These areas were delineated for Blue Spring, Silver Springs, Alexander Springs, and Silver Glen Springs in north-central Florida using four regional ground-water flow models and particle tracking. As expected, different models predicted different areas contributing recharge. In general, the differences were due to different hydrologic stresses, subsurface permeability properties, and boundary conditions that were used to calibrate each model, all of which are considered to be equally feasible because each model matched its respective calibration data reasonably well. To evaluate the agreement of the models and to summarize results, areas contributing recharge to springs from each model were combined into composite areas. During 1993-98, the composite areas contributing recharge to Blue Spring, Silver Springs, Alexander Springs, and Silver Glen Springs were about 130, 730, 110, and 120 square miles, respectively. The composite areas for all springs remained about the same when using projected 2020 ground-water withdrawals.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03448","usgsCitation":"Shoemaker, W., O’Reilly, A.M., Sepulveda, N., Williams, S.A., Motz, L.H., and Sun, Q., 2004, Comparison of Estimated Areas Contributing Recharge to Selected Springs in North-Central Florida by Using Multiple Ground-Water Flow Models: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-448, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03448.","productDescription":"31 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":5429,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://fl.water.usgs.gov/Abstracts/ofr03_448_shoemaker.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":174181,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6aeca9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shoemaker, W. Physical aquatic habitat - depth, velocity, and substrate - was mapped in 15 sites in Augsust and October of 2002.  Habitat assessments were compared with fish locations using radio telemetry.  Results indicate that pallid sturgeon preferentially use locations in the Fort Randall segment deeper than the average available habitat, with prominent usage peaks aat 3.5-4.0 m and 6-6.5 m, compared to the modal availability at 3-3.5 m. The fish use habitats with a modal velocity of 80 cm/s; the used velocities appear to be in proportion to their availability.  Fish located preferentially over sand substrate and seemed to avoid mud and submerged vegetation.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20041060","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Elliott, C.M., Jacobson, R.B., and DeLonay, A.J., 2004, Physical aquatic habitat assessment, Fort Randall segment of the Missouri River, Nebraska and South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2004-1060, Report: vi, 34 p.; Appendix of Maps: 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20041060.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 34 p.; Appendix of Maps: 46 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":181369,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":8436,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://infolink.cr.usgs.gov/RSB/USGS_OFR_2004-1060/USGS_OFR2004-1060.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":7900,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":14,"text":"Image"},"url":"https://infolink.cr.usgs.gov/RSB/USGS_OFR_2004-1060/USGS_OFR2004-1060-appendix.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":5641,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://infolink.cr.usgs.gov/RSB/USGS_OFR_2004-1060/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685ce9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Elliott, Caroline M. 0000-0002-9190-7462 celliott@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9190-7462","contributorId":2380,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Elliott","given":"Caroline","email":"celliott@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":253989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jacobson, Robert B. 0000-0002-8368-2064 rjacobson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8368-2064","contributorId":1289,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jacobson","given":"Robert","email":"rjacobson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":253988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"DeLonay, Aaron J.","contributorId":53360,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"DeLonay","given":"Aaron","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":253990,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The CVI ranks the following in terms of their physical contribution to sea-level rise-related coastal change: geomorphology, regional coastal slope, rate of relative sea-level rise, shoreline change rates, mean tidal range and mean wave height. The rankings for each variable were combined and an index value calculated for 1-minute grid cells covering the park. The CVI highlights those regions where the physical effects of sea-level rise might be the greatest. This approach combines the coastal system's susceptibility to change with its natural ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions, yielding a quantitative, although relative, measure of the park's natural vulnerability to the effects of sea-level rise. CACO consists of high glacial cliffs, beaches, sand spits, and salt marsh wetlands. The areas most vulnerable to sea-level rise are those with the lowest regional coastal slopes, geomorphologic types that are susceptible to inundation, and the highest rates of shoreline change. Most of CACO's infrastructure lies on high elevation uplands away from the shore; most high use areas are accessible by foot only. The CVI provides an objective technique for evaluation and long-term planning by scientists and park managers.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr02233","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park Service","usgsCitation":"Hammar-Klose, E.S., Pendleton, E., Thieler, E.R., and Williams, S.J., 2003, Coastal vulnerability assessment of Cape Cod National Seashore to sea-level rise: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-233, v, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02233.","productDescription":"v, 18 p.","numberOfPages":"18","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":5953,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/of02-233","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":182761,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/of02-233/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":384633,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/of02-233/ofr02233.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.36 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 02-233"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Cape Cod","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -70.7574462890625,\n 41.45507852101139\n ],\n [\n -69.8126220703125,\n 41.45507852101139\n ],\n [\n -69.8126220703125,\n 42.18986405028881\n ],\n [\n -70.7574462890625,\n 42.18986405028881\n ],\n [\n -70.7574462890625,\n 41.45507852101139\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Director, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
384 Woods Hole Road
Woods Hole, MA 02543
","tableOfContents":"

