Given upstream and downstream boundary conditions and channel geometry data, roughness coefficients, stage, and discharge can be calculated anywhere within the reach as a function of time.</p><p>The program uses a linear implicit finite-difference technique that discritizes the partial differential equations. Then it arranges the coefficients of the continuity and momentum equations into a. pentadiagonal matrix for solution. Because it is a reasonable compromise between computational accuracy, speed and ease of use, the technique is one of the most commonly used.</p><p>The upstream boundary condition is a depth hydrograph. However, options also allow the boundary condition to be discharge or water-surface elevation. The downstream boundary condition is a depth which may be constant, self-setting, or unsteady. The reach may be divided into uneven increments and the cross sections may be nonprismatic and may vary from one to the other. Tributary and lateral inflow may enter the reach.</p><p>The digital model will simulate such common problems as (1) flood waves, (2) releases from dams, and (3) channels where storage is a consideration. All of these areas affect the water quality of the lakes through storm runoff and transport of windborne material. During a study from April 1971 to June 1974, stages of Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity declined 1.5, 1.4, and 3.0 ft, respectively, because the rainfall was 3.78 in. below average for the area. Inflow to the lakes during this 3-year period was approximately 1,966 acre-ft of which 84 percent was by rainfall and 16 percent was by storm runoff. Rainfall and runoff brought in 82 tons of dissolved solids of which storm runoff carried 51 tons and bulk precipitation carried 32 tons. Dissolved solids concentrations in the lakes were relatively low, averaging 91, 132, and 212 mg/liter for Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity, respecetively. Major ions, trace elements and nutrients were present in the lakes in relatively low concentrations. Phytoplankton and coliform population showed sharp seasonal fluctuations with the maximum population generally occurring during the warmer months. Blue-green algae predominated in all three lakes. Heavy mineral analyses established three sediment sources: (1) the&nbsp;five major rivers draining the volcanic and associated sedimentary rocks of&nbsp;the Coast Range, (2) small streams draining the sedimentary uplands that&nbsp;form the shoreline adjacent to Tillamook Bay and erosion of the shoreline&nbsp;by waves and currents, and (3) marine sediments carried to Tillamook&nbsp;Bay by longshore drift from drainage basins north or south of the bay.&nbsp;Stratigraphic and radiocarbon analyses show that the Holocene fill in&nbsp;Tillamook Bay began to accumulate sometime before about 9,000 years ago&nbsp;in deep parts of prefill river valleys. The rate of accumulation&nbsp;generally coincided with the rate of world-wide sea-level rise--faster<br />(greater than about 3 meters per 1,000 years) up to about 7,000 years&nbsp;ago and slower (less than about 2 meters per 1,000 years) since that&nbsp;time. The vertical rate of accumulation at one core site seems to have&nbsp;been about the same from 3,300 years B.P. Water-quality data during 1974 and 1975 and parts of 1976 for 129 ground-water sites and 119 surface-water sites are tabulated. For most samples, major cations, anions, and trace metals were analyzed. For the same time period, field measurements of specific conductance, temperature, and pH were made on 252 springs and wells. These samplings sites, as well as the locations of 20 climatological stations, 18 snow-course sites, and 43 surface-water gaging stations, are shown on maps. Geologic units that contain coal deposits or supply much of the water used for stock and domestic purposes in the area also are shown on a map. The oil-shale zone, which is to be penetrated by a shaft, is overlain by 1,400 feet of sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstone and marlstone, consisting of two aquifers separated by a confining layer. Three test holes were drilled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to obtain samples of the oil shale, and to test the hydraulic properties of the two aquifers. The data collected during construction of the test holes were used to update an existing ground-water-flow computer model. The model was used to estimate the maximum amount of water that would have to be pumped to dewater the shaft during its construction. It is estimated that it would be necessary to pump as much as 3,080 gallons per minute to keep the shaft dry. Disposal of waste water and rock are the principal hydrologic problems associated with constructing the shaft. The contours represent the elevation of the top of the Floridan aquifer to mean sea level. Rock units recognized to be part of the Floridan aquifer are limestone and dolomite ranging from middle Eocene to early Miocene. They are Lake City Limestone, Avon Park Limestone, Ocala Limestone, Suwannee Limestone, and Tampa Limestone. In this report, the top of the Floridan aquifer is a limestone defined as the first consistent rock of early Miocene age or older below which occur no clay confining beds. Although the Hawthorn formation of middle Miocene is considered part of the Floridan aquifer when it is in direct hydrologic contact with lower lying rock units, it is not considered here because of a lack of detailed delineation of areas where contact exists. Each estimate was tested in a computer model of groundwater flow to see which estimate was best. Calculations of flow medway between the 24- and 21-meter potentiometric contours show a total flow of 164,000 cubic meters per day, a significant part ofm which must be recharged within the closed 24-meter controur. Flow midway between the 18- and 15-meter contours was calculated to be 342,000 cubic meters per day. A water budget for the same area in water year 1972 indicates a potential recharge rate of 2,570,000 cubic meters per day. Digital modeling of ground-water flow in northeast Florida shows that the recharge rate calculated by closed contour is insufficient to balance the natural discharge of the regional ground-water system, whereas the rate calculated from water budgets is too great. Therefore, the best way to simulate the recharge mechanism of the northeast Florida flow model may be with a constant head boundary, rather than with constant flux. Harmonic analyses were made of thermograph records 5 to 14 years in length from 82 stations. More than 80 percent of the annual variation in water temperature is explained by the harmonic function for 77 of the 82 stations. Harmonic coefficients based on 8 years of thermograph record at 12 stations varied only slightly from coefficients computed using two equally split 4-year records. At five stations where both thermograph and periodic (10 to 23 measurements per year) data were collected concurrently, harmonic coefficients for periodic data were defined nearly as well as those for thermograph data.
