The workshop was designed to address broad issues of knowledge and communication, and to help develop the mission, vision, and goals of the National Knowledge Bank called for in the 1999 NRC review of the CMGP.\r\n\r\nPresentations led by historians and philosophers yield to a wide-ranging review and discussion of the role of USGS science in society: USGS science is important to government to understand certain complicated public policy issues (such as the environment), but we must participate in two-way public dialogs to increase our relevance and usefulness. Presentations led by USGS communications experts reviewed the principles of audience analysis and effective communications: this focused look at audiences, markets, and products provided an introduction to the behaviors, the tools, and the terminology that might be applied to public discourse. Presentations by several information technology experts showed the potential - and pitfalls - of current schemes for Web-based information access. Finally, several brainstorming sessions developed action items, vision, and characteristics of a knowledge bank.\r\n\r\nBased on the workshop discussions and results, the authors developed the National Knowledge Bank Mission, Vision, and Goals statements.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03240","usgsCitation":"Hutchinson, D.R., Sanders, R., and Faust, T., 2003, Making USGS information effective in the electronic age (Online only): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-240, 124 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03240.","productDescription":"124 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":193126,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6927,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/of03-240/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Online only","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db649f34","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hutchinson, Debbie R.","contributorId":39881,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hutchinson","given":"Debbie","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sanders, Rex rsanders@usgs.gov","contributorId":4497,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sanders","given":"Rex","email":"rsanders@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":282607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Faust, T.","contributorId":54690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Faust","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Usually a Beowulf cluster is designed to accomplish a specific set of processing goals, and processing is very efficient when the problem remains inside the constraints of the original design. There are cases, however, when one might wish to compute a problem that is beyond the capacity of the local Beowulf system. Geological systems consist of a multiplicity of linked components with nested feedback loops; the dynamics of these systems are non-linear, iterative, multi-scale, and operate far from equilibrium. That notwithstanding, It appears that, with the exception of papers on seismic studies, geology and geophysics work has been disproportionally underrepresented at regional and national meetings on complex systems relative to papers in the life sciences. This is somewhat puzzling because geologists and geophysicists are, in many ways, preadapted to thinking of complex system mechanisms. Geologists and geophysicists think about processes involving large volumes of rock below the sunlit surface of Earth, the accumulated consequence of processes extending hundreds of millions of years in the past. Not only do geologists think in the abstract by virtue of the vast time spans, most of the evidence is out-of-sight.</p>\n<br>\n<p>A primary goal of this workshop is to begin to bridge the gap between the Earth sciences and life sciences through demonstration of the universality of complex systems science, both philosophically and in model structures.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03364","usgsCitation":"Mossotti, V.G., Barragan, J., and Westergard, T.D., 2003, Cx-02 Program, workshop on modeling complex systems (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-364, Readme; Report: 52 p.; Participants: DBF, CSV, FP5; Shape files, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03364.","productDescription":"Readme; Report: 52 p.; Participants: DBF, CSV, FP5; Shape files","numberOfPages":"53","temporalStart":"2002-11-19","temporalEnd":"2002-11-21","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":174049,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr03364.jpg"},{"id":285805,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Cx-02_participants/Cx-02_participants.fp5"},{"id":285804,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Cx-02_participants/Cx-02_participants.csv"},{"id":285803,"rank":4,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Cx-02_participants/Cx-02_participants.dbf"},{"id":285808,"rank":5,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/Shape_files_Cx-02_Participants/Shape_files_Cx-02_Participants.zip"},{"id":285802,"rank":6,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/pdf/OF03-364.pdf"},{"id":285801,"rank":7,"type":{"id":20,"text":"Read Me"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/1_README.TXT"},{"id":4881,"rank":8,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0364/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67ebea","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mossotti, Victor G. mossotti@usgs.gov","contributorId":3494,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mossotti","given":"Victor","email":"mossotti@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":246987,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barragan, Jo Ann","contributorId":97816,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barragan","given":"Jo