The aquifer system ranges between 50 and 300 feet thick and is composed of a surficial sand unit underlain by a limestone unit. Sand and clay confining beds separate the shallow aquifer system from the highly productive, extensively developed deep aquifer system. The hydrologic budget of the area indicates that annual leakage of water from the shallow to the deep aquifer system is 2.6 inches while annual pumpage from the deep aquifer system averages 5.5 inches. Management alternatives to be considered for efficient use of the shallow ground-water resources include development by withdrawal wells or connector wells for recharge. One solution for a gridded network of wells consists of 540 wells spaced 7,000 feet apart, each producing 453 gallons per minute. The network would derive water to meet demand by capturing water that would normally have run off evapotranspired. The model assumes a well-mixed conservative solute that may be coming from an unsteady source and is moving in unsteady streamflow. The quantity of solute being transported is in the units of concentration. Results are reported as such. An implicit finite-difference technique is used to solve the mass transport equation. It consists of creating a tridiagonal matrix and using the Thomas algorithm to solve the matrix for the unknown concentrations at the new time step. The computer program pesented is designed to compute the concentration of a water-quality constituent at any point and at any preselected time in a one-dimensional stream. The model is driven by the inflowing concentration of solute at the upstream boundary and is influenced by the solute entering the stream from tributaries and lateral ground-water inflow and from a source or sink. To meet this need, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District, studied the Arkansas River from Pueblo Reservoir to John Martin Reservoir, a distance of 142 river miles.

The volumes of reservoir releases are decreased or delayed during tran-sit by bank storage, channel storage, and evaporation. Results from a com-puter model, calibrated by a controlled-test release from Pueblo Reservoir, indicate transit losses are greatest for small releases of short duration that are made during periods of low antecedent streamflow. For equivalent releases, transit losses during the winter are about 7 percent less than losses during the summer.

Based on available streamflow records, the traveltime of reservoir releases in the study reach ranges from about 1.67 hours per mile at the downstream end of the study reach when antecedent streamflow is 10 cubic feet per second, to about 0.146 hour per mile at the upstream end of the study reach when antecedent streamflow is 3,000 cubic feet per second. Consequently, the traveltime of a release increases as antecedent streamflow diminishes.