Abstract

Introduction

Data Ranking

Coastal Geology of Cape Cod National Seashore

Methodology

Geologic Variables

Physical Process Variables

Coastal Vulnerabilty Index

Results

Discussion

Conclusions

References

","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b26e4b07f02db6b0516","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hammar-Klose, Erika S.","contributorId":77137,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hammar-Klose","given":"Erika","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258141,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pendleton, Elizabeth A.","contributorId":101312,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pendleton","given":"Elizabeth A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258142,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Thieler, E. The database was developed as a contribution to the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program's National Geologic Map Database, and is intended to provide a general geologic setting of the Yucaipa quadrangle. The database and map provide information about earth materials and geologic structures, including faults and folds that have developed in the quadrangle due to complexities in the San Andreas Fault system.

The Yucaipa 7.5' quadrangle contains materials and structures that provide unique insight into the Mesozoic and Cenozoic geologic evolution of southern California. Stratigraphic and structural elements include: (1) strands of the San Andreas Fault that bound far-traveled terranes of crystalline and sedimentary rock; (2) Mesozoic crystalline rocks that form lower and upper plates of the regionwide Vincent-Orocopia Thrust system; and (3) late Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary materials and geologic structures that formed during the last million years or so and that record complex geologic interactions within the San Andreas Fault system. These materials and the structures that deform them provide the geologic framework for investigations of geologic hazards and ground-water recharge and subsurface flow.

Geologic information contained in the Yucaipa database is general-purpose data that is applicable to land-related investigations in the earth and biological sciences. The term \"generalpurpose\" means that all geologic-feature classes have minimal information content adequate to characterize their general geologic characteristics and to interpret their general geologic history. However, no single feature class has enough information to definitively characterize its properties and origin. For this reason the database cannot be used for site-specific geologic evaluations, although it can be used to plan and guide investigations at the site-specific level.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03301","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, U.S. Forest Service (San Bernardino National Forest), and California Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Matti, Jonathan C., Morton, D. The method is based on the application of tasseled cap transformation coefficients derived by the EROS Data Center for Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Data, and is used in conjunction with ERDAS Imagine software. Shoreline data obtained using this method are cost effective compared with conventional mapping methods for State, regional, and national coastline applications. The architectures of many parallel computers and/or their network topologies are based on these investigations. Often, benchmarks resulting from these investigations are compiled with little regard to how a large dataset would move about in these systems. This part of the Beowulf study addresses that concern by looking at specific applications software and system-level modifications. Applications include an implementation of a smoothing filter for time-series data, a parallel implementation of the decision tree algorithm used in the Landcover Characterization project, a parallel Kriging algorithm used to fit point data collected in the field on invasive species to a regular grid, and modifications to the Beowulf project's resampling algorithm to handle larger, higher resolution datasets at a national scale. Systems-level investigations include a feasibility study on Flat Neighborhood Networks and modifications of that concept with Parallel File Systems.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003216","usgsCitation":"Steinwand, D.R., Maddox, B., Beckmann, T., and Schmidt, G., 2003, Processing large remote sensing image data sets on Beowulf clusters: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-216, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003216.","productDescription":"27 p.","numberOfPages":"27","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":294,"text":"Geography","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":338483,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0216/OFR03-216.pdf"},{"id":8213,"rank":300,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0216/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":194383,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db69812a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steinwand, Daniel R. steinwand@usgs.gov","contributorId":3224,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steinwand","given":"Daniel","email":"steinwand@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":288092,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Maddox, Brian","contributorId":54637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maddox","given":"Brian","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288094,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Beckmann, Tim 0000-0002-2557-0638","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2557-0638","contributorId":87995,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beckmann","given":"Tim","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288095,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Schmidt, Gail 0000-0002-9684-8158","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9684-8158","contributorId":29086,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Gail","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":288093,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Present day analogues to these vegetation zones can be found in the forests and forest transitions extending from central Georgia (approximately 32° N latitude) to central Ontario, Labrador, and northern Newfoundland (approximately 52-55° N latitude). It is still undetermined (on the basis of our pollen evidence) whether it was ever cold enough in the study area during this 45,000-year time interval to develop alpine tundra extensively along these ridge tops.