Ann","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":246989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Westergard, Todd D.","contributorId":92970,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Westergard","given":"Todd","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":246988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This report depicts the principal geographic features of the study area; locations of domestic, commercial, and municipal wells from which data were obtained to construct water-table and saturated-thickness maps and five geohydrologic sections; surficial geology; water-table altitude; generalized saturated thickness of the unconfined (water-table) aquifer; generalized thickness of the discontinuous series of confined aquifers; and five geohydrologic sections, all of which are in the northern part of the study area.</p><p>The unconsolidated material in the Chenango River valley consists primarily of three types of deposits: (1) glaciofluvial material consisting of stratified coarse-grained sediment (sand and gravel) that was deposited by meltwater streams flowing above, below, or next to a glacier; (2) glaciolacustrine material consisting of stratified fine-grained sediment (very fine sand, silt, and clay) that was deposited in lakes that formed at the front of a glacier; and (3) recent alluvial material consisting of stratified fine-to-medium grained sediment (fine-to-medium sand and silt) that was deposited on flood plains.</p><p>The water-table map was compiled from water-level data obtained from wells completed in the unconfined aquifer, and from altitudes of stream and river surfaces indicated on 1:24,000-scale topographic maps. Depth to the water table ranged from less than 5 feet below land surface near major streams to more than 75 feet on some of the kame terraces along the valley walls. Saturated thickness of the unconfined aquifer ranged from less than 1 foot near Norwich to more than 200 feet at a kame delta north of Oxford.</p><p>A discontinuous series of confined aquifers is present throughout much of the Chenango River valley north of Oxford. These aquifers consist of kame deposits, eskers, and subglacial outwash sand and gravel deposits that are overlain and confined by lacustrine fine sand, silt, and clay. The saturated thickness of these aquifers is as much as 150 feet near North Norwich.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03242","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation","usgsCitation":"Hetcher, K.K., Miller, T.S., Garry, J.D., and Reynolds, R.J., 2003, Geohydrology of the Valley-Fill aquifer in the Norwich-Oxford-Brisben area, Chenango County, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-242, 7 Plates: 20.00 x 30.00 iinches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03242.","productDescription":"7 Plates: 20.00 x 30.00 iinches","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":323224,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0242/ofr20030242_plate5.pdf","text":"Plate 5 - During April through September 2001, six monthly water samples for analysis of pesticides were collected from 22 sites: 17 sites were on 11 streams, and 5 sites were on 5 lakes.  During Apirl through July 2001, four monthly samples for analysis of oil and grease were collected from 5 sites: 4 sites were on three streams, and 1 site was on a lake.\r\n\r\nA total of 131 water samples were analyzed for 17 pesticides (15 insecticides and 2 herbicides).  The following classes of pesticides, as classified from the Pesticide Analysis (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 Laboratory), are reported: organochlorine, nitrogen-phosphorus, and carbamate.  The 8 pesticides detected in samples, in decreasing frequency, were as follow: atrazine, molinate, methyl parathion, 4,4'-DDT, carbofuran, diazinon, toxaphene, and 4,4'DDE.\r\n\r\nOrganochlorine pesticides (insecticides) represented the majority (12 out of 17) of the pesticides analyzed.  Of those 12 organochlorine pesticides, only 3 (4,4'-DDT, 4,4'-DDE, and toxaphene) were detected in the 131 samples.  Of the organochlorine pesticides, 4,4'-DDT was detected most frequently (in 11 percent of the samples), and concentrations ranged from 1.22 to 4.70 ng/L (nanograms per liter).\r\n\r\nNitrogen-phosphorus pesticides were the most frequently detected and abundant pesticides.  Of all the pesticides analyzed, atrazine and molinate (nitrogen-phosphorus herbicides) were the pesticides most frequently detected (in 93 and 21 percent of the samples), had the highest and most wide-ranging concentrations (10.8 to 15,100 ng/L and 10.0 to 11,600 ng/L), and were most widely distributed throughout the study area.\r\n\r\nCarbofuran, a carbamate insecticide, was detected at 8 of the 22 pesticide data-collection sites and in 9.2 percent of the 131 samples analyzed for pesticides.  Concentrations of carbofuran ranged from 30.7 to 946 ng/L.\r\n\r\nOf the 22 pesticide data-collection sites, the frequency of pesticide detection was highest at 6 sites:  Boeuf River near Arkansas-Louisiana State Line, Boeuf River near Fort Necessity, Big Creek at Louisiana Highway 135 near Winnsboro, Crew Lake at Crew Lake, Joe's Bayou near Waverly; and Bayou Macon at Louisiana Highway 562 near Wisner. NJWaTr can manage data encompassing many facets of water use, including (1) the tracking of various types of water-use activities (withdrawals, returns, transfers, distributions, consumptive-use, wastewater collection, and treatment); (2) the storage of descriptions, classifications and locations of places and organizations involved in water-use activities; (3) the storage of details about measured or estimated volumes of water associated with water-use activities; and (4) the storage of information about data sources and water resources associated with water use. In NJWaTr, each water