Management practices that may be used to benefit water users in the study area include selection of the optimum time, rate, and duration of a reservoir release to minimize the transit losses, determination of an accurate traveltime, and diversion at several incremental rates.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7875","usgsCitation":"Livingston, R.K., 1978, Transit losses and traveltimes of reservoir releases along the Arkansas River from Pueblo Reservoir to John Martin Reservoir, southeastern Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-75, iv, 30 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7875.","productDescription":"iv, 30 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159083,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0075/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359413,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0075/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Arkansas River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.732666015625,\n              37.9051994823157\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.7606201171875,\n              37.9051994823157\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.7606201171875,\n              38.324420427006544\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.732666015625,\n              38.324420427006544\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.732666015625,\n              37.9051994823157\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f129c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Livingston, Russell K.","contributorId":69582,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Livingston","given":"Russell","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199763,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The peninsula includes the most extensive area of wetland in North Carolina and one of the largest in the country. In recent years the pace of land clearing on the peninsula has accelerated as land is being converted from forest, swamp, and brushland to agricultural use. Conversion of swamps to intensive farming operations requires profound changes in the landscape. Vegetation is uprooted and burned and ditches and canals are dug to remove excess water. What is the impact of these changes on ground-water supplies and on the streams and surrounding coastal waters which receive the runoff This map will aid in answering these and similar questions that have arisen about the patterns of land use and the artificial drainage system that removes excess water from the land. By showing both land use and drainage, this map can be used to identify those areas where water-related problems may occur and help assess the nature and causes of these problems. The map covers the entire area east of the Suffolk Scarp, an area of about 2,000 square miles, for the year 1974 using data from 1974-76. Land use and land cover were compiled and modified from the U.S. Geological Survey 's Rocky Mount and Manteo LUDA maps. Additional information came from U.S. Geological Survey orthophotoquads, Landsat imagery, and field checking. Drainage was mapped from orthophotoquads, some field inspection, and 7-1/2 minute topographic quadrangle maps.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri78134","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Community Development","usgsCitation":"Daniel, C., 1978, Land use, land cover, and drainage on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula, Eastern North Carolina, 1974: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-134, 2 Plates: 47.94 x 30.89 inches and 47.90 x 31.02 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri78134.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 47.94 x 30.89 inches and 47.90 x 31.02 inches","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":158490,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0134/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":492647,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0134/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":492646,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0134/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":492648,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0134/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Albemarle-Pamplico Peninsula","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -78.046875,\n              34.44315867450577\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.046875,\n              36.57142382346277\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.99267578125,\n              36.57142382346277\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.99267578125,\n              34.44315867450577\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.046875,\n              34.44315867450577\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6adf98","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Daniel, C.C.","contributorId":53427,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniel","given":"C.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196918,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The 1975 daily total was made up of 11,502 million gallons of saline water and 6,918 million gallons of freshwater. The saline water supply, largely surface water, was pumped from tidal estuaries. Only 95.3 Mgal/d--less than 1 percent--was obtained from wells. The freshwater supply was almost equally divided between surface water (52 percent) and ground water (48 percent). Virtually all the saline water was used for thermoelectric power generation. Only 63 Mgal/d of saline water was used for all other industrial purposes. The largest user of the freshwater was for irrigation--2,868 Mgal/d. The remaining use of freshwater amounted to 1,698 Mgal/d for thermoelectric power generation; 1 ,146 Mgal/d for public supply; 940 Mgal/d for industrial use other than thermoelectric power generation; and 266 Mgal/d for rural domestic and livestock use. Irrigation, the largest user of freshwater, also is responsible for the greatest consumption, 1,332 Mgal/d or about half the water applied. Included in the quantity of water consumed by irrigation is that part of the conveyance loss made up of evapotranspiration--estimated at 109 Mgal/d. The remainder of the conveyance loss is returned to the ground water reservoir for reuse by seepage from the canals. The oil-shale zone, which is to be penetrated by a shaft, is overlain by 1,400 feet of sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstone and marlstone, consisting of two aquifers separated by a confining layer. Three test holes were drilled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to obtain samples of the oil shale, and to test the hydraulic properties of the two aquifers. The data collected during construction of the test holes were used to update an existing ground-water-flow computer model. The model was used to estimate the maximum amount of water that would have to be pumped to dewater the shaft during its construction. It is estimated that it would be necessary to pump as much as 3,080 gallons per minute to keep the shaft dry. Disposal of waste water and rock are the principal hydrologic problems associated with constructing the shaft. The regional model was developed by describing annual temperature patterns at 43 measured sites and by applying the harmonic function T = M + A -sin (0.0172 t + C)- where: T is mean daily temperature; M, A, and C are harmonic coefficients calculated from data for each stream-temperature station; and t is the day of the water year. Application of the equation for estimating temperatures at unmeasured sites requires regionalized estimates of M, A, and C. Regional estimates were developed with the aid of multiple-regression techniques, whereby the calculated harmonic coefficients were regressed against physical and climatic characteristics of the stream-temperature stations. Stream elevation was a significant factor affecting water temperature. Analysis of areal and temporal variations in temperature showed that springs, irrigation return flows, and reservoir storage were affecting reaches of several major streams. The climatic factors were developed by regression analysis of flood data using a parametric rainfall-runoff model and long-term rainfall records. Map estimates of C values and calibrated values of rainfall-runoff model parameters were used as variables in a synthetic T-year flood relation to compute ' map-model ' flood estimates for 98 small drainage basins in a six-state study area. Improved estimates of T-year floods were computed as a weighted average of the map-model estimate and an observed estimate, with the weights proportional to the relative accuracies of the two estimates. The accuracy of the map-model estimates was appraised by decomposing components of variance into average time-sampling error associated with the observed estimates and average map-model error. Map-model estimates have an accuracy, in terms of equivalent length of observed record, that ranges from 6 years for the 1.25-year flood up to 30 years for the 50- and 100-year flood. A digital model of the ground water/surface-water system was stressed with recharge and withdrawal functions determined from a linear reservoir model of the soil zone.