Current evidence from the study area suggests that the forests in and around Shenandoah National Park changed frequently in composition through the studied time interval. Most of the forests previously established in the study area were of types that favored notably cooler mean annual temperatures than the forest type that is established currently in the proximity of the Park. Although this fossil record is a partial one, the radiometric carbon evidence verifies that we now have discovered pollen assemblages of full-glacial age (last glacial maximum) in the Blue Ridge, of multiple forest types.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr20041351","usgsCitation":"Litwin, R.J., Morgan, B., Eaton, L., and Wieczorek, G.F., 2003, The workshop was designed to address broad issues of knowledge and communication, and to help develop the mission, vision, and goals of the National Knowledge Bank called for in the 1999 NRC review of the CMGP.\r\n\r\nPresentations led by historians and philosophers yield to a wide-ranging review and discussion of the role of USGS science in society: USGS science is important to government to understand certain complicated public policy issues (such as the environment), but we must participate in two-way public dialogs to increase our relevance and usefulness. Presentations led by USGS communications experts reviewed the principles of audience analysis and effective communications: this focused look at audiences, markets, and products provided an introduction to the behaviors, the tools, and the terminology that might be applied to public discourse. Presentations by several information technology experts showed the potential - and pitfalls - of current schemes for Web-based information access. Finally, several brainstorming sessions developed action items, vision, and characteristics of a knowledge bank.\r\n\r\nBased on the workshop discussions and results, the authors developed the National Knowledge Bank Mission, Vision, and Goals statements.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03240","usgsCitation":"Hutchinson, D.R., Sanders, R., and Faust, T., 2003, Making USGS information effective in the electronic age (Online only): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-240, 124 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03240.","productDescription":"124 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":193126,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6927,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/of03-240/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Online only","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db649f34","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hutchinson, Debbie R.","contributorId":39881,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hutchinson","given":"Debbie","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sanders, Rex rsanders@usgs.gov","contributorId":4497,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sanders","given":"Rex","email":"rsanders@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":282607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Faust, T.","contributorId":54690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Faust","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Usually a Beowulf cluster is designed to accomplish a specific set of processing goals, and processing is very efficient when the problem remains inside the constraints of the original design. There are cases, however, when one might wish to compute a problem that is beyond the capacity of the local Beowulf system. In these cases, spreading the problem to multiple clusters or to other machines on the network may provide a cost-effective solution.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003208","usgsCitation":"Steinwand, D.R., Maddox, B., Beckmann, T., and Hamer, G., 2003, Extending Beowulf Clusters: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-208, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003208.","productDescription":"18 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":185675,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9349,"rank":300,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0208/","size":"191","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":338482,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0208/OFR03-208.