transfer occurs unidirectionally between two site objects, and the sites and conveyances form a water network. The core entities in the NJWaTr model are site, conveyance, transfer/volume, location, and owner. Other important entities include water resource (used for withdrawals and returns), data source, permit, and alias. Multiple water-exchange estimates based on different methods or data sources can be stored for individual transfers. Storage of user-defined details is accommodated for several of the main entities. Many tables contain classification terms to facilitate the detailed description of data items and can be used for routine or custom data summarization. NJWaTr accommodates single-user and aggregate-user water-use data, can be used for large or small water-network projects, and is available as a stand-alone Microsoft? Access database. Data stored in the NJWaTr structure can be retrieved in user-defined combinations to serve visualization and analytical applications. Users can customize and extend the database, link it to other databases, or implement the design in other relational database applications.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03197","usgsCitation":"Tessler, S., 2003, Data model and relational database design for the New Jersey Water-Transfer Data System (NJWaTr): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-197, 204 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03197.","productDescription":"204 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":4797,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr03197","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":177385,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c255","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tessler, Steven stessler@usgs.gov","contributorId":3772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tessler","given":"Steven","email":"stessler@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":247829,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A broad range of chemical and biological analyses from three sets of samples are presented. First, samples were collected throughout the year at five stations in the basin (three on the mainstem Yukon River, one each on the Tanana and Porcupine Rivers). Second, fecal indicators were measured on samples from drinking-water supplies collected near four villages. Third, sediment cores from five lakes throughout the Yukon Basin were sampled to reconstruct historic trends in the atmospheric deposition of trace elements and hydrophobic organic compounds.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03427","usgsCitation":"Schuster, P.F., 2003, Water and Sediment Quality in the Yukon River Basin, Alaska, During Water Year 2001: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-427, 120 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03427.","productDescription":"120 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":4906,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr03427/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":176980,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa380","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schuster, Paul F. 0000-0002-8314-1372 pschuste@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8314-1372","contributorId":1360,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schuster","given":"Paul","email":"pschuste@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":438,"text":"National Research Program - Western Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":247950,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Segments of the three water bodies are on the State 303(d) list. Continuous monitoring showed that seasonal variations in water temperature, specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen in all three water bodies were similar to those observed at U.S. Geological Survey stations along the Texas Gulf Coast. In particular, water temperature and dissolved oxygen are inversely related. Periods of smallest dissolved oxygen concentrations generally occurred in the summer months when water temperatures were highest. Water-quality monitors were deployed at three depths in Dickinson Bayou. For periodically collected nutrients, the median concentration of ammonia nitrogen was largest in Dickinson Bayou and smallest in the San Bernard River. Median concentrations of ammonia plus organic nitrogen, nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen, and orthophosphorus were largest in Armand Bayou. The median concentration of each of the four nutrients was larger for high-flow samples than for low-flow samples. The largest individual nutrient concentrations occurred during spring and summer. Both median and individual concentrations of chlorophyll-a were largest for Armand Bayou; median concentrations of pheophyton were similar for all three water bodies, and individual concentrations were largest for Armand Bayou. Median densities of fecal coliform bacteria and <i>E. coli</i> bacteria were similar for all three water bodies. Flow conditions had minimal effect on concentrations of chlorophyll-a and pheophytin, but the largest bacteria densities were in samples collected during high flow. Yields of most nutrients tended to increase with distance downstream. Yields in the San Bernard River and tributaries were less than yields in Dickinson and Armand Bayous. For Dickinson and Armand Bayous, the most individuals and species of fish were collected at the most downstream main stem site; for the San Bernard River, the fewest individuals and species of fish were collected at the most downstream main stem site.