The geohydrologic system includes a regional aquifer which containssand and gravel ranging in age from Pliocene through Pleistocene. The regional aquifer is unconfined in the western part of the watershed and confined in the eastern part. The confining layer, or blue clay, in the east is of Pleistocene age and comprises principally saturated eolian silts with very fine sand interbeds overlying a basal lacustrine clay. Where unconfined conditions exist in the regional aquifer, perennial flow of Willow Creek is sustained principally by ground-water discharge. Where confined conditions exist, the low hydraulic conductivity of the blue clay effectively isolates the regional aquifer from Willow Creek.

The stream-aquifer models were tested by comparing simulated against measured water levels and streamflow during 1975 and 1976. Agreement between simulated and observed values was obtained by modifying initial estimates of aquifer hydraulic conductivity and specific storage.

Future ground-water discharge to Willow Creek (base flow) was simulated by super-imposing different patterns of ground-water withdrawals upon variations from average recharge for a monthly climatic sequence identical with the period 1931 to 1954. Frequency analyses of the simulated monthly base flows showed that they would be less than 12 feet3 per second at least 50 percent of the time under all but completely undeveloped conditions. Simulated water-level declines in the regional aquifer at the end of the pumping season after a drought period similar to that of the 1930's were less than 5 feet where unconfined conditions exist and were more than 80 feet where confined conditions exist.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7867","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District and Conservation and Survey Division, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln","usgsCitation":"Dugan, J.T., and Lappala, E.G., 1978, Predictive analyses of ground-water discharges in the Willow Creek Watershed, northeast Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-67, v, 66 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7867.","productDescription":"v, 66 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":363537,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0067/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157351,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0067/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States ","state":"Nebraska","otherGeospatial":"Willow Creek watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.97744750976562,\n              41.964085349226664\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.24067687988281,\n              41.964085349226664\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.24067687988281,\n              42.36919824433563\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.97744750976562,\n              42.36919824433563\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.97744750976562,\n              41.964085349226664\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db605281","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dugan, Jack T.","contributorId":102456,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dugan","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197175,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lappala, Eric G.","contributorId":23182,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lappala","given":"Eric","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197174,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

No major changes in water levels or water quality were noted at 1975 pumping rates. Recharge to the ground-water system compensates for both artificial and natural discharge. The position of the freshwater-saltwater transition zone underlying the alluvial flood plains in the summer of 1975 were unchanged from those in 1952. Ground water continues to be used principally for irrigation on the alluvial flood plains of the Eel and Mad Rivers. In 1975, about 425 irrigation wells supplied an estimated 24,000 acre-feet of ground water to the Eureka area; half of those wells were located on the Eel River flood plain. The estimated total ground-water pumpage for irrigation, industry, public supply, domestic use, and livestock was 27,500 acre-feet. During the irrigation season, there is a higher rate of recharge from the rivers which helps to maintain ground-water storage and stabilize the freshwater-seawater transition zone. The impoundment, which has a surface area of about 4,000 acres, was initially filled late in 1969. Water of relatively poor quality was observed in the impoundment during its first three years of its existence (1970-72).

The depth of the impoundment is sufficient to allow thermal stratification, and a thermocline usually develops at depths of 8 to 10 feet. During 1970-72 the hypolimnion remained anaerobic for more than half the year. The hypolimnion also accumulated high concentrations of phosphorus, ammonia-nitrogen, carbon dioxide, ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide and other substances. The poor water quality is attributed to the decomposition of flooded vegetation, decomposition of soil organic matter, and heavy growths of phytoplankton and duckweed stimulated by an abundant supply of nutrients. Flushing of the impoundment and depletion of leachable nutrients and soil organic matter have led to an improvement in water quality since 1972.

