A wide range of hydrologic data has been collected in the basin since the spring of 1964. These data include rainfall, stream discharge, sediment concentrations, chemical quality of water, and ground-water altitudes.</p><p>The data collection system consists of 7 recording streamflow stations, 5 recording rainfall stations, 51 non-recording rainfall stations, and 31 groundwater observation wells. Sediment and chemical quality of water samples were collected intermittently at selected sites.</p><p>A synopsis of the time and space distribution of rainfall and peak flow are provided in graphic and tabular form for selected events of rainfall and peak flow. Representative data concerning the chemical quality of water and the fluvial sediment also are included. Stream discharge, which was measured along this reach every 16 to 24 kilometers, ranged from 9.4 to 10.6 cubic meters per second. Variations in streamflow were explained, in part, by underflow, loss to ground water, and evaporation. Specific conductance was measured about every 2 kilometers and indicated a downstream increase on the order of 11 to 12 percent for the reach. Except for mercury, bottom-sediment trace-element concentrations in the study reach were less than maximum concentrations determined during August-September 1976 for bottom sediments at unperturbed sites upstream in the Yampa River basin. These stations, mostly north of Fairbanks, add to the historical network of gaging stations and provide records of hydrologic conditions along the TAPS route. Selected data from 23 gaging stations along the TAPS route for the period 1970-74 (prior to construction of the pipeline) are compiled in graphic form. The data include annual hydrographs of daily mean or instantaneous values of a standard set of parameters which are indicative of physical, chemical and biological conditions of the streams. The hydrographs facilitate comparisons of data, both in time and between stream sites. Thus, they are a tool for evaluating streamflow characteristics along the TAPS route during the preconstruction period. The initial network consisted of 18 stations, which were expanded to 20 in 1971, and to 30 in 1973 (Reed and others, 1971, 1972, Quinones, 1975).</p><p>In 1974, at the request of the Environmental Quality Board of Puerto Rico, the network was modified to conform with the Environmental Protection Agency National Water Quality Surveillance System. Under the revised concept, monitoring stations were established at sites near the headwaters and mouths of the principal rivers in Puerto Rico. Most of the stations in the p-evious network were located at sites downstream in the valleys in order that the overall water-quality conditions in the principal rivers could be monitored. The purpose of the present network is to monitor changes in water quality between the upstream and downstream stations. The expanded network consisted of 58 stations. During 1976, five had been discontinued. One other was added late in 1976. Progress reports have been published in 1976 (Quinones and others) and 1977 (Quinones and others). Most of the stations in the original network have been maintained, thus providing sore degree of continuity. The monitoring stations used in this report are shown in figure 1 and listed in table 2.</p><p>This report summarizes the results of the network operation from July 1976 to August This ground-water reservoir is composed of an upper aquifer and an underlying sandstone aquifer. High-capacity water-supply wells pump from the sandstone aquifer.</p>\n<p>Pumping from the sandstone aquifer has resulted in hydrologic changes. The water level has dropped in both the upper aquifer and underlying sandstone aquifer, and the flow of water in streams has been reduced.</p>\n<p>The effects of anticipated pumping were examined with the use of a digital model. The maximum water-level decline from the beginning of pumping in 1882 until 1975 was about 75 feet in the sandstone aquifer and 10 to 20 feet in the upper aquifer. Additional declines between 1975 and 2000 were computed to be 10 to 30 feet in the sandstone aquifer and 5 to 10 feet in the upper aquifer. The average annual streamflow of the Yahara River at the McFarland gaging station was reduced 32 percent from the beginning of pumping to 1975. The first schemes investigated combine finite-element spatial discretization with split-step time stepping schemes that have been found useful in finite-difference computations. Because of the large number of numerical integrations performed in space and the large sparse matrices solved, these finite-element schemes were found to be economically uncompetitive with finite-difference schemes. A very promising leapfrog scheme is proposed which, when combined with a novel very fast spatial integration procedure, eliminates the need to solve any matrices at all. Additional problems attacked included proper propagation of waves and proper specification of the normal-flow boundary condition. This report indicates work in progress and does not come to a definitive conclusion as to the best approach for finite-element modeling of surface-water problems. On the basis of synoptic in situ measurements of light transmissivity and suspended-sediment concentrations at six monitoring stations, a time sequence of six turbidity structures was established along the longitudinal trend of the bay and its tidal inlet over a 16-month observation period. The bay turbidity structures were observed to be highly variable in time and space. Structures ranged from a vertically homogeneous water column, to a well-stratified column exhibiting an increasing turbidity gradient with depth. Wind appeared to be the dominant forcing agent influencing turbidity toward the bayhead sector, where it both generates waves for bottom-sediment resuspension and regulates fluvial sediment influx from the Nueces River. Turbidity toward the baymouth sector appeared to be dominantly regulated by tidal forcing effects from Aransas Pass inlet. Water-surface profiles were developed for 50-year, 100-year, and September 26, 1975 flood discharges at Camillus for four different channel conditions: (1) with four culverts at Camillus bypass and a bridge at County Road 36 (present conditions); (2) with only the culverts removed; (3) with only County Road 36 bridge removed; and (4) with the culverts and County Road 36 bridge removed (preconstruction conditions) The 50- and 100-year flood discharges at the Camillus gaging station were determined to be 4,700 and 5,500 cubic feet per second, respectively, and the September 1975 flood discharge was measured to be 2,120 cubic feet per second. If the four culverts are removed, peak water-surface elevations at the gaging station in Camillus during the 50- and 100-year flood would be decreased by 0.7 and 0.3 foot, respectively, relative to those calculated for present conditions. If only County Road 36 bridge is removed, water-surface elevations during the 50- and 100-year flood would be decreased