000. Periodic water-level measurements and water-quality analyses for the test holes are listed in tables. Water temperature, specific conductance, and nitrate concentration are given for water samples collected from 98 domestic wells, and chemical analyses are included for 11 domestic and irrigation wells. In addition, water-level drawdown and recovery data are plotted on graphs for five pumped wells and three observation wells. The shallow-water region is discussed in detail by Marlow and others (1979a) in a companion report. The triangular deep-water region lies at the junction of the Bering shelf and the Aleutian Ridge (Fig. 2). This region is bounded on the northeast by the 200 m bathymetric contour that defines the edge of the Bering shelf, on the southeast by a meandering line that lies 3 miles north of the Aleutian Islands, and on the west by the 171°W longitude meridian. Hereafter, this triangular region is referred to as the Umnak Plateau region.