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8b67","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steinwand, Daniel R. steinwand@usgs.gov","contributorId":3224,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steinwand","given":"Daniel","email":"steinwand@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":282391,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Maddox, Brian","contributorId":54637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maddox","given":"Brian","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282392,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Beckmann, Tim 0000-0002-2557-0638","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2557-0638","contributorId":87995,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beckmann","given":"Tim","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282394,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hamer, George","contributorId":64730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hamer","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282393,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Geological systems consist of a multiplicity of linked components with nested feedback loops; the dynamics of these systems are non-linear, iterative, multi-scale, and operate far from equilibrium. That notwithstanding, It appears that, with the exception of papers on seismic studies, geology and geophysics work has been disproportionally underrepresented at regional and national meetings on complex systems relative to papers in the life sciences. This is somewhat puzzling because geologists and geophysicists are, in many ways, preadapted to thinking of complex system mechanisms. Geologists and geophysicists think about processes involving large volumes of rock below the sunlit surface of Earth, the accumulated consequence of processes extending hundreds of millions of years in the past. Not only do geologists think in the abstract by virtue of the vast time spans, most of the evidence is out-of-sight.
\n
\n
A primary goal of this workshop is to begin to bridge the gap between the Earth sciences and life sciences through demonstration of the universality of complex systems science, both philosophically and in model structures.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03364","usgsCitation":"Mossotti, V.G., Barragan, J., and Westergard, T.D., 2003, Cx-02 Program, workshop on modeling complex systems (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-364, Readme; Report: 52 p.; Participants: DBF, CSV, FP5; Shape files, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03364.","productDescription":"Readme; Report: 52 p.; Participants: DBF, CSV, FP5; Shape files","numberOfPages":"53","temporalStart":"2002-11-19","temporalEnd":"2002-11-21","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":174049,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr03364.jpg"},{"id":285805,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Cx-02_participants/Cx-02_participants.fp5"},{"id":285804,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Cx-02_participants/Cx-02_participants.csv"},{"id":285803,"rank":4,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Cx-02_participants/Cx-02_participants.dbf"},{"id":285808,"rank":5,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Shape_files_Cx-02_Participants/Shape_files_Cx-02_Participants.zip"},{"id":285802,"rank":6,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/pdf/OF03-364.pdf"},{"id":285801,"rank":7,"type":{"id":20,"text":"Read Me"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/1_README.TXT"},{"id":4881,"rank":8,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67ebea","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mossotti, Victor G. mossotti@usgs.gov","contributorId":3494,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mossotti","given":"Victor","email":"mossotti@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":246987,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barragan, Jo Ann","contributorId":97816,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barragan","given":"Jo Ann","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":246989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Westergard, Todd D.","contributorId":92970,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Westergard","given":"Todd","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":246988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This report depicts the principal geographic features of the study area; locations of domestic, commercial, and municipal wells from which data were obtained to construct water-table and saturated-thickness maps and five geohydrologic sections; surficial geology; water-table altitude; generalized saturated thickness of the unconfined (water-table) aquifer; generalized thickness of the discontinuous series of confined aquifers; and five geohydrologic sections, all of which are in the northern part of the study area.