During 1973 and 1974 the depth to the top of the anaerobic zone increased to more than 12 feet and by 1974 the period of anaerobiosis decreased to less than 2 months out of 12. Phosphorus concentration after the fall overturn decreased more than 50 percent between 1970 and 1974. The reduction in biochemical oxygen demand during this period suggests a decrease in primary productivity.

Water released from the impoundment during the period 1969-75 was similar in quality to nearby Wolf Creek and Jane Green Creek. Of 21 physical, organic, and inorganic constituents, only ammonia-nitrogen was significantly higher in releases from the impoundment than it was in the natural streams. Dissolved oxygen was higher in water released from the impoundment than in the natural streams and dissolved solids concentration were lower. Large releases from the impoundment may, under certain conditions, produce velocities great enough to resuspend bottom sediments several miles downstream at a point where Taylor Creek flows into Lake Poinsett.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7891","usgsCitation":"Goolsby, D.A., and McPherson, B.F., 1978, Limnology of Taylor Creek impoundment with reference to other water bodies in Upper St. Johns River Basin, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-91, vii, 95 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7891.","productDescription":"vii, 95 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158482,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0091/reprot-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359119,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0091/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Upper St. Johns River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.25,\n              27.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.5,\n              27.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.5,\n              28.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.25,\n              28.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.25,\n              27.5            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a5133","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Goolsby, Donald A.","contributorId":46083,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goolsby","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197994,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McPherson, Benjamin F.","contributorId":17965,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McPherson","given":"Benjamin","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197993,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The ground-water basin extends from Monterey Bay southeastward along the Salinas River to San Ardo, a distance of about 70 miles, and has a maximum thickness of about 2,000 feet. Annual recharge to the ground-water basin, which is derived mostly from the Salinas River, is about 290,000 acre-feet. Annual discharge, which is mostly from pumpage but also includes the consumptive use of ground water by riparian vegetation along the Salinas River, is about 507,000 acre-feet. About 45 percent of the pumpage, or about 217,000 acre-feet of water annually, returns to the ground-water system. A system of interacting hydrologic models was developed for the Salinas Valley. These models include the small-stream model, river model, two-dimensional ground-water model, and three-dimensional ground-water model. The small-stream model simulates ground-water recharge from small streams that are tributary to the Salinas River. The river model simulates ground-water recharge from the surface-water discharge in the Salinas River. The two-dimensional and three-dimensional ground-water models simulate hydraulic head in the ground-water basin. Occasionally the concentrations of fluoride, turbidity, cadmium, chromium, and lead approximated, equaled, or exceeded maximum contaminant levels with exceedences occurring very infrequently. The pesticides 2,4-D and silvex, were detected in some public supplies throughout the State mainly in surface water. Although pesticides were not detected in concentrations approaching the maximum levels established in the regulations, their presence does signal that the activities of man are beginning to affect some water resources. A discrete, identifiable leachate plume has been recognized under and downgradient from the waste disposal facility. Concentrations of sodium, ammonia, and dissolved solids decreased with depth beneath the disposal area and downgradient in response to an advective and convective dispersion. At a distance of about one-half downgradient, the rate of contribution of leachate from the source to the leading edge of the plume was about equal to the rate of loss of leachate from the leading edge of the plume by diffusion and dilution by rainfall infiltration during the period August 1973 - July 1975. Heavy metals and pesticides are filtered, adsorbed by aquifer materials, or are precipitated near the disposal area. Potential annual-runoff loads on the bridge surface for virtually all constituents studied were less than one percent of those transported by the river at the study site. The loading rates for some parameters were significantly related to traffic counts, but the regression equations were limited to traffic ranges between 3,800 to 4,200 vehicles per day in 1977-78. Flow of the lower Hillsborough River and storage in Tampa Reservoir become deficient during annual dry periods. Excluding dead storage, Tampa Reservoir capacity is 2,000 million gallons at a maximum stage of 22.5 feet above mean sea level. For 20-year, annual-minimum-flow conditions, Hillsborough River flow is exceeded when the draft rate reaches 38 million gallons per day. In any year, at full capacity, Tampa Reservoir and Hillsborough River have a 5-percent chance of failing to supply at least 66 million gallons of water per day; and a 2-percent chance of failing to supply at least 59 million gallons per day.