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr03459","collaboration":"In cooperation with the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality","usgsCitation":"East, J., and Hogan, J.L., 2003, Hydrologic, water-quality, and biological data for three water bodies, Texas Gulf Coastal Plain, 2000-2002: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-459, v, 74 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03459.","productDescription":"v, 74 p.","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":179351,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0459/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":5089,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr03459/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":87545,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0459/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"2.01 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Armand Bayou, Dickinson Bayou, San Bernard River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -97,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -97,\n              30\n            ],\n            [\n              -95,\n              30\n            ],\n            [\n              -95,\n              29\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae2e4b07f02db688bf8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"East, Jeffery W. jweast@usgs.gov","contributorId":1683,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"East","given":"Jeffery W.","email":"jweast@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":248233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hogan, Jennifer L.","contributorId":51812,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hogan","given":"Jennifer","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":248234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These wells are in the area of the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center (INTEC) Vadose Zone Research Park within the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). Paleomagnetic measurements were made on 508 samples from the four coreholes, which are compared to each other, and to surface outcrop paleomagnetic data. In general, subhorizontal lines of correlation exist between sediment layers and between basalt layers in the area of the new percolation ponds. Some of the basalt flows and flow sequences are strongly correlative at different depth intervals and represent important stratigraphic unifying elements. Some units pinch out, or thicken or thin even over short separation distances of about 1,500 ft. A more distant correlation of more than 1 mile to corehole USGS 128 is possible for several of the basalt flows, but at greater depth. This is probably due to the broad subsidence of the eastern Snake River Plain centered along its topographic axis located to the south of INEEL. This study shows this most clearly in the oldest portions of the cored sections that have differentially subsided the greatest amount.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr03483","usgsCitation":"Champion, D.E., and Herman, T.C., 2003, Paleomagnetism of basaltic lava flows in coreholes ICPP-213, ICPP-214, ICPP-215, and USGS 128 near the Vadose Zone Research Park, Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center, Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-483, iii, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03483.","productDescription":"iii, 15 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177664,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":399782,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_67782.htm"},{"id":4685,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/of03483","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Vadose Zone Research Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -113,\n              43.5561\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.9633,\n              43.5561\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.9633,\n              43.4783\n            ],\n            [\n              -113,\n              43.4783\n            ],\n            [\n              -113,\n              43.5561\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db689bf4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Champion, Duane E. 0000-0001-7854-9034 dchamp@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7854-9034","contributorId":2912,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Champion","given":"Duane","email":"dchamp@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":248495,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Herman, Theodore C.","contributorId":70646,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Herman","given":"Theodore","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":248496,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The original paper publication was printed as a single map sheet at a scale of 1:500,000, accompanied by a second sheet containing map unit descriptions and ancillary data. A digital version of the Walker and MacLeod (1991) map was included in Raines and others (1996).\r\n\r\nThe dataset provided by this open-file report supersedes the earlier published digital version (Raines and others, 1996). This digital spatial database is one of many being created by the U.S. Geological Survey as an ongoing effort to provide geologic information for use in spatial analysis in a geographic information system (GIS). This database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps. This database is not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:500,000 (for example, 1:100,000).\r\n\r\nThis report describes the methods used to convert the geologic map data into a digital format, describes the ArcInfo GIS file structures and relationships, and explains how to download the digital files from the U.S. Geological Survey public access World Wide Web site on the Internet. Scanned images of the printed map (Walker and MacLeod, 1991), their correlation of map units, and their explanation of map symbols are also available for download.