The unconsolidated material in the Chenango River valley consists primarily of three types of deposits: (1) glaciofluvial material consisting of stratified coarse-grained sediment (sand and gravel) that was deposited by meltwater streams flowing above, below, or next to a glacier; (2) glaciolacustrine material consisting of stratified fine-grained sediment (very fine sand, silt, and clay) that was deposited in lakes that formed at the front of a glacier; and (3) recent alluvial material consisting of stratified fine-to-medium grained sediment (fine-to-medium sand and silt) that was deposited on flood plains.

The water-table map was compiled from water-level data obtained from wells completed in the unconfined aquifer, and from altitudes of stream and river surfaces indicated on 1:24,000-scale topographic maps. Depth to the water table ranged from less than 5 feet below land surface near major streams to more than 75 feet on some of the kame terraces along the valley walls. Saturated thickness of the unconfined aquifer ranged from less than 1 foot near Norwich to more than 200 feet at a kame delta north of Oxford.

A discontinuous series of confined aquifers is present throughout much of the Chenango River valley north of Oxford. These aquifers consist of kame deposits, eskers, and subglacial outwash sand and gravel deposits that are overlain and confined by lacustrine fine sand, silt, and clay. The saturated thickness of these aquifers is as much as 150 feet near North Norwich.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03242","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation","usgsCitation":"Hetcher, K.K., Miller, T.S., Garry, J.D., and Reynolds, R.J., 2003, Geohydrology of the Valley-Fill aquifer in the Norwich-Oxford-Brisben area, Chenango County, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-242, 7 Plates: 20.00 x 30.00 iinches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03242.","productDescription":"7 Plates: 20.00 x 30.00 iinches","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":323224,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0242/ofr20030242_plate5.pdf","text":"Plate 5 - During April through September 2001, six monthly water samples for analysis of pesticides were collected from 22 sites: 17 sites were on 11 streams, and 5 sites were on 5 lakes.  During Apirl through July 2001, four monthly samples for analysis of oil and grease were collected from 5 sites: 4 sites were on three streams, and 1 site was on a lake.\r\n\r\nA total of 131 water samples were analyzed for 17 pesticides (15 insecticides and 2 herbicides).  The following classes of pesticides, as classified from the Pesticide Analysis (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 Laboratory), are reported: organochlorine, nitrogen-phosphorus, and carbamate.  The 8 pesticides detected in samples, in decreasing frequency, were as follow: atrazine, molinate, methyl parathion, 4,4'-DDT, carbofuran, diazinon, toxaphene, and 4,4'DDE.\r\n\r\nOrganochlorine pesticides (insecticides) represented the majority (12 out of 17) of the pesticides analyzed.  Of those 12 organochlorine pesticides, only 3 (4,4'-DDT, 4,4'-DDE, and toxaphene) were detected in the 131 samples.  Of the organochlorine pesticides, 4,4'-DDT was detected most frequently (in 11 percent of the samples), and concentrations ranged from 1.22 to 4.70 ng/L (nanograms per liter).\r\n\r\nNitrogen-phosphorus pesticides were the most frequently detected and abundant pesticides.  Of all the pesticides analyzed, atrazine and molinate (nitrogen-phosphorus herbicides) were the pesticides most frequently detected (in 93 and 21 percent of the samples), had the highest and most wide-ranging concentrations (10.8 to 15,100 ng/L and 10.0 to 11,600 ng/L), and were most widely distributed throughout the study area.\r\n\r\nCarbofuran, a carbamate insecticide, was detected at 8 of the 22 pesticide data-collection sites and in 9.2 percent of the 131 samples analyzed for pesticides.  Concentrations of carbofuran ranged from 30.7 to 946 ng/L.\r\n\r\nOf the 22 pesticide data-collection sites, the frequency of pesticide detection was highest at 6 sites:  Boeuf River near Arkansas-Louisiana State Line, Boeuf River near Fort Necessity, Big Creek at Louisiana Highway 135 near Winnsboro, Crew Lake at Crew Lake, Joe's Bayou near Waverly; and Bayou Macon at Louisiana Highway 562 near Wisner.  All water samples analyzed for oil and grease had concentrations less than the reporting limit of 5 milligrams per liter.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr03386","usgsCitation":"McGee, B.D., 2003, Pesticides and oil and grease in selected streams and lakes in northeastern Louisiana, 2001: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-386, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03386.","productDescription":"25 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":395559,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_67784.htm"},{"id":179688,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":94347,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://la.water.usgs.gov/publications/pdfs/OFR_03-386.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Louisiana","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -94.09790039062499,\n              31.44741029142872\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.0546875,\n              31.44741029142872\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.0546875,\n              33.073130945006625\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.09790039062499,\n              33.073130945006625\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.09790039062499,\n              31.44741029142872\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db68640b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGee, Benton D. bdmcgee@usgs.gov","contributorId":2899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGee","given":"Benton","email":"bdmcgee@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":369,"text":"Louisiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":246982,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
