Short-term and seasonal fluctuations in concentrations of these substances were evaluated to determine their relation to nonpoint discharges. Major factors that may cause concentrations of these substances to fluctuate at any particular site are precipitation, lawn fertilizer, dissolved salts in storm runoff, and effluent from septic tanks and cesspools. Chloride concentrations during the study fluctuated by as little as 2 milligrams per liter (mg/liter) at some sites and as much as 300 mg/liter at others. Nitrate and sulfate concentrations showed essentially no change at some sites but fluctuated by as much as 8 and 40 mg/liter, respectively, at others. Short-term fluctuations in the concentrations of these substances in ground water seem to have no consistent correlation with type of land use (suburban or agricultural) or precipitation but seem to be related to seasonal variations in input from specific nonpoint sources. Based on multiple-regression analyses of data from 59 gaged sites in New Hampshire and adjacent areas of bordering states, peak discharges for recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years can be estimated equations. The estimating relations can be applied to streams where flows are not significantly affected by regulation, diversion, or urbanization; where usable manmade storage does not exceed 4.5 million cubic feet per square mile; or where the basin characteristics are within a specified range. The average standard error of the estimate ranged from 35 percent for the 2-year flood to 58 percent for the 100-year flood. Two inferred concealed faults occur in the aquifer; one trending northeast-southwest in the eastern part of the county. The maximum vertical displacement of the top of the aquifer of both faults is about 150 feet. A geologic section included on the map shows the geologic formations of Eocene age that comprise the Floridan aquifer. These are, in ascending order: the Lake City Limestone, the Avon Park Limestone, and the Ocala Limestone. Ground water is present in several aquifers that are made up of one or more formations. In the Paria Plateau and Wahweap areas ground water is obtained from the N aquifer, which includes the Navajo Sandstone, Kayenta Formation, and Moenave Formation. Reported static water levels in wells range from 515 to 1,500 ft below the land surface. The chemical quality of the water in the N aquifer varies with location, and dissolved solids generally are less than 850 milligrams per liter. Several wells and test holes in the Lees Ferry area penetrate either the alluvium, Chinle Formation, Moenkopi Formation, or a combination of these. As of 1976, water from these wells was not being used because of poor chemical quality. In the southern and western parts of the area many springs discharge from te Kaibab, Redwall , and Muav Limestones. The quality of water from these formations generally is excellent. Information on the map (scale 1:125,000) includes the principal aquifer that furnishes water to individual wells and springs, depth to water, altitude of the water level, and chemical quality of the water. Most of the nonpoint-source constituent loads in the Atlanta to Whitesburg reach were from urban areas. Average annual point-source discharges accounted for about 50 percent of the dissolved nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus loads and about 70 percent of the dissolved phosphorus loads at Whitesburg. During a low-flow period, June 1-2, 1977, five municipal point-sources contributed 63 percent of the ultimate biochemical oxygen demand, and 97 percent of the ammonium nitrogen loads at the Franklin station, at the upstream end of West Point Lake. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations of 4.1 to 5.0 milligrams per liter occurred in a 22-mile reach of the river downstream from Atlanta due about equally to nitrogenous and carbonaceous oxygen demands. The heat load from two thermoelectric powerplants caused a decrease in dissolved-oxygen concentration of about 0.2 milligrams per liter. Phytoplankton concentrations in West Point Lake, about 70 miles downstream from Atlanta, could exceed three million cells per millimeter during extended low-flow periods in the summer with present point-source phosphorus loads.