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr200367","usgsCitation":"Walker, G.W., MacLeod, N.S., Miller, R.J., Raines, G.L., and Connors, K.A., 2003, Spatial digital database for the geologic map of Oregon (Version 2.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-67, Report: 21 p.; Digital Database (map originally published in 1991), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr200367.","productDescription":"Report: 21 p.; Digital Database (map originally published in 1991)","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":391,"text":"Minerals Resources Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":499706,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_62171.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":4979,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/of03-067/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":178050,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"500000","projection":"Lambert conformal conic","country":"United States","state":"Oregon","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -125.38333333333334,41.9 ], [ -125.38333333333334,46.35 ], [ -116.41666666666667,46.35 ], [ -116.41666666666667,41.9 ], [ -125.38333333333334,41.9 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"Version 2.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e486ae4b07f02db50a333","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Walker, George W.","contributorId":101308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walker","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":247149,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"MacLeod, Norman S.","contributorId":13643,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"MacLeod","given":"Norman","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":247146,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Miller, Robert J. rjmiller@usgs.gov","contributorId":2516,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Robert","email":"rjmiller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":247145,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Raines, Gary L.","contributorId":48162,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Raines","given":"Gary","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":247147,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Connors, Katherine A.","contributorId":53785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Connors","given":"Katherine","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":247148,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The watershed is in the eastern part of Washington, D.C., and has been subjected to over 200 years of urbanization and modifications of the river channel and nearby land areas. These anthropogenic factors, along with tidal fluctuations in the river, make ground-water data collection and interpretations difficult.\r\n\r\nThe U.S. Geological Survey is cooperating with the District of Columbia Department of Health, Environmental Health Administration, Bureau of Environmental Quality, Water Quality Division, in a study to assess nonpoint-source pollution from ground water into the lower tidal Anacostia River. Lithologic cores from drilling activities conducted during July 2002 in the study area have been interpreted in the context of geologic and hydrogeologic information from previous studies in the lower Anacostia tidal watershed. These interpretations can help achieve the overall project goals of characterizing ground-water flow and contaminant load in the study area.\r\n\r\nHydrostratigraphic units encountered during drilling generally consisted of late Pleistocene to Holocene fluvial deposits overlying Cretaceous fluvial/deltaic deposits. Cores collected in Beaverdam Creek and the Anacostia River indicated high- and low-energy environments of deposition, respectively. Two cores collected near the river showed different types of anthropogenic fill underlain by low-energy deposits, which were in turn underlain by sand and gravel. A third core collected near the river consisted primarily of sand and gravel with no artificial fill.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003318","usgsCitation":"Tenbus, F.J., 2003, Lithologic coring in the lower Anacostia tidal watershed, Washington, D.C., July 2002: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-318, iii, 62 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003318.","productDescription":"iii, 62 p.","temporalStart":"2002-07-01","temporalEnd":"2002-07-31","costCenters":[{"id":41514,"text":"Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia  Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":174144,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":403567,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_67773.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":9038,"rank":3,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr03-318/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","city":"Washington DC","otherGeospatial":"tidal Anacostia watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.02651977539062,\n              38.84505571861154\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.92489624023438,\n              38.84505571861154\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.92489624023438,\n              38.93377552819722\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.02651977539062,\n              38.93377552819722\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.02651977539062,\n              38.84505571861154\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a481f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tenbus, Frederick J.","contributorId":52145,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tenbus","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":247003,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