Runoff and effluent from agricultural, industrial, and urban areas enter the stream system above Tampa Reservoir. The basins ranged in size from 1.68 to 297 square miles. Sediment yields ranged from 2,890 to 21,000 tons per square mile where surface-mining techniques predominated, and from 732 to 3 ,470 tons per square mile where underground mining methods predominated. Yields, in terms of tons per acre-foot of runoff, ranged from 2.2 to 15 for surface-mined areas, and from 0.5 to 2.7 for underground-mined areas. Water and sediment discharges from direct runoff during storms were compared for selected surface-mined and underground-mined areas. Data points of two extensively surface-mined areas, one from the current project and one from a previous project in Beaver Creek basin, McCreary County, Kentucky, grouped similarly in magnitude and by season. Disturbed areas from mining activities determined from aerial photographs reached 17 percent in one study area where extensive surface mining was being practiced. For most areas where underground mining was practiced, percentage disturbed area was almost negligible. Trap efficiency of Fishtrap Lake was 89 percent, and was 62 percent for Dewey Lake. Average annual deposition rates were 464 and 146 acre-feet for Fishtrap and Dewey Lakes, respectively. Current and future artificial recharge of the basin may cause the potentiometric surface in an area of confined ground water to rise above land surface and water to flow from uncapped and unplugged wells. This could cause damage to structures where the soil becomes waterlogged and where buried wells begin to flow beneath the structures. A well-response model was used to generate a series of water-level hydrographs representing the response of the ground-water basin to six possible combinations of conditions for each well; one pumping rate, two artificial-recharge rate, and three natural-recharge rates. Inflow to the ground-water basin exceeds outflow for all tested combinations. According to model predictions, the accumulation of stored ground water resulting from the excess of inflow is sufficient to cause the water level in the selected wells to rise above land surface for all but one of the combinations of conditions tested. Water levels in wells are predicted to rise above the land surface as early as 1981 for the combination with the greatest excess of inflow. Two of the aquifers, fractured-cyrstalline and volcanic rocks, have a water table ranging from 10 to 100 feet below land surface and well yields range from 0.08 to 6 gallons per minute. The consolidated sedimentary-rock and unconsolidated-alluvial aquifers have a water table ranging from near land surface to 60 feet below land surface and well yields range from 2 to 50 gallons per minute. The aquifers generally contain calcium bicarbonate water with concentrations of dissolved solids ranging from 101 to 636 milligrams per liter. In some areas, concentrations of iron as much as 18,000 micrograms per liter and concentrations of fluoride as much as 5.6 milligrams per liter affect suitability for domestic use. Chemical degradation of ground water has occurred in 18 of the 35 wells and in the 1 spring that were sampled. Bacterial contamination was found in water from six wells. Pumpage from the aquifer in 1976 was approximately 6.3 million gallons per day and is expected to increase as a result of population growth and urbanization. A digital ground-water model that uses a finite-difference approximation technique to solve partial differential equations of flow through a porous medium was used to simulate the movement of water within the aquifer. The model was calibrated to equilibrium conditions by comparing water levels measured in the aquifer in March 1976 with those computed by the model. Then, from the simulated water-level surface for March, a transient-condition run was made to simulate the surface as measured in September 1976. Computed water levels presented as contours are generally in close agreement with potentiometric-surface maps prepared from field measurements of March and September 1976.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7871","usgsCitation":"Cosner, O.J., and Harsh, J.F., 1978, Digital-model simulation of the glacial-outwash aquifer, Otter Creek-Dry Creek basin, Cortland County, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-71, vi, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7871.","productDescription":"vi, 34 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413775,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35265.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":266240,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0071/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158209,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","county":"Cortland County","otherGeospatial":"Otter Creek-Dry Creek basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.167,\n              42.542\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.167,\n              42.617\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.267,\n              42.617\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.267,\n              42.542\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.167,\n              42.542\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ad02","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cosner, O.