by 0.2 and 0.3 foot, respectively. If both structures are removed, water-surface elevations during the 50- and 10--year floods would be decreased y 0.8 and 0.6 foot, respectively. All of these areas affect the water quality of the lakes through storm runoff and transport of windborne material. During a study from April 1971 to June 1974, stages of Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity declined 1.5, 1.4, and 3.0 ft, respectively, because the rainfall was 3.78 in. below average for the area. Inflow to the lakes during this 3-year period was approximately 1,966 acre-ft of which 84 percent was by rainfall and 16 percent was by storm runoff. Rainfall and runoff brought in 82 tons of dissolved solids of which storm runoff carried 51 tons and bulk precipitation carried 32 tons. Dissolved solids concentrations in the lakes were relatively low, averaging 91, 132, and 212 mg/liter for Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity, respecetively. Major ions, trace elements and nutrients were present in the lakes in relatively low concentrations. Phytoplankton and coliform population showed sharp seasonal fluctuations with the maximum population generally occurring during the warmer months. Blue-green algae predominated in all three lakes. Survey open-file report), in which the hydraulic effects of two alternative highway plans during a large-magnitude flood were evaluated, a hydraulic analysis was made for a third highway plan. The two plans evaluated in the original report had been found by the State Department of Transportation to be infeasible. A design-flood discharge of 18,200 cubic feet per second was used in the new evaluation, as in the original report. The recurrence interval of that flood is approximately 100 years. The corresponding peak flood stage at the proposed bridge site was determined by the New York State Department of Transportation to be 411.8 feet.</p><p>During the design flood, the new proposed alternative would cause a 0.1-foot increase in water-surface elevation from the bridge to the approach section; 1,300 cubic feet per second would overflow the road north of the bridge and 6,800 cubic feet per second south of it. Twenty-eight wells, 1.25 inch in diameter, were driven to selected depths in 11 of the 12 trenches to obtain gas and water samples for chemical and radiochemical analysis, water-level measurements for evaluation of trench-cover permeability. Gas from unsaturated refuse above the trench water level was detected in nearly all wells. Rapid water-level response in most wells to pumping of water from trench sumps 20 to 275 feet distant showed the refuse to be highly permeable. Described in detail are the methods and equipment used to (1) install the wells, (2) collect gas and water samples, and (3) monitor radiation and methane concentrations while driving wells into trenches. A record of each well driven into the burial trenches is included. Lineaments and alignments","docAbstract":"The first stages of a remote-sensing project on the Paradox basin, part of the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) radioactive waste-emplacement program, consisted of a review and selection of the best available satellite scanner images to use in geomorphologic and tectonic investigations of the region. High-quality Landsat images in several spectral bands (E-2260-17124 and E-5165-17030), taken under low sun angle October 9 and 10, 1975, were processed via computer for planimetric rectification, histogram analysis, linear transformation of radiance values, and edge enhancement. A lineament map of the northern Paradox basin was subsequently compiled at 1:400,000 using the enhanced Landsat base. Numerous previously unmapped northeast-trending lineaments between the Green River and Yellowcat dome; confirmatory detail on the structural control of major segments of the Colorado, Gunnison, and Dolores Rivers; and new evidence for late Phanerozoic reactivation of Precambrian basement structures are among the new contributions to the tectonics of the region. Lineament trends appear to be compatible with the postulated Colorado lineament zone, with geophysical potential-field anomalies, and with a northeast-trending basement fault pattern. Combined Landsat, geologic, and geophysical field evidence for this interpretation includes the sinuousity of the composite Salt Valley anticline, the transection of the Moab-Spanish Valley anticline on its southeastern end by northeast-striking faults, and possible transection (?) of the Moab diapir. Similarly, northeast-trending lineaments in Cottonwood Canyon and elsewhere are interpreted as manifestations of structures associated with northeasterly trends in the magnetic and gravity fields of the La Sal Mountains region. Other long northwesterly lineaments near the western termination of the Ryan Creek fault zone. may be associated with the fault zone separating the Uncompahgre horst uplift from the Paradox basin. \r\n\r\nImplications of the present investigation for a potential radioactive waste-emplacement site in Salt Valley include confirmation of lack of permanent surface drainage and absence of agricultural or other development in the area of northern Salt Valley. On the other hand, the existence of diapirism, salt-karst landforms, and extensive lineamentation of the northern Paradox basin suggest regional tectonic instability at least in the geologic past. Future reactivation of diapiric or other halokinetic processes, including lateral flow, would lead to plastic behavior of the halite that might cause emplaced waste containers to migrate within the diapir. At Salt Valley, existing diapiric boundary faults and intersecting joint sets in sandstone units on the anticlinal flanks could, if the hydraulic gradient is suitable, provide conduits to the halite core for circulating ground water from adjacent Mesozoic sandstones in synclinal areas between the salt diapirs. Moreover, the loci of major lineament intersections might be areas of somewhat elevated seismic risk. These 664 were selected from a network of about 2,100 observation wells for which water-level measurements are in the files of the Geological Survey.</p><p>Hydrographs of 60 wells show that the downward trends of groundwater levels continued in areas of heavy pumping and in some areas not affected by pumping. In west-central Polk County, the most notable area of pumping, levels in the Floridan and other aquifers declined to new record lows in 1975 but recovered 3 to 6 feet in 1976. In north Florida where fluctuations of ground-water levels are primarily influenced by changes in stage of the Suwannee River, levels declined 18 and 23 feet in Suwannee and Hamilton Counties. In northwest Florida, declines in level in the sand-and-gravel aquifer ranged from less than 1 foot to 2 feet. In Nassau County, in Northern Brevard County, and at Stuart in Martin County--in the northeastern, eastern, and southwestern coastal parts of the State--levels declined to new record lows
